Interesting prequel critique
Time

Ewan hated episode 1 and 2 but said the 3 one was good.

I disagree but that is his opinion.

The third could have been good without overacting by the Emperor, make the duel less ridiculous on mustafar and make the turn to the darkside make sense.

Also if you did not have a sense of them ticking things off on a list to connect it to the original trilogy as if paint by numbers, they could have still linked them in an interesting way by being more subtle.  The only thing i think was done well was when the helmet comes down on Anakin and He is Masked as Vader.  And the sunset on tatooine.  The Frankenstein scene was horrible, we did not have to see Yoda land on dagobah it could have been implied.

Star Wars review from 1977
Time

Well like Marquand said you either go for farce or play the material straight.

He compared how the material in star wars was done in a way respectful to the material unlike his comparison to the 1980's flash gordon which was purposely done to be campy and not to be taken seriously.

Like you can make a film for children that adults can enjoy and not talk down to them or insult their intelligence or you can make a film for children that is childish and insults children and condescends.

Lucas also liked the Famous Funnies covers done by Frazetta, the Buck Rogers covers. He wanted to use some of his favorite fantasies of his youth in a way that was not silly.

Make a B movie in an with an A movie budget and create a believable secondary world or universe.

Yeah he liked larry buster crabbes Flash Gordon serials, but if he really wanted to recreate that sillyness star wars would have not even broke even.

He expected it to do no better or worse than planet of the apes, but hoped it would not bomb like 2001 and take a long time to recoup costs and investment.

He used the trappings of fairy tale and space fantasy synthesized with a mythic/heroic structure.

The prequels have a harder time i think because you don't have the typical heroes journey or likeable everyman character.  He was telling an antihero story, the story of the tragic hero is bitter and dark, but he through in childess nonsense and the turn to the darkside made no logical sense.

I think Peter Jackson was right when he said the audience identifies with Luke because they are Luke, the main hero is the alter ego of the viewer much like frodo or samwise is in the lord of the rings films.

I certainly did not identify or like Hayden version of Anakin Skywalker, though i found Jake LLoyds anakin to be annoying at least his childlike character was identifiable and realistic.  The brooding whiny emo teen i never was so i don't get that character at all.

The Hobbit movie: Dwarves
Time

Because he wanted to avoid latinisms or frenchisms, aka romance languages and try to reconstruct words found in Germanic tongues.

He was going to use Dwarrows like Grimm but went with Dwarves.

The reason for Elves is plain to see he wanted to distinguish his elves from the small fairies found in late european literature or nursery tale.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

So now Vader's saber is purplish color, though not a solid purple like Mace Windu's saber.  How is that an improvement over bubblegum pink?

The deleted scenes and documentaries i do want.  But i don't want the special editions the ruined versions from 2004 even further ruined or the prequels.

I do want the oot and the 1997 special edition, but would settle for just the oot.

I would even be fine with just Lucas scanning his technicolor print of sw 77 and releasing it barebones with no extras except the 3 sound mixes.

As for empire and jedi there are no dye transfer prints so i am not so sure what the best quality existing prints are.

What did you like.......about the '97 Special Editions?
Time

The cleaned up picture and soundtrack, but but i did not appreciate the cgi.

I did like the extra Bigg's scene but not the way they edited out Red Leader's remembering Luke's Jedi pilot father.

Jabba scene unnecessary but was nice to see more of Harrison Ford.

I liked how Empire strikes back had the real boba fett voice and not the jango fett replaced one.

I liked how the end of the 1997 Jedi had no Hayden Christensen or jar jar binks.

Rate the Star Wars Films
Time

Nothing.  This is original trilogy dot com the originals are suppressed and destroyed, Lucas will never relent and the prequels will always be ruined movies they never will be good no matter who edits them.  They needed a good script and a good director to see that to come to pass.

Whats new in the star wars universe except Lucas further destroying star wars with the ruined movies in Blu ray even further wrecked and toyed with and then in 3-D.

Too much to ask for the real movies to be on a decent format and in a modern quality not laserdisc masters from 1993.

I should just cease to post and let my profile go bye bye.

The worst is come to pass the blu ray is already breaking sales figures and that ensures that the original movies will never be preserved and the negatives will be lost to time.

A once great man a destroyer of peoples childhood memories and a cultural icon of American history erased from film history systematically and on purpose.

Oh i loved it i just thought its a mixed bag like most films really or star trek films for that matter, but hey i liked the motionless picture even though i liked Khan as a follow up as well.

Trek V is horrible though it does have some decent moments between the 3 main characters.  Generations and insurrection are pretty junk too, first contact was a good actioner but not really a star trek message film like some of the others.

I think the Old Trek made better films though i can see why they decided to retread that even if i think it is not a very inspired idea.  Maybe better than the next next generation, tv series i heard they had planned, with kirks descendent and a dead federation and a final enterprise brought out of mothballs.

Watched JJ Trek again.  Really liked the are you out of your vulcan mind comment by bones, and great going jim now we have no captain and no goddamn first officer to replace him.

That movie was made by Karl Urban, the Kirk actor was annoying and acted like a douche and so did spocklar.

The non phasers were ridiculous the enterprise was a hyped up hotrod with frickin 747 engine turbines on it and an apple store bridge, and the cinematogrpahy was ruined by the lens flares and the shaky cam.  But the overall action and direction were not bad, the writing was passable at times when not laughable like time travel blackholes and redmatter, or Romulans who sound positively mary sue and have Australian accents.

The music was good and the ensemble cast was good if you can get over pine and Quinto acting like sullen jerks for most of the movie.

The only thing i found wrong about dune other than it being like  a bad acid trip movie was the casting, the guy from twin peaks as paul, and sting really, lol.

It is kind of funny having pre Captain Picard Patrick Stewart in it though.

Its not a bad movie nor is it a good movie, its sort of a strange expensive bloated experiment like most of that executive producers   films like king kong the 70's remake and the bad 80's flash gordon.

Dino made huge expensive flops.  Which were at least colorful and sometimes entertaining but nowise good movies in my honest opinion.

The Hobbit movie: Dwarves
Time

Go with the same design of hobbiton and gandalf as lotr only a little age difference on gandalf and it would be fine.

The only thing i have reservations and worries about really other than beorn, gollum, the riddle contest is handled is really smaug the dragon.

Bilbo looks a little too tall for a hobbit but i am sure that will be fixed in the final movie.  Not too sure on the actor chosen but i won't know until i see the film.  I do hate that its being shot on video in 3-D and not on super35 film.  Like the rings films.

What!?!? aka Missing Exposition
Time

I meant changing exposition or shifting canon as i'm making this all up as i go, like indiana jones quips in raiders.

Might as well have been George Lucas describing his storytelling on the star wars films. With the backwards way of starting in the middle and then not even writing the backstory until later when you had already pretty much said you would never direct again and were determined to never do any more star wars films, even though publicly the statement was maybe someday if not for Howard the duck or to further the technology revolution of computers and cgi would the prequels have been made, probably not.

Until Lucas decided we needed to know Darth Vader was Luke's father, who built c-3p0 a robot more human than vader to make a kind of irony.

Lucas likes to echo the stories in the prequels, but did we really need to know boba was a clone who was sad cause his dad died, lol.

That Luke and Anakin come both from the same world.

The retcons really started with empire depends on if you except vader as the father in V, and leia as the sister in VI or say its horseshit because that was not there when he wrote star wars 77.

When i see star wars when Obi Wan says Vader killed Luke's father that sounds literal and not like obi wan is lying.  Lucas started by making him a horrible liar in V and then look at how much of a deceiving asshole he is by the prequels which are supposed to have been written before the other movies but were written in the late 90's to 2000's.

Sometimes i wonder how different it would be if the brackett script with Vader as the slayer of Lukes father and not his dad had been made.  And if we really had a revenge of the jedi where the purpose is for luke to avenge his teacher and his father.  But that would also have been at the time less mythic .

What do you LIKE about the EU?
Time

I could not get into choices of one it sucked.

There is stuff in there that seems out of continuity with the other Zahn novels like Mara meeting Luke in this book, when she only casually sees him once in jabba's palace and misses a chance to kill him according to the Zahn trilogy, and only meets him after palpatine is long dead and working for karrde.

I also don't buy her being duped into thinking palpatine and the empire is good in the way it is done in the book, just like the troopers in this book and allegiance.

The moral relativist crap is beyond retarded and has no place in star wars pre prequels, the prequels made star wars crappy shades of grey where their were no good guys even the jedi were as bad as the sith.
