DTS discs of SW and ROTJ were loaned out to an old member of this forum several years ago, to be "experimented with" by an undisclosed third party and nothing ever came of it.

The discs were returned scratched up, much to the owner's dismay.

Were they the audio for the whole movie or just for trailers.  I have seen the DTS discs for trailer A and B.

George Lucas on Special effects and filmaking during making of ROTJ
Time

It is from The John Philip Peacher book, and seems to almost be about the prequels its quite bizarre.  Reminds me of the star wars to Jedi quote " a special effect without a story is a pretty boring thing".

"Special effects don't make the movie, and they are only important to tell the story and to give the characters credibility"

"if the Characters are not there or the acting isn't good, the movie will fall apart. It can't sustain itself. People think these are special effects movies. I would say the effects contribute  15 to 20 percent to the enjoyability, effectiveness, and popularity of the movie- At the most. Even in Star Wars

" If you start developing computerized backgrounds , hopefully that will be a way to bring down the cost. But in reality, if things are done right the films won't look any different than they do today. With these systems available, there will be a lot of filmakers moving in. You'll have tiny figures walking around in giant beautiful sets , which will be boring; the films will be a failure , and everybody will say 'Computer movies are not commercial'.

" The whole thing relies on the actors. I would say the acting and story are at least 75 percent of the film.  Just that.  If you can't get that 75 percent , if you don't have good performances and a good plot, you will never get the film to run on the 25 percent that is left. No matter how brilliant a director you are, how fantastic the special, effects, how beautifully it is photographed, how wonderful the music is, it will not work as a popular movie running at 25 percent."

The most pathetic drivel about the prequels i have ever read.

Yeah, but the OT is worth watching frame-by-frame.

Which i why i have them on CAV laserdisc.

Speaking of George i know it is not officially confirmed but i heard the live action show is moving forward as star tours II is done and Red Tails is in post production.

Whether or not they shot anything for the live action series is anyone's guess, but since they got Daniel Logan to voice Boba Fett on the clone wars show i am sure he will be in the live action if and when it happens.

I think the whole thing is George is worried about the budget and making them theatrical quality 1 hour shows.  Also he needs a TV network/studio to help release it.

Help Wanted: Citizen Kane TCM HD - did anyone capture this?
Time

Ah, thanks bkev, I didn't know TCM just upscaled. By the way, did anyone ever make an NTSC version of the British Citizen Kane with the better video transfer?

You mean the non Lowry touched version, lol.

Never seen a project on that and was not aware the UK had an not destroyed by DVNR version.

The USA version removed a lot of the grain if not all of it and looks like video it is a disgrace yet people loved it.

Now the reason I think that both Fox and Lucasfilm have'nt released any details on the saga and prequel and original trilogy BD boxed sets is because they haven't started work on them and I think they will start work and when they are ready to release a date it will be either in May or June. So don't rush yo judgement on the Star Wars blu-rays until they are finished and they are out in September.
Because nothing says quality like a 4 month rush job. Isn't that what the 04 DVDs were?

According to what info Zombie was able to find it was done in 30 days by Lowry.  They were only the DVNR/ clean up people, Lucasfilm had already transferred them to hard-drives, working at 1080P from a new scan of the o-neg.

Lucas also supposedly fine tuned the color timing himself as a supervisor, but why are they so messed up.

There is no reason to believe Lucas went back and did a high res scan, for all intents and purposes even without direct confirmation i believe the blu rays will be from the 2004 master after Lowry's clean up was done.

1080 only for a blu ray release as the origin resolution is piss poor, they used that way back like 10 or 11 years ago  for some DVD release masters.

New "Superman" actor announced!

Not everything has to be abut the look.

not everything, but Superman does.    Superman does not have look hair or a beard.   and yeah, I know he had long hair in the comics for time.   Whoever decided that was a good idea, needs to be shot.

I also hope they use the John Williams score, it will be impossible for them to come up with score that would be anywhere near as good as that.  It would not seem like Superman without that music.

John Williams Superman theme is being rumored/reported to not be used.  As this is a new continuity.  They have yet to announce the Guy scoring the film as far as i know, the rumored individual is Hans Zimmer.

Since i have not yet a full press release for 2012's the Man of Steel i am not sure whether or not it has been confirmed he is doing the score.

There have been at least 2 attempts to get Williams to score another Superman film, with the Donner Cut of Superman II, and With Superman Returns.  Both times he turned the offer down.

Hopefully they don't go back to the original comics continuity where superman could not fly and could just run really fast and defy gravity.

Also hoping its not the bad emo superman like in the new Earth one graphic novel by JMS.

New Theory: Steven Spielberg Ruined Star Wars
Time

captainsolo said:

In the mid 80's Spielberg's positivism hadn't fully been realized. Post Empire of the Sun anything is possible. I don't think he ever had that much influence on SW, but if he had directed ROTJ then things would be completely different. (More ewoks for example.) I do think he made Raiders brilliantly because he knew everything was riding on it for his career to continue. Temple is a simpler serial film that happened to be made in 1984. Last Crusade is a tired and lumbering dinosaur.

As for Indy IV, I'd blame bad scripts, bad choices, both Lucas and Spielberg, David Koepp, and the stupid decision to wait so damn long.

The real question is: Who the hell is lobotomizing our filmmakers?

George Lucas and his original CGi vision is lobotomizing filmakers.

New "Superman" actor announced!

One of the guys rumored to be on the short list for Bond when they chose Craig, very interesting.

Not sure he fits the idea of Superman unless we are supposed to forget Reeve.

I am more worried about the story, the costume and how they make the flying look than the actor at this point.

Though i was not one of the Haters of Routh as Superman.

That and the fact that presumably this will be the second superman not shot on film but video, and in 3-D this time which has me very worried.

Tom Welling is supposed to don the Routh suit before the final season of smallville is over, hopefully they have a budget to do a new one and not reuse that.  I also hope the suit is real and practical and not cgi made in post.

I am not sorry to say Cavill has the bond look , as many years ago Clive Owen did.  Guy who was almost Bond but too young at the time Chosen as Superman, lol.  Who would have thunk it.

Now the Rage that they cast a non American as superman will begin.  Just like when they picked Bale for Batman.

Qui-Gon is back
Time

You could argue star Trek 2009's sillyness.  Since it is basically a remake of star wars 1977, with a bit of empire strikes back thrown in for good measure, lol.

You could also point out that the design seems like a ripoff of the remake of Galactica, and that a lot seems to have been borrowed from the bad movie adaptation of starship troopers.

Was there ever a treatment or outline for the prequels ?
Time

As far as can be gleaned  from all available sources its was just hashed out verbally between Lucas and Kurtz.

So the idea that he had the story already written for 9 films is just flat on its face bullshit if not a complete and utter lie.

In Lucas binder of scripts there is no outline for 1-3, or 7-9.

Prior to putting pencil to paper in nov 1 1994 there was no backstory for star wars except in Lucas mind.

His general idea for the prequels changed between 1983 to 1999-2005.

The bad mother and good mother idea vanished.  The love triangle vanished.

The slow seduction to evil of Anakin by the Emperor vanished.

Anakin being a good friend and great starpilot vanished.
