Peter Jackson evidently IS returning for The Hobbit...sort of...
Time
speaking of beowulf the best english translation if you cannot read the old english aka anglo saxon is seamus heaney's translation, unless of course tolkiens ever does get released doubtful.

the only annoyance i have with this translation is the different metres used in the poem itself and the un authentic ulster dialect addings of heaney.

donaldson's is the best in terms of faithfullness to the old english text.

as for tolkien's works i have come to enjoy and embrace the silmarillion as tolkien's master work, not the lord of the rings critics be damned.

when i refer to the silmarillion of course i mean the intended unfinished work by tolkien and not the hodpodge published by his son in 1977, though that was edited to be in line and consistancy with the hobbit and the lord of the rings.

the best stories are the tale of beren and luthien, probably my faveorite and the longer version remains unpublished. Also the children of hurin, of tuor and the fall of gondolin.

in terms of shear delight in poetry and mythic sensibilties and fairy tales the book of lost tales 1 and 2 have things that are lacking in the later drafts that came to be the silmarallion. though these books have an extreme archaic language and are pretty much a pastiche of many mythologies among other things like william morris inspired in part, as well as the finnish kalevala, norse mythology and the grimms's fairy tales. we all know tolkien hated french yet the earliest version of beren and luthien has luthien as a rapunzel like character, a story which is french.

I'll give Episode One something...
Time
i was watching a bit of episode 1 recently when my brother borrowed and watched my dvd, yes sadly id do have the prequels in my collection and have only watched episode 1 and 2 once on dvd, never even bothered finish watching revenge of the sith on dvd.

the jar jar stuff poop and fart jokes and racist character are extremely annoying and stick out like a sore thumb. the dialogue is so horribly written in in all three prequel films and natalies performance so bad and cardboard that i feel sorry for her because she actually is a terrific actress.

what was george on when he made these movies, they make the plots and dialogues of the oot seem like shakepeare in comparison. the magic is gone i don't particularly care for any of the characters. hayden's whiny bitch emo thing is retarded, the jedi come off as inept, polticians are equally retarded and democracy does not work we are supposed to believe the mother of luke and Leia would fall for such a douchebag murdererer of younglings and psyhcopath , and the strong leader she was in episode 1 where leia supposedly got all she was from ends up barefoot and pregnant in the third episode and dies of a broken heart, LOL. assinine.

How much longer will the format war last?
Time
bill gates and microsoft killed HD dvd by not backing toshiba, all bill would have had to do was have had the xbox 360 gaming systems games on HD-DVD disc.

bill gates wants online downloading of movies in HD via xbox live yeah those low quality encodes in 720 p are just as good as 1080 p, yeah right.

i would not been all that suprised if in a year or two the 360 comes out in an upgraded version whose games are on blu ray, like sony.

having dvd games that have to be split up on four or five discs is rediculous when they can fit on a single disc.

there are rumors that final fantasy XIII which comes out in christmas 2008 is so massive it will take three dual layer blu ray discs to play on the ps3.

Complete Superman scores
Time
yeah too bad it is a film score monthy exclusive and will not be available in stores and will be a scarce limited edition.

they should re-release the expanded score for superman I by john williams in stores so the people on ebay getting 80 bucks for the remastered 2 disc set will be shit out of luck.

the only superman score i care for is the first one. it originally went for 25.00 dollars or something. i bid on it once on ebay sealed for 55.00 bucks or something equally reficulous and the final selling price to someone else for more than sixty dollars.

it does not say that on aicn whether or not you have to be a member of film score monthy magazine and its online site to buy it. i imagine that is the case like when they had the temple of doom exclusive us cd release.

Peter Jackson evidently IS returning for The Hobbit...sort of...
Time
new line and sael zaentz failed to pay the 8% royalties to the tolkien estate, christopher tolkien who has made it no secret all along the hatred he has for peter jackson's butchering of his father's master work and the estates non involvement in the films will now go to court to return all the book rights to the tolkien estate and void the sale of said motion picture rights and others that were originally sold to zaentz by j.r.r. himself before his death.

i also believe that money may be a factor christopher tolkien obviously in hindsight sees the sale of these rights by his late father as regrettable, as well as lack of control over following the books to the letter.

this would also include the selling of j.r.r.'s manuscripts to marquette university and oxford which are valued in the millions possibly priceless, that tolkien sold for tax purposes and christopher had on loan or as zerox copied to write the history of middle earth series, the silmarillion, unfinished tales and the children of hurin, he may see the sale of them regrettable but they have been wonderfully preserved for generations by these university libraries. materials mostly unseen and unread by the general public as for the tolkien estates imposed recrictions on viewing, note talking or even photocopies or microfilm. it was because of the tolkien estate and christopher tolkien and manches and co lawfirm that the beowulf manuscript translations in verse and prose with notes by micheal drout remain unpublished, as well as keeping a lot of tolkiens poems and philological work out of print with no intention to reprint or make available in electronic form or as order on demand book reprints therefore driving used book prices into absurd figures for university texts and such.

there is also a feud between christopher tolkien and his first born son from his previous marriage simon tolkien, over the films. simon sees the work of peter jackson as wonderful and an added aspect of his grandfathers legacy.

christophers second son adam tolkien simon's half brother, they have diffrent mothers obviously, follows his father in thinking the work of jackson a butcher job.

tolkien was a christian and therefore i think a guy directing the hobbit films like the director of pans labyrinthe which made via allegory communism and socialism good is the wrong man for the job. maybe he should have directed the phillip pullman atheist series that seems more his speed.

peter jackson and co all but took out the christian values and synthesis that was lord of the rings in the adaptation to the screen, this to me as a christian and a fan of tolkien and lewis as christian writers amongst the inklings, a grevious mistake.

this was as stupid as the hoolywoodoodling of a classic english epic poem like beowulf another work that is a pagan and christian synthesis and tolkien was its best teacher and reader. that dumbass director who did the back to the future movies is a joke for thinking he could write better, and hiring a new age spiritualist and alleged atheist like the comics writer neil gaiman and removing the christian element absoulute stupidity to the nth degree.

grendel's mother in beowulf was supposed to be a hideous troll orgress off the moors who ripps people literally limb from limb not some whore in the form of angelina jolie.

Live-Action Akira Confirmed Already for 2009!
Time
this movie has epic fail written all over it and is an obvious hollywood cash in.

like the people who are trying to make evangelion or ghost in the shell into live action movies, i say as an anime purist boycott them. they will only take out the asian culture and backgrounds and re-write them as american with bad american actors.

i hope that the stalled starblazers movie for instance never gets off the ground.

in the immortal words of the prequel trilogy vader when first hearing of an akira movie "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"

i think the neon genesis evangelion films would have been mildly interesting with weta workshop being the studio making them with adv and peter jackson directing. but they seem to be dead in the water as much as the peter jackson halo movie.

Indiana Jones IV
Time
the part where indy swings on his whip looks like fake cgi in fact a lot of the trailer looks like fake cgi prequels style, i have a very bad feeling about this.

most of the stuff in the trailer looks like it was shot via blue screen or green screen in the same leavesden ex rolls royce factory and looks fake.

the original indy was about contructing massive sets, and shooting on location and doing everything real and gritty including the stunts, keeping a kind of b movie serial esque type appeal while still looking stylish for a film that was shot on the cheap in yesterdays dollars.

eisner disbelieved that raiders could be made for the 30 million plus it cost to make.

spielberg has had lots of flops and crap movies in a row and i believe thinks of himself in terms of godhood aka george lucas, so this movie will suck. he thought that piece of trash live action cgi jerk off movie transformers was a good movie so he had some sap studio greenlight transformers 2. a movie need only make money because stupid americans will go and see it it does not have to have a good story or realistic special effects.

war of the worlds is one of the biggest flops in history for spielberg its no 1941 but it certianly was no shindler's list or saving private ryan, neither was it one of his good popcorn flicks like jp, raiders, e.t., or even in the same category as close encounters or jaws.

munich is also a crap film, but so is amistad. the critics unfairly rated a.i and minority report i think those were the last good spielberg films, not the best really but at least tolerable and somewhat entertaining.

jp 2 was also ludicrous and stupid, thankfully he resently gave the jp 4 directing duties to the same guy who produced the crap part 3.

hopefully his lincoln biopic starring liam neeson as honest abe will not be full of the fiction and lies propagated by the lefties and retard liberals in resent years like abe lincoln was gay, or an atheist, a rascist etc.

(SPOILER) new "STAR TREK" 2009 spoiler thread (SPOILER)
Time
i am furious that due to conflicts with jj's new season of lost, and reportedly a sequel to the turd that is cloverfield, star trek 11 has been pushed back from christmas to may 2009.

the only possible good thing i can see coming out of this is it will give them time to find william shatner a part in the movie if his ego and money grabbing are checked at the door.

is it possible that the delays on this movie among other movies out there being pushed back has anything to do with the ended writer's strike?

i mean it pushed back narnia 2 and pretty much made the next temrinator movies cancelled and has had brian singer walk off of superman the man of steel, and led to the demise of the justice league movie.

supposedly the new james bond quantum of solace and indiana jone IV crystal skulls come out on schedule.

RELEASED: "Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Special Longer Version)"
Time
i too also would like to know where to get them.

the theatrical cut of twok for instance in HD.

HDnet had some of them as one point but you need to be a member.

are we going to get the 8 mm digest version of the motion picture as an extra feature on your project fanfiltration?

the disussion of trading and optaining HD versions of films capped off off HDTV that are not on blu ray or HD dvd are not to belong on these forums as i understand so i will apologize for my above post, lol.

still other than the trek movies and star wars id also kill for raiders of the lost ark in HD.

speaking of star trek and the wrath of khan i wish i could find those deleted scenes from the visual presskit in good quality where spock tells kirk that kirstie allies character saavik is half romulan. and has an alternate ending to the movie.

does anyone have the audiobook read along for the motion picture or the wrath of khan that were released on casette and record?

i believe that it was either trek III or IV that was the first simon and shuster audiobook abridgement.

Bond 22: Quantum of Solace
Time
no shit thanks to baird nemesis almost killed the star trek franchise, and its failure lead to the cancellation of enterprise and firing of rick berman and now renewal of his contract as producer.

the future of the franchise hinges on the j.j. abrams movie if it fails it will be jj's fault no big screen or small screen trek will ever happen again, the last nail in the coffin.

not to mention long time fans of the next generation trek were pissed that their favorite heroes went out with a whimper instead of a bang.

plus beyond being a trek film nemesis fails to stand alone and work as a movie the movie just does not work, it is one of the worst pieces of shit films ever, but what do you expect from berman and co, look at how they killed kirk.

Help: looking for... 1997 SE TB Digital Broadcasts
Time
yes the us laserdisc of the 1997 special edition has the ac3 5.1 mix.

the uk release only got a 2.0 since the uk did not have ac3 laserdiscs from what i've been told.

of course the japan release and the us release have the ac3 5.1 ntsc.

the last release being in japan in 2000 with burned in subtitles in the lower black bar area for the letterboxing.

this was missing the making of but added a behind the scenes look at episode II.

I only own the 1997 us set and do not have the ac3 equipment so it comes out of my tv downmixed into stereo.

i believe i read someplace that the g'kar pal set 5.1 was an upmix of the uk pal stereo mix? possibly taken from tv broadcast sources.

i probably should say european audio release since the g'kar was form germany right?

The TB set has a higher bitrate but i only own the g'kar since nobody i know has a set without crc errors. i've been able to circumvent this in the past on some of my burnt dvd fan discs in my collection with dvdfab dycrypter, but since i do not own the TB set i cannot try it out, LOL.

Heath Ledger dead at 28
Time
heath ledger was an actor, these people have to remember brokeback mountain was fiction.

he wanted to do it to prove his range as an actor, he was definetely not gay in real life, he had a wife until he was divorced, and a daughter.

whether his split and being away from his child had anything to do with the sleep pill overdose we will probably never know.

not all christians are like this, after all heath was a human being and the bible says we are all created in god's image, he had a family and was someones child once.

we have no idea what his relationship with god was and i will not speculate. god is the judge of our actions in the life anyone who tries to judge heath shall also be judged by their own deeds.

i have to ask christians who live in condemnation if they are even saved individuals, there is now no condemnation in christ jesus.

they should live in a spirit of thankfulness and grace, that if what the lords blood was shed for and to do away with sin.

the state of hetero marriage was in trouble long before gay rights became a hot button issue in the u.s.a. people should spend their time teaching their children and being better husbands and wives than wasting their time on this.

Wanted: HD Jurassic Park - for an edit...
Time
jurassic park was released on laserdisc in dts sound.

link to

http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/9306/43115/Jurassic-Park-(1993)

not sure if the dts on the japan superbit is the same as on the laserdisc.

sometimes dvd's get new dts mixes when their were theatrical dts mixes examples such as tomorrow never dies and goldeneye.

i know the japan dvd supposedly is full bitrate dts how they fit that on dvd is beyond me since they only have 8.5 gb.

i believe years ago circuit city and other stores had the laserdisc as a showcase title in stores to sell dts to its customers. i remember it sounded amazing, but i could not afford the then couple thousand dollars worth of audio equipment.

it was also released on laserdisc in thx sound in both dolby digital and dts flavors under the lucasfilm thx laserdisc program. i know jurassic park was universal but since lucas is spielbergs friend a lot of his films were released under the thx laserdisc banner.

who knows when jurassic park will hit blu ray or HD-dvd. i'm hoping blu ray with the theatrical dolby in full bitrate pcm, probably wishful thinking since universal supports HD-DVD right?

and in response to goodmusician all the dvd releases of jurassic park, at least in north america leave a lot to be desired. too bad the japan superbit is near impossible to find and sold out everywhere fetching 90.00 plus on ebay.

i tried to find a copy for myself being a fan of the novel more than the movie, though i liked the first movie and was dissapointed with the sequel novel and expecially the film which deviated completely from the novel. never mind the third movie which has no novel basis and not directed by spielberg and re-using john williams music from the first 2 movies directed by joe johnston had fail written all over it. for the love of god i hope 4 never happens.

lets face it joe johnston was a brilliant visual designer/illustrator/storyboard artist on the star wars trilogy circa 1977-1983 but sucks as a director. jumanji anyone?, indian in the cupboard was okay but the concept was childish and frankly silly, miniature darth vader toy comes to life, lol, was the best part.

i wish a expanded cd release had been released for jp 1 but at least i have my 1 disc cd. the music is the best part of jp the movie it is truly great.

God Bless The USA
Time
it is truly sad that young people in america today probably do not even know what world war II was fought over or what true nazis were. today it is only a bad word little kids and dumb youth under thirty equate with authoritarian or fascist rule, completely watered down from its original meaning as a slang world bereft of its original and horrific meaning.

i don't see bush having jewish folk and christians killed and put into ovens the last time i checked or gas chambers.

Is George Lucas a fan of Star Wars?
Time
i don't blame george lucas for having a love and hate relationship with star wars, it did cost him his marriage after all.

the success of star wars has pretty much trapped him into doing star wars forever and no other projects.

kind of how roddenberry was trapped into being the creator of star trek,

or no matter how much j.r.r. tolkien contributed to philology he is only remembered for the lord of the rings.

even Joseph Campbell was trapped by fans who wanted him to continue to write hero with a thousand faces type books while he wanted to write about other things.

so as much as actors get typecast to a particular genre or character they play writers of books and directors and writers of movies do also.

Could even a good Fan Editor save "Galactica 1980"?
Time
tiptup the original galactica and galactica 1980 are complete seperate entities. the original was galactica 1978.

they lost dirk benedict and richard hatch as well as apogee and john dykstra when they not only cut the budget down to nothing but they changed the time slot.

the new galactica rips off just about every idea hatch had for the rebirth he was going to shoot and direct before larson and universal pulled the plug.

a great unfinished concept in the books and comics hatch worked on.

apparently to have a role on the new show and being payed for the commentary on the 1978 boxed set meant he could never show the trailer he made for his movie ever.

70 mm print of the Empire Strikes Back Differences
Time
i know their is a super8 digest version of raiders. it is fairly rare though only appearing on ebay once.

so far i have yet to see the digest versions of star trek tmp or superman 1978 preserved either.

i have done tons of research on whether or not their ever was a digest version of return of the jedi and so far have turned up nothing.

it appears with ken films going out of business their is not one unless there was some scarce foreign version or something.

Celebrity Meltdowns
Time
all i can say is who did not see this coming from a mile away britney's little sister being the sex image of the teenie bopper crowd and disney sold her with her image. sure sex sells it just is sick when the girl is only sixteen.

LOL, LMAO!

speaking of celebrity meltdowns how about that baldwin guy yelling at his daughter or russel crow hitting the hotel dude with the phone, classic.

best of all time britney shaved bald bashing the car with an umbrella HAHAHAHAH!
