J.J. Abrams Will Direct, Now Who Will Score?
Time

People are allowed to be John Williams fans and hate the scores for Episode star wars prequels 1-3 and INDY IV.  I find them to be totally forgettable if not outright bore fests.

1-3 required some actual effort though, i thought INDY IV was phoned in.

Would be great if the films and the music charted new territory.  Bring in the star trek and lost guy.

I thought his score for trek 2009 was good enough on its own, he could do his own interpretation of Williams opening theme and compose the other music.

Making of Return of the Jedi (the book) Thread
Time

I am pissed that the book has been pushed back to October 2013 and won't come out in may 2013.  But the Empire book was also delayed.

Still i guess i should be happy the book is getting released at all because there is zero chance for a 30th anniversary blu ray for the actual film being discussed in Rinzler's book.  Not that bad 2011 abomination with NOOOOO and Hayden.

The Empire Strikes Back:

Teaser Trailer #2 [Vivaldi] (A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away)

Team_Negative1 did an amazing restoration of this trailer recently. I'd say that's the best source (sans watermark, of course).

Where is this restored trailer on the new blog?

Skyfall.  Worst of all the EON Bond films, and i have seen them all.

Takes Bond and makes it into a cheap thriller, but you know whats going to happen before it happens.

The Bond girls were a let down for me, No cool gadgets, and unlike casino royale and quantum no actual character arc or development for Bond.  They also made Craig Bond look old on his third mission.

I did like the Moneypenny bit at the End and also like q but he was under used.

After seeing this i think either 007 needs a reboot again or at least fire that Mendes guy and don't allow John Logan who wrote star trek nemesis near Bond again.

Info: Jaws - PCM mono track

To be fair to FUNimation I would only imagine that's what they received. Toei's not known for high-quality preservation efforts; the master tapes for all of DragonBall were thrown out, and the difference between the original broadcast audio and the home video releases is staggering. Not to mention the uncut version of the Fist of the North Star movie is completely lost!

No excuse for the SE Bond DVDs though.

The R2 Dragon Box has 448 kbps dual mono.  Still sounds like garbage though (especially compared to videotapes from 1989).

ETA, compare the UUE raw audio with the Orange Brick.  There's something else going on than "this is what Toei gave us".

Or you could get a mono mix retracked into stereo like Shoutfactory did for Transformers and not have the untouched original on the DVD.

Sure better than Rhino's new fake 5.1 but still.

Star Wars Spinoffs announced
Time

After they ruined the Character of Vader, Fett and Yoda in the prequels who but a prequel fan would see a spin off film with a cgi prequel Yoda, or Boba the Jango Fett  clone.

Honestly Yoda with a Lightsaber demeans the character he was at least for me in terms of empire strikes back, and Boba no longer being mysterious also ruined any appeal the character had.

Star Wars make-up artist (and designer of Yoda) Stuart Freeborn dies aged 98
Time

Its only a matter of time before everyone who worked on the oot are gone.

It is Return of the jedi's 30th anniversary year.  I think they waited far too long for these new movies.  Ralph Mcquarrie is also gone.

Even Joe Johnston is showing his age.  I saw him in an interview for Capt America and damn he looked like he aged massively since he did Jurassic 3.

Ghostbusters - Criterion PCM Track (see Jonno's post; plus lots more info) (Released)

I have heard its 35mm optical track, and if the PCM track is anything like that on either the Criterion or Columbia release, it's breathtakingly good.

I'd imagine and hope the 70mm was similar, just discrete.  I remember the original DVD having a nice 5.1 track, but the Blu-ray just doesn't feel the same.  And honestly, the 35mm presentation I heard blew that Blu-ray away.

I saw the original theatrical release in stereo Analog optical probably Dolby Processed and the blu ray and original DVD don't come close.

Star Wars Prequels 35mm 4K Filmized Editions by Emanswfan (a WIP)
Time

Maybe someday the theatrical Phantom Menace will be on blu ray without the bad DVNR, the only film out of the three.  The second two movies not films will never resolve more detail they will always look like bad early HD video.

Attack of the Clones and Sith along with Superman Returns have the same problems coming from the old HD video rig, they will always look soft and never look any better.  They actually were worse when printed back to film.  Making the DLP versions better.

Star Wars anime?
Time

Star Blazers exist on 16mm film prints and someone could scan that conceivably in HD for a blu ray release, Voyager Entertainment is likely not going to do so especially since they closed their doors in 2012 and are now under the care of the Japanese owners. Tim Eldred being no longer involved even in the capacity as web administrator.

We will not see a uncut Space Battleship Yamato original series in the USA, subtitled or newly English dubbed, or even the cut down versions.  We won't see the two cuts of the rebirth film, the live action film or the remake 2199.

Few industries in the USA have suffered as much a Anime has in the great recession.

Always a niche in the culture of the west despite vocal fans. How much has fansubs and illegal downloads hurt the industry, hard to say.

As for Lensman i don't think any EE Smith fans myself included have ever been able to ascertain if the animated tv series/movie was authorized by the smith estate or if the rights are owned by anyone in japan anymore.

The US Cut put together by Streamline pictures and pan and scanned while the japan version was widescreen.  Not sure if it was animated 4:3 and matted as a lot of animated films used to do.

A live action film had been proposed by Ron Howard but never went anywhere.  Considering how poorly received John Carter was maybe this is good, not sure.

What's the status of the Originals? (the theatrical cuts of the Original Trilogy)
Time

CatBus said:

If they released the OOT as a non-half-assed Blu-ray set, the sheer weight of all those VHS tapes hitting the landfill at once would knock the Earth off its axis.  So really they're doing us all a favor.

That is funny considering Lucas said the original vhs of the originals did not sell well at all and he compared it to E.T.'s sales.

Star Wars anime?

That little clip was made by the people who would form Studio Gainax.  Who also made Neon Genesis Evangelion.  Often referred to as the Yamato of the 90's.

Although the creator was a fan of Yamato i don't get the comparison.  Though last years remake of Yamato definitely feels like evangelion-esque, not something i care for.  And i like Both EVA And Yamato.

I like the old series which has never had a stateside release other than starblazers and apparently those subpar cut dvd's are now out of print as well.

While in japan the first season of the original series got a deluxe Blu ray set and the films are set to be released restored in HD on blu.

Which i am wary of because Bandai simply upscaled the galaxy express 999 films and used DVNR for the blu ray rather than going back and scanning the films, i hope they don't do the same with Yamato.  Even though i will be buying them without any english language subtitles, i will anyway since there is no chance whatsoever for an US release.

Last comic read

The complete Al Williamson Star Wars in black and white published by Russ Cochran.

Limited Edition signed by both Al Williamson and  Archie Goodwin both no longer with us.

I still feel Al's best work was done on Secret Agent Corrigan, almost comparable to Alex Raymond at his best on Rip Kirby.

I would like a reboot or Return of Indiana Jones to the comics.

If Dark Horse cannot do them justice let someone else have the license.

Kathleen Kennedy showing off her chops? Persuading JJ to do VII...
Time

I will try and not be too pessimistic and hope she does a good job, but she was involved in that Crystal Skull movie.

I still would like to find out why Ford and Spielberg went along with the Aliens thing other than because of some sort of friendship they feel to Lucas, or owing him in some way for their careers.

I too like to remember the magic Kersh brought into the mix on Empire but i also recall those post empire films Robocop II and Never Say Never Again.

Absolute drek.
