i don't want to sound like an asshole but is this just vaporware?

kinda like some people have accused the X-0 project of being, i am not one of them as i see that as a tremendous effort and love of the oot.

i distinctly remember riktors old thread for it, like a couple years ago or something.

i hope it comes out.

a film print came up on ebay once for the abc tv cut extended version i did not buy it, for 200.00 bucks and full screen or foolscreen.

the footage has to exist in some vault somewhere in widescreen.

for those in the know the best pcm of the original theatrical stereo mix is the japan widescreen laserdisc which was the last pressing of supes on laserdisc.

the us one is good too, just not as good.

then their is the hard to find two disc expanded soundtrack by John Williams and the original LP record.

Peter Jackson evidently IS returning for The Hobbit...sort of...
Time
the problem is the hobbit really in many ways is a children's book and not entirely the same a lotr, it came to resemble it more in its constant revision and references to the elder days from what would become the silmarillion, the vast backcloth of tolkien's mythology starting as early as 1915 and also during the first world war.

of course their is elrond, a couple brief mentions of gondolin, the elven king of mirkwood not named until the lotr as thranduil.

the necromancer (sauron of course) who they did not know was growing again in power in his fortress of dol guldor in mirkwood before the rebuilding of the dark tower in mordor.

but the elves are entirely too childish and unlike the elves of lotr are very merry folk who laugh and joke and are jolly.

plus their are the authorial interuptions in the book the asides to readers which ultimately came out of tolkien's reading to his children.

later he would call talking down to children a mistake and though it is their in the early drafts of lotr the finished product became much more terrible and adult like.

according to the new history of the hobbit books tolkien had the intent to almost rewrite the entire hobbit and not just the riddles in the dark chapter V, he did some preliminary revised notes but never carries them through. he was also going to rewrite the silmarillion to fit the lord of the rings, he wanted a consistency between all the works parts as he saw all three works as part of the whole.

he never did finish the silmarillion or write the hobbit more in line with the lotr.

and even though they were not published chronologically it was his hope that the silmarillion be read first, the the hobbit and finally the lord of the rings, this is also christopher tolkien's approach to the material.

my favorite parts of the hobbit are the references to norse myth, the philological stuff like the riddles in the dark obviously taken from old english book of riddles. as well as the references to beowulf and the hrolf saga like beorn the were bear or skin changer.

don't forget about journeyman being axed by nbc, and bionic woman may be next, as well as sci fi canning flash gordon, and the utter failure of tin man and battlestar galactica being cancelled just after 4 seasons. flash was supposed to fill that time slot looks like they may have to come up with something else or its more fake wrestling.

jericho is being cancelled for a second time and this is probably the final curtain.

The Golden Compass
Time
new line was trying to get something else to fit the place of where the hobbit should have been released if not for the years of fighting.

looks like 2010 and 2011 and 2 hobbit films produced by p.j. and fran and phillipa boyens. p.j. at the moment is not the director.

they would be insane not to have him onboard, now that they have ian mckellen and howard shore and andy serkis all but confirmed working on the movie.

a for these atheist movies which were reportedly toned down i will not see them for the ignorant bashing of my christian faith by phillip pullmen.

i have no problems with the works of c.s. lewis and tolkien because they were devout christians. harry potter i have some problems with, but at least rowling is a new age spiritualist not an atheist. the same way i can view the beliefs of george lucas with a grain of salt because he is a new age type as well. it can still watch and enjoy the star wars films because it was not set up as a huge f.u. and middle finger to christians like pullman.

i dislike that very much but it is not outright attacks on christianity like the piece of shit davinci code.

Beowulf
Time
sorry to say it but tolkien would be outraged were he alive to see the film treatments of both his lord of the rings and beowulf. fake cgi and utter crap.

neil gaiman and robert z could not follow the poem and decided to hollywooddoodle a classic of english literature to make it into something trite read tolkiens monsters and the critics. had he written that today if he was still alive he would addess the hollywood people who make films that are bastardizations of the awesome poem.

Lord of the Rings - FOTR - The Book-Cut (Released)
Time
i always wanted to see these edits please go ahead with your new version of the book cut of fellowship of the ring.

by the way the detail in the HD rips out there is amazing way better than the dvd. hopefully someday on blu ray and hd-dvd, one can hope.

that is if peter jackson gets his royalties from new line on their profit sharing agreement until that happens no new releases are forthcoming.

Info Wanted: 1984 VHS Hi-Fi Sound – A better source for the ’77 stereo mix?
Time
the theatrical mix was analogue to begin with star wars had no digital mix til 1985 and back then they had no digital playback equipment or very little. they had released return of the jedi under the thx program in 1983 with digital sound but how many theaters got that probably 5 if even.

unless you have access to the lucas master tapes in his private little skywalker ranch vaults the best you will ever get of the stereo mix is the analogue laserdisc. by the way this was only on the cav release. the clv did not run a proper speed or was sped up to fit the running time and laserdisc.

the clv and cav releases that have the stereo mix all suffer from laser rot problems so a pristine copy is hard to come by.

quote" I didn't know that the '77 Dolby Stereo mix ever made it to VHS. Interesting."

i did only once as on the rental only 20th century fox release which thestarkiller preserved on dvd.

the re-releases all were the later 1985 digital remix.

not sure but i think the non rental from 1984 may also have the theatrical mix.

so without any further proof i think the 84 release is the one you want and not the 1985.

The Dark Knight (Batman Begins Returns Again)
Time
so was katie holmes really fired as chris nolan says or she turned it down as her publicity people said?

the have that character in this film with a different actress.

people hate tom cruise and tomkat so much they were distracted by her being in the last film.

i have heard of proposed fan edits where they completely remove her from the film batman begins.

Help: looking for... 1997 SE TB Digital Broadcasts
Time
the laserdisc release in the usa and japan was a 5.1 mix you needed a rf out and the equipment to get it i think.

the uk obviously never got anything beyond stereo releases as far as i remember 2.0 dolby.

you'd have to ask moth3r he is the uk laserdisc go to guy for star wars.

as much as i disparage the 1997 and the 2004 i own them and the 2006 gout, so i'm guilty as charged. lol.

i got my gkar set through a trade with rikter. not sure if he still has them on his hard disc or can copy them for people who ask nicely. and postage and shipping or whatnot, as the rules of the site apply.

the best ntsc release was the 2000 japan boxset with the behind the scenes of episode II clip. too bad they have hard subs. i only own the us release, i do have a pretty incomplete star wars laserdisc collection.

the 1997 vhs tapes and laserdiscs came from a digital source which was obviously transfered to analogue. tape or laserdisc with digital sound. the digital video broadcasts were carried on both analogue and digital stations in europe and the netherlands . the digital one is what people obviously want. supposedly canal plus did a broadcast in france that was all in english included the titles and subs this is the TB release. the german broadcast was in german subs and in english. which is weird since each country got their own repective dub for the special editions as well as the originals.

now we get to the other subject aspect ratio the laserdiscs and widescreen vhs are letterbox. not sure if the dvb broadcasts were 2:35:1 anamorhpic or 4:3 letterbox . the set i have of gkar is anamorphic i think but i might have been stretched to anamorphic by the dvd creator, unless the person could be contacted to see whether or not it was oar. oh shit i just remembered that the gkar is slighly cropped might be 1:78:1 or some shit.

the gkar has a sharper picture than any laserdisc sourced dvd being pal and not ntsc but it plays back at pal speed so unless you enjoy pal speedup it is crap. plus their is some blockiness in the image in some areas from compression, maybe. i obviously cannot say whether it is in the raw capped broadcast or not.

Star Wars Vault or the Making of Star Wars?
Time
nooooooooooo! raiders at least deserves it's own making book.

they are going to squeeze the making of four movies into like 500 pages or something and give a minimalist take on it great, just great.

hey at least del rey is reprinting the indiana jones trilogy as an omnibus edition for those who never got to own the books they have been out of print and hard to find unless you use ebay and abebooks and shell out a lot of money or get shitty dog eared reading copies.

as for the novelization of indiana jones IV i could not give a rats ass about that. i willl decide whether or not i will go see the film when i actually get a hold of the script and read it.

i hope the revised making of empire strikes back and return of the jedi are not thrown together in a single book they deserve their own release.

gkar editions are pal and not nstc so are the TB ones i believe.

most people who have the TB have errors when they copy them.

the only person i know of who supposedly has unaffected copies is selling them, quite illegal and against these forums rules so i will not mention his name.

if only who created the TB set could be found, possibly they have the raws or the unaffected copies.

the only other options are the bad quality asian bootlegs which are no longer available for the 1997 versions or dark jedi and boba fetas set sourced from the laserdiscs.

dj also did pan and scan versions from the vhs tapes.

does lucas have hidef copies of the 1997 special edition probably, will he ever release them. not a chance!

who cares anyway these are the hated special editions anyway and not the oot.

What happened to the live-action show?
Time
i heard the live action show may be pushed back to 2010 and not come out in 2009 as planned. the clone wars cg is coming out in 2008 as far as Lucas has planned 2008 will also be the year of force unleashed, and a little thing called indiana jones 4 and the merchandising and tie in as expected will come out.

hasbro may i have heard be doing indiana jones action figures, and their is a lego indiana jones game in development.

for the next 2 or 3 years lucasfilm has no plans on their calendar as they have said to release any versions of star wars on blu ray or hd-dvd (unlikely anyway because 2oth century fox is a blu ray supporter), you can thank the greed of sony, microsoft, and paramount among others for that. thank bill gates. it would not surprise me if lucas is in cahoots with him to get both formats crushed in favor of online digital distribution.
