Who should the villain(s) of the sequel trilogy be? (if the sequel trilogy has villains)
Time

Hopefully not the ghost of Hayden as the villain.

But seriously i don't know.  What if Luke is the bad guy, but that would be totally unoriginal like Dark Empire.  And be too derivative of how Kasdan wanted Jedi to end.

Seriously watching Hamill cackle like Palpatine would be like a live action Joker.

Not something we want i would imagine though it might be entertaining for a second or two.

Scientific and logical explanation of some Star Wars scenes
Time

Yeah but Obi Wan and Owen being brothers was in one of Kasdan's drafts, Not sure if it was a Lucas idea, a Kasdan idea.

I always assumed it came out of the story conference like what originally happened to Leia's real mom.  But since i have no access to the entire story conference transcript i cannot be sure 100%.

We also know that in the production of each of the original trilogy films Lucas was making things up as he went and could change things as he went along.

Though for some reason the mythology of it being a whole cohesive saga planned out from the beginning persisted until the prequels shot that belief to hell.

Unless you are someone who finds an excuse to believe otherwise, i mean if you believe the tragedy of Darth Vader stuff and the six film saga.

Did they really need Carbon freezing scene in ESB?

Just curious, Sky....how do you interpret the "I know" line? Funny, wistful, or...???? :-/

He is trying to be a pain in the ass even though he knows he may very well die here on Cloud City. I find it totally flippant and at the same time equally true to Han Solo's character as well as Harrison Ford.

First time i saw the movie i thought the line was funny and unscripted.

I honestly thought it was something that Lucas missed.

Though now i know Han is almost similarly flippant earlier in the movie but that most of those takes never made the finished cut. I mean in the ice corridor on Hoth.

Star Wars prequels were mapped out in 1981, only nothing like the way they turned out

Also, Palpatine wasn't a Sith.

But he was a user of the dark side, at least as far back as Empire strikes Back. Vader bows to him and calls him master.  He was at that point no longer an out of touch sovereign being used by his lackeys like the Emperor in Dune or a fraud politician hiding behind smoke and mirrors like an Evil OZ.

In the original concept you could be a force user and not be a Jedi, or a user of the dark side and not be a Sith Lord. One of Lucas confusing ideas around Return of the Jedi.

I saw Part 2 yesterday.  Overall I enjoyed it, although a few action bits went on too long (as is PJ's usual mode of operation).  The barrel chase was particularly ridiculous.

The Barrel riding scene seemed primarily created for 3D its a nonsensical scene but it has them dodging arrows or something.  Cannot completely remember exactly.  Its like the overdone effect they did in the other films of Legolas arrow  with Camera zoom but now for 3D.

Is it true Kasdan was irritated when they changed the line from "just remember that cause I'll be back"  To " I Know" ?

Its also an interesting change because the original kind of implies he will live and be in a third film.  "I know" is more like you know he might die in Carbonite, or never be unfrozen if Ford does not return or is difficult.

Do you think Disney will release the unaltered versions for DVD and blue ray?

So does anyone think this won't happen?

I mean, we've been fucked-over so many times over the years that I still don't know what to expect from the Disney acquisition of LFL.

I haven't seen anything good come from Disney's purchase yet, so I'm not sold on this being a sure thing. And even if it happens, I doubt it will be handled with as much care as Harmy's Despecialized Editions. Are we even sure an unaltered print still exists in the LFL archives?

They have to at least still have separation masters.  IP's, In's etc.

You don't not have these for a multi million and possibly multi billion dollar franchise.  Especially when Lucas apparently has saved every thing.  The only thing totally lost and not  recoverable or at least not in very good condition is the original effects work.  They recomped the stuff that was lost and that is not original only the pieces of film are.

The live action stuff could be taken directly off the negative if its not totally gone by now, with no generation loss.  However having to resort to the IP or prints for the original effects would not exactly match up well with the negative.

What do you HATE about the EU?
Time

I used to some what ignore them but the prequel-isms in the books post 1999. I read Survivor's Quest again recently.  Its not a terribly good effort on Zahn's part to begin with, but the prequelisms which i must have missed last read through, i now really despise.

The wost part that Yoda taught Luke that Jedi were forbidden to love during his training on Dabobah.  Nowhere in the movie.  Zahn trying to harmonize the non canon sequel Eu storyline with the prequel film, its rubbish.

All Things Star Trek
Time

I watched Star Trek VI the other day and the humanity of the characters shined through as if they could be real people.

In fact i think its the last good star trek movie and that was in 1991.

The JJ Abrams mess is so bad even though i have seen both films i cannot bother to rewatch them and they were like watching someone else play a videogame.

The only character even remotely on par with the classic film series was Captain Pike played by Bruce Greenwood.

The blu ray is not so good a source for reconstruction Lucas removed the original intended techniscope film grain with dvnr.

The same was done to American Graffiti.

What source do you suggest? I know it has been de-noised/grained, but atleast the outcome should be better than the angrysun version's quality.

Sadly you are right, or you have to revert to a laserdisc capture method.  Or wait for a print of the film to surface one of the Scope prints.  Re-released after star wars release not the hacked version.

Flat prints and reductions have come out on ebay and elsewhere but not a full scope print.

Amongst the DVNR and totally retimed color which shots are still in their original form and not tweaked with CGI or digital editing?  I mean the blu ray of course.

Did THX 1138 George Lucas cgi cut get a Digital intermediate 2k or was it just 1080P like star wars?

George made a picture book
Time

But he donated the proceeds to charity as far as i remember for those who got the limited signed version.

People act like Lucas a guy who was once worth approx 6 billion dollars needed the money from this book.  Yeah sure, lol.

The idea probably came from the George  Lucas selects that hyperspace used to have.

He would select a frame from the movies as he shot them i think Episode II and III and then the frames were posted.

The death of Anakin Solo.  Invalidated Chewie's sacrifice

The death of Jacen Solo and the whole prequel retread Darth Caedus thing.

The death of Mara Jade Skywalker at Jacen Solo's hands.

I admit i kind of like Kotor II not as good as part one but i hated that it introduced that every Sith has to have a double bladed lightsaber like Maul, whom Lucas stole the idea from Veitch or Anderson cannot remember whose idea it was for Exar-Kun to have a double bladed weapon but it was not red.

Surprised the reprints and digital version did not have it recolored to red.

Transformers: The Movie (1986 animated version) (a WIP)
Time

Wish i could locate a print or even cels cut from one to know what the original color looked like.  Every version on video just looks toyed with to me.  Especially the ones done in the era of digital tools.

Have not seen the blu ray so i cannot speak for it but every version either seems to be blown out in terms of color or too much dvnr.

The SONY DVD is overly bright. on both Widescreen and 4:3.

The UK ultimate edition had better balance i think but was probably the same master just color corrected.

To me the worst is that the original concept had Leia's mother going to Alderaan with her and dying years later when Leia is still very young.

So the line in Return of the Jedi makes sense about her remembering her real mother.

Finally when episode III actually was shot  she dies of a broken heart.  There is no way that Leia can remember her mother from birth unless somehow Lucas magically says its the case.

Info: Star Trek HD Caps
Time

I would be interested in seeing what the color timing is on the HDTV release of Star Trek II.

The blu ray is restored from the negative.

Are there screenshots of the color of the uniforms Kirk and his crew wear?

In the blu ray some shots are almost orange or brown like the source the negative was faded.

While some of the earlier home video versions had the film overly red with the colors blown out but the uniforms were red.
