Most of 4 Billion going to charity
Time

I'm all for charity but for this to happen the mouse house gets its hands on Star Wars.  The best thing Lucas ever did was keep the rights to the movies and storylines because Roddenberry had to basically give away everything to get star trek made.

I don't know what other people make of it but no true auteur filmaker would sell out to frickin Disney.  This just proves that Lucas was always a businessman before a filmaker.

The prequels were made for money and nothing else.  The same will apply to these new movies. Except now Lucas won't have to be the one in charge of everything.

Disney Acquires LucasFilm for $4.05 billion, Episode 7 in 2015, 8 and 9 to Follow, New Film Every 2-3 Years
Time

I also suppose that it also means Indiana Jones V will also happen and Lucas is writing three star wars sequels, or at least writing the treatments.

God i don't have internet or power for like three days and after hurricane sandy, and Lucas goes nuts for real this time and sells star wars and Lucasfilm itself.

I feel like i have slipped through some portal into an alternate universe or the twilight zone.

And what the Hell happened to that live action tv series set between episodes 3 and 4 and there being no more star wars films.  I guess 4 billion is the price to change some ones mind.

I also suppose that means we will have like 14 seasons of the clone wars cartoon, because they want to make money of this thing.

Star Wars movie prints WOULD benefit from this...can you hear me Mr. Lucas...
Time

And here i was browsing the pristine shiny new BD's in the store and i remembered that the real star wars  trilogy 1977-1983 was nowhere to be found and it all came back to me just how much Luca$h sucks.

Spielberg also stinks to recoloring raiders to look like a cartoon with blown out colors, but i think that is a separate yet strangely connected subject since it is also a Lucasfilm and we cannot get a Lucasfilm on BD untoyed with unless its temple of doom or last crusade as some claim they did not screw with those.

MY Neighbor Totoro BD.  The morons must have gotten to them as they dvnred the movie which they did not do on Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

Too bad morons who like films to look like video have to ruin for those who want their films untouched.

Not degrained too all hell but it is certainly the disney level of so called restoration which Miyazaki said he would avoid on BD.

The movie content has not been changed however and it is a noticeable improvement over the dvd.

They did not include the older english dub however and i hate the disney one.

The Clone Wars: Season V
Time

Dave is something of an asset his work on Avatar the last airbender was good.  Too bad Luca$ won't allow Clone Wars to be as good though there are times when it comes close like the Mortis arc.

There are also ways in which this series outshines Genndy's series as you have more focus on female characters and actually maybe for the first time female writers there were none on the movies unless you count Leigh Brackett and her draft was not used on empire.  That or the small incidental snappy lines that Gloria Katz wrote for star wars.

Star Wars in this serial format of short episodes almost comes off like star trek, not sure if that is a good or bad thing.

To me star wars is meant to be huge and epic made for the silver screen.

While the animation and writing is as good or better than say Thundercats remake or Transformers prime it is still primarily a children's cartoon like those shows and obviously marketed to sell toys.

Info: James Bond - Laserdisc Preservations: 1962-1971
Time

Maybe its a matter of choice but i really like the colors on the criterion Bond's but especially DR No.  There is no way to say if the colors are correct.  When ever a transfer from film to video is done the operator makes the color decisions or tweaks if any.  At least as far as i know the way they did it in the old days.

The restored CAV boxset of Thunderball i really like the color on too.  But if i had to wager a guess they timed it with a IB tech print for reference as it kind of has that sort of look.  Not sure about the DVD as i don't have the older one.

Live and let die clv letterbox in the US was pressed twice.  The earlier had the defective audio.  When buying it on ebay or lddb the sellers wont usually help you in finding out which version they are selling so you could end up with a ruined bad disc.  This title had the isolated score so that was the only reason i tried to find an unaffected copy to no avail.

I am led to understand that the older bond catalog pre Brosnan had only 3 ac3 releases i wonder if captain solo has those.  He said he had the rarest ones and those were the rarest and last pressed ones in the USA.  Though the world is not enough japan laser is so rare that it sells for thousands in comparison.

Little to no difference between TWINE and the DVD except having it on laser to brag about.  Unlike say X-men which had a different cropping of the picture on the laserdisc than the DVD.

There was no DTS flavor separate release for that either.  Unlike Goldeneye and tomorrow never dies which both got dts and dolby ac3 in japan and the states.  The USA even got a pan and scan laserdisc release of goldeneye i still laugh about that why in gods name would you get that instead of the letterbox release, lol.

I don't have the early foxvideo releases of the catalog titles with the mono mixes of the earlier films retracked into stereo and usually bad laser rot, and time compressed and made pan and scanned and i don't know anyone who has those laserdiscs.  They seem to be avoided for having legendarily bad transfers or something.  I always wondered if those were the same as the ones hbo showed in the early to mid 80's.

If those shots are representative of the actual blu ray then it is indeed a huge fail on the part of the studio.  Looks like they took the DVD from 1999 upscaled it and applied dvnr even if we know it was probably from a 1080i low res in 1999 scan.

The dvd was barely passable and showed not much more definition than the laserdisc.  Apparently a transfer that would have been a good enough transfer for laserdisc was dumped to blu ray, lol.

Hey at least it is not like they pressed a 4:3 letterbox blu ray with black borders on all sides.

the only home release i know of even close to the theater was the pre credit sequence super8mm version.  For some reason they could not get either dvd right, the HDTV right or the blu ray right.  And they just pushed these out the door to meet the release date of skyfall just like paramount did to meet the last star trek film with their lackluster BD releases.

Help Wanted: E.T. The Extra Terrestrial - 2002 1080i HD (* unfinished project *)
Time

Well the non cgi scenes and their color were fantastic in the print i saw in theaters.   The movie underwent a major restoration wonder how the blu ray compares.  Still it is kind of silly they cannot have both versions, though i don't like the walkie talkies and altered dialogue.

I do believe the color timing was different in the special edition.  The color timing on the video releases was not identical to the theatrical for the original version anyway. So there have been many color choices for the film over the years much like the star wars trilogy.

After Spielberg's digital color tinkering of Raiders i am afraid the blu ray won't even be the true theatrical for E.T. colors but possibly a fourth color timing.

Steve is the guy who restored Raiders score for DCC classics in the 90's for an audiophile LP and a standard cd and gold issue CD.

He is not Ben Burtt, but i think he did ask why have they not restored the original trilogy scores or something to that effect for star wars when he got the indy project.

No answer was given obviously.

Audiophile releases of the star wars trilogy newly restored from the earliest elements and album masters/stems on LP and CD would have been great.

Indy Blu-rays announced

So did they do a third transfer of raiders because the japan hdtv broadcast which i assumed was from the 4k restore had the theatrical colors.

Damn now i will have to track that down and it has burned in subtitles.

I am talking about the transfer that made Lowry's look like a joke.

As far as i am aware none of the Lucasfilms Lowry worked on was at a higher resolution than HD 1080P.

Raiders appears to be the first Lucasfilm scanned at 4k or higher.

I am sure George could have just dumped the existing transfers to BD like star wars, but Steven knew better.

In a perfect world we would also see a 4k or higher scan of star wars '77 and an imax release of that without any of the cgi redoes or bad 3D.

Info: SW Teaser Trailer for sale on ebay
Time

Considering not long ago you could get a full print of the film by derann film services of super 8mm or an illegal 35mm scope print for less than that, doubt anyone would bid on that.

Less than a hundred dollars seems okay for the sw teaser if you want it on film, but you can watch that on the 2004 bonus disc in SD quality.

Still i would not pay a hundred unless it retains much of its color.  I would not pay hundreds never mind thousands of dollars for any Eastman pinking film on 35 even if it were legal in the states.   Eastman stock is crud.  Sure for trailers as a collectible or maybe even a print if you can somehow correct the color and get it transferred for posterity.  But to project as is, yuck.  Poor projector.

That Jedi 70mm real which was roughly 20 minutes of footage went for a hundred and 40 bucks.  Kind of steep but rare, nonetheless.

I thought it would be a steal and no one else would bid and i would get it for 40 bucks even, lol.

Info: SW Teaser Trailer for sale on ebay

Seeing as all the teaser trailers are on Eastman stock pre lpp, and are not rare, since many were made.  Depends on what its worth to you.

I think 50 dollars for a trailer in pretty good condition is a fair price.

Not sure if any of the  re-release trailers are LPP.

Cannot find out either because the last one posted was too much.

When they charge hundreds for a trailer it is pretty ridiculous.  I saw a complete 35mm scope print for jedi unfaded LPP sell for 400 dollars about a decade ago on some film site.

Possibly stolen not sure where people get these things.  He had the original jedi for that price but the 1997 special edition star wars for over 2 grand, lol.

The only auction i lost i really regret is the reel of Return of the Jedi in70mm that had the duel between Luke and Vader on the second death star.

Faded but not as severely as the empire prints i have seen.  Except the warpage made the audio and picture out of sync so pretty useless except as a curio.

Scope trailers of the original release or any of the original 3 films prior to 1997 are hard to find though.  Most trailers are flat and have a widescreen image reduced to fit the frame instead of the squeezed image.

Most illegal film cels from cut up prints are taken from trailers as well and not scope prints though some are.

The only licensed film cels i know of were the willets 70mm ones. Unless Lucasfilm licensed dealers to sale the 35mm cut up prints.

Lincoln was in development hell for so long Liam neeson told Spielberg off.

After working with Lucas and Spielberg he must have some stories to tell, horror stories, lol.

You work with moguls that big and ego will be an issue.

Though i do respect Kathy and Frank's work at Disney with the works of Miyazaki and studio Ghibli.  I completely disagree with their backing Lucas destruction of the oot.  But so does Spielberg even though he thinks films should be released untouched now, weird.

God i hope Frank Marshall is right and INDY V is dead in the water.

Lucas quit  as leader at Lucasfilm and retired again, on movie 4 Spielberg and Ford had their arms twisted to do it.  Both who thought the Alien idea was bad but that they owed Lucas because of previous relationships in film and friendship.

They won't publicly say they thought part 4 was shit but they got their payday.

I hope IMDB   is wrong because i have zero interest in Jurassic Park IV and Indiana Jones V.

Would prefer Spielberg make new stand alone films.

What do you LIKE about the EU?
Time

I liked the EU pre prequelisms being too much inserted into things, and also before Lucas actually took a hand in steering the EU, you know when he claimed it was an alternate universe to his and would like to keep them separate.

Lucas involvement lead to the death of characters in the novels.  But not any of the old and grey heroes from the ot.  Still having adventures in their sixties or seventies.

Still cropped incorrectly no new transfer with real theatrical colors and film grain no sale.  Thanks for the info on Goldeneye Captain Solo.

Will have to stick with the original DVD and non anamorphic laserdisc unfortunately since i don't exactly have a scope print lying around and the ability to project it.

Only the Pre Credit sequence was ever released on super8mm.  That and the trailer.  Never a full feature.

I think it was from chc and had stunning color.

Did the New Blu ray even use the theatrical DTS from Goldeneye or the new one which was crap?

If not maybe someday some person will cap the laserdisc audio.

Is there a single film Lowry has worked on on BD that looks like a film and not a dodgy video mess.

The Star Wars trilogy looks like shit but that was done at 1080P back in 2004, not sure when the BOND transfers were done.  I am glad that at least Raiders of the Lost Ark was not dumped to BD from previously existing 1080 master.  Lucasfilm/Spielberg/Paramount also made sure to keep the grain intact and match the theatrical color timing.  If only Fox/Lucasfilm could have only done the same for the star wars oot.

Well at least it is not like with Bond like Lucas and star wars.  They did not insert bad cgi into the Connery films or replace Sean Connery with Daniel Craig in some of the scenes.

Too much DVNR and wrong colors but no Lucasized versions either.  Nor are the real versions of the movies being replaced and left to rot in a vault for an inferior bastardized "original vision" which changes every five years.

If anyone needs ideas for non-star wars vhs films to preserve i have a few! (as I'm sure lots of others do to) :O)

Go on...

Yay!

Here's a couple of titles which I think would have different colour timing on early vhs versions to how they are presented in 2012 and so might be important to preserve: Blade Runner,(http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDReviews24/bladerunner.htm) Apocalpse Now (http://www.avsforum.com/t/1264333/apocalypse-now/510#post_19446351). Blue Velvet looks like its going pink to me on the Blu Ray- certainly its not like the deep blues i saw at the cinema. http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/dvdcompare5/bluevelvet.htm

This will probably have no appeal to anyone but to me the criterion Days of Heaven (1978) also looks like it has pink shift in it to me. The trouble is I don't know how much of me seeing this pink/red shifted is effected by my monitor, which has a definite pink tint. Also I dont know how good/faithful NTSC telecines would be. http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/dvdreviews9/days-of-heaven.htm

The first PAL release of Empire Strikes on VHS I think needs preservation.

Is that Empire tape the pre cert one for Empire.  Did russs ever preserve that tape?

Hopefully it is not a bad ntsc to pal standards conversion as the first issue empire uk laserdisc which also happens to be one of the worst rotters in history of the format next to the first issue star wars UK disc.

Basing this on info grinder gave me.  As even though i have the discs i don't have a pal laserdisc player.

Macross: Do You Remember Love? (Released)
Time

The blu ray is taken from a new transfer with different colors than the HD restored DVD.

Surprised that the studio did not just dump the existing HD master to disc like some Companies do.

What ever fan restoration is enacted is going to be difficult for the reasons stated by others and the above poster.

The previous restoration was better color wise than the unrestored theatrical cut.  But too much dvnr.  Which has the tendency to make things look like video.  Which was also a problem on the tv series hopefully those blu rays at a higher resolution don't look like the mess of the 35mm negative DVD.

Too Clean too much grain removed.  But nicer colors.

It was cool that the limited DVD set offered both the grainy original and cleaner version.  Not so the BD has none of those and an entirely different assembly of the movie. With music altered missing and nonsensical cuts made to violence. Most likely because it was part of a video game release.
