Star Wars movie prints WOULD benefit from this...can you hear me Mr. Lucas...
Time

Seeing as Lucas is a billionaire if he wanted it he could have the best scanning equipment money could buy.

But you already know that.

It is more of a is it worth it for him money wise considering the expense of restoring the version he would prefer stay buried.

Because the version of the trilogy my generation despises with Hayden at the end is the version that broke BD sales records, nail in coffin.

Idea & Request: Kiki's Delivery Service Streamline/Carl Macek English dub
Time

There is also the possibility that the unnamed individual on that other site is waiting for the BD of KIKI.  Which is now on pre-orders for region A japan if not a North American release.

Keeping me eyes open on that site to see if something happens.

Remember the track is mono in one of the split stereo channels in analog.  It is not full bitrate pcm or even lower bitrate ac3 or even in stereo.

Now that i think of it since the redone KIKI's script is remarkably similar to the earlier effort minus the 80's references and the much funnier Jiji by Phil Hartman.  The Japanese Company was happy with that DUB originally it is entirely possible that the older dub either is sonically limited being dual mono, or that the actual source master was lost or they just wanted a more modern one.

The American Release on Laserdisc was on offer in AC3 sound for the Newer dub.

Macross: Do You Remember Love? (Released)

This is also a case where someone else changes a film after the Director is dead.  Here the co-director wanted the changes.

At least its not called a directors cut like the recut of Space battleship Yamato Rebirth.  When Nishizaki was in the grave.   Referring to notes hardly counts, lol.

In that case however looks like the director/creator's wishes were honored.  Not sure if DYRL original director wanted these changes.

I have the Laserdisc but no one has volunteered to cap the audio.

I was willing to send it to someone at one point.   Has to be someone i can trust that will actually return the laserdisc when they are done.

Someone on Bakabt.me forums was supposed to cap the audio and mux it with a pal video source but that never happened.

The Secret History of Star Wars

Thanks, I never knew that Lucas was so strongly influenced by Vietnam war. He used World War 2 aircraft dogfight clips as "animatics" for the spacefighter combat after all (surprising coincidence - fighters in X-Wing games fly at comparable speed to WW2 planes).

Interesting how the "point of sitting" defines the "point of view". The Vietnam war never came to my mind when watching Star Wars (OK, maybe only during the ROTJ jungle fight with Ewoks). It's quite natural for a person with European background to see Rebel Alliance as the resistance movement fighting against the Nazi Germany, using "hit and run" tactics, captured weapons, infiltration, espionage etc. Many of those Bothans died to bring us the V-1 plans, right?

I also see the Revolutionary war in star wars, but it may be applicability rather than outright allegory.  The rebels remind me of the American colonies, the empire the British crown.

The WW2 stuff though is definitely there in things like the guns, the uniforms the fascism of the empire.  Biggs mention of nationalizing commerce has to be a direct reference to the Nazi's sadly that scene was cut.

Well as we discussed elsewhere, the 35mm version has a lot of white clipping that may or may not have been intentional.

I don't think that clipping is ever intentional. Which 35mm version are you talking about, one of the 35mm prints -1 had acquired? As I understand it, interpositives has lower contrast than regular release print stock, to take into account for the contrast that builds up in the internegative and release print stages, I'm sure there are differences between different prints and what film stock it is. But what's going on in the case of what we are seeing on the video transfers on the Technidisc or the GOUT is obviously clipping introduced when they did the transfers, nothing unusual.

If Gout was taken as has been guessed from the original D1 tapes, not sure if it was the limitations of those tapes or at the telecine stage that the clipping was introduced.  Clearly its one or the other.

That along with the early not quite sophisticated or modern dvnr which was harshly applied, to remove the extra layers of grain on the IP produced the mess that is the GOUT.  A fine transfer for the laserdisc era, but not good enough in the DVD era much less blu ray.

The extra grain would have appeared as noise on laserdisc and old tv sets.

So was not really a duh why did they do that thing.  Until 2006 and dumped to DVD.

The Mono Mix Restoration Project (Released)
Time

You have access to something that has the mono mix in better quality than we already have, but its incomplete right?

the 35mm mono optical still has to be higher fidelity than nth generations of VHS tapes of the bootleg or itv uk broadcast, or even the 16mm puggo grande.

I have a movie on DVD with its original mono mix and no noise reduction and it sounds better than the stereoized pop and click removed version on the same disc.

Lucas called the mono mix the definitive mix of the film.

When Star Wars was originally released and at the time was his vision of the film as realized.   Before he was seduced by the dark side of digital edit tinkering and cgi.

Godzilla 1985 MonstersHD (* unfinished project - with info & ideas *)
Time

What is the quality of Godzilla 84 on blu ray.  Some of the TOHO blu rays are in abominable quality. Unlike the Gojira release by Criterion which was superior than both the original TOHO blu and the US blu ray original.

Which was a black and white movie and not widescreen and in mono sound.  The 1984 color remake was of course in color and stereo sound and anamorphic widescreen.

the 1984 version is not excessively grainy the color film stock is relatively clean in the prints i have seen.

Of course the scenes where there are several generations away from the original because of the optical effects will always be slightly off with the live footage which is usually the case with pre cgi films.  Especially when the live action footage is taken from the o-neg.

Still this was when movies were still films and did look like films and not video.  An era of movies i much prefer to the current cgi crop.

Info: The Making of The Empire Strikes Back (Michel Parbot)
Time

Other than the short sidebar mention in Rinzler's book this will remain forgotten.

But the Blu Ray did not include new transfers of the 4 making of specials that were released and  only 3 were included and from star wars to jedi has since been buried.

If Lucas cannot even bother scanning existing prints, much less the negatives for the other making of specials and restoring them what is the chance of releasing a once only aired in Europe special for TV?

Just to put things into perspective other than the previous unreleased and not restored deleted scenes the blu ray did not include the original versions of the films but also no new scans of the negative for the 2011 special edition, they dumped an existing stuck at 1080P transfer done on antiquated 2004 tech on the blu ray.  This is unacceptable for a billionaire who has the cash for a proper presentation of these films.

James Bond 007 Thread
Time

The limited edition poster book adds an additional hundred dollars to the price of the set though.  Not worth it in my opinion unless you are a bond mega fan.

Still no word on whether or not they corrected Goldeneye.

I never bought the super expensive briefcase set of the U.E. DVD's like some in the Euro regions did.  But would not be surprised if the US set is more expensive as the dollar is virtually worthless now.

Raiders of The Lost Ark in IMAX!
Time

Yeah too bad it looks like my theater is only showing DLP and not film.  Sorry but i will stay home.

It will look no better than the Blu Ray.

Trying to confirm if the Imax is real imax and on film or just digital.  As i would still go see raiders instead of the 4 film presentation if so.

Saw DKR on DLP and it is garbage.  Overly soft picture was worse than most blu rays i have seen.

Have any of the actors from the original movies ever commented on the prequels?
Time

I took the oot actors comments on the sw prequels in the same way i did the original trek actors and their  thoughts on star trek the next generation.

Some of whom later confessed next gen was a good series in its own right, but i wonder how many did that so Paramount would not cut them off as they made money doing the convention circuit.

Mark Hamill was right  the prequels are not genuine star wars movies.

Bond | Casino Royale (1954) preservation (Released)
Time

I think the shorter version did get released as a special feature on one of the spoof casino royale's dvd's.   The full uncut version has never been on DVD.  A number of years ago there was a bootleg floating around the internet but now impossible to find probably.  Since it was simply a cap of the vhs and not a very high quality one at that.  I think it was released as an Xvid.

Whomever now owns the copyright to MGM after bankruptcy has no reason to track down a tv print and waste time and money to transfer it considering it was never an ION production.  Much like the spoof, and Never say never again.

Is "Empire Strikes Back" really George Lucas' least favorite?
Time

Considering star wars cost him his marriage i can understand why he has a love/hate relationship with it and treats it solely as a method for a cash profit.

I can also understand his hatred of Empire because it going over budget made him have to go back to Fox to cover the guarantee of the loan, did not fit his vision of a faster and more action packed sequel like Jedi did and on the cheap.

Also if it failed and did not make back its money the Ranch Project was in jeopardy.

Allegedly he considered firing Gary on star wars, he put it off.  Considered firing him on empire and put it off.  Made sure he was not involved in raiders or jedi and was let go.

lucas came pretty close to taking the film away from Kersh and reassembling the footage to fit his vision.  Lucky for us the way he cut the footage did not work.  And Kersh was able to finish his film.

Opinion: The Biggest Missed Opportunity in Star Wars History...
Time

A much later done episode 7 with Hamill could have turned out just as bad as Crystal Skull though, so i am not sure making these sequels would be a good thing.

Interesting to see perhaps but not good unless the Zahn Trilogy could be adapted as films and canonized.

With Luca$ as far away as possible from having anything to do with the films.
