MattmanOmega's Rebellion Collection & 720p AVCHD of OT Theatrical Vers. (Released)
Time

The Gout DVD for Empire is not half bad for a video transfer done in 1993.

The Transfer for Jedi is bad though and so is star wars.  But Jedi is at least passable.  The amount of dirt on star wars makes me wonder what the source was.  Definitely not the O-neg.

I think Zombie once speculated on why it was so grainy.  Especially in the tatooine scenes.

Maybe your right but that first cap of Threepio is kind of off, perhaps this is the gout.

I forgot that they corrected the colors when they did the DVNR in the early nineties.

Must be too used to how the films looked on video before 1993.

The earlier transfers were far too desaturated and faded looking.  With brightness turned up.

Starting with the New THX approved transfers they were more Saturated looking.  The 2004 is just all wrong though.

My faces laserdiscs pressed in japan have neither the sharpness or the saturation of the gout even if they came from the same master.  The  softness in the picture makes the DVNR smear on especially very grainy scenes less horrible.

I still wonder if they added sharpening to the DVD's, Star Wars looks horrible and unwatchable on the gout DVD.  While the laserdisc is certainly passable for 1995.

Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal
Time

I still think its funny they took the only one of the 2 known made Technicolor copies of star wars and spliced in the Eastman stock that was pre LPP,lol.

The 1981 crawl was completely faded to red right ?

The other almost untouched print is in George Lucas private collection, the Senator theatre one they borrowed from a collector was on the market for sale, i saw it on Ebay once.

I wonder if that Collector is even aware of the value of that print seeing as there were only 2 made.  And the fact they had it screened publicly with the chance Lucas would take it back and destroy it is hard to believe.

I would definitely pay to see either of the Technicolor prints on DVD or Blu ray.

Despite Harris misgivings about Transferring a technicolor print as being a poor source.

Yellow Harvest (ROTJ Fan Edit) (* unfinished project *)

Perry King tested for Han Solo on star wars.  He obviously was not chosen.

I like His Han performance though.

I the Leia in the Radio drama as well.

Even the Luke in Jedi is decent if jarring because it is not Mark Hamill.

The Lando in Jedi is horrible though, funny that they were able to get Billy Dee for Dark Empire but not for Return of the Jedi radio, lol.

I think The Vader in star wars radio is spot on, but in empire and jedi leaves a lot to be desired even if the same guy from star trek VI.

How many of you watch the Clone Wars series regularly and what do you think of it?
Time

I like it, its kind of like a modern version of marvel star wars, takes Continuity with a grain of salt,  Which is fun.  I just dislike the obvious modern Lucas touches.

I also dislike that it is not EU and is Canon with the films, but hey whatever George knows best, lol.

Erik i think the live action could be good in certain circumstances.  Like Lucas does not direct, and someone else writes the episodes.  Guest writers and guest Directors like Young Indy, and up and comers in the industry as well as industry veterans.

As for Clone Wars i think it is really cool Walter Murch is directing an episode for season 4.

I think Return to Oz is unfairly maligned by Critics.

Still he is an incomparable editor, and sound guy.

Wow, that '77 frame is something. My first thought was that he probably only has the crawl, not a complete print (since there must be a lot of them floating around out there if they were swapping it out for the Ep. IV version in '81) but that hardly seems worth the effort.

I think didn't Negative -1 join in his efforts and offer the prints, with the idea that it will never be seen or shared ?

The only real problem with The Clone Wars, to me, is that they try to do a lot of this fanservice.

And the problem with Fanservice is that you get Boba Fett in Star Wars, or Jabba in Star Wars.

You get Jar Jar and Hayden in jedi for those new school fans for example.

The idea that Boba is even in the second star tours is just that.

That and the 90's Boba Fettish thanks to dark empire bringing him back, but it was a marvel comics idea anyways.

The EU had ridiculous things like overuse of pseudo death stars and superweapons of the week, and cloned emperors and spirit transference.

Star Wars Manga
Time

Mangas are not printed backwards.  They are only backwards when they are flipped like they used to do.  The proper way to enjoy a manga is right to left, it is the way the artist intended.

If you don't read manga regularly it gets hard to get used to at first but believe me i prefer my manga only translated, no censoring or flipping the image is wanted.

In other words the Dark Horse Releases are printed Backwards i know because Pablo Hidalgo i believe did an article once where he used images of the preferred japan release with the images matching the films.

Dark Horse no longer flips or flops its manga, though perhaps it was done at the request of Lucashfilms i don't know

XM film score discussion (was Goldsmith)
Time

Possibly the only other Composer who stood on the same level as John Williams, in film music.

Incidentally Star Wars 1977 and Star Trek 1979 are often rated as two of the very best science fiction scores ever recorded.

I think Goldsmith best stuff though was in experimenting with  sounds.  Like in the Omen, Planet of the Apes and The Twilight Zone, and Outer Limits.

The music creating an atmosphere of creepiness.

His themes so dominated Star Trek though when Abrams did a reboot of Star Trek in an alternate timeline they went in an entirely different direction with the music.  The New Trek score is very Williams-esque.  Lots of use of Leitmotif, and themes for the characters a lot like star wars.

I think all the businesses going bankrupt and downsizing has to do with the opposite effect. Less and less people in this country have disposable income due to their jobs being lost from outsourcing and increasing costs of living. Let alone people are being forced to take pay cuts when wages have been stagnate for 30 years while inflation and costs of healthcare have increase at an exponential rate. People are losing their pensions, retirement savings and now Republicans are threatening to get rid of Social Security even though the system has been proven time and time again to be solvent. How are people suppose to feel comfortable spending on optional items in this kind of economy with these politicians are browbeating fear into us that all safety nets may be cut away?

Echoes of Janskeet.  WOW.

Though i would not disagree with your point.

Save Star Wars Dot Com
Time

After Lucas gained all the rights to the original trilogy from fox, i would not be surprised if they handed over the o-negs and let him hack them up for the 1997 special editions, in exchange for the rights to release the prequels.

I hope anything that was cut out into the trim bin was saved.

The color on the Derann films Return of the Jedi is just like i remember seeing the film in 1985, too bad i don't own a copy.

Much too much money for me.  They now go for thousands when a few years back you could get a print from Derann for 650 bucks before shipping.

Or roughly half that in British Pounds.

Star Wars Manga
Time

I think they are out of print but still available from Amazon.

I think the link is probably against the forum rules, but lets see what moth3r says or does, lol.

I spent years trying to find and buy the Japanese versions because they are not flipped, they should have done right to left panel as manga is supposed to be, they fact they flipped the image makes the image not match with the one in the films.

That and both versions are quite bizarre because they seem to be a strange mix of both oot and SE.

The ANH one is the best one.  It won the Eisner Award.

What you're looking for is the J.W. Rinzler books, so yeah, the Star Wars one you linked to is the 30th Anniversary counterpart to the Empire book you mentioned.

I would assume a Rinzler-written ROTJ book will be out in 2013.

Which will also be an anniversary to rage over because all we will have is the lousy Gout.  No restored oot on DVD or Blu ray.
