The Dark Knight Movie Discussion (July 18th, 2008)
Time

The thing that bothered me the most on the original Batman begins dvd release was no audio commentary by Nolan and Bale.

Will the blu have this?

If not i don't see any reason to rebuy the film i already own on dvd. Other than subtantially improved picture and soundtrack.

I have the single disc release of the dvd. I rented the 2 disc so called special edition and there were like no real special features on the second disc. Other than a lame digital comic book and the pre release materials on tv and in the digital press kit.

The one reason i am rebuying Casino Royale in the rumored november release ia that it will Have the Martin Campbell commentary, a real making of, and the deleted scenes.

Dark Knight and Quantum of solace should make up for the pains of having to endure a crapy 4th Indiana Jones movie. Iron Man also is a really good comic book movie.

I have heard rave reviews from the comic book community on the new hulk, most of what was based on the fight scene at the end and the incredibly Expenive cgi. Nobody ever metioned story or romance being in the movie, which is suprising since that is how they have advertised the movie to the non comic book crowd.

This show was great during its run.

If will continue to be great until they pull it off the air.

What will they replace it with?

The show the executives at sci fi were hoping to replace it with has since been cancelled, The new flash gordon.

This show has remained relevent to our times which was the thing that made the classic star trek series great.  But which enterprise failed miserably to follow.

Hard to beleive the guy who wrote that show actually writes this.

George Lucas's Interview with Seth MacFarlane (from the Family Guy DVD)
Time

I'm sorry if you disagree with me. But I won't apologize for my opinions.

George Lucas and Steven Spielberg are being added to my shit list of directors.

If Spielberg makes another good film sometime in the future i may relent since he did release the original versions of e.t. and close encounters on dvd.

As for Lucas i have always been confused at to his treatment of the original star wars trilogy, unless he somehow changes his mind. Which i seriously doubt. The man is stubborn which is his strength and weakness at the same time.

Again he can tinker the films to his liking as long as he does what every other director worth their salt has done, release decent quality copies of the theatrical cuts in anamorphic.

I'm not asking for a multi million dollar clean up job like lowry or the 1997 release. just what we got in cinemas circa 1977-1983. I don't think that is too much to ask.

"A fanatic is someone who increases his efforts when he's lost sight of his goal"

I have never lost sight of my goal. That is to have the originals restored for a proper dvd release. I signed the petition. I have been a Supporter of George since i was a very young kid. It was only until he treated the movies he created that i loved as a child with a grave disrespect that i turned against him. He became the villain instead of the hero.

My parents went to see his films before i was born so you could say i'm a second generation fan. MY dad is around Lucas age, indeed they shared a lot of the same interests like drag racing cars. MY dad was a huge fan of graffiti.

If i really hated George as much as you guys think why would i have an autographed starlog magazine from the 10th anniversary of star wars signed by him as one of my prized posessions?

That i would own like 13 copies of star wars on every format?

That i would have memorized the Indiana Jones Trilogy and Original Star Wars Trilogy backwards and forwards and watched them hundreds of times over?

I am only enraged at his treatment of the movies, the man himself was a god to me in my youth. I know blasphemy and all that jazz right. I mean he's the guy that got me interested in mythology, in storytelling, filmaking and science fiction and fantasy. The guy that pointed the way to writers like Asimov, Tolkien, Burroughs. and E.E. smith.

MY life is all the more enriched and i owe the man a very great debt i can never repay.

Dragonball Z

I am positive that I love the original works and they do not need to be distorted or ruined to make a fast buck.

Where in the manga is is stated that they are on earth, use guns like in that poster, or that goku is an alien?

Hollywood hucksters better keep their greedy mitts off my favorite anime. Even if they don't they will not get my money.

Speilberg should be kept like a zillion miles away from any g.i.t.s. project. He already ruined the anime transformers and he ruined Indiana Jones.

I would give the director of Akira a chance if the movie was set in neo tokyo and not new new york. This is almost as bad as disney making the yamato the frickin uss arizona.

Sadly the average american filmgoer is retarded and has add so hollywood has TO Make Subtanceless cgi pieces of crap. It is an awful lot like the assembly line producer derived bubblegum pop, pure crap.

I don't always hate cgi miyzaki has been able to use it effectively without making it souless, i would say the same about Pixar as well. The new evangelion film 1.0 you are not alone is an example where cgi is used effetively to augment the story. The japanese are real artists and craftsman when it comes to their work.

I would only like this dragonball movie is Toriyama san directed it, fuck hollywood.

If the evangelion live action ever gets made it hade better be Hideaki Anno and not Matt Greenfield directing. And especially not Peter Jackson.

As a fan of the manga i must say as an anime purist this film is going to suck.

Hollywood is out to ruin some great anime, I am therefore boycotting the live action Ghost in The Shell and Akira.

Not true to the source material. That actor dude is white and not japanese and chow yun fat is chinese. All Bad american casting.

I will be very suprised if this movie is not a total dud like speed racer.

I was one of the few people who was exstatic when the americanizations Of Space Battleship Yamato and Evangelion were not made.

Nothing Past 1997 - A Fans Stand
Time

I agree wholeheartedly with IrishLuck though i would say nothing past 1995.  Except for the bantam novels and the dark horse comics.

1996 was shadows of the empire, now i don't entirely hate shadoes but characters like Xizor and Dash Rendar aka cheap Han Solo knockoff were not needed.

1997 was the year that will live in infamy the year that buried the originals forever, and allowed these bastard creations called special editions to take their place.

1999 Jar Jar and prequels premiere nuff said.  Also Chewie dies in Vector Prime and the New Jedi crap. i mean order novels are released.

2006 non anamorphic gout from 1993 laserdisc released as bonus discs.

George Lucas's Interview with Seth MacFarlane (from the Family Guy DVD)
Time

I could see him wrecking the one film in the trilogy he actually directed, but he did not direct empire strikes back and return of the jedi.

I cannot believe Kersh let him ruin empire strikes back. As for Marquand he is dead. Does Lucas even have respect for the dead?

He replaced shaw with christensen, why not remove the other directors name and put his on the films.

If i was Kersh i'd disown the special editions of Empire and have allan smithee put in instead.

As for the prequels as far as i'm concerned he can add and deleted things to his liking since they suck anyway, there is nothing he can do to ruin them further.

Why am i not surprised.

Luca$ wants to keep the original version out of collector's hands.

Bfi and Afi prints are also out of his hands. as well as the library of congress.

Otherwise he would have them destroyed.

I feel the same way Lucas does about the holiday special as i do the special editions and the prequels.  All the dvds should be smashed to bits and burned.  The oneg and prints ot the special editions should be altered back to the original cuts, and any thing else should be destroyed.  All the added cgi belongs in the trim bins not the original scenes.

George Lucas's Interview with Seth MacFarlane (from the Family Guy DVD)

watching this interview made me want to puke.   Seriously i thought George Could not go and lose any more respect and then he goes and opens his mouth.  All he watches is Family Guy and Jackass reruns.  Sort of expalins all those fart and poop jokes in the Phantom Menace.

He does not know the movies script as seen in a previous interview, and now he does not even recognize John Williams signature tunes.  He does not even bother watching the movies, i guarantee you he did not watch the originals or re-read the original scripts before writing the prequels.   Proved what i had always feared the prequels were a deliberate cash in and he is not a fan of the movies.

Robert A. Harris on Film Grain and Blu-Ray
Time

To me there is nothing so stupid as digital film grain. Artificial grain added after the cleaning process of an old movie or for just looks.

The lowry Bond and Indiana Jones removed all the fine grain as well as the dirt so they put digital film grain over the entire image, makes me want to throw the dvd's in the trash

As for star wars their is a reason Lucas wanted to remove all the grain so that the films would better match the new cgi and the prequels.

A lot of the removing of grain from films is because people want a pristine clean 21st century looking image that looks like it would have been shot on HD Video.

CGI vs. Real Effects
Time

Unlike the shumacher films, which had over the top bad cgi and bad acting

And that just like taking the material seriously, is why nolan's batman rules.

I was watching batman forever on tv today and the acting by Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones is cringe worthy.

I had always thought the film was better than Batman and Robin, but it sucks maybe a little less. Still it really sucks.

I never did like Jim Carrey flaying the riddler as a giddy gay guy weirdo.

Shumacher, along with Micheal Bay, Mcg, and Brett Ratner are some of the worst directors ever.

Make your own Star Wars crawl!
Time
I wonder if it had anything to do with my crawl about the gout and the death of the original trilogy by special edition and prequels.

Doubtful, still there were many other crawls created about how shitty the special editions and prequels were.

A guy even made a crawl about killing george lucas in the middle of the night with a shovel, that is way too overboard. LOL

Still how different was this site than star wars mashups at the original site and the slew of material on youtube?

Now if Universal Pictures and King Features should sue Lucasfilm for using the roll up in the first and subsequent star wars movies. God knows GL lucas never did hundreds of copyright infringement and plagiarism in creating star wars.

Some of the works he swiped from may be in the public domain now but not in 1973 when he wrote that first screen treatment.

Never mind that the treatment is almost word for word taken verbatim from lucas friend Michael Ritchie's book on the films of kurosawa. The synopsis Ritchie wrote for the hidden fortress.

In the third draft script he even stole lines verbatim from Gandalf in the Hobbit, even the kiber crystal the numinous object was stolen from tolkien's lord of the rings.

Get this both the estate of Frank Herbert and Edger Rice Burroughs wanted to sue Lucas for stealing. Neither case ever made it to court, on the one hand because Herbert died before he could pursue a case and Lucas removed the deliberate burroughs borrowings from the final draft script.

According to some Lucas is the biggest hack plagiarist there ever was.

I would not go that far, i think the original star wars tried to put Lucas boyhood daydreaming on film.

Sure he got away with what would be unthinkable today because of the tightening and extra strict laws now put into place, i don't think you could write a film today with so many homages to your favorite classical music, books, comics and films without being sued.

The other problem being Now in Literature and Film you have copies of copies of derivative works. Whatever resonance or originality was to be found in the star wars oot is noticeably absent in the copies other filmakers have made. It does no one any good when three of the bad copies out there happen to be the prequels written by the same author of the originals.

Star Wars - The Vintage Edit (* unfinished project *)
Time
Unless George Lucas somehow changes his mind and has the oot restored, or the X0 project comes out, this seems to be the only way to have a good watchable version that approximates the 1977 original.

I have the gout and the dvnr smearing and whatever digital sharpening was done is awful and makes the movie unwatchable.

The only way i can see to possibly make the gout look better is to replace the worst sections with the japan special collection footage, only this would take a lot of color correcting and matching to get the two sources to match.

Robert Harris Godfather Restoration WHY cannot lucas restore the oot ?
Time
the Lynn Hale resonse e-mail quoted verbatim

" I wanted you to know how much we appreciate the passion and enthusiasm you have for Star Wars, and thank you for sharing your concerns about our upcoming DVD release.

The DVDs being released in September will contain two versions of Star Wars: Episodes IV, V and VI – the Special Editions (which represent George’s vision of the movies) and the first versions, which will be included as bonus material. We hoped that releasing those “original” movies on a bonus disc would be a way to have some additional fun with the debut of the movies as individual DVDs. We certainly did not want it to become a source of concern or frustration for any of our fans.

As you may know, an enormous amount of effort was put into digitally restoring the negatives for the Special Editions. In one scene alone, nearly 1 million pieces of dirt had to be removed, and the Special Editions were created through a frame-by-frame digital restoration. The negatives of the movies were permanently altered for the creation of the Special Editions, and existing prints of the first versions are in poor condition.

So many fans have requested the original movies, we wanted to find a way to bring them to you. But since these movies do not represent George's artistic vision, we could not put the extraordinary time and resources into this project as we did with the Special Editions. The 1993 Laserdisc masters represented the best source for providing the original versions as DVD bonus material. Although these are non-anamorphic versions, they do preserve the original widescreen composition of the movies.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans – now or in the future – to restore the earlier versions.

We hope you will understand our decision and, again, want to let you know how much we appreciate your interest and enthusiasm."

Sincerely,
Lynne Hale
publicity@lucasfilm.com

to things i want to draw attention to 1. " The negatives of the movies were permanently altered for the creation of the Special Editions"

2."We want you to be aware that we have no plans – now or in the future – to restore the earlier versions."

So put that in your pipe and smoke it Johnboy the next time you so much have the temerity to call me a liar, a Lucasfilm spokeperson quoted verbatim on George's hatred of the originals and destruction of the 0-neg.

I wish i could find the old comment by Lucas on coloring the classic 3 stooges as it clearly paints him as a hypocrite and anything but a film preservationist in light of 2006 and the crap release that is the gout.

Point number 3 "these movies do not represent George's artistic vision" bullshit on that As if Greedo shooting first was a part of george's original vision it would be in the shooting script.

I will let up on George when he releases the oot in better quality and when i don't have to rely on laserdisc for the original cuts of American Graffiti and THX 1138 without added cgi.

I am also holding on to my Indiana Jones trilogy first issued dvd boxset as i now know the eventual blu ray will have the fake cgi added to the tv broadcasts as Indiana IV is on the big screen.

"he couldn't have done more damage than was already done."

Apparently you have not seen the prequels and the special editions.

I don't think as a consumer that it is in any way irrational to want the original versions of the movies in watchable quality, the gout does not qualify to these standards.

All i want is the 1977-1983 theatrical originals.

It's not that hard to do for a billionaire to step aside and loose his tyranical control over his creations and give the people what they want.

I'm sure i'm not the only one who thinks George went off the deep end and went a little crazy with the cg. especially so since in star wars to jedi he says the story is more important than special effects.

I had great respect for that George Lucas, George as he is now is not the same person.

If lucas was not so wrong in his treatment of the originals and his fans, sites like this would not exist
