Lucasfilm Exiting Movie Business?
Time
all this means is the new star wars ventures are for television duh!

Plus he has always wanted an alternative to the studio system, now he'll be able to be his own release company as well as production company.

Red Tails and Indy 4 being his last hollywood films, maybe. Unless he decides to change his mind about episodes 7-9, which is highly doubtful.

as for him donating money to usc film school that is nothing new it's his place to pick up the next generation of lucas employees, as it always has been, as well as some of the other universities where his friends went.

POLL: Who Leaked the XØ Timecode to the public?
Time
You have no right to make malicious comments against rikter who has here been a friend of many on these boards including me, and he has actually contributed to fan projects something you have not, your to busy being a troll.

indirectly calling the X-0 team gay is a good way to get yourself banned especially since one of the mods of this site is an X-0 project guy.

Nice nowing you.

I will no longer feed the troll by responding this is my only reply, I hope you continue to be stupid and get your ass banned so you can be childish elsewhere.

Lensman - dvd preservation proposal (* unfinished project - lots of info *)
Time
quote :"There was a TV series? Dang."

answer: yes there was in japan the movie was edited together out of the episodes.

It was released in the west dubbed in english.

The film has more in common with star wars than e.e. doc smith's lensman series though.

The best book being in my opinion Gray Lensman/ or grey lensman, and if you can afford the fifties fantasy press edition that is the best edition.

The film by the way is sort of an amalgamtion of galactic patrol and gray lensman.

The Trekkies Are Unbelievable
Time
I for one appreciate the restoration efforts they have undertaken.

The picture on the new cgi versions is better than it has ever looked and the effects very much match the original work without all the dirt from the optical comps/ effects that back then you had a picture that was 3rd generation on the opticals versus the shot footage of the actors which was first generation.

Unlike lucas paramount never saved the opticals so they could not re-composit them with digital computer technology they way they did the star wars special editions.

The new computer effects are similar in nature to the director's edition shots done for robert wise's star trek I, that they look like something that could've been achieved the time the shows were made.

I am very surprised they did not update the effects because Enterprise happened before kirk and co and looks more futureristic.

First Impressions of the OOT ...
Time
"Lowry is a person, Lowry Digital is a company " quote from boris

LOWRY DIGITAL IMAGES is now DTS DIGITAL IMAGES he sold the company to them.

There latest effort is astounding taking two years to digital restore from the original negative and film vault elements all twenty James bond Movies.

I would like to see Lowry's original fix of the star wars movies not after Lucas took them out of their hands and did bizarre color correction.

He did only give them three months to do it also. I don't fault them, the work they did on THX 1138 and indiana jones trilogy as well as king kong is simply awesome. Also there restorations of Gone with the wind, snow white and the seven dwarfs, the wizard of Oz and some charlie chaplin pictures is all great.

another quote from boris "Well, that's not really true. The quality is much better, has less ghosting, and is sharper with better colour" are you accusing me of being a liar I own the laserdiscs and the dvds and I have said point blank that this release is shit, so have other people with knowledge in the film industry. But they all wrong according to your twisted point of view, you are starting to sound like a troll or worse yet a mole Lucas has planted here.

First Impressions of the OOT ...
Time
these dvd's of the oot are the most underwhelming release I have ever seen.

The quality is shit not much better than the definitive collection laserdiscs, and those have the uncompressed full pcm sound.

Moth3r's transfer of the pal laserdiscs from 1995 are better by far.

It's funny to think a product released by lucasfilm in 2006 is not that much better than the asian bootlegs produced years ago. I have seen fan versions from these boards which either match the quality of the official release or beat them soundly in picture and sound quality.

Lucas should be severely criticized by the professional film community for this turd of a release, nothing short of a disgrace and a slap in the face to film fan's everywhere. But especially the true fans of the oot who made him rich beyond the dreams of avarice.

I bought my copies to review them, but I shall urge all true fans to not buy it. and in fact this release is so bad it makes you wish people had not caved and bought them because it should have been boycotted.

Also the 2004 release coupled with this of a new hope still has not been fixed, the sound problems are still there. Plus they still did not bother to fix the color correction and the garbage mattes around starships etc on all thee films.

any plans here for the 30th anniversary?
Time
my plans are as follows:

will not be seeing the phantom menace in 3-D

will not be re-newing my hyperspace membership or insider ( I don't want to be around to watch them ruin another beloved franchise rip indiana jones )

Will not be buying the 30th anniversary box , not one more penny for george until he respects the fans who made him a success and the oot given a proper release.

by the way celebration IV will be another joke just like the other ones because lucas will not allow screenings of the original versions of the films. Plus youll get to see lots of yes men mcallum and sansweet take center stage to talk about how wonderfull he is.

I used to have a lot of respect for mr. sanweet until he decided to become another ass kisser and yes man over the september release of the oot.

Why does'nt this no talent hack stop squeezing every last bit out of this franchise and actually make some new films? because he knows he can rely on sheeple fanboys to keep lining up and filling his coffers.

September Release BestBuy Canada Exclusive...
Time
best buy exclusive like this are rather limited stock usually are they not?

and after they are no longer available in stores or in their online sites they fetch a fine price on ebay.

But 90.00 bucks is friggin ridiculous price gouging. Sure that's about the same price Champagne is selling his boxes on ebay for but they are nicer in my opinion, being 30.00 dollars.

The five disc Indiana Jones set was nearly impossible to find in widescreen they put that disc in a lot of the fullscreen sets though.

I have the limited edition best buy King Kong Box with the metal tin I got off of ebay and it was expensive as I recall. so this is nothing new.

In fact the tin has the special editions with the originals.too bad they don't just have one with those because I'd definetely be buying.

I guess it's mr. lucas rule that they have to be bundled together, a stupir rule imho.

and the starwars.com set has something nobody else has the han and greedo bookendnwhere han shoots first supposedly.

So, this is how the DVDs are going to look...
Time
the one thing you guys seem to forget is if you start out with a crappy source all you'll end up with in the end is a tird. I have the definitive collection laserdisc set, which looks like shit but it's the best you can get on a ntsc laserdisc player. The oot trilogy dvd is also going to look like shit because It's using the same source. The same digital laserdisc master they passed over using as a medium for restoration to put the films back in theaters, that is why they restored the negatives for the special edition.

So if they thought the source was shit for theaters and for any future home video release why are they using it for the new dvd release? All they need to do is find the selected takes on film and restore them for the dvd for the scenes that were not restored for the special edition. were talking about 10 to 20% of the footage not having to do a whole new remaster. They could take the time do the color correction right and actually give a restoration company ample time to do so, not a 3 month rush to cash in.

for those of you morons who claim anamorphic is not the orginal version it was shot anamorphically in panavision and cinemascope at 2:35:1 ratio and released on 35mm and 70mm prints. idiots

And yes there are theatrical film prints that exist in private collections vaults and film archives the world over, that may be dirty but have significant better picture than these dvd will, and with a little clean Up they would've been a better source. The original negatives the interpositives and especially that dye transfer print for star wars in george's collection should've been used for this release, for not giving these films proper treatment is beyond the pale of the norm it's pure idiocy from a self styled master of film preservation. original vision my ass, he can take his special edition's and prequels and shove them.

Hey boris you must think you know more about this issue than Richard Harris does the way you go on supporting Pucas blatant attempt to LUca$h in

He will not even let conventions screen the original versions of the films, If I ever got rich I'd buy my own prints of the films and screen them in my home I love them that much. What's that George? you'd send your stormtrooper nazi yes men gestapo to my door to prevent me from reliving my favorite films Of my childhood if I could get my hands on them.

The Artistic Vision (TM Luca$hFilm)
Time
He did try to get the rights to flash gordon.

some other little known facts:

both spielberg and lucas at one time considered shooting lord of the rings, george even wanted to do the hobbit hence willow. There is dialogue between luke and obi wan in the third draft script that was lifted from the hobbit.

according to kurtz at one point the film so clearly mirrored the film hidden fortress by kurosawa they were actually going to buy the rights to do the remake with all japanese actor's for star wars.

Lucas had to edit out dialogue and references to several franchises namely the works of one edgar rice burroughs because lucas liberally borrowed from both tarzan and john carter of mars, he was going to be sued by edgar rice burroughs inc. or at least owe them money for the copyrights use.

The dune references though shortened are still there and he was going to be sued by herbert or at least herbert considered it before his death.

Plus the E.E. "doc" smith lensman material and the asimov books had to be somehow less allluded to.

His first story treatment for the film was taken from his friend donald richie's synopsis of hidden fortress from the films of akira kurosawa by the same author.

Go to the site starwarsorigins and you'll see the sci fi books lucas stole the concept for lightsaber's from.

He stole the concept for the galactic empire from a whole slew of asimov novels namely the foundation trilogy, from which there is a planet korrel and it's inhabitant's are korrelians. he stole the capitol planet trantor from those novels and it emerged later as corusscant. he stole photon torpedoes and tractor beams from star trek all though in star wars he called them proton torpedoes .

The jedi knights are an amalgamation of the holy order of the knights templar, the lensman of the galactic patrol, feudal period samurai as well as ronin.

The biggest impact on Han Solo would be the films of John Ford namely the ones in which John Wayne starred.

The Kiber crystal was a very badly disguised numinous object, etc the one ring of power from lord of the rings.

"dictators tend to wipe out their opposition and take control of the armed forces -- but the memoirs of the Caesars this is not." it's supposed to be a refrence to machiavelli's the prince and Sun-tzu's the art of war.

The mystical poet always said keep your friends close and your enemies closer, as well as the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Michiaveli said something like the ends justify the means, a very lucas like philosophy as well as that of the sith lords.

Further more this is a reference to rome they killed caesar julius to have a democracy and then they god ahead and reconstitute the empire and set his adopted son really his nephew up as imperator Caesar Augustus was really Octavius or Octavian, and augustus is where we get the term august body and so on in politics.

Dare I say it, the emperor was based on Nixon when lucas first wrote star wars, as the liberals perceived a very orwellian type double speaker and such as well as being based on a wizard of Oz type concept always being the dude pulling the strings behind the curtain. No woner he was first called COS DASHIT and was also based on Hitler according to the screenplay he had a "wicked moustache".

several Lucas source books for star wars: the christian bible (he had like a cliffnotes version when he was writing the screenplays) The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, the republic by Plato , 1984 by orwell and brave new world by Aldous Huxley. The hero with a thousand faces and the 4 books masks of god series, the flight of the wild gander and the inner reaches of outer space by joseph Campbell. Sun-tzu , art of war in english translation.machiavelli's the prince

Being revised in the late 90's it's no wonder and after september 11th 2001 that lucas found his political footing for the new trilogy in the "new" bush adminatration. Lucas called Valorum as reference to Bill Clinton.

Is it an accident that Both Palpatine and George Bush used a situation of crisis to grab more power for the executive branch of a government?

In star wars it's the seperatists in real life it's bin ladin and al quiada.

for those of you who go in for that type of star wars vs. star trek thing think of this little known tidbit, lucas in college days at Usc (probalbly as a graduate student) was a fan of the original star trek his favorite episode was the corbomite maneuver. also consider that if not for the success of star trek tos star wars probalbly never would've gotten made. Yes star wars ironically lead to star trek being made into a popular film franchise whose effects were done by none other than ILM for most of the films, whose effects artists were huge fans of science fiction and star trek.

Awesome possible Star Wars news! Star Wars on the Wii
Time
speaking of new star wars games i'm definetely looking forward to lego star wars II. Still no word on Kotor III it had better happen as the second game ended on a cliffhanger like halo 2. The xbox 360 would probalbly be the best bet for it considering lucas has screwed over the playstation in the past.

My brother wants to buy an Xbox 360 and a Wii for the new halo and zelda games for those systems as well as fable II.

I'm more looking forward to Final Fantasy XII for the PS2, Final fantrasy XIII for the ps3 and metal gear 4 for the ps3, as well as grand theft auto 4.

and speaking of video games I cannot believe lucas was actually allowed to write two games the new next generation star wars game and the new indiana jones game. Just like he should not be allowed to write or direct the new indy film. ( then again episodes 1-3 were like very bad game cutscenes with very bad acting and dialogue like most cgi games.)

Spielberg been allowed to write games before the finest case being the screenplay and plot for the first medal of honor game for the ps1, uncredited I might add.

In my opinion one of the best classic lucasarts games was for the nes called maniac mansion. Plus star wars and empire strikes back they never got to do jedi for the nes.

Star Trek gets better treatment than Star Wars...
Time
brannon braga no longer has anything to do with star trek, he actually helped get enterprise cancelled to get out of his contract so he could do the new galactica. As much as I like the new galactica damn him to hell for ruining enterprise, Garfield-stevens team took over but sadly not soon enough.

He has absolutely no respect for roddenberry's vision and legacy.

As for berman he was fired by viacom for the failure of both nemesis and enterprise.

The new star trek movie is under new management hence the removal of the rick berman story and berman's idea to have meyer direct it, this was going to be the first war between earth and romulas set sometime in the future after enterprise.

Now they want the young days of spock and kirk and for J.J. Abrams to write it and possibly direct it.

That being said I am strongly apposed to them doing anything to the original star trek, leave the special effects alone for god's sake they were good for the time and have a lot to do with the flavor of that show. They could track down the elements and study up on how they were originally done to restore them but beyond that is stupid.

I mean it's supposed to look 60's what's next replacing the cardboard sets with cgi ones the cheap warbrobe with cgi, the fake looking monsters and aliens and even william shatner's acting and sideburns?

How about they instead release the original version of city on the edge of forever with the music uncut.

as for a trek revival
People from the earlier days of trek could be brought in to help out in various creative ways. Leonard Nimoy or William Shatner, Judith and Garfield reeves-stevens. How about involving majel barret and her son.

And by the way i can tell the difference between a film shot in tradiotional methods from a digital cgi shot, and filmed models look less fake. I hate this digital world we live in now where all the movies look too fake with crappy cgi, and shot on digital video. Any cinematographer worth his salt knows motion picture film is better than digital video.

If this is the future then I say "Fight the future" . I'm starting to see a partern with the de-evolution of science fiction and movies and it's good old georgie's fault and is the downside to the success of star wars.

You don't believe me then read star wars on trial, it's got some good arguments for and against star wars. I tended to agree with stover but david brin made some brilliant points.
