Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

Funny thing is i thought the 1997 versions looked great when i was younger and i was a Lucas apologist back then, i mean of course the 1997 versions looked better if all you ever had was a set of pre THX pan and scan vhs tapes, since there was no dueling versions in theaters we cannot really say which version is preferred.  Since in 1997 the option of watching the originals  was not offered.

Though even in 1997 i thought the added Jabba scene was hideous, putting boba fett in a new hope dumb, and having greedo shoot beyond ridiculous as it makes no sense in Han Solo's character arc.

I always liked Bring my shuttle, more than alert my star destroyer to prepare for my arrival. in empire.  The wampa addition made the scene in the wampa cave less mysterious or frightening, i had no attachment to yub yub in jedi or lapti nek, but Jedi rocks was horrible even then.

He is the chairman of the board so i imagine he is the majority shareholder.

He can write it into his will that the original films never see the light of say again, just as easily as he can put it into his will for no more star wars films, like say his kids wanted to cash in and make 7-9 with all new actors.

Though Katie Lucas is not sympathetic to the haters as she calls them and it is unlikely even if she was allowed to she would release the originals were she in fact the future head of LFL.

Star Wars turns 34 years old today!  What are YOU doing to celebrate?  I'm seeing John Williams live in concert in Boston tonight. :D

If they did split it up into 2 concerts i would go to see the original trilogy one and skip the prequels, though off hand to be honest i liked duel of the fates, across the stars and battle of the heroes.

Still the exclusion of prequel music would make room for more oot pieces.

Don't think any prequel fans would show up though, if they screened footage of not the special edition but the oot focused on luke's story not darth vader, and left out the 6 film saga revised new 90's Lucas vision called his original vision.

I am of course talking about star wars in concert, you are probably talking about the night of film music at the pops thing Williams has been doing for a while.

Hypothetical Question.
Time

Were Lucas to release a restored version of the oot on blu ray, or in the cinemas would the divided fanbase be reconciled.

Would George be forgiven for the special editions and prequels ?

I personally don't care for them all that much, but to own all the versions side by side or to have a choice which to watch would be nice.

Including having options for theatrical special editions and prequels and clones imax cut, and lost cut of star wars.

I still have a lot of respect for George and don't bear him any ill will as a human being, but man his stance on the originals makes no sense.

Would not me owning and enjoying those films he made make him happy.  People love the films but he hates them.

What are the chances the new sound mix won't sound as bad as 2004's did, or that it will be from a new transfer for the 2004 special edition original trilogy films, or even have fixed colors, lightsabers corrected and the garbage mattes addressed, i mean is it zero.  Because if so i refuse to pre-order these even as a gift for someone who likes the 2004 versions.  Quality control must be zero at Lucasfilm these days, a damn shame indeed.

They hold no legal responsibility to fans though, only shareholders.

No difference from the studio system at all, except in the mind of a supposed artist and auteur who has ruined his own good films.

I may still get the set for the oot documentaries and deleted scenes, but i will never watch the 2004 set or the prequels i probably will give them to my nephew or older brother who does not care which version it is.

^What do you care? You're always talking about how it's no KOTOR 3 and just a damn cash grab.

I always liked Jedi Academy (MP and mod purposes, single player was eh,) Outcast, and Rogue Squadron.

There were some rumors and even hints they might reveal the story that would have been kotor III in some kind of backstory or download content.

The timeline makes reference to the first game even if the story is somewhat inconsistent with that game, i am also wondering if part 2 which was not done by bioware is no longer canon and has been erased from continuity since it has not been referenced.

Any news on that mmo thing, Old Republic or something.  I heard it was delayed until 2012.

Even though they were bad star wars and sort of prequelish, i really kind of liked the force unleashed I and II and that it was close to the oot era.

The fact they canceled III is a joke, and they let their best writer go Hayden Blackman.

Should we just give up now?

I mean there is not a shred of hope Lucas will ever release the originals ever again in any format, much less in good quality.

I will have to settle for the V3 of the Gout from DJ, i refuse to ever watch the 2004 set ever again.

Some parts of the 2004 star wars and empire are not too bad, the colors are screwed up the lightsabers and the sound.  But Jedi is hideous it has Hayden and jar jar in it.  I can only watch the 1997 gkar if i am forced to watch a special edition of that movie.

Are you sure star wars is that old the only version in existence was made in 2004, must be less than a decade old right, lol.

1977-1983 versions have pulled from circulation since the nineties, and all but a handful of copies have been destroyed by the grinch who stole star wars.

Sure the library of congress has non restored copies, but since no one can watch them its kind of stupid.  Some one told me see star wars is preserved you just cannot watch it.

In neither star wars or empire's 30th anniversary were restored theatrical prints in theaters.

To me it is more of a funeral dirge than a celebration, 14 years of celebrating the destruction of a classic  is nothing to celebrate.

Info: 1997 SE DV Broadcast Info & Discussion
Time

Might have something to do with the set being traded had crc erros and could not copy.

Niether Russ or Rikter could salvage the discs, but dark jedi somehow got a hold of copies that worked ?

By the way the TB release is not just the 1997 special edition un-original trilogy but also the fourth film they did was phantom menace.

However this group was disappeared or disbanded since they did not do releases of attack of the clones or revenge of the sith.  Phantom's broadcast was sought after for one reason theatrical cut, quality is worse than the official DVD, and even inferior to most laserdisc rips.

Makes sense there is no clones or sith though because no broadcast exists of the theatrical cuts.  Only Bootlegs.

It was bad enough when they ruined the EU with retcons to fit the prequels, now the creativity is stifled because of Lucas Clone Wars series.

You cannot have anymore off the wall EU if it has to be approved by Lucas himself.

"I decided to change the canon its my canon and i can do what i want, I want" IS how i picture Lucas.

I want the canon i grew up with restored, the prequels deleted selectively from at  least being referenced constantly  To me continuity is the novelizations of the oot, the first 2 radio dramas and the films.

They are no longer G-Canon, what nonsense.

I say they should let an author pen a trilogy extrapolated from the oot as to what the prequels should be, no i don't believe it is a directors prerogative to reinvent a movie, not when there was nothing wrong with it to begin with.

The special editions and prequels will always be resented because they gave him license to reboot the universe, create star wars universe b in which the oot trilogy has been erased from existence.

Star Tours
Time

Who did the cgi for this, i hope not ILM it looks worse than 1999 phantom menace, i saw test footage of star tours 2 podrace and it was much inferior to that this is maybe 2 or 3 years ago.

I could understand as test footage but as final release, my god what an embarrassment.  I guess they figure kids won't notice, yeah right kids with High Def tv and xbox 360's and ps3 and blu ray could definitely tell the difference.

I guess its a step up from peewee  herman, but all the prequel-isms are a huge stumbling block in the way of enjoyment.

Unless you have nostalgia for the peewee herman droid voice, i found it almost as bad as jar jar binks.

Sources on the Special Edition
Time

The cinefex issue of the ilm  anniversary retrospective and special edition are interesting but not the prices being asked.

The fact there is almost nothing subtancialy like a documntary on the special edition, and not an apoloist piece like on the laserdisc, is dissapointing.

No footage of pacific titles work, or ilms work, or ycm labs work.

Into the Digital realm has what a single paragraph on the so called restoration.

I think there was a work in progress cgi x-wing on the John Knoll books cdrom meant for when they started discussion early in the nineties the special edition.

I think it was called 365 days or something, just a lol quality animated computer model i think.  Not sure if its the same as the one none suggested but probably it is.

I think their were articles on the cgi creation of Jabba and the sound mixing in one or 2 issues of star wars galaxy magazine by topps, but i don't think i have them anymore.

Anatomy of Star Wars Masterclass w/ Gary Kurtz & Sandy Lieberson
Time

Surprised he did not turn it into another Raiders and Jedi Bash fest.

I like Raiders and Jedi, he wants to savage the prequels now that would be entertaining.

Are Raiders and Jedi different than how Gary would have produced them, absolutely. The truth is Lucas considered replacing him on Empire but gave him second chance.

Empire is not the film Lucas ultimately wanted to make.

And he was very very unhappy with how star wars turned out.

He is very happy with the prequels and the cartoon/videogame 2004 Lucas personal  edit version.

From Joseph Williams to Jerry Hey, who would have noticed, or the bad 1994 quality graphics in the 1997 film of Jedi with snootles which looks like a ps1 quality cutscene.

Still not that bad when in 2004 you consider they put Hayden in the ghost scene, thought to be just a ridiculous fan rumor like Aliens in Indiana Jones IV.  Both unfortunately turned out to be true.

Sources on the Special Edition
Time

I remember some Howie Long Special where there is probably just a second of footage showing the washing of the original film.

But mostly was useless hype.

I believe the anatomy of a dewback will be on the blu ray, time to wait and see if part 2 is altered that proves Lucas saves all his films and their related materials.

Then you could get that making magic CD thing Fanfiltration converted, or get babyhums special edition press kit.

Probably both fall under the hype and non essentials though.
