Hey you can use the excuse well THX 1138 made no money so it does not deserve the gold standard dvd treatment. But the original star wars trilogy the highest grossing films and most popular of the seventies and eighties, does not fit the same.

Even a greedy corporation like Paramount gave trek fans the original versions in good quality dvds.
NON anamorphic gout in 2006 is the biggest joke and insult in cinema history.

The lucas who directed Graffiti and Star wars is long gone. He did those films at the pinnacle of his powers as a film maker. Similarily with Raiders, empire strikes back being executive produced by him.
Return of the Jedi was not as good as the first 2 films but at least it completed the trilogy and had some good moments. Willow was a fun picture even though a flop.
I can even enjoy more american graffiti as much as it sucks. Hell i even enjoyed moments of the Holiday Special of star wars, howard the duck and the young indiana jones chronicles.
But i cannot abide the absolute shit prequels and special editions.
I could enjoy the originals and forgot the dross if Lucas only released the real movies from 1977-1983 in acceptable quality for the new millenium.
Not an obsolete video format from 1993 dumped on a second disc as bonus material. Might as well take out a blank dvdr and take a shit on it that is the amount of Work Lucas put into that release.
Besides the fact that a laserdisc video master, without the real theatrical sound mixes and digital video noise reduction ruination of the image. That is supposed to approximate a film series that was released in six track magnetic sound and 70mm.
Lets take out the episode IV title and pretend it is the theatrical version when the movie was already updated several times. The original technicolor colors had faded and remixes were done in 1985 and 1992-93 on the sound track.
Still nothing is as bad as releasing the 2004 set as the original star wars trilogy falsely advertised without the special edition title on the box.
What i meant was star wars no longer exists to tell a story. It only exists as a marketing thing for Lucas computer division to show how advanced their effects are.
To get other directors and artists to hire them for projects.
Star Wars is the dead horse that has been beaten into dust, the cash cow that lucas whored out to become a billionaire, whilst tarnishing his reputation as a reputable storyteller and filmaker.
The whole process of consolidating Both ILM and the games devision lucasarts into one thing was done because they basically did the same thing computer animation, Lucas opened up the presidio for this.
Also the end of in house development by Lucasarts and all their future games being outsourced cannot be a case other than greed.

I am in the bidding on the feature for flash gordon conquers the universe on 2 reels but probably won't win.
Somebody already did a wet gate transfer of a 16mm print of flash gordon rocket ship, the only problem is they colorized it. The Serial Sqaudron release is near quality to the image dvds serials which were taken from 35mm studio vault prints of low use.
I would like to find someone interested in transferring my Flash Gordon Mars Attacks the World. Was going to donate it to the serial squadron until i found out it was a low quality niles print. and that the feature exists as a 16mm print much harder to come by.
The hearst Movie features and the serials are already on dvd the ones i was interested in were the hard to find feature versions that are shorter.
The turner classic movies site sells Mars Attacks the world on dvd. But it appears to be an on demand dvdr title, and i cannot find out the quality also they only take charge cards.
The feature Space Soldiers Conquer the Universe which was televised in the 50s does not appear to be on dvd and i am under the assumption that is the 2 reeler niles print i am bidding on.
See that is what is so fucked up about the special editions.
They fixed some matte lines and left other ones still in, removed and censored some violent scenes and left others in.
It is like they either did not notice, were lazy, or this was Lucas half baked attempt at his perfect "vision".
Supposedly PG-13 was created because of Temple Of Doom though till this day the movie remains PG.
And Lucas coerced the ratings censors to give Revenge of the Sith a PG-13 though it clearly deserved an R rating for the mustafar scenes, where anakin is dissmembered and burns up in the lava, also the beheading of dooku at the beginning of the movie and anakins murder of children though not shown.
Luke Getting his hand cut off in Empire was violent enough in 1980 to get it banned in some countries.
I have the chinese boots and they are not very good quality. The dts mix is a fake cooked up mix, and also the channels even on the 5.1 dd are screwed up.
The video quality is not even laserdisc quality since the laserdiscs were copied to s-vhs and then to dvd.
Even the dual layers suck.
Dark Jedi's special edition transfer is better even if it only have the 2 channel digital track and not the ac3. Ac3 i believe is stored analog on the right analog channel and needs an ac3 RF out and decoder to get the track on the laserdiscs.
This was obviously inferior to dvd where the ac3 is already stored digitally.
I have the g'kar it has bad macroblocking incorrect aspect ratio cropped image and fake 5.1 mix upmix of the televised 2.0 also on the disc. Also pal speedup lame. I much prefer ntsc. Though the screengrabs compared to darkjedi's look sharper, it is where playback and watching the movie where it counts.
Too bad the laserdiscs have a soft image and are interlaced. I have mine and the sound mix on the uncompressed digital stereo tracks rocks.
I just never bother to watch them because i hate the special editions.
I remember at one point a site reviewed the g'kar set as having a shaper image than the 2004 dvd set, this was of course before the HD broadcasts became available as bootlegs at 1080 lines of resolution.
As much as i hate the 2004 cuts the image is superior than any previous release, and i would buy them on blu ray today if they were officially available. Despite the very bad color that Lucas chose for the recut.

But because of this the people who now have the rights can shop the character to any studio, unless DC keeps the film rights exclusively which may be what happened. Still they get millions of dollars in royalties coming their way if the man of steel hits the silver screen.
There is a possibility someday DC's publishing of superman ceases and the creators estates sell the rights to another comics publisher, there is also a cloud of doubt whether the new superman film will even come out in 2010 now that DC and warners no longer own the character.

All of that footage was already known back in 1996 and 1997 when his articles were published in the insider. and many of the same scenes were in the shooting script.
