What do you LIKE about the EU?
Time

Speaking of EU i will be reading Fate of the Jedi Conviction tomorrow, lets see if Aaron Allston does not pen another stinker, the last time he did he had a very good excuse a heart attack, and so the novel was pushed back but also rushed in editing and writing.

Still not as bad as the last Christie Golden installment.  Which was like a teen angst piece of crap.

The last Novel he wrote that was a solid work and i really enjoyed was Solo Command in the X-wing Series, not quite as good as Stackpole.

Star Wars Video Games - a general discussion thread
Time

I liked Battlefront II and was pissed when they cancelled III for the Xbox and PS3 which was in development and had a space mission mode.

Also pissed they cancelled Kotor III, i liked the first 2 games, though the unfinished 2nd game is a mistake that shouldn't have happened the extra levels should have been finished if only for the PC version if the XBOX one had to be rushed for deadline.

I like the Kyle Katarn Jedi Knight Games.

Terrible would be star wars obi wan, even revenge of the sith which had horrible controls was somewhat okay.

Animating the Death Star Trench Circa April 1978
Time

I am right in assuming the majority of so called computer future tech in star wars was just hand drawn or animation ?

Like the torpedo that destroys the death star going into the trench that is animation and not done cgi right ?

Interesting i read Lucas wanted to use cgi a lot more in Jedi but the tech was not there yet, so they only did the death star schematic once again in a computer graphic.

These old school computer graphics don't look like cartoons and they don't stick out like a sore thumb, and are only meant to simulate computer displays, even the holograms were not real holograms or cgi.

Unlike the CGI in the prequels which instead of augmenting actually draws you out of the story and draws attention to itself which is ludicrous, especially since nothing in the prequels story could not be done with traditional effects and filming, the background visuals while nice are not the story.

George himself understood this once upon a time.

They had an English version of that clip, only not on the vhs but as a commercial i can clearly remember this in 1995 when i went out and bought the faces pan and scan tapes.

The letterbox limited edition was in less numbers i think and quite more expensive.

That video obviously shows the color correction and digital video noise reduction, someone on the other end of the video telecine obviously had to move some dials and choose the color levels and how much grain to try and masque out or clean up with the relatively infancy of dvnr tech of that era.

Even many years down the line Lowry who came up with an automatic algorithm could not do away with the so called sins of dvnr, a lot of releases needed to be checked or done frame by frame, otherwise you end up processing parts of the image you don't want to or removing more than grain.

I wonder where None got the Imax footage from, the online clip is so low quality i wish it would surface in better quality or be a bonus feature on the blu rays, but it won't be there any more than the theatrical originals.

I wish the other clips they redid for star wars in 70mm surfaced, like the falcons escape to hyperspace.

This was sort of a special edition before the special edition, if only in clips recreated for a documentary. Imagine if they went and back and redid all the effects in 70mm for imax with models and enhanced it with cgi like they did here.

But fans probably would hate that too, another version.

Not sure why but i think they redid  not just the opening stardestroyer flyover but the starfield as well for this, then did not use it again in 1997.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

The Tfners, the Lucas sycophants and the haters of the oot, that love the special editions and prequels have won.

No voice of reason or logic will they accept  as to why the original movie should be included or given their own proper separate release above these other garbage pieces of dung.

It is almost a slap in the face to oot fans not only are the theatricals not included but Luke is a ghost on the cover and little annie is featured prominently reinforcing the lie that star wars is darth vaders story and not from the adventures of Luke Skywalker.

It fills me with rage every time these idiots cheer on the destruction of my favorite films and think Lucas is justified.

Info & Offer: Does anybody still need any LD captured?
Time

American Graffiti. On the DVD version the opening shot was replaced with a cgi sky and they changed the color timing and title card ,plus they used DVNR.

The updated version may or may not be on the signature collection discs, so capping the first issue letterbox THX release before any changes would be nice.

THX 1138 is already in good hands on these boards.

The Phantom Menace theatrical cut won't be on the Blu ray, perhaps someone can take another shot at capping the laserdisc, or using the blu ray and editing the video and audio back to the theatrical, but that is a reconstruction not a preservation.

Info: 1997 SE DV Broadcast Info & Discussion
Time

I wonder if it would be possible to find the individual with the broadcast digi beta tape for star wars episode IV a new hope special edition, and if they still have the tape do a new modern transfer of it on a new better capture card or method.

Highly unlikely.  I know.

When was the last time they broadcast the 1997 versions, didn't ady say they did sometime ago in the UK, they showed one of the three films in SD from 1997 and the other 2 in HD from 2004.   I am not sure but i think it was ROTJ.

There are a few DVB transfers of these seems like.  What ones are there, reivax, flunk, TB, and gkar.  And not complete sets for all.

Reivax and Flunk are just episode IV i believe.

Not sure which is the Canal+ broadcasts maybe the TB.

The reivax is better than the LD but some scenes are a little too dark, like the scene where Owen talks to threepio at the droid auction.

I am a HUGE Arnold Fan, have been for a very long time, but this is going to be his come back? damn I was hoping for either King Conan, which was in talks a long time ago, I assumed it was canned because he became Governor, or be in Expendables 2, or something along those lines, but to make his return into showbiz as a cartoon character, damn I just don't know about that, so what do you guys think of this?

Did not someone say he was considering being in Terminator again, lol at his age.

Wonder if his career is terminated, i mean look at the shape he left the state California in after being Governor.

I also wonder if this will hang over his career as long as the Tom Cruise thing.

Well, now we know he belongs with a Kennedy for sure! *snigger*

I know right.  The liberals in the Media never made a stink about JFK and Marilyn Monroe.

And even at the time Jackie  stayed with him and did not divorce him. what Comes out after her death ? She was cheating on him too with Onassis, allegedly.

In the culture men are expected to stray and it is accepted, woman do it and they are considered whores.

Both JFK and Clinton were seen as cool when they did it.  Both are, or were Democrats.  Same reason its acceptable for a Democrat to start wars but not Republicans, double standards.

Sources on the Special Edition
Time

Was not the final mix done so late that they could not wait to find the original masters for jedi and this is why the SE soundtrack cd sounds like shit ?

Because the stage they did it at had to be vacated for the scoring of ID4.

Speaking of 1994 nov 1 was when Lucas started Episode 1, the writing of it.

So the Special Edition had to be in the plans for some time to coincide with the lead up to the prequels as well as free r&d paid for by fox.

What do you LIKE about the EU?
Time

Favorite things about the EU.  That there is star wars beyond return of the jedi, my favorite characters from  the oot films are represented, it moved the story beyond ROTJ and not backwards.

That Luke actually becomes a Jedi master and grows as a man, and a character.

That people actually die and get old.  That even if it is not talked  adults in the EU universe do have sex.

Jedi men can love women, and not go evil.

They deal with issues like death, politics and religion and are far less juvenile in content than the films, well sometimes.  Other times the EU books are just as bad if not worse, even giving Lucas some of his bad prequel ideas.

Ah has so you were right Harmy a copy of the negative in 35mm.

Still it is a generation removed from the oneg, but still better quality i would imagine than a release print would have.

Less generation loss than the opticals and would not be so hard a match since the new elements were done as cgi in a computer.

If they had done and finished the effect in the traditional way the extra generation might have been an obstacle.

With an old school optical printer it would have been a nightmare but the new tools in 1996-1997 made it possible.

Never mind what they could do today with the newest of the new tech to actually restore the oot and not make a special edition or recomp stuff.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

Yeah but if it was filmed on 16mm, how much worse would a 16mm print be instead of the negative ?

And they were able to take the 16mm Jabba scene copy used in the special  derived from 35mm and use it in the 1997 special edition, so it has to be possible.

Maybe not in HD but SD should be possible.

Or if Lucas is super cheap he can just use the old video master from the Japanese laserdisc, minus the subtitles if they are not a part of the master, otherwise he would have to use the unrestored vhs print video source.

Maybe i should be happy that the gout got ported over from a 1993 laserdisc master, if that did not exist i bet Lucas would have used the same one they had done for the old vhs releases in pan and scan, lol.

Starwars.com closes its forums
Time

Good Material to make it worth our while, not just old bantha tracks and some rare pics that they suddenly stopped posting material on the oot.

They said maybe they would put up  the old documentaries well now that 3 of them are on the blu ray, guess we know what the holdup was.

Prequels crap dominated the site and special edition revisionism, now its just clone wars crap.

Guess i should not have said promise, they did hook fans with possibilities of future offerings.   And i don't mean paltry discounts on overpriced action figures, which i don't buy or collect.

Lucasfilm is so cheap.  Even if they could not find the negative for From Star Wars to jedi, which they have not said why it is not included, they could have just scanned an immaculate 16mm LPP print from some fan or find one on the market if not in their archives.

If i am not mistaken all four documentaries from the oot era are from the same director.

The Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars movie. Or is it?
Time

But then again some of the more lighthearted touches in Empire are pure Lucas, he is the one who came up with Yoda and his fairy tale like silliness, to really being a stern old Jedi.

He came up with the genius idea of making Vader Luke's Father, got to give the man respect for that.

Other things like his bad dialog for the carbon freeze scene that Harrison changed on set, can be forgiven since Kersh allowed him to change it.
