Twelve Reasons "Star Wars" (aka ANH) Suckz
Time

Hoth-Nudist said:

Yeah!  Right on the money! I mean Luca$ should've totally chucked this in the can and instead, continue to fight for the rights to Flash Gordon!  ;-)

Flash has been ruined enough by other people, good lord someone of Luca$ caliber could do even more damage.

The only decent thing would have been King Features would keep the rights so the original versions would not get buried.  Unlike with Star Wars where Lucas has the rights.  If fox did we would have the oot on blu ray.

As for mocking what is wrong with star wars and empire strikes back, its all the crap in the special editions not the originals.

Things like in Star Wars 1997:

Han Steps on Jabba's tail

Greedo Shoots

lame cgi ruined a classic movie etc.

In empire:

Jango Fett voice

Alert my stardestroyer to prepare for my arrival

In Jedi:

Hayden in the ghost scene, jar jar celebrating on naboo and noooooooo when Vader throws the emperor down the death star core.

OFFICIAL: Library of Congress had original prints replaced with 1997 SE
Time

I am surprised this really has been a surprise to people. Where have they been since 1995?

Even the gout has been recalled and the 2004 dvd's.  Lucas wants the 2011 blu ray version to be the only version available.  We got the gout only because of marketing and Jim Ward.

Yet he wanted to give an unfinished version the 1997 to the LOC?

And Spike Tv still shows the 2004 in HD and SD.

So much for a definitive final version.  I doubt the blu ray is that either as the 3-D release be coming as well.  He is far from being done destroying star wars.

As long as people are dumb enough to buy into it the 3-D release will happen as will Indiana Jones V.  I am boycotting now and in the future all Lucasfilm products.

I saw the deleted scenes so i did not buy the blu ray, the only way Luca$ willl get another dollar of my money is a restored oot.

THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)
Time

Funny that the penciled reference is to a Paul Golding/Lucas USC film film that is unavailable.

In fact i have not been able to find the Emperor, or Anyone lived in a pretty how town, or Herbie either.  Nor the full version of the desert tone poem.

Someone uploaded a very good quality version of filmaker on youtube.]

Freiheit, electronic labyrinth and a man and his car are all on DVD.

See if Lucas won't restore the oot there is very little reason for him to pay to restore the student films, which the master negatives are probably in USC's holdings anyway. I think Lucas has lower quality copies. See the bonus THX short on the directors cut DVD, that is pretty poor quality in comparison to other releases i have seen. The only positive thing the grain was not removed and the audio is the real mono track and not a fake 5.1 as on the short films dvd.

Info: Original Trilogy on CED preservations? (3 OT CED released projects in here)

just for fun,

here's a comparison shot of the CED version

to the new bluray picture... yikes.. pretty small!

(image scaled down, but the ratio is correct).

later

-1

It is pretty screwed up that of the images above the ced looks better color wise than the blu ray, Luca$ is crazy if he thinks that is the definite image.

The Ced is blurred and washed out but still much closer to the theatrical colors, lol.

Puggo Strikes Back! (Released)

By the way, I have pretty much decided to produce both an upscaled version, and a standard DVD-5 version.  The reason being, there are still a lot of people out there who are only prepared to deal with standard DVDs, and so I think more people will see it if it is also produced in that format.  Plus it's kinda fun to make the menus and throw on an extra or two.  It shouldn't change the schedule to make it in both formats simultaneously.  Thoughts?

Sounds pretty fantastic to me i have both the grande and the swedish on a dvd-5.

What was the "fatal flaw" of the Prequels if you think they sucked? (aka. Let's take a break from hating on the blu-rays)
Time

Beyond Lucas horrible scripts and directing, David Tatterstall's boring ho hum cinematography, i think the absolute worst actually is Ben Burtt editing and too much sound effects and not enough John Williams.

Burtt instead of being a collaborator as in the original trilogy is largely solely responsible for the final mixes.

Region-free Blu-Ray
Time

Japan Anime is region A just like we have in the States.

The only reason i could see for having a modded player is if you wanted those same anime masters at cheaper prices, by buying the hong kong version or taiwan releases instead of paying the exorbitant prices in Japan.

Since you could pay as much as four hundred us dollars for a boxset of blu ray discs from Japan and the same could be had if released in the us for 90 dollars i think that is a very good reason to not import.

Depends on what series or movies are worth it to you and if they are true 1080P or shitty upscales as being animated only in 480 and not HD, of course anything animated on film is already good enough for HD.

Whether they toy with the colors or add dvnr.

The old Star Wars comics - general discussion thread
Time

My favorite are the Al Williamson books printed by Russ Cochrane.

Just wish i could find scans of the color Sunday pages.  Not the redo  done by dark horse under the title classic star wars.

His star wars books are great but not as good as the art he did on Secret agent Corrigan.  On that he was almost at Alex Raymond Rip Kirby level of excellence.

Dinner with Lucas
Time

I would ask Columbus about his Indiana Jones script.

Kind of worse than Last Crusade in places but at least Brody is not a moron in it.

As for George i would ask him about trying to erase the oot from existence and his 1984-ing of history, but then i would get thrown out by security.

Before i got thrown out i would ask Francis about why in gods name he made Godfather 3 and had the brilliant idea of casting his daughter.

My Top 10 Reasons ROTJ sucks
Time

Sonnyboo's argument is very valid imho, when viewed through the saga 1-6 mentality Lucas has been using since the later 1990's.

My Star Wars Saga i grew up with is 1977-1983 and that is the valid way i watch the films.

I consider everything else to be added stuff not a part of the original film canon.  This includes any of the 3 special editions of the original trilogy, but most especially the prequels as written and filmed and not as originally conceived in the seventies and then updated with the changes made in empire strikes back and return of the jedi.

I can except the Vader as father and Leia as the sister retcons. The sister one being the weaker of the two, but the prequels went way beyond that, they completely and ridiculously contradicted the oot. To such a degree Lucas actually has had to change things story wise with the bad cgi re-edits and still they don't match as a whole puzzle put together.

Jedi is a fun movie.  Its entertaining and re-watchable at least to me.

If i had to sit in the cinema through any of the prequels again i would fall asleep from boredom or bring a book to read, lol.

3 of the most boring overhyped cgi spectacles with no plot and zero story ever conceived, even Bayformers are not as bad because at least they don't pretend to be something they are not.

Star Trek TNG on BluRay confirmed !
Time

Its only a teaser of 3 episodes on blu ray as taken from the o-neg according to that trailer.

I guess the whole thing being done would depend on sales or if they can get a  syndicated  tv deal for a zillion stations to show it.

I mean not many people are going to pony up money for encounter at farpoint and those other 2 episodes.  Its not like this is the best of both worlds or yesterday's enterprise.

If i recall the original series was only afforded by the HD-DVD people funding it.

Song Of The South - many projects, much info & discussion thread (Released)
Time

Too much dirt and grain in that for a modern home video transfer, still would make a nice rarity i mean if you were rich enough to buy it.

Not too many years ago a print of star wars in 35mm IB tech was at auction for the starting bid price of 2000 dollars.  It went for like 4000 but the bidder did not pay and the item was removed and never re-listed.

The gentleman who owned that print is the same guy who loaned it to the place in Baltimore.

For that price of song of the south you could purchase the entire original star wars trilogy and in LPP too on 16mm. Or at least a few years ago you could now i think because of Lucas tactics these items prices will skyrocket.

They finally found the first gen masters for jedi but Lucas is too poor to have them transferred, just like he is too poor to restore the oot.

Where did you hear about this, Sky?

An Old blog that the author of somehow had contact with people who worked on the soundtracks.  Like the Anthology and RCA releases.

This before the guy who wrote it took it down.

Not sure entirely but the story is they found the recordings after the rushed mix for jedi special edition was finished sitting under some old boxes in the lucasfilm archives.

Idea: 35mm Transfer - make a preservation project from it?
Time

timdiggerm said:

Oh, I guess I should have asked this here:

Why is 35mm equipment so much more expensive than 16mm?

To keep it out of the hands of pirates would be one reason it is not available usually at the consumer level.

Another reason is parts and repair are costly, the build quality of the optics used is also expensive.

Sure you could get cheap 35mm surplus parts and build your own rig to make a movie, but i am sure you would be better off renting the equipment.

If Kodachrome was still available it would be better to shoot on 8mm or 16mm, but since that is phased out there is now no consumer grade even measurable by the pro level tech.

Film students and independents almost exclusively now use HD video.  Its sad but true.

It's been a while since I've gotten back to this board. I've recently acquired a piece of equipment that will capture 16mm film and it''s audio really well.  I need to send it out for an upgrade that will take me a couple of months.

I can't remember who it was that expressed an interest in the audio from my 16mm film of SOTS but if you would post we can maybe discuss getting a wav from the 16mm to you, but like I say it will still be a couple of months.

I believe that was me.

I don't want it for a project i was just interested in how good the audio on 16mm print is after seeing puggo's star wars aka grande.

Mr good friend Dr G who was the main guy keeping the mentor cap alive might be interested in it as well, who knows.
