Has this been released yet DJ ?

I am totally looking forward to an anamorphic decent quality ntsc release, beyond yours i would have to recode the g'kar and it would be shit, lol.

Wish i was a wealthy dude and had connections because i would lose to see the 35mm prints in a theater again, fuck the 3D phantom menace.  The 1997 special edition may be an eyesore in comparison to the originals but the colors are not fucked up and neither is the audio.  There is no Hayden Skywalker or jar jar binks in return of the jedi 1997 either.

Help: looking for... 35mm Stereo Mix - by Belbecus, from the 1985 LaserDisc.
Time

There is also a very high quality theater reference version but not by belbecus, obviously not as good as the laserdisc.

Then you have the VHS rip floating around of the rental tape captured by thestarkiller.

That along with the 2 or 3 sources for the mono mix the only mix missing is the 70mm.

I think its pretty much been confirmed the 1997 special edition was not based on the 70mm but was derived from the same six track master used to make the 70mm version.

A question for everyone here...It is 1994 and YOU are in charge of the entire production and story ideas for the PT films
Time

If i was George i would have left Star Wars alone after 1983.  And left Indiana Jones alone after 1989.

And go on to retire a film legend with my legacy intact and my riches or move on to those experimental films i had been  talking about for years and years.

But i am not Lucas.

The only thing i would be slightly more interested in seeing than the originally planned prequels, or sequels is the alternate Jedi Kurtz talked about.

The version of the film where han would die and Luke walks off on a solitary journey as a Jedi.  And Leia becomes the Queen of her people.

Luke and Leia are not brother and sister but neither are they lovers.

Luke does not confront the emperor until the sequel trilogy, and he does not find his sister yet til then either.  Whom he later trains as a Jedi, passing on what he has learned.

Jedi would have resolved the Vader conflict.  He would have been dead by the sequel trilogy.

Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal
Time

Jedi is not rare, nor is the LPP as rare as star wars or empire.

I think Derann had 2 releases on super8mm the first was very high quality but by the time they did the second release their negative was in rough shape.

There were more prints done for Jedi as it is the more popular film than star wars, derann got far less orders for that and is a rare title because it was only available for a limited time whereas Jedi was still available as a used print up until recently when they sold the last one.

The classic home cinema release was duped from a 35mm foreign release print, when it was imported they spliced on the english roll up and redubbed it into english from the laserdisc i believe.

So not a proper preserved print.  But people that owned it thought it was great.

The reason Jedi seems so hard to find is the demand.  Partially caused by the non existent release of a decent DVD release of the originals or a blu ray, but also because it is the more favorite of the three films.  Or the one people obligatory seem to buy to complete their set because they already own star wars and empire.

I personally think its because the first derann print is one of their finest releases they ever put out said to match the quality of the 35mm almost.  Obviously an exaggeration.  But the colors were very good and no fade.  The only negative was the audio was in MONO folded down from the stereo mix.

As for the 35mm prints any screenings would be problematic because of the pre LPP Eastman stock.  Star Wars and Empire being the biggest offenders.  But their are also badly faded copies of Jedi although the re-release was printed on LPP in 1985.

I cannot say for sure if their were new prints struck for the re-issues of star wars and empire.  But if they exist they are obviously very rare in LPP.

Never mind the 2 technicolor prints in existence that are the holy grail of star wars on film.

The EU Discussion Thread

I am following the mini for the cancelled legacy, called legacy war.  pretty good so far.

The fate of the jedi novels on the other hand are hit and miss.  Mostly crap.

Waiting to see Crimson Empire 3 if its good or not since it was uncanceled by the head of dark horse who somehow got the Lucas folks on board.

Something to do with it will sell lots of copies and make a ton of money probably, lol.

I think its more like they owed the fans a wrap up of the story, but after dark empire III which became empires end was a piece of crap then i am not so sure its a great idea.

You could say fans of Kotor deserved a real third game and not an MMO spinoff set centuries later that does not tell the end of the first 2 games, but hey Lucasharts does not care and nor do bioware.

Lucas could have also have set the animated series in original trilogy territory or in an era not overdone like the prequels. You know like actually have the characters from the original films but then he would have to either pay the actors major cash for voice over work or recast the roles.

The only person i know who would do it justice is Hamill though i don't think he would want to revisit the role, after all he turned down the jedi radio play after doing star wars and empire.

What has not been done or tapped is Indiana Jones animated, and if they cannot do it well it best to stay that way, the dark horse comics were okay and the marvel ones a mixed bag but some really good.  Much better and more indiana jones like than Crystal Numbskull were both publishers comics.

.: LeeThorogood's Original Trilogy Replica Technicolor Project :. (Released)
Time

I remember the color being really nice on the 1997 Jedi and empire.  It is sad that neither of the originals got a Technicolor print.  But they could still be done if the labs existed.

There was a short revival of technicolor in the 1990's being used in restorations.  But not necessarily new technicolor prints made.  As far as i know there were none.

The seperation masters should be still good as far as i know for a new release.

Lucas just wants digital versions out there, even the new 3-D will probably be the newfangled fake imax with no film.

Interesting info. I wonder if there are any "adapted scope" prints out there somewhere?

Complete prints not likely though i believe there were extracts.

Too much of the frame would be lost to make the print true 2:35:1 on super 8mm or 16mm though when stretched.

I once say a very bad faded adapted scope print of American Graffiti with french subtitles below the image and it looked horrible like it was zoomed in almost pan and scan.

Info: a Smear-free '93 ?
Time

I have the widscreen vhs set and i always figured Jedi was the same as the JSC because its misframed high up on the tv set when played back.

Every widescreen copy on home video that was legit before the definitive or faces of Jedi was misframed.  The first version in CLV that was fixed was the 1995 faces, and of course you got the 1993 CAV release in the def box.

Your favorite movies

The Space Battleship Yamato film series 1-5.  From the restored region 2 bandai masters.  Not the bad voyager entertainment with burned in subtitles.  Only problem with the region 2 is lack of english subs and lack of them online except for 1 of the films and very bad engrishy subs at that.

The original Godzilla and its Color remake both without a decent blu ray release or DVD.

Galaxy Express 999 (* unfinished project due to DVD release - lots of info *)
Time

I thought Funimation had the rights to the tv series.  But maybe that is just an on demand thing.

They have made no plans for a DVD release or a dub as far as i'm aware.

A new dub, and translation is being done for Arcadia of my youth as well as a restoration but i cannot remember the company, the last llicensor ran out and did not require the license.

Still no company to issue Space Battleship Yamato uncut and in DVD qulity in the USA, since the rights issues are fucked up by voyager having starblazers.

Really unfortunate when the bandai japan releases of the movies and season 1 HD remastered are exceptional.

The bandai issues of galaxy express on blu ray of the films though are an abomination as they are upscaled.  They did not bother to go back to the film source.  even the DVD releases of all but the most recent films barely pass muster.

I would like to see the Yamato films restored for blu ray, as well as having season 1 released on blu ray because there is already a 1080 master used for the DVD.

The West getting decent remastered copies of Harlock TV  is also not going to happen the on demand versions have bad vhs quality video and engrish subs. The japan region 2 dvd's had 2 restored audio tracks the original monaural and the new 5.1. And at the time they came from new HD telecinese much like the other companies were doing.

But such video now looks inferior because in 10 plus years of technology advances newer scans would be better than a scan done in 2000.

I think Akira got a new 4k scan with the work and cleanup being done in 2K when the original HD was done in 1080i in 2001.

JetrellFo's Jedi Archive Special Edition: Japan LD Preservation Project ***Still Learning***
Time

Correct me if i'm wrong but i think these were made by capturing the laserdisc to super vhs and then making DVD's out of them.

This was done to get rid the side swap issue if i remember reading about it correctly.

Obviously with software and a computer one can do a far better job.

Also the Laserdiscs are not the best picture quality source in the first place, that is why people have used DVB over the air pal recordings, and a digibetacam tape for reconstructing these versions.

It seems like it is our only source now. Even George wants to use it as the base of all reference.

You would be correct that it was used as the source for color correcting the 1997 version of a new hope since the original negative was so badly faded.

But i also believe that Lucas has separation masters for all three original films.

These are called protection masters because they can be used to create a new negative if the original is lost or destroyed.  The quality is not as good however.

My faces laserdiscs pressed in japan have neither the sharpness or the saturation of the gout even if they came from the same master.  The  softness in the picture makes the DVNR smear on especially very grainy scenes less horrible.

I still wonder if they added sharpening to the DVD's, Star Wars looks horrible and unwatchable on the gout DVD.  While the laserdisc is certainly passable for 1995.

My Japan "Faces" is this way as well.  The U.S. version is much clearer...which set was pressed first?

My set is the US versions but pressed in Japan so no laser rot.

I do have the Japan Definitive collection which also has no rot.

My fixed USA version which came from a sealed copy is so rotten as to almost be unplayable, drop outs in the picture and audio.

Pressed in the USA.

My special widescreen pre THX USA version was also pressed in Japan and no sign of rot.

Both Copies i have of the CAV pan and scan star wars from 1985 pressed in a Michigan factory are rotten. Just for example as to how some USA factories had bad discs.

It is not as if no Japan laserdiscs can be rotters there are some notorious ones, but overall they had cleaner factories and less chance of this problem.
