Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**
Time

Since Joss Whedon and JJ are considered the new generations Lucas and Spielberg i can understand Abrams being selected as a director.  But no plot and no announced cast make me very wary at this point.

I mean none of the oot actors have seen a script and what if Mark Hamill says no i won't do it, if he is even supposed to be in it.  Remember when Sean Connery turned down the last indiana jones picture.

As far as i know Mark is pretty much retired as an actor.  And has even retired as the voice of the Joker.

He was Luke Skywalker for ten years and 20 years as the voice of Joker.

As for trek fans i can understand a bit of anger trek 09 was supposed to come out in 2008, and the huge wait for the sequel and JJ was not even committed to very late to star trek darkness and now can not be available for the third new film outing whether you call it star trek  3 or 13.  That and the proposed tv reboot for trek still has not happened.  They never even could come to a consensus if it would be animated or live action, and they probably nixed the idea as killing the golden goose.

Info Wanted: Trying to understand film preservation... perhaps a stupid question, but shouldn't digital masters be struck from theatrical prints?
Time

People complaining about Wizard of Oz have to be crazy.  A Beautiful 8k Scan from the ocn except for the black and white opening which was a duplicate neg the original was lost.

Beautiful technicolor restoration even better than the restore done on the adventures of Robin Hood.

Did not even notice that they did digital mucking about with the blu ray, looks about as close to the premiere print as possible on a blu ray.

Star Trek Into Darkness
Time

Did not the screenwriters say a couple of years ago this would be more dark like the Dark Knight, comparing the first film to Batman Begins as an origin story.

That made me as worried as the idea of a Dark Superman ripoff of the Batman Nolan movies.  Now i hope i am wrong about Man of Steel and Star Trek Into Darkness, but its a wait and see thing.

Hopefully the villain in the new trek film is not another Khan ripoff like Shinzon or Nero.  Or worse a Dark Clone of Kirk. Like a remake of Nemesis.

American Graffiti - Original Cut Restoration (Mechanical Assistance/Telecine Experts Needed!) (* unfinished project *) - lots of information...
Time

I wonder what the state of the actual original camera negatives for American Graffiti and THX 1138 are in.

I mean we know they took the star wars negative out in 93 or 94 and found out it had only about 60% of its original colors left or something like that.

Graffiti and THX were not effects heavy films.

So they probably did not have the problem of the bad color reversal stock.  But they were still made in the era that films were shot are now known to be at risk because of the bad Eastman Kodak stock.

I mean what did they send up to Lowry, i don't think it was the o-negs.  Maybe a generation later than that?

Not to derail the thread or anything but i wonder just how much grain is on o-negs, and how much color fade or if they are even in the Lucasfilm archives like Willow, Indiana jones and the 4 star wars films.

Or if they are in Universals and Warner's vault holdings.  I do know that USC has the negatives or at least dupe negs of Lucas student films and he only has copies at Skywalker since USC owns them.

Rick McCallum Exits Lucasfilm!

Well, my guess is that Disney didn't have use for him anymore, since they seem to be taking the new trilogy pretty seriously.

Also, wasn't the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles kind of a hit-and-miss project?

They were a flop and cancelled on tv.

The trailer with the John Williams music made people think it would be a serial adventure show, not a boring show on history.  I still find it funny that the show had decent acting, direction and guest stars who were good.  Unlike the prequels which were utter shit.

How can you have Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford, And Steven Spielberg, or John Williams, well you get young Indy another prequel with a younger version of a beloved character not as good as the original actor.

What would Darth Vader have been like as a ruler, if he had overthrown emperor palpatine and became the emperor/ruler of the galaxy himself??
Time

I don't know enough about the real Vader Canon backstory circa 1977-1983 to make that determination as to how Vader would have ruled.

I Do know he was a cool movie baddie ruined by Hayden Christensen, and that the Hayden version of Vader never could have kept the empire together, or even bested the Jedi.  Because he is a whiny wimp and not as tall as the real fictionalized Vader from the OOT with Dave Prowse in the suit.

Episode 3 kicked some serious ass!!!!!
                    kiss my

fixed :)

please list at least 10 reasons why U hate star wars episode 3-the revenge of the sith.........

1- It's shit
2- It's Crap
3- It's garbage
4- Hayden Christensen
5- It's still Crap
6- "Noooooooooooooooooooooo"
7- Did i say it's crap?
8- "lost the will to live" (as most people did when they watched it)
9- Hayden's acting, or lack of it
10 - Once again, it's crap

Best list ever! and i agree Hayden was in some ways actually worse than in Clones. He gets more and more sullen and tries too hard to show intense emotion but just comes off as awkward and wooden.  Its like George said Now i want you to do that darker and faster and more intense.

There were claims made that Christensen got acting lessons before ROTS filming which i cannot believe, and it was on McCallum's advice.  The Same McCallum who thankfully has left Lucasfilm and will have zero to do with the sequel trilogy.Best news i have heard since Rick Berman was fired from star trek.

When/Why did you become an OT purist?
Time

To me the Saga has always been from the adventures of Luke Skywalker and the films that came out in 1977-1983.  As well as the comic adaptations, the first two radio dramas.

To me the special editions are as much EU as the prequels and poor substitutes for the real thing.

Not so much a purist per se, since i have no problem with the prequels existing and the multiple versions of the original trilogy as long as the originals get restored to their proper place rather than treated as cast off garbage.

I can wish the special editions and prequels did not exist, but it is easier to recognize them not as Canon with the oot, or as a revised universe starting in like 1994 or so.

Do you think Grand Moff Tarkin survived the Death Star Explosion?
Time

Gee i hope not seeing as how Boba Fett could not stay until they killed him off permanently i hope this time.  And they brought back Darth Maul, and don't forgot the emperor's clones.

Honestly just like in star trek when they brought back Spock i thought it cheapened star trek II and Spock's sacrifice as the director did.

But since you cannot have star trek without Spock i make an exception in that case.

Boba Fett's initial revival did not really bother me for the sake of the comic books and EU as much as it did seeing him in star wars with a cgi Jabba.

Honestly only bringing Darth Maul back to life seems incredible stupid, as did making Boba Fett no longer a Mandalorian.  Making him be a kid and a stupid clone of the lame Jango fett guy who cannot act or do voiceover for Boba Fett in Empire Strikes Back well at all.

Not sure if that prequel-ism  is something i hate as much as seeing Yoda with a lightsaber in the prequels or clone wars, i cringe every time i see it.

The Empire Strikes Back is a "junk movie"
Time

I don't think Hayden is so great he is one the worst actors i have ever seen in sci fi or fantasy films, or genre films in  general.  No i did not see that Glass movie but he was awful in Awake and Jumper, and also Star Wars Episode II and III.

Maybe his range is limited and he would need a good script or director to make him tolerable and less emo and sullen.

Sure i was against Leo Decaprio as Anakin because i hated Titanic for dethroning star wars, but at least he can act.  Though Lucas has to be one of the worst directors of actors ever if the prequels were the only movies he made.

I mean Lucas had Christopher Lee, Ian Mcdiarmid and Terrence Stamp in the prequels and they all gave crap performances. Well below their range, Liam Neeson was tolerable  but also under directed.

I mean come on Chris Lee gives great performances in b movie schlock Horror films from Hammer, and also in 007 the man with the golden gun even if they were somewhat cheesy movies.  But the way he is used in the star wars prequels is almost criminal.

Help: looking for... Prequel Preservations...

I did get the lousy VCD bootleg of Episode I. It sucks. Oh well. I'm fine with what I do have. However, I am still very interested in obtaining Episode II. I've ventured into new territory for me by trying out a Newsgroup. Unfortunately, it appears that I'm unable to download either Episode II bootleg, I guess because they're so old...or maybe because I'm such a greenie at this sort of thing. Might someone let me know of an alternative or somehow enlighten my poor brain?

FYI, I'm working on a personal project of deleted and changed material. I'm making it with my Star Wars nerd siblings in mind (not as nerdy as I, but appreciative of my nerdiness). But I'm hoping to ultimately share it on the 'Spleen.

Does anyone actually still have non rotten copies or versions still readable on their PC?  Weren't there minor changes to Clones and Sith? but the only version from the DVD up till now of Phantom  Menace is the extended video cut created for the DVD and now blu ray with extra dvnr.

I do have the Phantom menace laserdisc and it has burnt in Japanese subs and is letterbox and non anamorphic.  Also Stuck in SD.  Not Blu ray quality, not even DVD quality. But it is the only official version of the theatrical i own except for the widescreen VHS tape. I don't have the first issue pan and scan the quality of that transfer was horrible.

Aren't game consoles notoriously finicky for DVD playback?

Not my Xbox 360 will play any dvd as long as it is region 1 or region free even plays region free pal discs.  The ps3 rejects the pal standard even if there is no region coding at least on the ps3 i have.

Both suck for not having MKV playback.  But that is another story.

What do you expect from the new Star Wars movie scheduled for a 2015 release?
Time

The least i expect of the movie is it does not suck, is not a 2 hour toy or video game commercial. Has character's the audience relates to and sympathize with as protagonists, like the original trio of Mark, Carrie and Harrison.  In fact they should get at least Mark Hamill to bridge the trilogies.

If its going to be a bad acting, bad script, cgi fest bore, like the prequels or kingdom of the crystal skull i would not blame any of the original cast for staying clear of that crap.

Anyhow i just cannot see them not messing it up one way or another as fans already have the dark empire comic and Zahn trilogy in their heads, so anything Lucasfilm/ Disney does will be seen as wrong.

Since when did ROTJ become less highly regarded than even Episodes II or III?
Time

Really? Most people i know think the prequels sucked and love Return of the Jedi.

I have met or talked to maybe one or two people who think Revenge of the Sith is on par with Empire strikes back but i disagree, they can like it all they want but its shit.

I can rewatch Jedi even if it is not as good as the first 2 films it still is a very fine movie nonetheless in  my opinion.  On the other hand i cannot watch five minutes of Hayden's atrocious acting.

American Graffiti - Original Cut Restoration (Mechanical Assistance/Telecine Experts Needed!) (* unfinished project *) - lots of information...

Pretty fantastic quality for a 16mm print of this vintage and for 50 dollars wow.

Wonder if that other print is the same dodgy adapted scope print listed years ago on the super8mm forums 16mm section.

I think it was sold for a far cheaper price perhaps the same chap never sold it or if he did the reseller wants what someone would not even pay for a pristine copy newly struck by the studio for home sale which we know would not be done.

Its really unfortunate the blu ray has the new 90's color timing and the cgi redone opening, because it is off the o-neg and is fantastic quality would be even better if it was scanned in better than just standard 1080 HD and they did less dvnr.

Of course the dvnr on graffiti is rather a light touch unlike THX and the movie was not completely ruined like THX.

But neither film looks like the techniscope original on blu ray.

Really wish Lucas himself had not really fallen in love with DVNR and Digital regrading of films like he had in the 90's and 2000's.  All of his films on blu ray don't look how they should.  CGI, dvnr, newly done inferior sound mixes.
