What was the "fatal flaw" of the Prequels if you think they sucked? (aka. Let's take a break from hating on the blu-rays)
Time

Pixar's biggest inspiration is a true artist and his studio, Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, not George "i once was a good director now i am a hack" Lucas.

The only Lucas connection i can see is they developed the cgi tools ILM uses.

But at the time Lucas did not want to make animation so he sold the group to steve jobs who sold the group to disney.

LETS PRETEND: A Star Wars Technicolor print is for sale
Time

I once saw a print of such up for sale on ebay.  It did not sell because the asking price was too high, the guy who was willing to pay the steep price did not purchase it because it did not have the original crawl.

I believe the baltimore screened print was the same as the one this uk collector owned and had up for sale once.

Doubt he will ever list it again cause if Lucas got his hands on it he would destroy it.

Making his copy the only one left in the world, we must not allow such a thing to happen.

There is also the fact that licensed copyrighted motion pictures especially 35mm, or 70mm cannot be bought traded or sold.

I have no idea where companies like Lucasfilm stand on super8mm or 16mm prints, the only authorized copies long out of print and only authorized for sale in the united kingdom. Like Derann and only super8.

Most 16mm i know of unless they are military prints, library prints, rental prints, or prints made for conventions, are duped off a release print not from a negative and are therefore illegal copies.

How many bootleg 16mm copies exist is anyones guess, but the telltale sign is usually lack of sharpness and the dupey qaulity.

The prints that were sold on the super8forums were made from a  negative in the 1990's, i have no idea where that gentleman procured them but apparently they were official Lucasfilm prints.

The "NOOOOOOOOOOOO" Thread
Time

Does the no i screamed at the theater showing of crystal skull when the mayan temple transformed into an alien ship, does that count?

Total facepalm moment, i was like wtf Lucas, nuked fridges, gophers, shia lebouf being tarzan but that final moment cemented for me, on top of aliens, area 51 and the saran wrap fake skull, that this was one horrible movie worthy of mystery science theater 3000.

I almost walked out of this film 3 times.  Each time i said to myself as i sat back down i trust Spielberg it will get better, boy was i wrong.

Literally his worst film since 1941 and Lucas worst since Howard the Duck and Radioland Murders if you can forget those supposed star wars movies that were made 1999 and afterwards.

It was not just a no, i was a oh hell fuck no, Lucas you ruined Indiana Jones just like you ruined star wars.

I'll go with RLM's view that they did not have a sympathetic protagonist. If we could have liked and identified with Anakin, maybe the prequels would have been mediocre instead of putrid.

George Lucas himself changed.

After he left star wars in 1983 he should have never revisited it, no special edition, no prequels and we would have a perfectly restored oot on blu ray.

Instead we have the Vader Saga of NOOOOOOOOOOO!

I'd rather the Ewoks look creepy than like teddy bears.

I disagree strongly. Although it is only my opinion the film should look like a film and remain as the 1983 version was, that i first saw in 1985 on the silver screen.

All the bad cgi additions to the films since the 90's are all neither needed nor add any charm to the films, in fact they remove a lot of charm from the era in which they were made to being some bad redo that fits no time really.  When the originals were timeless.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

What kind of world are we living in Howard the Duck gets an HD transfer and a DVD release based on that, its the theatrical version restored in 5.1 audio uncut, and the star wars trilogy got released in 2006 as a non anamorphic bonus disc from 1993 D1 master tape, the same used for the THX laserdiscs, in subpar to DVD quality.

There is more of a chance of the Holiday Special being released than Lucas spending millions on a restoration of films he hates.

As fans we may have suffered through the special editions, the prequels, the gout, the bad 2004 dvds and now the blu rays.  But the destruction of star wars trilogy is far from comeplete since the 3-D versions are in the planning.

And there is no guarantee Lucas will stop there.

Criterion obtains Godzilla '54!
Time

They almost once got godzilla, rather gojira on laserdisc but it was cancelled you can still find the page for it on laserdisc database.

The other companies dvd with commentary was basically a ripoff of what criterion usually offers, minus a good quality dvd print of the film.

I still find it disgusting that as a company toho allegedly destroyed those old negatives as a clearance move, they also did so with kurosawa films.

In the past before the saving of such things became a profitable asset.

What's your Personal Canon?
Time

Am i the only one who liked the Shadows of the Empire N64 game?

Not that i would add it to me personal canon.

I also did not care much for Dash Rendar ripoff of Han, or his outrider ripoff of the falcon.

But i liked the hoth level.  The train level against ig 88, the battle with fett etc.

I really did not appreciate the added shadows of the empire CGI to star wars in 1997 however like the cgi bike lifted straight from the same files used in the game.

Like the gangster who almost hits the ronto and the jawa goes wooah!, that was utter shit. Like Jar Jar steeping in poop.

Interview With Richard Marquand Director of Return of the Jedi (June 1983)
Time

I think the first choice the American director was Spielberg, but since Lucas left the DGA, and Spielberg was a member he could not be used, i am sure Lucas tried to work something out and was unsuccessful.  Lucas had a hell of a fun time doing raiders with Spielberg and described it as the best possible collaboration experience.

He also tried to get Ron Howard to direct the Phantom Menace, and wanted Spielberg for possibly attack of the clones or revenge of the sith.

Still Lucas never returned to the guild and he still has yet to let the grudge end.

Also word got around Hollywood just the allegedly atrocious way and controlling manner Lucas had treated the other directors, on empire and on jedi, and so no director even if Lucas was in the guild would touch it. The man's ego was a huge obstacle.

For the longest time he and Francis were not on speaking terms either according to Skywalking because of the the size of the two  griant egos.

He has never amicably patched things up with Marcia, somewhat understandable, but his grudge against kurtz, and Prowse make no sense.

Wonder if he ever patched things up with milius probably not, he never did patch things up with Dykstra.

You either supposedly follow general Lucas orders or you are out of his circle forever.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

I thought Matt and Trey were a bit extreme in that indiana jones south park episode, but now i see they were right on the money.

The sad thing fans love the abuse and will pay the 90 dollars to see their favorite movies violated once again, and then again in 3-D.

I was split on whether to get the blu ray and maybe see the 3-D version of phantom menace but i shall now boycott both.

Canceled order.

Cannot wait for hot waffles to update their song to include mention of the blu ray.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

So its a halfassed fixed version, no color timing fixed, lightsabers still wrong, garbage mattes claimed removed in 1997 and 2004 still there etc.

Par for the course as usual they only care about making money.

Lazy Lucasfilm was lazy.

They gave lowry less than 30 days to do the entire trilogy last time, and this time they claim they spent three years and a lot of time, money and research spent on this blu ray.

Is this complete and utter false advertising as of yet, will they get away with it once again? and history will be repeated it will be 2004 all over again and the Lucas gusher blogs will be all kissass again.

Are we even absolutely sure these are the blu rays that will street or its not an elaborate hoax?

I mean sure it fits right up there with disbelieving Hayden would be inserted into Jedi in 2004, or that We would see Aliens in Indiana Jones IV and Area 51 in 2008.

Strangely based on Lucas mentality since 1994 this kind of bizarre strangeness is not unexpected.

RETURN OF THE JEDI story LP (Released)
Time

Can't wait to see the finished product and sit down and watch it.

When i was a kid this was my only way of revisiting the movie, as there was no vhs of the movie then, and anyway we did not have a vhs only a hifi stereo with subwoofers and i would sit down in a worn out old chair and imagine the movie as i listened to it.

One thing that always annoyed me though was the alternate yub-nub song on the LP, its not the film version it is the alternate take as found on the anthology set and original album, where the real film version was on the fourth cd in the anthology set.

Original colour of Luke and Obiwan's lightsabres
Time

Tyrphanax said:

Perhaps they flicker through slight changes in colour depending on lighting or angle-of-view?

Exactly.  The 3M material did that as far as i know.

The added glow was animation done frame by frame as far as i am aware through rotoscoping.

If you watch the 76 trailer you see that the prototype sabers a work in progress were white.

I always thought Luke's sword in Star Wars was White-Blue, more Solid Blue in Empire, and of course in Jedi he has that green one with a hilt like Obi's from star wars.

I don't have a personal canon.  The canon i consider is in light of the oot.  Not the revision of the 90's not the real prequel canon story original planned and then discarded for cgi masturbation on screen.

The canon is the oot films, the novelizations, original screenplays, comics adapted from the screenplays, and the first 2 radio dramas.

In this canon its From the adventures of Luke Skwalker, though Vader's story is central to the saga it is not Darth Vader's 6 film epic bs.

proof that they have done no colour correction whatsoever to these movies. take ESB for example. Now one side id the blu-ray and the other is the 2004 HDTV versions. Now tell me which one is which?

The blu ray looks a tiny bit better, but not by enough to drop 90 dollars on the saga set, unless you are buying it strictly for the deleted scenes of the oot and the oot making of docs.

The only real upgrade other than less compression from an HDTV rip, is that the audio is going to be in HD DTS Master audio 6.1.

No new scans, no color correction, its really a joke to even consider this Lucas final version when we know the next one is  five to six years away and in 3-D.

What do you LIKE about the EU?
Time

The newest fate of the jedi book was even worse than the last one, ascension is a giant pile of horse crap..

Cannot wait to see how Troy screws up the ending in the last book apocalypse.

This book series was so bad it makes the NJO, the bug trilogy and legacy of the force tolerable by comparison, if you forget they killed off so many characters in those books.

Traviss may have not been my favorite writer but at least she could write star wars. Her replacement does not fit star wars well at all, after all Christie Golden is a star trek writer.

She wrote one good book out of 3 not bad for a newcomer, for Allston to write 2 out of 3 bad ones is inexcusable and he did so in this 9 book series.

These blu-ray rips are legit. i have just found the first alteration done to ROTJ. They have redone the Ewoks eyes. They have also added blinks.

Please tell me you are joking.  lucas further runing another directors film, one who is dead and cannot defend his movie.

I am so fed up with Lucash and his yes men allowing this travesty.

As one of the few fans who actually liked 1983's ROTJ i am incensed with these changes, i suppose adding Hayden was just the beginning of the end for this film.
