Star Wars prequel Box set
Time
i don't think a box set is coming anytime soon considering lucas is still tinkering with his prequel films, and 2007 will see episode one in 3-d with the all digital yoda. 2008 attack of the clones, 2009 revenge of the sith. with lucas one a year policy that means his super duper special editions 3-d version of the older trilogy will be 2010 a new hope, 2011 empire strikes back, and 2012 return of the jedi.

he still has yet to decide on the new format war but I bet because of 20th century fox it will be blu-ray

and also because he had been the main force behind pioneering the digital film revolution and dlp technology.

i'm pretty sure they'll still be a dvd six box set though, if not it will be skipped and jump to the blu ray player, but since he likes to go to the well as many times as people will buy them, i think he will squeeze all the cash he can out of us. My advice is you already own them don't bother buying them again unless he releases the oot in anamorphic widescreen with 5.1 and digital restoration, and all the old documentaries and deleted scenes.

"Troy" Re-Cut (Released)
Time
this is the worst adaptation of the illiad I have ever seen. It had a much smaller budget but hallmark entertainment's helen of troy mini series for t.v. was more faithful to the homeric material.

If there was a way to recut it as the Homeric Cut i wish someone would do it that way. this movie was an overlyladen special effects farce, better than alexander by a mile but still not homer.

Brad Pitt as achilles please, he lacks the depth of emotion and rage of the character. His interpretation is a cardboard cutout two dimensional greek rambo, brainless mindless killer.

the odyssey would make for a grand movie adventure epic if they got the material right.

they would have to film it as two films starting with a real version of the illiad, then In the second part show how he trys to get home.

Preserving the "German" Original Trilogy (Released)
Time
there were three german releases not released in a set but individualy. They were widescreen and were labeled as silver screen collection. Don't know the quality of the master used. According to some site I read somewhere can't remember where. probalbly internet movie database , they use the same master as the 1994 french release and earlier french pal releases, which is been told to me are crap because the used an ntsc source and transfered it to pal. The 1995 widescreen German Faces releases are probalbly the best version of the original trilogy in german, they never got the definitive collection in germany, france or the u.k. Oddly enough though most of europe got the ISD Executor box set taken from the same source as the laserdisc in lower quality obviously.

two of the more rare sets are the french coffret collector from 1994 (I own this one)

and of course the krieg der sterne trilogie silver screen collection. someone was selling all three on ebay as a one shot deal too bad i'm broke because I really wanted this set.

Remember when everyone hated Return of the Jedi?
Time
I never hated jedi in fact I loved and still love it as my favorite of the trilogy. Even though empire and jedi are both considered better made films, I still think marquand did a very good job with what he was given.

Plus I think some of you guys out there take star wars way too seriously, I mean lucas meant the films to be fun and entertaining but they are not religious writ, or philosopher's discurtions on life. after all they were made as kids movies, saturday afternoon serials. Maybe a lot of you out there have grown up since you saw them and some of the stuff no longer fits. There is a lot more sci-fi/ fantasy out there that is written for adults and even caters to the more cerebral adult mind, just don't expect to find it in star wars.

That being said I do know that Jedi is a barely desguised re-make of the first star wars just like last crusade was a remake of raiders.

Are you gonna buy 'em?
Time
I will be buying them because I don't own a widescreen t.v., or HDTV so I can deal with the fact that they are only letterboxed. In the event that someday I might have bought one though it would've been nice to have them anamorphic. The 2004 set displays well on mt t.v. even though is a 4:3 screen, because my rca dvd player alows me to set it to letterbox 4:3 cropping the image, I know I lose some of the image on the sides but I cannot afford a HDTV even at the cost of 1,500 dollars.

Besides the fact that these were the versions, (the definitive collection) that I had hoped would come to dvd since it's advent.

that being said I do not understand lynn hale refering to the original negative being altered in such a way that we can never have the original orginals again in HD format or even a theatrical re-release because they have been destroyed. I have a horror of an image of good old georgie standing over a trim bin cutting the original negative and throwing away those scenes he thought was not his vision.

I suppose he can't stand the fact that the first two star wars films the original versions were slated by the government as to be preserved, and that they are the versions AFI nominated on it's list of top 150 films.

They claim they can't afford the funds to retore them?, cannot or will not?

Then how come I was at theforce.net the other day and saw that he put a lot of money into cutting together a 3D version of phantom menace for release in 2007, a.k.a. the new cgi yoda version as seen on revenge of the sith's second disc. In fact I have a sneaky suppition that we will see special editions of the prequels before we know it, and uber HD versions of the 2004 cgi crappy versions with new tinkering.

Dare I say it it appears now that he apparently was the luckiest one trick pony ever with his success of star wars, will continue to tinker with his films.

Of course in his college years and during the original star wars trilogy it appeared he was a genius of design and editing, but that has been superceded by computer graphics and shoddy storytelling.

I can sum up the release of the original versions in one word bittersweet, I wanted to shout for joy at the annoucement but was also livid with anger over the treatment of the most beloved films of my childhood by Lucas. and his shitting all over them publicly and not offering them in an anamorphic 16:9 remastered form.

Modern Myths?
Time
the only modern stories I can think of that reach the status of epic mythology:

The star wars trilogy films

lord of the rings books, and the silmarlilion and hobbit by tolkien

the star trek series

the stories of neil gaiman

and of course most of the sci fi/fantasy books that are out there.

heck there is even mythology in shows like alias, lost and buffy the vampire slayer as well as smallville.

The Official Lucasfilm Response
Time
the reason we are getting a substandard release of the oot is because it will make the newer ones look better.

I think he's kind of scared, because If they restored the oot to the same quality of the 2004 release minus the mistakes no one in the world would prefer the special editions version, except maybe the kiddies who grew up with the special editions and prequels, but if you show the same kids the older version I don't think they would notice any difference because the storytelling takes over not the effects.

the effects were there to supplement the storytelling.

in lucas own words from in star wars to jedi " Special effects are just a tool, a means for telling a story. a special effect without a story are pretty boring thing".

looks like he forgot his own speech there with the special editions and prequels.

Comics Fans
Time
speaking of comics fans, what are all your opinions on any or all of the upcoming comic films.

like:

X-3: the last stand

superman returns

I'm really looking forward to these 2 movies and I hope they totally don't suck.

Hopefully superman returns will return to the donner style and not be like that lester crap, I totally wish he had made 2 and 3.

and on X-3 i don't know how much involvement claremont had on it, so i'm keeping my finger's crossed.

David Hayter now known to many as the voice of solid snake wrote the screenplay for X-2 but not the last stand, and of course the director from the first 2 awesome x men films was not involved.

I was totally digging some of the stuff in the trailer though it brought me back to the days of reading not only the chris claremont version of x-men comics, but also my favorite jim Lee which the cartoon was based on, and I saw stuff in the trailer that reminded me of the dark phoenix mini series on that cartoon.

does anybody here appreciate the early days of the comics before there were comics books?

I love all the prince valiant stuff by foster, and The original "real" flash gordon drawn by Alex Raymond, and All of the e.c. comics stuff, the early superman and batman etc.

Even going back to some of the dime novels and the pulps, stylelistically I wonder how much an influence the writings of edgar rice burroughs had on the comics, because his stories are like comics without pictures. Especially his often imitated John carter series of books with which we probalbly would have never had flash gordon or star wars, or even the lensman books by e.e. smith.

I've been hearing stuff about a daredevil sequel, a second sin city movie, a wolverine movie among other things coming to the silver screen. Marvel also definetely said we will see ghost rider, the hulk 2, and hinted at a few suprises to come, probalbably they were talking about spider man 3. Of course the rival studios will not be far behind with hellboy 2, and batman continues.

It Scares Me, Mommy!
Time
no they are there all right. The clean up job by Lowry Digital just made them stick out more like a sore thumb, I can't believe they could spend time and money revising the effects for the special edition and not digitallly correct or remove them. That is what I and a lot of people think the special editions should have been, not crappy cgi that ruins the original story to fit with the shoddy prequels.

I simply cannot believe that Lucasfilm rushed this release and gave Lowry like only three months lead time, when they had about a year on indiana jones trilogy. Plus the color correction is plain horrible, and the sound mix on a new hope is so badly screwed up that I hope Ben Burtt had nothing to do with it and their deliberate creative decision.

I hope that if they ever plan on releasing them theatrical again, or putting them on a high def format they restore them painstakingly frame by frame, and screw all this automatic restore crap.

and on top of that it is just a joke that they could'nt pay mark hamill and harrison ford a liitle bit of money so they would be on the commentary track. I like ben burtt and all but he has way too much on there.
