What Went Wrong/What Can Be Avoided Thread
Time

The movies were sterile and i actually hated the characters.

The biggest problem for me with II and III is that they could have written an Anakin who we were sympathetic to and even genuinely liked before his fall.

A good person seduced to evil.

The prequels show he was never good except for maybe in episode I.

But as an adult is never shown making good decisions or being all that heroic.

How is he this legendary hero and Jedi that made Luke want to be a Jedi?

They were shot in 1080p.

Holy carp! I had heard about them existing in a 1080p master, but that's crazy!

Did they just suppose the resolution of their monitors was the maximum the films would need to be for posterity? Who does that?

There was an article years ago with George saying that 1080p is good enough. That it about matches quality wise what you'd see from a projected 35mm image. I wish I could find that article.

I cannot find the article but i think he was actually referencing the DVD release in 2004 and not the actual high def master. Which is worse he thought 480P was perfect quality for all time.

What do you LIKE about the EU?
Time

What i like is most of the dark horse comics but not all, and most of the bantam and del rey books but not all.

There has been a tendency of quality over quality but after the real dry spell years before dark empire and heir to the empire most was forgiven.

There is not enough i dislike about the comics, games, and novels to have them suddenly all be canceled or pretend they never happened.

Depending on if the sequels are shit the only thing i may pretend never happened are the prequels and all the Disney continuity, including rebels and the new 2015 comics.

That reminds me have to buy some dark horse trades and some of the current comics before they are gone thanks to Disney.

I doubt any of my favorite EU characters will make a return in the Disney continuity and am almost glad they won't i could not stomach a Disney princess version of Mara.

Can Episode VII ignore the prequels?
Time

What is the possibility on them using prequel cameos like how PJ used Cameos in the Hobbit films of actors from LOTR?

I would prefer they did not do so.

They don't have to make fan friendly references to the prequels when they are trying to get a new audience nor can they simply ignore half the films that exist.

I may be wrong and JJ may indeed ignore the prequels. But i doubt it from interviews i have read in the past Kasdan never struck me as much of a hater of those movies. He may have disagreed with some things from Return of The Jedi to the prequels but was never a basher or a hater and always praised Lucas.

Some things obviously won't make a return if they are smart. No reference to midi- clorians, no Sith rule of two, no prophecy. I do suspect that Sith and the Empire will be in the movies though.

Who should the villain(s) of the sequel trilogy be? (if the sequel trilogy has villains)
Time

Palatine was a horrible parody in the prequels. Tolerably when played as a politician but when unmasked in Revenge of the Sith comic book cheese level bad.

I always preferred the version in Empire not the look but the voice characterization in the 1980 version.

Ian requested that he be allowed to do his own thing on Return of the Jedi because otherwise he would not do it.

Lucas initially wanted him to copy the Empire Strikes Back version of the Emperors voice.

He already became a comic book villain in Jedi but not yet a total parody.

I don't want a return of the character and we already know they have said they are not doing EU adaption so if he resurrected its just a bad ripoff of Dark Empire.

General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread
Time

Guess the rules have been relaxed/ changed used to be image only posts or animated gifs got one banned.

Unless the rules don't apply to mods.

And i certainly am not a mod.

Found the 2010 version in Jay's thread.

  1. No personal attacks.
  2. No excessive profanity.
  3. Stay on topic.
  4. No image-only posts unless the image has a direct bearing on the topic at hand and it adds value to the discussion.

Guess i have been guilty of Number 3 from time to time but number 4 is very vague.

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**
Time

The last person Disney bean counters gave that much free reign to was the director of John Carter. Between that and The Lone Ranger the studio lost a billion dollars.

Empire was a nightmare for Lucas three times the shooting schedule and budget he would have wanted.

Lucas would have shot it dirty and quick with few if any retakes or reshoots and would have had more camera coverage, similar to how Jedi and Star Wars were made. And assembled the film in editing. He would have not done slow character moments, long setups , or encouraged good acting.

I am sure other than huge inflation the weather In Finse was not on Kershner's side. Still Lucas was on the hook with the bank loan and that cannot be fun even if Empire unlike Spielberg's 1941 made a big profit.

Even after all the compromises on Jedi to keep the budget down it still cost far more than Lucas would have liked. But the time he made Phantom Menace and it cost more than double what Jedi cost did he feel different i don't know.

Wasn't Phantom Menace budgeted at 95 million or something?

At this point, I could care less. If Abrams fucks the ST up, I can choose to ignore it, just like I ignore the PT, the SE, and the parts of the EU I don't like. Things would go on as they were before.

All we know if he is a work for hire director.

I fully expect he won't be involved with directing or writing either one of the sequels, i could be wrong but i see as many as three directors on the sequel trilogy like the original.

If he ends up directing all three i would be really surprised.

I also would not be surprised if different writers are on all three unless they rope Kasdan into writing all three films.

Am I the only one who's afraid of Abrams becoming all-powerful like Lucas was?

No. Kathleen Kennedy is all powerful like Lucas.

Or more likely who ever heads up Disney, and also the shareholders of Walt Disney company.

The Bean counters and money bags are all powerful. Lucas was the artist as well as chairman of the board. The days of the artist with a singular vision are over. Its time for the corporation to make a watered down product as mainstream as possible for the masses.

Even the though they will be called LUCASFILMS they are not Lucasfilms. He is not making them. Disney bought the trademark and will use it confusing people.

Can Episode VII ignore the prequels?
Time

I will admit even though i found a few episodes here and there amusing,i never really watched any full seasons after the early years.

In fact the only thing i really watched religiously was treehouse of horror specials and taped every one up til about 1995.

I also lost quite a few quarters on the arcade. But i never was a giant fan.

I did like the Mark Hamill episode though Mayored to the mob.

Michael Bay Bombs
Time

No way near as Epic as Bill O on inside edition when the teleprompter failed.

As much as a hate Bayformers i think IV with Marky Mark will sadly be a hit movie. And not a bomb in terms of boxoffice but probably as big a bomb a 1-3 with the critics.

Ninja Turtles i think will be a hit but it could be a really bad turkey like lone ranger or john carter.

THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)
Time

I saw broadcasts on HDNET and TCM. Sadly they were the George Lucas director's cut with the listed original theatrical release date.

A little like Spike TV listing the original release dates for the 2004 versions of the star wars trilogy.

I even think the blu ray has the same sin for listing star wars as 1977 when its 2011.

Transformers: The Movie (1986 animated version) (a WIP)
Time

Is there any chance their will ever be a region A release by Sony of the blu ray? The Sony video line went bye bye even before they released their versions of the G1 cartoons.

Apparently Shout Factory cannot release a DVD or Blu ray because Sony won't lease it to them.

Either that or Paramount who makes the films won't let them.

Its never been really known why.
