I knew they would drop the ball on the "official extended edition". Damn them I say, the great Frank Herbert deserves better, and so do the fans of dune.

I can only hope that Brian Herbert And Kevin J. Anderson along with the herbert estate can Make a " New" big screen version of dune close to frank's orginal without taken too many liberties. Special Effects have come a long enough way to do some of the scenes from the books back in the day that would have been too expensive.

Yes I can Remember when Dune was originally released and at the time it was lauded as one of the most expensive films ever made up until that point.

there have been many releases of akira on laserdisc.

1. original Japan Release
2. Japan special collection
3. French Pal
4. Original Criterion release
5. special edition criterion release.

these are the only ones listed on the laserdisc database, but are there others?

this preservation badly needs to be done as it was not even on the supplementals on the redux dvd. Word is that Warners own's the right to it and not coppola, and they could not agree on a fee agreement, so it is defintely never going to see the light of day. Even though it is one of the most requested of documentaries to be released on dvd at amazon.com.

Another reason to own a laserdisc player!

the region 2 japan dvd's put the disney ones to shame quality wise and on extras, and are usually released a hell of a lot earlier and with english dubs to boot. I have the 4 disc region 2 japan howl's moving castle which I bought in december not going to wait til march. Totoro widescreen with exras already out in japan not here til march, also whispers of the heart already out in japan and not here til in the u.sa. til march, pathetic.

Also i've read that disney has censored the soundtracks and or films of miyazaki, what is the truth to these rumors if any?

if any of this info is true then disney should be boycotted and scorned publicly, and I will only in the future purchase the japan releases.

by the way there is a 3 disc making of on mononoke in japan should check it out.

I am such a huge fan of ghibli I bought the final laserdisc release a box set of all their films up to 1995! Now I have all the ghibli stuff that was released on LD in japan including mononoke. Now I just need to find a copy of his pre ghibli works on laserdisc like castle of calgliostro a.k.a. lupin III the movie.

In japan they have all the ghibli shorts on dvd, the making ofs, and all of these dvd's have storyboards. They have the piece with John Lasseter never released here in the states, and of course the video of ghibli museum.

as for the french studio canal release of porco rosso it's quality has been much lauded over the disney release, i saw a copy go for a lot of money on ebay. Man I wish I won that item.

thanks for doing this project and preserving the oot. I can't believe the quality you guys are getting out of the X0 player a cut above the other players for transfers for sure. How much would an X0 player set someone back?

I be more interested in a new transfer of the japanese laserdisc of phantom menace, not like those poor asian ones. That of course would preserve the phenomonal sound mix on the laserdisc which is better than the dvd and less compressed. In the future all preservation efforts should be made from the uncompressed pcm audio of the laserdiscs. Of course the dvd picture quality is better, too bad theres no format that offers the best of both worlds. Thank god for fan edits and preservation.

I just got the french 1994 coffret collector set.

Does anyone know what the quality of this set is?

I know there supposedly letterbox with french subtitle in english and of course pal format.

Does anyone know of a laserdisc player that plays both the ntsc and pal standards that I could get at
a fair price and still get good quality watching in of my discs? thanks!

the voyager entertainment releases suck they are all mono soundtrack and none of them have the original scope ratio of the theatrical releases. Plus the dvd's pale in comparison to the japan region 2 ones which go for about a hundred bucks a piece. Audiowise laserdiscs will always make a better transfer, in fact the ultimate yamato collection is the laserdisc perfect collection box set of all the films remastered in dolby and some are widescreen.

why are japan dvd's always mastered better I mean even the japan Kurosawa Collection has better audio and video than the criterion here in the states, and most of there star wars laserdiscs beat the pants off the american ones.

I have purchased Akira Criterion and trying to get the akira special collection and pal boxset.

I have also purchased Final Yamato, and will be receiving Be Forever Yamato in the mail.

I have also purchased princess monoke, castle in the sky, porco rosso, and nausicaa of the valley of wind original japanese laserdiscs.

are you guys aware of the other star wars laserdiscs out there, the miscellaneous french german and spanish releases?

There is the 1993 Krieg der sterne trilogie silver screen collection, star wars, empire and jedi released individually and not as a set as i'm aware.

the french 1994 laserdisc letterbox pre-faces and pre- special edition I think it comes with from star wars to jedi.

( i have accuired this release but won't get it in the mail for a little while)

I think it's identical to the u.s. special letterbox set with hologram cover, but Funny enough in the u.s. it was not released on laserdisc. Maybe because the source material was released already as single double laserdisc releases, i.e. from the famous missframed japan releases.

The spain release is supposed to be of dubious quality but was'nt there something that set it apart from the rest like narration or something?

Thanks! ocpmovie for making a classic return of the jedi. This was my favorite as a kid so thumbs up on your version, hell in fact when i get this I'll show all three classic versions to my nephew instead of the tird 2004 release.

The shooting script had the scene with luke constucting his lightsaber, the jawa inn, and the sandstorm scene unfortunately I have been unable to unearth a copy of it from anywhere or even find out what draft it was second or third?

The Annotated screenplays gives very little info. The peecher book is great, and so is the novelization as well as the comics adaptation by al williamson.

I would also recommend getting a copy of art of return of the jedi pre special editions. Skywalking has little tidbits of info as well. and of course there are those classic bantha tracks, cinematographer, and cinefex articles. I know they've had little bits in previous issues of the star wars insider. There is the issue that has the lost cut as well as the sandstorm scene by dr. david west reynolds. Then there is the 15th ann. issue of jedi.

Oh yeah and the notes on the limited edition return of the jedi soundtrack as issued by rca victor in 1997 special edition. There are little bits of music from the deleted scenes of jedi, it's funny we have never seen the footage but the music exists. Lucas probalbly has the damn stuff in his little fort knox he calls the lucasfilm archives.

There is some info you can get on the jedi bendu script site as well as t bones star wars universe under jedi deleted scenes.
He also has links to several other sites of note.
And by the annotated screenplays that early draft of jedi is authenticated, the revised rough draft.

Yes the one with lando's death is a fake and the kenobi scene in that draft is lifted from the novelization, the

lightsaber crafting scene was probalbly taken from peecher's book.

Are there any other criterion anime releases that deserve consideration.

I have both the criterion ld and the metal limited edition dvd and the dvd has some of the same extras but not all of them.

I am trying to buy all of the original ld release of yamato anime films (better known here in the states as the starblazers feature films)
