Star Wars Laserdisc Preservations. See 1st Post for Updates.
Time

To me it would be a real Miracle is someone made JSC for ROTJ watchable.

Don't know if its how it was filmed but every single home release i have seen looked overly soft.

The 2011 special edition makes the unaltered scenes look sharper than any other version but i have wondered was is sharpened artificially in computers?

I always hated that Enterprise had the Borg.  Now that they are somehow in the TOS timeline does not surprise me.

One to many times back to the Borg.  I sort of forgave it in First Contact because i loved the movie.  But by the time they were resurrected in voyager i came to the conclusion it  was just another lazy trope.  Never mind Enterprise and the new TNG relaunch novels.

And yet again off topic sorry FINK.

What Special Edition changes (if any) did people like?

I know people will see me as some sort of heretic but i always thought the matte lines should not be on the blu ray.

You can do oodles of other digital crap but leave the lightsaber's incorrectly colored and the matte lines.

I though it was great that Adywan showed all you needed was a home computer and some off the shelf software to remove those garbage mattes.  Multi Billion Dollar Lucasfilms could not afford it,lol.

What are you INDIFFERENT to in the EU?
Time

They are certainly better than all the novels that came later but they are still fanfiction even if officially licensed and published fanfiction.

I mean its like good fanfic versus rotten fanfic that is just printed solely to make money.

Zahn only had the first 3 films to work from in their original forms except for star wars which had been retitled episode IV a new hope.

He had the VHS tapes that came out in the 1980's to work from.  Probably in full screen.

Goldeneye was considered a soft reboot.  The Second reboot would be Craig as Bond.  Third time who knows.

Barbara Broccoli considered Goldeneye a reboot because there was a six year hiatus and it was Bond in the post cold war with a female M.

That last 2 respective reboots were handled by Martin Campbell.

The series was either dead or in stasis after the critical failure of License to Kill.  It nearly killed the series.  But it was the legal battles over Bond that really prevented a third outing for Timothy Dalton.

But no more stories will be told in the old EU prime universe.  Its gone and replaced with whatever Disney is replacing it with much like replacing the real star trek with the JJ version.

http://www.thetrekcollective.com/p/2014-star-trek-publication-schedule.html

Tell that to a majority of the Star Trek EU.

Other than one new lost era novel i see no other TOS star trek novels or comics.  And it is still true that they don't make any more tv shows or movies in either the tos prime universe or next gen timeline.

Most of the fan focus is on the JJ Star Trek comics i hate and loathe them will never accept them.  Although i might have been interested in an adaptation of Into Darkness in comic book form.  I liked the one for 2009 enough i suppose.

No news but i also assume Dawn of the Jedi is gone as well.

I suspect any ongoing comic series will be cancelled. After all, has any comic company immediately picked up a series that another company began and continued it where they left off?

While its a rare thing it happens.  IDW and Simon Furman picked up and continued the continuity of the Marvel Transformers comics.

Which pretty much pretend the series never was cancelled and generation 2 never happened.

I do wonder though about Disney Lucasfilm.  Will they have a new EU spun off from the movies.  Or avoid such a distinction altogether and have the new marvel comics and rebels in the same continuity as the sequel trilogy.

While they work on the next film where do you think the franchise is headed and where do you think it should go?

I am not too sure myself the last film was not epically great but made more Money simply because at its core it wasn't really Bond.

The director and screenwriters wanted to tell a different story using the framework of the 007 film series but it could have been any other filmed post 911 thriller.

That is not that i want comic book or over the top Bond.  Though i do enjoy Bond when it is fun but not a self parody like Die Another Day.

I do enjoy Bond as flawed, human and basically a thug.  But i do feel like there have been some major missteps after the mostly excellent Casino Royale.

And with Craig stuck for 2 more films i am dreading that either the franchise dies or more likely gets rebooted for the third time since Goldeneye.

With a  New actor and who knows where they can take the character that feels fresh and modern and involves some risk.

I'll be so happy if Marvel destroys Legacy!!!!!!

So glad you got your wish that Legacy II is cancelled as well as Brian Wood's star wars line?

No news but i also assume Dawn of the Jedi is gone as well.

To make way for Marvel shit.  The x-men comics have been absolute shit since Disney took over. They still got some great artists, but the writing is crap.

I expect star wars comics that are not overly violent, are safe and kiddy and in no way dynamic.  The Marvels have stayed violent but i see Disney sees star wars as a kiddie line.  Look at Rebels its very kiddie.

Info: Recommended Editions of Disney Animated (and Partially Animated) Features
Time

I do believe with almost 100% certainty that there is a Derann full feature print of the little mermaid.

The big 90's hits as well were on super 8.  Up to at least least fantasia 2000.

Not sure if any other were made after that point.

I hate grain removal on animated film as well. The worst case i have ever seen is Disney/ Buena Vista butchering of The Castle of Cagliostro. And its in 1080i.  Horrible. Certainly better than the DVD or Laserdisc not really up to showcase level blu ray quality. Best release i have ever seen in terms of being left untouched is Nausicaa of the valley of the Wind.

Too bad the bad reviews it got based on grain led them to dvnr the other catalog titles afterwards.

Would love to have Kiki's Delivery Service and Totoro DVNR free.  Sadly the film grain haters won't allow that.  These cases were not dial set to 10 dvnr but i prefer dvnr free BD.

Usually i find most new films and the BD identical for some reason the colors on the BD of Ponyo for instance were more muted than the 35mm giving the print an edge over the BD.

Funny how later SITH became both a race and a religion.  Again continuity in the EU changes so fast and so many times i not even sure if that is true anymore.

Seems like more than Zahn had a similar line of thought.

Not sure if Kevin Anderson/Veitch came up with it or if they had talked to Zahn and came to think the concept worth revisiting.

The Jedi being  celibate monk's came from the rough draft screenplay from 1974.  People don't have to like it but it was not created in 2000 or whenever Lucas started episode II.

Yeah its based on like a single throwaway line when Anakin Starkiller gets in trouble for having sex with some girl in a closet but its there.

In fact i don't have a hard time believing a lot of the prequel ideas came from already jettisoned stuff from those first prototype scripts.

The overly boring politics stuff. The stuff about a queen etc. The Kiber Crystal  reminds me of  midi clorians.  Its a way to quantify the force.  Kurtz suggested Lucas abandon it.

Your DVD Collection

People still buy DVD's?

I have a laserdisc collection never really got too far into DVD's and now blu ray came along.

Blu rays seem perfect yet i own so few.  More than content to rent most films for a single viewing in HD.

Would have thought laser rot was impossible on factory pressed DVD's but my Superman DVD from 2001 almost no longer plays.

Its a flipper disc.

But that is later.  In the 1990's the terms were used as if they were the same thing.  or as if Licensing did not allow the use of the term Sith.

Darth Vader was already known as the dark lord of the sith and in Zahn he is referred to as a dark jedi, that is frankly stupid.

Not that i am in any way suggesting they go back and retcon stuff for continuities sake like making Luke a Sith in Dark Empire, or changing the reborn emperors name to Sidious, or redoing tales of the jedi so that Exar Kun's saber is the same colors as Maul's.

Well to be fair when Lucas allowed publishing to go forward in 1991 not only did he not have any intention of making the prequels at the time nothing was even written not even rough form til nov 1 1994 for episode 1.

And if Lucas had no clue of how the story would happen, there is no way even if they wanted to that they could clue Zahn into something that was entirely static and changing up til May of 2005.

Obvious things Zahn wanted were nixed the Noghgri being the Sith race.  Obi Wan's insane  clone.  Heck he even used Dark Jedi  confused as to what Sith meant.

Darth Vader had always been known as a Sith l but for some reason when they did the publishing line in the 90's everyone was a dark jedi all of a sudden.  Even the emperor, dark luke skywalker etc.  Either the term was off limits or they were confused over its application.

To me one of the dumbest things Lucas came up with was that all Sith had to have Darth in their name.  Palpatine suddenly had another name Darth Sidious.  He could have been a sith Master or acolyte of the darkside without Darth in his name.

That is only because even though there is interest on the part of the fans seeing a Matrix Resurrection does not mean the filmakers have any intention of making it.

And its been so long that the general public would probably be like Matrix what?

Even the Hobbit films are not making the same mark that the lotr trilogy did.

They may eventually make as much or more but the novelty is gone.

Can Episode VII ignore the prequels?
Time

The one thing the Sequel trilogy is going to do and will have fans up in arms.  Is that everything which started with Heir to the Empire is now gone.  The EU has been effectively rebooted or erased.

Not exactly the thing EU fans thought they were getting.  They maybe imagined wrongly that the Zahn trilogy would be loosely followed by the new scripts.

Lucas has always maintained that the EU never happened or was a separate universe.  Was something that came out of licensing and was just really a source of revenue. Remember Lucas was financing his own films he was not a multi- billion dollar studio like Disney.

He never intended to make them after 2005 the sequel films i mean.  He intended the story to always be the tragedy of darth vader. Wonder what Retcon is coming to undue that the Empire is dead and its only six films.  Where is this new story going to come from.  Probably whole cloth and whether or not its accepted is anyone's guess.

They may as well have Tarkin come on screen and say " the last vestiges of the Old EU have been swept away."

It will be like JJ Trek where Enterprise happened but not the original series the movies or the next gen.  Only the 2011 star wars prequel and special edition will be the continuity the sequels follow.  The oot or pre sequel EU never happened.

That must mean that the new star wars comic series is cancelled as well right along with all post Jedi stories by Del Rey.

Have zero interest in  Disney's rebels or their own comics.  They cancelled the EU and its the only thing that kept star wars alive for twenty something years unless the prequels is a high point for you, for me it was not.

That is not to say the Del Rey stuff has been great its really been shit since LOTF and FOTJ, still the Disney deal really kills any future Zahn books that might have featured Mara.

Well she no longer exists in the Disney continuity.  Doubt they will let the Zahn trilogy go out of print and try and erase if from history like Lucas did the oot.

But no more stories will be told in the old EU prime universe.  Its gone and replaced with whatever Disney is replacing it with much like replacing the real star trek with the JJ version.

I'll be furious if legacy series II is cancelled.  Just when i have started to begin to enjoy it.  It belongs to a continuity set after Return of the Jedi that is part of the Zahn post rotj EU.

The Dark Horse comics continuity going away Is just more proof that the EU as we knew it which began with Heir to the Empire is basically gone.

Which kept me a fan of star wars post return of the jedi.  No fan of Lucas prequels though the EU prior to 1999 made me at least in a mind set to give them a chance  even if the outcome was not too good.

The only EU i wish was no longer canon or erased is the prequels not the Zahn trilogy, or Dark Empire, NJO, legacy etc.

The New Disney continuity is going to break up and put at odds an already fractured fan base.  The oot saga fans VS special editions vs prequel saga fans is going to be added on to Disney VII-IX saga fans.

Star Wars Prequels 35mm 4K Filmized Editions by Emanswfan (a WIP)
Time

Was really surprised spike TV's version of Phantom Menace had more film grain.  Though not really much resolvable detail.  The grain was almost like noise like someone put the film through an early 2000's dvnr filter.  Still zoomed in and not o.a.r.  But damn the fact that the blu ray had less grain and was even more blurry than a low quality 1080i interlaced broadcast is simply unbelievable.

Not sure how your version will correct this.

No discernible edge in quality for II and III BD vs broadcast.  The broadcast still has the right original colors while the blu rays was changed.

Still the most glaring issue is how soft II and III look, how video like and how badly done it is and how cheap it all looks.
