Shatner on SW vs. ST
Time

Puggo - Jar Jar's Yoda said:

Skyjedi - I respectfully disagree.

The rest of you seem a little humor-impaired.  Isn't it obvious that most of the time Shatner is joking?  Or at least engaging in hyperbole just to be fun?  A lot of the time he's struggling to keep a straight face.  There's nothing to be so sensitive or offended about.

Shatner does enjoy trolling the trekkies, he has been doing it for a long time.

He does not see star trek as sacred anymore than Roddenberry both were in it to make money.

Its cultural icon status is firmly outside of the workaday world of television and film production.

Its beyond some people that they do it to earn a living and as a job.

Star Trek and Star Wars have been creepily elevated to quasi religious or cult status.

STAR WARS - Special Widescreen Edition (Technidisc) (Released)
Time

Thanks for making this available.

Even if its quite true this is the worst of the pressings on LD for the pre THX widescreen version, at least its a nice rarity and it looks like its from a different film source than the other ones.

There is more detail but as with laserdisc sometimes the softer transfers on an old crt looked better because they hid the problems in the video.

Analog Video Noise is something that always is anoying on laserdiscs.

An X0 player would help in this regard were the LD not plagued with problems.

But no Laserdisc of star wars is not free of problems.  The definitive collection had its own problems, and so did the JSC.

I don't think they were ever meant to be used as reconstructions of the oot, because in a sane world that would come from Lucas himself and 35mm film sources.

John Williams vs. Prequel Trilogy
Time

I am going by how every soundtrack release after the anthology was butchered or incomplete or improperly remixed, except for star wars itself.

We are talking about george lucas here and sony classical who have repackaged the same release multiple times.

They finally found the first gen masters for jedi but Lucas is too poor to have them transferred, just like he is too poor to restore the oot.

Puggo the only Star Trek that fits that mold of "They tended to not incorporate such ethical dilemmas that seemed the cornerstone of the original series."

Is JJ Abrams Star Trek 2009.

All the TV series dealt with issues, yes even enterprise and Voyager.  The best shows after the original being next generation and deep space nine.

The Art of the Prequels
Time

The prequels don't fail purely on a visual level, they fail at telling a good story, having good acting and a good screenplay.

The only film in the whole bunch that seemed to have any humanity at all was the phantom menace and was the only one that was a film, but still was a big drop in quality from return of the jedi.

Hayden Christensens's acting i find to be so painfully bad i cannot even watch episode II or III without wanting to hit the mute button whenever he talks.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

Pros for laserdisc over vhs and dvd.  No region code and no macrovision.

Pros over Blu ray no drm.

Hacks or ways to bypass macrovision and dvd region lockouts were taken care of though not necessarily legal under USA laws.

Blu ray could have been without region codes or lockouts but Sony and some studios did not want that because of reverse importation.

While a Blu ray movie that is in region A say a japan release will also work in the USA, a Blu ray pS3 game will not.

Worst Dialogue from............................The Phantom Menace!
Time

I wish the line hisen to be pounded unto death, was in the finished film its in the screenplay.

The scene when qui gon asked what is to become of jar jar binks.

Pounded unto death this one, and jar jar goes ouch ouch.

Worst dialogue in menace.

Other than the jar jar scenes i cannot really think of one or maybe one of anakin's line deliveries by Jake Lloyd

I can think of multitudes for clones and sith.

off-topic: for those who don't know Kino Video, they work with a lot of public domain movies (Phantom of the Opera, Nosferatu etc) and their releases are considered rather high quality. They're the guys who currently release the restored versions of Metropolis.

Yes they restored the premiere cut of metropolis, and are releasing the Moroder version next.

They actually care a bit more than Lucasfilm when it comes to film preservation and the presentation of the movies on DVD/blu ray.

Like Criterion or Warner bros, despite warners making some mistakes they are nowhere as bad as Lucas and his army of folks that cannot get anything right.

If GL changed his mind about releasing OUT, but with a few tweaks.....

If George was to give in to pressure in releasing the Original Unaltered Trilogy (or the Classic Trilogy as he now calls them) on Blu-ray, especially now with all the negative attention, he would inform us that he would be sending the original film stock to Lowry Digital, make a future proofed 4k (or higher) scan......but insisted on cleaning up the movies.....fixing mistakes, composites.....poor visual effects.....but nothing too drastic......no Greedo shooting first,....no Jabba in ANH.....

Would that be acceptable?

J

NO! it would not be acceptable, Just scan the darn movies no frickin lowry recoloring or dvnr.

Scan the negative and missing segments from other sources at 8K get someone to color time them to the original releases.  Perhaps using the 1997 as a source.

REVAN... THE NOVEL!!!!
Time

Supposedly this novel is being written as background on the sith empire in the old republic game, Revan goes to the unknown regions etc.

It is believed this is going to fill in the missing chapter that was KOTOR III.

Wish it was a game.

I wish bioware would just redo the trilogy after finishing mass effect 3 of course.  Then we could have Kotor 1-3 and a single player experience with graphics similar to the mass effect games.

The Old Republic while an interesting idea is not really my style of game.

Are the original prints of each film still out there?
Time

I wonder what kind of negative Lucasfilm sent derann.

They only had star wars and Return of the jedi and never Empire strikes back.

Earlier prints run off were incredibly sharp but the last ones rolled out were not as good.

These were the same as the 35mm versions of the film, not sure if star wars was just star wars or it had the episode IV,

Jedi was identical to the 35mm engagements of 1983 and 1985, only the stereo dolby audio was folded into monaural.  And it was super8mm scope.

Of course magnetic sound and not optical.
