So...how does George Lucas get away with claiming he can't restore the original version again?

The Lynn Hale quote was much more honest that he did not want to devote his money and time to the process.

Because they don't represent his vision.  But since then he has put his foot in it by not just having a company spokesperson but he himself has said "its an oxymoron to include the original version on the blu ray.  The part that has been restored is the digital version so we put that on the blu ray"

When nothing has really been restored since the negative and all existing materials are rotting in a vault a digital version is no restore if there are no new negative copies made of the so called saved version of the movie.  And usually it would be of the original release also not the same here.

Which is why we are where we are with fans having to do the work because a belligerent media mogul/cgi technocrat does not want us to have our cake and eat it too.

Didn't he use the clv discs and not the CAV.  Someone else on these boards captured the rarer CAV coffret set.

I have always wondered if all the European transfers were from the same masters.  As no one has ever preserved the german releases this is just a guess that they are the same as the french releases.

LeeThoroughgood captured the Coffret Set..... :)

Thanks yes Lee did them i was unable to remember that.  The PAL issue of the CAV release in France.

What did the Wookiee become in Splinter Yuzzem's?

Drawing from memory here have not read the book since the 1994 re-release with the Lucas intro.

Both Yuzzems not sure if i spelled that right  , but both Ewoks and Yuzzems were feature in sketches by Ralph M.  For Return of the Jedi other unrelated stuff not done for the film was published in that book he and Kevin Anderson did.

Was talking about the difference in colors between the versions sorry.  I meant the above posting by msycamore.  Was not responding the you or in a negative way.

What i meant was Japan Special Collection Colors versus the Technidisc.

When i first bought the JSC i thought it was close to being good color wise but at the time did not have a calibrated set up.

Was more of a post lamenting the fact that there is no decent version of any of these trilogy films on home video period that comes close to the original release.  And now that they have the tech to do it right to at least approximate the theatrical original release its not going to happen.

Guess i will just have to live with the blu ray or dream of what could have been.

Anyway back to your thread and again apologies for posting in it.  Bye.

Save Star Wars Dot Com
Time

I think i was misremembering one of the early Lucas price quotes for the 3D convert.  That must be why they waited nearly a decade before anything became of it.

Still a 23 million dollar opening for a star wars film is a failure period.

Not sure if the goodwill is still there but he should really have forgone the prequels, crappy movies beyond measure and release even the adulterated original trilogy since he would never in a million years release the oot properly restored much less in 3-D.

If they released the 2011 special edition trilogy they could easily make over a hundred million dollars.  Not a huge windfall after the conversion cost but still a profit.

Making any new original films, or new star wars or indiana jones films is not what Lucasfilm is doing they are releasing 3-D versions of the standard blu ray release for something not even shot in the format.

A complete and utter waste of time and money of course this is opinion but they could have spent the money restoring the other 2 films in the indiana jones trilogy as well as the 3 original star wars films.

Lucas let both the 30th anniversary of star wars and empire happen with no re-release print of those films, i won't hold my breath for one for Jedi either, of a restored theatrical release in may 2013. The book by Rinzler will have to be a consolation prize i guess.

Anyway back to talking about saving the real star wars from 77-83.  Waiting to hear more on the loc actions to save these films from the hands of Lucas.

Spielberg: "I'm no longer a digital revisionist."

Jaws was saved in the production firstly with all of the script re-writes. Then whether consciously or not, Spielberg played to his strengths which is why if you think about it, the film is like a combination of the best elements from Sugarland Express and Duel. Then the editing could only improve and tighten everything up. Though I still think the added head bit was unnecessary.

I could never agree that Spielberg's modern output is better. To me they're just so damn...boring. If you enjoy or prefer them that's fine, but I could hardly stand some of them and became beyond exasperated with things like The Terminal. I think my primary problem with these films is that I never saw much of a point to making any of them. They seemed to exist only on a single story level and little more, so that virtually anybody could have made them. His boundless creativity for storytelling hasn't been present for me in a looong time.

I guess I stick with EOTS as the breaking point because Last Crusade is undone by its tiredness. (Though I loathed The Color Purple and E.T.) I've realized that I only like five of his anyway. (Duel, Sugarland, Jaws, Raiders, Temple)

Temple of Doom has its problems, but trying to remake Raiders is not one of them.  Though it does feel like cobbled together bits left over because it really was if you read the original script.  The Mine Cart chase came from there.  Though they did change the locale, and instead of Just Indy and Marion they had to through in a little kid for comic relief.

Cannot believe i am comparing Last crusade to Crystal Skull but they try to be remakes of Raiders instead of stand alone serial adventures and fail miserably in that regard.  Much like Return of the Jedi has been blasted for being a badly disguised Remake of Star Wars.

Though unless he was just being a marketing guy the fact that he thought Bayformers was good shows how little taste he has these days.  And Tintin was like a little kids Crystal Skull horrible cgi cartoon fest.

Just watched Jedi JSC X9 and the picture quality was atrocious would have to dig out the actual laserdiscs to see if it looks that bad before being converted to digital.  But even after all the de-haloing arnie'd did it still looks like poop.

Seriously i have never been happy with a single home video release of Jedi none have come close to the Cinema theatrical.  The only one color wise that looked close was the PAL release from 2006 and i live in the states so i was pretty screwed on not being able to acquire that.

Still non anamorphic though and still too soft an image.  But whatever they gave FOX of Japan for those later 8O's discs was from a crap source.

Loaned out less than pristine Elements like the Criterion James BOND collection?

I like pre heavy cgi Spielberg and the Spielberg who used to make fun films to watch most of the current era are made for adults or considered more serious.  These days he could never make a film like raiders.

Jaws was a disaster of a movie much like star wars and saved in the editing not the directing, other than the performances he got from the actors.  Something he could do and Lucas could not.

Of course you are right about the 35mm being in HD it was the preview discs sent out to reviewers which must have had the 35mm  audio not in HD.

Well at least it made it into the general release as i am sure fans would have wanted a disc swap program without it.

The excuses for the lack of the 70mm don't hold up however as they don't need to recreate that mix so much as track down someone who has a 70mm mag print that is not warped and destroyed.  But Warners being a billion dollar studio certainly could afford it.

Its like the excuse of the 70mm mix of star wars no longer existing and we all know that fans have prints that have held up audiowise if not picture wise.

Yes despite being almost identical with the 35mm stereo just like star wars there is extra bass and oomph found in the 70mm not found in any other version.

Well until some enterprising rich fan has access to a non warped mag print and a way to get the audio off of it, we won't have those audio tracks.

Yes AotC 3D will be previewed at Celebration VI next week.

Which i find incredible concerning Episode 1 3D bombed at the box office.  And it cost 100 million to convert.

Is George Lucas just now in the idea of losing money because he is a billionaire?  Red Tails bombed as well.

Name three films that should have an IMAX upgrade
Time

Jurassic Park

Back to the Future

Lord of the Rings trilogy

Star Wars oot.

Raiders already was released in 70mm before but not imax.  All three original Indy films got released in 70mm.

If they imaxed raiders. might as well do Doom and Crusade.

And as much as i hate it i think revenge of the Sith's opening space battle would have been spectacular in imax.

As for the rest of the film not sure i could sit through the whole thing, lol.

Star Trek: The Original Series 15 Disc Soundtrack Collection Released by La La Land Records!
Time

Wait a minute i thought they re-recorded the music for star trek remastered because the original music was in bad shape.  Now its in good enough shape for cds?

Now the music gets restored but not used in the restoration of the show, lol.

The source elements were said to be too degraded so they tracked down the actual written scores and re-recorded them.

Not sure if the original musical tracks were in monaural that also may have been a reason for re-recording some of the music.

This was rumored to be in the works a year or two ago and I wrote in asking for more information. (In some crazy hopes of landing some kind of job on the production though I have no drawing skills whatsoever.) It is set up to be a two-part adaptation with each part at about 80 minutes.

Though I applaud their efforts, the animation isn't very exciting to me, being computer generated and in a more Asian style. The storylines also seem to be compressed a bit too much to fit into the PG-13 80 minute timeframe.

And an animated DKR with no Kevin Conroy? Ugh the missed opportunity!

Conroy sounds exactly as i would imagine batman would sound.  Robocop as Batman=fail.

That original trilogy change you wouldn't mind

Hi.

We all hate most of Lucas' changes since the 1981 re-release of Star Wars. I've been thinking about it since I rediscovered the original trilogy, with the GOUT DVDs, what is the change George Lucas could do in a future release of the original trilogy you would see as an improvement?

The only change i would accept is to change them back.  Restore  them to their original pristine state, no expense spared Lucas is a billionaire he can afford it.

This preservation should be out next month, but...

I now see that the information page has been removed from the Caped Wonder website! Is this project dead?

*FROWN*

Probably moving the release date further down the line.

They won't make Christopher Reeve's birthday release not this year.

I suppose its going to be like it will be done when it is done. Like ESB Revisited.

When people have real lives outside of this stuff i suppose that they are even still plugging away at all is better than nothing.

Warners are not going to restore the footage they have in the vaults and release the Salkind TV cut in widescreen probably ever.  Since they could not even be bothered with a decent restoration of superman 1 for blu ray much less the 70mm 6 track audio in HD, or the 35mm stereo in HD.  No they had the bad new 5.1 in HD.

Info Wanted: anyone done a TPM and AOTC colour correction?
Time

They finally got the aspect ratio back to its original correct size as what was seen in theaters on the blu ray and yet then they had to apply harsh digital video noise reduction on the original digital files.  It is somewhat disappointing that they did not go back to scan the film negative.  But then the effects would be at a lower quality so i can understand why they did not.

It would have been nice to have the grain not removed the original color timing and theatrical dolby 5.1 EX  audio in the DTS HD MA container.

I have heard the blu ray audio is a nice approximation of the theatrical.

Would it have even been possible through seamless branching to have the theatrical and DVD cuts on blu ray?

I am of course talking about the phantom menace which is of course the only film in the prequel trilogy and not a video.

New 'X-Men' movie to be called ...

I want a reboot by someone who likes the classic X-Men and doesn't have a stupid hard-on for Wolverine.

You would have to do pre 90's X-men then.  Before Wolverine was on any X team.

The Mini series by Claremont And Miller were so popular i can see why he was added.

If you want Jack Kirby X-men then you need Ms Marvel, Iceman, Cyclops etc.

In their 1960's incarnation like the Kirby-esque first class comic and not the pathetic movie by the same name that had nothing to do with the Kirby era X-men.

Singer apparently still plans to do X-men 4 and 5.  Yeah like those will ever see the light of day.  Maybe more of a chance than his Man of Steel film with Brandon Routh, or his version of Battlestar Galactica.

Still i doubt they will ever happen.  Just like the Magneto spinoff never happened.

The Mono Mix Restoration Project (Released)
Time

Are not there limitations in a academy monaural track even if it is capped at the highest possible resolution and bitrate for sound.

Does not optical in general have limitations because the audio is on the print itself?

Nowadays if they wanted to they could reproduce the sound as exactly as heard in the recording studio off the first gen master.

Though Lucas has not done that.

The blu ray is a poor imitation of the original 77 mix in any of its forms.

Then again out of the few films from the 70's i want to own on blu ray like Superman, Star Wars, or star trek none of them have the original 6 track 70mm mix.
