The establishing shots of OOT compared to the '97 special edition and '04 DVDs.
Time

That is actually from the documentary from star wars to jedi.

My favorite quote is my sig

If you count the Ebert interview, the making of rotj book and from star wars to jedi.

You have 3 different sources where he basically says the stories and characters are more important than the special effects.

The worse case scenario happened Lucas went against his own advice, he focused too much on the cgi effects and not enough on the human element of the stories.

I can remember reading once upon a galaxy the making of empire strikes back and lucas yells at kersh and says "your ruining my movie!". He takes the film completely goes nuts and recuts it and it is shit.

You think things are really bad.

Can you imagine a lucas directed empire strikes back or return of the jedi?

I am glad the did not direct them or the oot would be as bad as the prequels.

Pollock Dale's book skywalking is the only real bio on old george as far as i'm concerned because it is not full of revisionist lies and missinformation.

i love these quotes.

"Dale Pollock: I think Lucas has become more interested in his digital technology and advances than character and emotion, which is his unfortunate arc from AMERICAN GRAFFITI to EPISODE 3. The depth of character and complex emotions present in the first three films are clearly absent from the first two prequels"

"Dale Pollock: Because essentially he hates directing, and has only directed the first three prequels only because they necessitate little actual direction of actors, and far more attention paid to effects. The great mystery to me is why Lucas has never bothered to make the personal films he vowed to make after the success of the first STAR WARS when he could have done anything he wanted. He has never explained this, yet he's still talking about doing it some day. I wouldn't hold my breath."

"Dale Pollock: I don't think he has any skill in directing good actors in any kind of film, big or small. To take talents like Samuel Jackson, Natalie Portman and Christopher Lee, and do so little with them, is almost criminal. I still don't think he enjoys directing, he only enjoys manipulating technology that doesn't talk back or have a different point of view."

i have to disagree with this one "He may be mercenary, but he's not greedy." referring to george.

New York, N.Y.: If Lucas has so little interest in directing, as you've said several times, then why didn't he have someone else do the job in the prequels? Other people did episodes 5 and 6, so why not the same for a prequel (or two or three)?

"Dale Pollock: Because he was so angry at how he felt Irvin Kershner and Richard Marquand ruined his vision with EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI, respectively. He felt he could not entrust the prequels to any outside director, and that he would make the "sacrifice" of directing them himself to keep the purity of his intentions."

"Dale Pollock: He had very specific outlines, which each ran 5-8 pages. I read them for a total of 12 films, so at least that many were planned. The most detailed synopses were for Episodes I-VI. He says he has no more STAR WARS features planned, but I still think he could change his mind, because I know he worked out stories that followed the original 3 films."

Is laserdisc better than VHS?
Time

Laserdisc is better than vhs in so many ways.

The only thing i think is better with vhs is you don't need a seperate closed caption decoder for subtitled movies that are hardsubbed onto the vhs tapes and sometimes laserdisc.

Unsurpassed picture quality for the time many movies are near dvd quality on a standard definition tv set.

Uncompressed high fidelity digital audio tracks.

Theatrical cuts of movies the studios could not leave the fuck alone. etc

Vhs cost cheaper but you clearly get what you pay for.

Laserdiscs actually store the video analog since it is an analog format. The only thing ever digital was the soundtracks and that was added much later in the life of laserdiscs hence many earlier releases being analog only.

one feature i think was unique was cx noise reduction on analog soundtracks. As developed by cbs inc.

CAV format discs allowed stopping on a single frame and frame mode. Much more film like than vhs or dvd.

They had nice jacket art, covers and sometimes insert and liner notes. Criterion were the best to be had.

Biggest problems with LD:

-Cost

-Laser rot

- don't make movies on it anymore

-Amount of storage space required twice or 3 times that of dvd.

Those that have large vinyl collections would not be bothered by this though.

The same can probably be said of dvd but japan always had the superior laserdisc releases in terms of video and audio quality.

We have gotten to the point where the HD-DVD titles and Blu rays here in america and japan are pretty much the same in standards of quality with a few exceptions.

This is really strange after the way they killed Chef on south park because he defended Scientology and Tom Cruise and quit the show.

I somehow highly doubt in real life he will be reanimated as a darth vader esque child pedophile.

I wonder what the creators of south park will say.

I hope it is not "the bastard got what he deserved and what was coming to him"

The 2008 '<strong>The Clone Wars</strong>' animated theatrical movie - a general discussion thread
Time

You guys may want to think of this as just a kiddie flick but it is canon on the highest level G-Canon or george lucas canon.

Same goes for force unleashed and the new live action tv series.

As good as Genddy's show was George was not really involved in the writing or creation so it is not canon it is elseworlds or EU, Like the novels and the comics and other games lucas has not worked on.

I am not sure how but there have been some hints that clone wars and force unleashed are linked in some way.

I am not sure if this is because Anakin is a Jedi master in clone wars and has a padawan, and that Vader is a Sith master and has an apprentice in force unleashed.

Both go against canon.

Anakin was never elevated to the rank of master on the jedi council one of the reasons he got mad and turned to the dark side.

Also the rule of 2 philosophy aka the prequel canon and the ot canon are at odds with vader having an apprentice. Since Luke Skywalker was ment to be the dude to join vader in the sith and overthrow the emperor, though Luke obviously rejected that.

I'll quote yoda "Always two there are. NO more, no less. A master and an apprentice" referring to Darth Banes imposed rule of 2.

Unless between the trilogies or during the ot years the rule of two was abolished. As if finally seen in the legacy comics with the reborn sith.

Anakin was only elevated to the rank of a full jedi shortly before he turned according to one of the novels, which does not agree with his earlier Knighting as seen in the genddy series.

His padawan apprenticeship most likely lasted longer than other students because he never followed the rules and was too easily angered and showed way too much emotional attachments.

Sunday256 if the writing really is better than the prequels than you can thank Haden Blackman for that and not George.

Though i seriously doubt that from the trailer "kidnapped Jabba's son has been" LOL worse than the prequels.

and Ahsoka getting spit up on by the baby hutt and saying "I did not train for this"

Marvel StarWars Digital ComicBook DVD
Time

I must chime in and say that anyone who actually wants to support the comic industry downloading bootlegs is an insult, when dark horse reprinted all the comics as archive editions in Trade paperback.

They did the entire regular run except for return of the jedi 1-4

The ewok and droids are not belonging to the same continuity so why would they include those?

They took incredible care that the digital coloring was done as to match the originals. I know i have compared some of my comics to the redoes and they are very close.

The Al Williamson stuff was my favorite. So i was a little pissed when they did not recreate the coloring of the original return of the jedi 1-4 and include it. They did reprint it sometime in the nineties but they had Pamela Rambow recolor it with garish modern colors.

Not all but some of those pizazz and amazing heroes stuff, and the uk stuff is being reprinted in the Luke Skywalker omnibus. I think way of the wookiee and the day after the death star. Not sure about world of fire i know that was released by marvel books in paperback.

I bought the devilworlds stuff back in the day and was not that impressed with it.

Then their was that one russ manning that was ghosted by someone else in the L.A. times that was never reprinted.

The original color sundays from the Williamson and goodwin newpaper strips have also never been published. Classic star wars was a complete recoloring and the russ cochrane 3 volume set is only in black and white.

If you want to download the way the comics originally looked i say go for it. for preservation sake.

I would also own the dark horse volumes, then i would have no qualms over downloading the stuff.

Although either way it is considered illegal. Though none of those dcp guys on demonoid have ever been prosecuted as of yet.

The only cases i have heard of have been in japan and they were over the illegal electronic distribution of manga.

Oh and that star trek dvd comic thing is actually licensed it is not a bootleg.

It just does not include the new content published by IDW comics.

Which Includes Stellar Stuff like Year 4, and the digital remastered gold keys.

They have the old gold keys in the trek collection.

I must admit when i saw the alien ship at the end of IV i almost felt going "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" LOL

"The space between the spaces" has to be the most inane and stupid piece of dialogue ever in the history of motion pictures.

I felt like saying George get the fuck outta here an alien ship, and this line wtf?

The prairie dogs were too much like caddyshack 2, but even worse for being cgi.

I know you love Tarzan George, i'm partial to the Works of E.R.B. myself, but did we really need shia cgi flying through the air with monkeys?

That is what i would ask him if i could.

That and why for fucks sake he had greedo shoot first.

I'll be the first to admit Revenge of the Sith and Indiana Jones IV were not awful films, they just were not great films.

They never lived up to the hype.

They had entertaining moments but the cringe worthy moments outnumbered those and brought me out of the movies more than a few times.

If George had done his job or hired competant writers faneditors around the world would not have to edit out those awfully scripted scenes to make the movies watchable again.

I am not a fan of fan edits either i am the last person in the world interested in that.

But you know something is funny when ADigitalMAN's revenge of the sith is better than George's cut.

You know hollywood is churning out pure shit when Indiana Jones IV is better than Mummy III and x files 2.

This film felt more like "Indiana Smith and the Little green men from Mars"  than it did Indiana Jones.

I just say mummy 2 on tv the other day and indy 4 just replaced the scarabs with Giant ants, total lack of imagination.  Another scene was right out of X-files and another right out of the first national treasure.

That is where Indiana Jones ended up ripping off the ripoffs.

Super 8mm Digest Films and Features anyone else here collect them?
Time

I just purchased the complete feature of flash gordon mars attacks the world compiled from the serial of flash gordon's trip to mars.

Other than the Ken Films star wars and empire what other interesting ones are there?

I have heard of the digests of star trek I& II, superman 1978, planet of the apes, alien, raiders of the lost ark etc.

I recently saw a digest for star wars in scope from cineavision with really nice color unfaded sell for 60 bucks on ebay.

Getting these transfered to dvd would be interesting.

Not sure if this belongs in the preservation or collecting section so i posted it here.

The Mods can always move it to where they deem appropriate.

Well the working Title for episode II literally was Jar Jar's big adventure.

But i'm sure that was Lucas little joke put there for his own enjoyment.

And i really don't think people committed suicide over it.

But then you never know there are nuts out there.

Seriously i saw on the news that in some other country a kid was convinced GTA IV talked to him and told him to go kill a bunch of people.  Guess what he went and did kill people.

Lucas on Indy V
Time

I do not believe i have ever been on a bandwagon since i was a fan of star wars when being a fan was not in vogue or popular.

Lucas is solely responsible for creating devision amongst the fans, and generational groups.

If he had left the movies alone we would not have to waste breath debating over versions.

From 1977-1983 there were only 3 films and that was it you were either a fan or you were not.

I once admired Lucas but that was long ago, and i never gave him undue fan worship or godhood status. He had made some pretty good and entertaining films i found quite a diversion in my youth. whether THX 1138, American Graffiti, or Star Wars. Yes these films had their flaws but they were loved bespite those minor things. They did not need updating for modern audiences. Films are like a time capsule from the time in which they were made.

It would be utterly stupid to add new cgi effects to the wizard of OZ, or the old flash gordon serials. As dumb as adding 90s effects to a seventies movie.

Lucas may have said it himself once.

IF a film does not have likable characters or a good story then why bother?

"a Special effect without a story is a pretty boring thing"

The prequels had a weak story he chose to start with the meat of the story that was the middle trilogy and even he once admitted the other stuff was just backstory.

No amount of special effects whether good or bad will save a movie with wooden unlikable characters we cannot relate to. ILM's advances technically are breathtaking but they are no substitute for story.

Otherwise you have spent millions to billions on a mind numbing cgi wankfest only to be up in the running for technical awards at the oscars.

Lord of the Rings by Peter Jackson is guilty of the same cgi sins as the prequels but had likable characters you could relate to and a good story, which among many film fans i know makes them a modern trilogy comparible dare i say it the oot.

The story of Luke Skywalker was rooting for the underdog and the oppressed. the Story of a traditional hero not like today where villains and anti heroes are the heroes of films. Where a creepy youngling serial killer becomes the hero of the saga and dethrones the story of Luke. Where goth crap and dark for darkness sake have taken over cinemas. Where is the hero that kids need to root for in stories, the good fairy story every child needs i think lucas once said.

If you like the special editions and the prequels more power to you. I'm certainly not going to even try stopping you. I paid to see them in theaters each on opening day, and own the dvds. But pretty please cut the crap when you say they are comparable to the oot because lets face it folks that is utter nonsense. They would not have ever gotten made if not for the first trilogy which is the second chronologically.

Lucas should have moved the story forward and stuck to Luke's story. and not waited sixteen years until he was a totally different person causing a broken link in the trilogies.

The whole problem with the prequels is you already know pretty much who lives and who dies and what is going to happen there are little room for surprises. The whole success of the venture was hinging on showing anakin's transformation into vader and showing he was a good man and beneficent before that happened.

Lucas fucked up the turn making it instantaneous instead of the slow seduction hinted at in the oot. Instead of turning from a good man to a bad man you a get a whiny teenage emo spoiled brat you want to punch in the face.

Not only does that turn the vader in the suit into a total whiny bitch, but you also feel nothing for anakin except he got what he deserved. He could have been left to burn in the lava and not a soul would care based on the botched characterization of a classic villain.

The biggest problem for me anakin before the suit and after the suit zero character development.

You never get that he cares for another person (except padme and that only as an object aka selfish). You never see him make any sacrifices for the republic or fighting side by side his fellow common man in the war.

All you get is a selfish ego driven bastard you really wish obi wan put out of his misery on Mustafar.

You do feel bad for obi wan, kudos to Ewan for pulling that off. You do feel as though he loses a brother and a son. someone he loved. Except none of the emotional depth hinted at there was pulled off on screen. Not even in the novels. Completely forgotten.

Hayden Can pull off the angst and the brooding but he is not a terribly good actor. I saw him in Jumper literally one of the worst movies i have ever seen.

His performance there was not great, still not as bad and as wooden as the prequels.

Do i have any ill will towards the guy, none at all.

He is still young and can study and work hard to become a better actor as he grows older.

Maybe someday he will do an awesome movie and great acting and we will look back and remember when, he was in that prequel movie and was all wooden like a stand in for a cgi they would do later in post.  LOL.

What kind of internet connection do you have at your home?
Time

I have verizon fios fiber optic. It is way too expensive 50 bucks a month just for the internet. Also the promised 20 megs per second is most likely a stretch we really only get 10 to 15 max.

Connection speed and download speed are entirely different things even on a fiber optic line the best is usually for downloading a file 3-5 megabites per second and maxes out at ten.

Unless you have direct downloading no amount of download speed will help the files go faster. Torrents still are notoriously slow and pathetic. legal or illegal it does not matter a dual layer dvd could take a week.

The service dude claimed you could get 50 megs per sec is you pay 150.00 a month, but as he said unless you are running some kind of server that is overkill.

Unlike comcast they don't throw in the virus software and internet protection. They cost extra.

I bought norton because there was no way in hell i was paying another 50 just to protect my computer and internet every month.

This is where i think the studios ideas of downloading HD movies have to be joking. A blu ray film is 50 gigs. If it takes about for hours for a 4-9 gig file even over studio websites how can they claim instant access in the future to such content It would take a day or 2 even at the fastest speeds to download a file that big.

We are at least 5 or 10 years away from that being viable even for the most wealthy internet users. Nevermind the areas that do not get cable internet or fiber optic in this country or worldwide.

All i can respond with is a big LOL!

Kissing asses and jumping on bandwagons is what i'm talking about not doing in reference to the tfn crowd and George Lucas.

I don't need anyone to kiss my ass or play follow the leader. All i want is a decent transfer of 3 of my favorite movies in at least dvd anamorphic quality, and i don't think as a paying consumer it is too much to ask. Seeing as Speilberg, Scott, and Coppola have.

I too pay for food, rent and shelter and have to work what do you want a fucking cookie?

Now you really need to be able to logically seperate hating George Lucas the man, from the decisions he has made. I don't hate George. But what he had done to the oot is just gosh damn rediculous and pretty much unprecedented in the annals of filmdom. Aside from his greed and filmakers ego he seems to be a pretty decent human being warm and kind, and a good father to his kids.

You really have to admit he has been a douche to the fans who love the 1977-1983 versions of the saga.

If he had left it at ROTJ like he did in 1983 we would not have the ruination of a classic. I can remember before the special editions and prequels being glad to be a star wars fan because it was not a giant behemoth cash cow like star trek. I wish he would make those other little films and leave Indy and Star Wars alone enough already. Less is more.

I think when Lucas made the assertion for film preservation and their artifacts like the lfl archives, i don't think this is what he had in mind.

I think this is rather mean and not in a spirit of fun as the Jar Jar in carbonite was.

Still i'm sure there are fans who wish he could be frozen in carbonite.   Then shown to other filmakers "see this is what happens to you when you go back and ruin your old good movies"

The score is not that awful is just is not opulent and does not scream "Epic" like John Williams themes do.

I sounds a lot like a cartoon tv score might sound.

Being from warners does not help though you don't have that awsome prelude of the fox fanfare to the main theme. Also the quoting of the main them is a bit off and not at correct pitch and speed.

The only star wars score besides Shadows to not use the LSO, epic fail and lame.

Agreed i also enjoy Joel Mcneely's shadows score, though the parts i liked quoted williams themes from both star wars and Indiana Jones so not really liking his work.

I enjoyed the scores to Knights of The old republic until i got sick of hearing them.

the audio samples can also be found on amazon.com

I would not be surprised that there is a tie in videogame in the works since the movie looks like the videogame cutscenes from lucasarts, would fit right in.

I don't like the 3-D cgi style but i also did not like the style Genddy used.

That being said there is room for improvement visually and in terms of story when the show hits tv screens.

Not everything marketed to kids and young people need be crap.

It is for kids only after all shit Lucas used as excuse on prequels will not fly here.

The 2008 '<strong>The Clone Wars</strong>' animated theatrical movie - a general discussion thread
Time

yes i bought the prequel scores.

For 2 Reasons

I love the lso

I love the work of John Williams.

More than that admittedly not as epic and spectacular as the original trilogy scores there were some good pieces of music here and there.

I liked duel of the fates, across the stars, and battle of the heroes.

That he was able to create such music with what little he was given has always been amazing to me.

To give three pretty much Souless cgi popcorn flicks any emotion at all deserves kudos.

Even though severally flawed the prequels did have some good moments.

Just that the magic was not there that was in the originals.

Fans would not be so split on whether to love them or hate them if George would only give respect to the original films and older fans.

I was exstatic early on when it was announced Indy IV would be shot old school on location and used the same glass matte paintings and models of the originals as well as a score by the lso.

We all know what we got. A phoned in score, no LSO. NO sale! i refused to buy the cd.

But really the material he did for the harry potter films was so much better than the later star wars stuff even though the potter stuff sounded too much like hook.

So now he is listed as doing superman the man of steel aka superman VI, the next 2 potter films supposedly and Jurassic Park IV as well as Lincoln and that spielberg movie about the vietnam draft dodgers.

That is a lot of stuff considering he stopped scoring films in 2005 and retired. Came out of so called retirement in 2008 to do a score that was light and full of reused material and full of fluff Indiana Jones IV.

I wish Mr Williams well, it will be a sad day indeed when he passes on and joins his friend Jerry Goldsmith.

If only the prequel story was as well done as that of shatterpoint, the two darth bane novels or Knights of the Old Republic.

I would have given clone wars a chance if Lucas kept out of writing the stories as he originally had planned.

The writer Haden Blackman who formerly wrote for dark horse is a hell of a writer, story plotter.

His republic comics were better than George's movies and more adult in content.

Similar to how much better genddy's clone wars was.

Lucas has zero excuse whatsoever for bad plotting and poor writing some of the best sci fi and fantasy writers and artists have at one time or another been Lucasfilm employees.

Matthew Stover could have written one hell of a prequel trilogy.

Even the less than perfect Troy Denning could have done better.

I don't hate everything about the clone wars movie or tv series. I actually Like the Character of Ahsoka, star wars does need its strong female characters. She obviously brings out another side of Anakin we never see in the films 1-3 his role as a master and the one being the adult.

They get to explore Count Dooku's character more.

We also get to see dooku's apprentice Asajj Ventress.

The voice acting will most likely be top notch, we will see some awesome Jedi acrobatics and lightsaber duels and clone troopers battling seperatists.

Supposedly Padme is not a useless character we get to see her in action not just barefoot and pregnant dieing then of a broken heart.

Though she does get captured and plays the damsel in distress like leia in star wars 77.

I hate that it breaks with continuity Ahsoka was not in Revenge of the Sith and Anakin Never attained the rank of master.
Otherwise she would have been killed with the younglings by anakin or been his secret sith apprentice in force unleashed and neither are the case.

Jabba's son thing is also epic fail as far as i'm concerned a baby hutt kidnapped whatever.

They go to see Jabba on Tatooine it would have been interesting to see Nal Hutta and not ruin the jabbas palace reveal in rotj.

I find it laughable how much of the oot now will have to be retconned to not only fit the prequels but also clone wars and force unleashed. They are g canon since lucas worked on them.

But time to time he chooses what to keep canon and remove the holiday special and the ewok movies were once g canon and now are not.

Other good things about it they are using ralph mcquarries design sketches for Jabbas palace, and other things. One of the few usefull articles i ever found on tfn which i usually ovoid like the black plague.

I notice you did not bother to read the Lucas quotes i gave as evidence that he has lost it.

Lucas quotes on Indy V:

“If I can come up with another idea that they like, we’ll do another. Really, with the last one, Steven wasn’t that enthusiastic. I was trying to persuade him. But now Steve is more amenable to doing another one. Yet we still have the issues about the direction we’d like to take. I’m in the future; Steven’s in the past. He’s trying to drag it back to the way they were, I’m trying to push it to a whole different place. So, still we have a sort of tension. This recent one came out of that. It’s kind of a hybrid of our own two ideas, so we’ll see where we are able to take the next one.”

"Indiana Jones only becomes complicated when you have another two people saying ‘I want it this way’ and ‘I want it that way’, whereas, when I first did Jones, I just said, ‘We’ll do it this way’ — and that was much easier. But now I have to accommodate everybody, because they are all big, successful guys, too, so it’s a little hard on a practical level."

focus on this part "I’m in the future; Steven’s in the past. He’s trying to drag it back to the way they were, I’m trying to push it to a whole different place"

Now think of those horrid cgi pieces and bad storytelling in IV and they are all Lucas because he is in the future, LOL.

If he had his way the whole thing would have been done in a computer and be absolute crap like episode 1-3.

I don't envy spielberg one little bit he had a backseat director the whole time on Indiana Jones IV. He tried steering the film closer to raiders and last crusade and lucas wanted a prequel-ized version of Indy.

He was not fortunate to have lucas muddy his film and ruin it.

Lucas should have directed it so he could take all the blame.

Nobody but lucas could have destroyed 2 beloved franchises in 9 years time. instead of killing two birds with one stone.

Star wars Trilogy 1977-1983 R.I.P.

Indiana Jones Trilogy 1982-1989 R.I.P.
