It was originally Palpatine who created the clone army under the alias of sido dyas= Sidious.

Lucas thought it was too easy to figure out so he had it changed to sifo dyas later on and they created this backstory in the final film and the EU over a non existant jedi who ordered the clones and was killed by Dooku.

But in one of the scripts for Attack of the Clones it was master Sido Dyas.

When did the prequels officially suck?
Time

I'm no Lucas apologist but i think you guys may be taking Star Wars a little too seriously.  It is a movie serial, despite how good the original trilogy was.

It is not supposed to be representing reality.  You can argue Lucas went against canon in terms of story or changed the rules his fictional universe operates out of, but making claims to great drama out of the original trilogy is a bit of a stretch.

I mean you have a super weapon that destroys planets.   That in itself is straight out of science fiction Pulp like smith's Skylark 3.  Examined in reality it is laughable.   You also have sound in space laughable.  The physics are all laughable.

That is why is is a piece of daydream fantasy than real science Fiction.  That is why Lucas calls it Space Fantasy and why the films open " A Long Time Ago.  In a Galaxy, Far, Far way."  Its the same as once upon a time.

Star Wars was a boys adventure wish fulfillment piece Lucas crafted out of his own childhood reading comic books and watching serials like Flash Gordon.

The robot Chicken Piece while funny is wrong. Wrong because he calls himself anakin.  At that point he was darth vader.

My favorite is this g4 parody

Abrams is Destroying Star Trek like Lucas has Destroyed Star Wars
Time

This Trek has an alternate canon history though.  So it does not feature the real earth1 universe Spock, Kirk or bones it like another universe completely.  JJ could have just as easily made it a mirror universe movie instead of a timetravel one to explain away the changes.

When i say the real Kirk and company i mean in terms of fiction obviously and not real life, its to draw a distinction between Star Trek Universe A the real Star Trek, and Universe B the JJ tangent.

If JJ wanted to make a generic sci fi blockbuster he could have made up his own dumb characters instead of choosing to ruin those who have existed for over 40 years.

It could be a good movie and will still not be real canon Star Trek.

Just like Casino Royale was a good film but was not James Bond.

I was expecting Craig in Quantum of Solace to say "the names Bourne.  Jason Bourne".

The wii still does not have its own Zelda game yet.  I mean a Zelda game that was made specifically for the wii from the beginning, Twilight princess is a gamecube game delayed so long it ended up being on both systems.

Mario Galaxy was developed for the wii, and was the first real mario game since mario 64.  Sunshine was an utter joke and dissapointment.

And i'm not sure if the third part in the new Metrod series was developed for the gamecube originally or was for the wii from the start.

Nintendo needs to make some adult games, some games with storytelling depth and movie like cutscenes like an interactive movie game experience or reading a novel.  Final Fantasy has always been my favorite because of these qualities.  Twilight Princess had a somewhat interesting story, i liked the darker tone but Windwaker was brilliant as well.

Mario has always intended to be a cartoon like game.   The storytelling potential has always been shall we say a joke.

How about a good castlevania game for the wii. I remember when those games were only on the nintendo.

I liked the mythic like quality of the new metroid series as well.

I thought it was a bold move for Nintendo for instance to be the first to get the Survival Horror game Resident Evil 4 on the gamecube, before it came out on the other systems.

I want some more SquareEnix titles on the wii and not just gimicky or spinoff games, how about a real final fantasy game developed for the wii.  Or a real Dragon Quest game.  I remember thinking maybe they might have dragonquest 9 on the wii.

Getting the creator of final fantasy to make games exclusively for Microsoft Xbox 360 under the Mistwalker company label would have been quite a thing if his best years were not already behind him, i'm saying that and i liked blue dragon.  Lost Odyssey was a huge ripoff of final fantasy X visually.

I'm not sure but i think Sony still has exclusive rights to Final Fantasy VII therefore preventing it from ever being on the ds or a wii virtual console game.

Not sure if GOD of War 3 will be the smash hit sony needs ever so desperately to get them out of the bottom feeder position in the console wars.  We all know that Metal Gear 4 did not do it, it did not get the same response as the first 3 metal gear solid games.  I think its an awesome and epic game with a great story.  They lost Exclusivity to Final Fantasy XIII.  Sony's crown jewel and thing they always had over nintendo was the fact that they stole square and the final fantasy series away from them.  Then SquareEnix announces The 360 will get the game on 4 standard dvds that would fit on a blu ray disc on the PS3.  Sony gets Final Fantasy Versus XIII as an exclusive but who gives a shit as that is not the canon main story series.

I was going to buy a PS3 like i did a ps1 based on the exclusiveness of a Final Fantasy game.  Now i don't know which system i should purchase the 360 or the PS3.

The 360 will get both Final Fantasy XIII and Mass Effect 2.  Already has Halo 3 and Fable 2.  But the PS3 has Metal gear and is going to have god of war.  tough decision really.

To me as third party developers go and the massive library of games Xbox 360 reigns supreme.  Though in terms of sales especially in Japan the wii and the ds have outsold sony and microsoft both from what i remember hearing was a 3 to 1 margin.  and the PS3 was so expensive that it even failed in japan.  The first xbox failed in japan but its sequel it doing healthy numbers supposedly.

Star Wars and Indiana Jones on Blu-Ray Discussion
Time

Why would George bother putting out a blu ray set of the special edition 2004 set and give at least a portion of the star wars fanbase what they want.

That would be crazy giving people what they want.  Only Ridley Scott, Francis Ford Coppola, and Steven Spielberg can do that.  George Lucas, hell no not in this century.

First you have to get him to admit that the colors were screwed up, as well as the sound on star wars.  That the lightsabers were all wrong.  These wonderful creative decisions that were supposedly deliberate are a joke.

The Wii is a total gimmick and was never meant to be nintendos next gen system hence the name change from the revolution to the wii.  They are working on there next gen system right now that will be for HDTV's.  Currently they are behind Sony and Microsoft in terms of tecnology unless you count gimmicky kiddy games that you play with a thing that looks like a tv remote, lol.

In terms of next gen hardware and graphics and processing power the PS3 wins hands down.  Too bad the only game worth owning that is an exclusive on that system at the moment is Metal Gear 4.

They lost exclusivety to GTA4, and of course the yet to be released Final Fantasy XIII.  Which was a huge blow to sony and a big win for the 360.

Sony got a lot of the Nintendo faithful back in the ps1 era when they landed final fantasy VII as an exclusive, that and the PS2 came along and the ps1 and ps2 were like the snes before them great role playing game systems.  I left nintendo once square went to work for sony, and never looked back.  I have not missed anything as nintendo continues to just do stupid remakes of mario, zelda, and metroid and does nothing original except in terms of gameplay.  I like games that tell a story.   Yeah i played a bit of twilight princess on someone elses wii, but it was largely a ripoff of a link to the past and some other wolf game.

They only have exclusivety To final Fantasy versus XIII the spinoff that has nothing to do with the main franchise game.  Also possibly Exclusivety to God of War 3 is it ever gets made, lol.

Still they are i have heard programming the HD games at 720P and not 1080P yet.

Microsofts tentpole franchise is Halo and there are currently no plans for a 4th Halo game.  And if it does get made it will be without bunjie.  Then Of course they get a limited time of exclusivety on Mass Effect 2 before it gets out on the pc.

I am pissed that there will be no Knights of the Old Republic III for the 360.  They are making a stupid mmo that goes hundreds of years beyond revan and they never tell you his fate.  Where the hell is star wars battlefront 3 for the 360 i have been waiting forever for that.  Where is the Indiana Jones game that had san francisco as a location?  All we got was Travelers Tales Lego Indiana Jones, and the in house Force Unleashed which sucked.  Now that Lucasarts are outsourcing all their games will any good new star wars games be made.  I want another Kyle Katarn game for the PC following the last game Jedi Outcast.

We could always beg for a next gen game trilogy like the super star wars trilogy for the snes that followed the original movies.  Too bad Lucas would probably insert references to the prequels and special editions.  A game set in the real oot would be awesome though.   But to use footage from the movies in game would require using the less than stellar gout, thanks a lot george.

Lord of the Rings on Blu Ray
Time

In that Robert Harris piece the guy from disney studios he is interviewing said they used an IB technicolor print as color reference and the original animation cels.

But when he said they were completely working in the digital realm and that the work was done by Lowry, i though oh no.lol.  Their algorithms delete film grain as noise, unless they work frame by frame or properly watch the equipment and what they are doing.  If calibrated right they don't necessarily have to remove grain.  Lowry only does it at the request of their clients.

They started out with a 4k scan of the original Negative and the color tweaking and touch ups i believe were done in 2k.

The film was done of the Sucessive Exposure method and not 3 strip technicolor.  The Techirama process almost identical to 8 perf vistavision having a wider negative area. the original aspect ratio was 2:55:1.

I noticed the dvnr on the blu ray has softened the image.  Almost like they are trying to blur out the grain, and by doing so remove an integral layer of the image.

Too bad the closest to the original theatrical colors is the overly cropped 1987 CAV release on laserdisc that is severely faded.  Though the 2003 dvd is a close approximation not without its faults.

The new one is almost a completely different take on the colors in some scenes.

Maybe the grain is there on the restored film prints?

Video and film are 2 seperate things.  Maybe they are trying to please home video hdtv owners and not the elite film people who want video to look like film.

Can a Blu Ray look like a 35mm film at home?

Just wondering because it don't have an hdtv or a blu ray player myself.  If they scan in all of the image grain and all at 4k does the image look stunning at 1080P.  Some examples would be helpful to those who don't know the difference.

I always thought before Revenge of the Sith was released that Anakin would go to the dark side because he was expelled from the Jedi order for falling in love with Padme, or that he would never be accepted by them and become a jedi master.

That the other jedi reject him our of fear or jealousy over his abilities or because they believe he is dangerous, are affraid he might fall to the dark side.

In the end though things were the way they were in the movie because it was in the script.

The love trangle thing was hinted at by Lucas before he wrote the prequel scripts.  He kept it in as a subplot that palpatine used as a lie to turn anakin against obi wan, and to mistrust padme.  But cut it out.  Though it remains in the novelization.

Earlier on it was supposed to be Like the love triangle between King Arthur, Guinevere and Lancelot.  I cannot exactky remember Lucas reference early on.

Other things we did not get to see in the prequels were the good mother, and bad mother Lucas hinted at.  Ben Kenobi was the good father, and vader the bad in the ot.

We got to see something of the Knights as brothers concept.  The thing with Anakin regarding Obi wan as a surrogate father was never used in the films and only appeared in the novelization of episode II.

So in Anakin we have the son Obi Wan never was allowed to have, the Brother, and the best friend.  Is it any wonder Old Ben was like a uncle to Luke or a father figure.

Obi Wan had great admiration for Padme but only as a friend.  He never felt romantic feelings for her.

The young reader books where obi wan is a student hint at a past love he may have had but had to leave behind because it was against the rules.   Even Qui Gon supposedly felt the same.

So love and feelings to those of the opposite sex must be regular to the jedi, but like monastic types they keep themselves in check and reject the temptations of the flesh.

The Jedi were totally wrong and off base though there was nothing evil about Padme and Anakins relationship or marriage.  Having to keep it secret was their fault.  Anakin's pledge of love and devotion for padme was one of his strengths as a deep feeling emotional human being.  Anakin rejected the jedi view of attachment.  He was way more loyal and would go to hell and back to save his friends and loved ones unlike the jedi.  He was always saving Obi Wan, or trying to minimize the casualties of the troops he commanded.

Too bad most of this stuff ended up in the clone wars animated series, the novels etc, and was not shown in the films.

Lucas should have shown Anakin's finer humanity in episode II and III instead it felt rushed.

Anakin was always an outsider in the ranks of the jedi and never really was fully embraced by the brotherhood.  Their mistrust and fear led to him being feeling lost and being taken under palpatines wing and corrupted.    Obi Wan only took him on as his apprentice as a final duty to his master qui gon.  Even Yoda sensed Anakin's fear of losing those he loved in episode 1.  Obi Wan said " They all sense he is dangerous why can't you".  He was right by the way, look at how he cut down those younglings like corn stalks with his lighsaber.

When did the prequels officially suck?
Time

The thing is the issue of the Prequels is easily solved for us that like the originals just don't ever watch the dvds.  That is easy.

The not so easy part comes into play with the original trilogy because the 2004 set has been restored even with the colors messed up and is anamorphic.  You either have to watch the crappy gout quality or put up with the changes in the 2004, to me as a fan i loose on both counts and this leaves little choice.  I just don't get why Lucas cannot have the original originals side by side in the same quality as the 2004 minus the audio and color problems of course.

Yeah i have gout fanamorphic that would look better on a widescreen tv because you would not have to use the zoom function, but it still looks like crap.

Its a losing battle.  I don't know why  Ridley Scott   can give us what we want but George Lucas cannot.  If you compare the Blade Runner 5 disc standard dvd set against what Lucas has done with star wars there is no comparison.

And Negative 1 i like Plenty of Star Wars after 1983 even the prequels to a lesser degree if i consider them as EU, i like the Zahn trilogy and a lot of the expanded universe.  I just cannot abide what Lucas has done to the original trilogy, if that could be taken out of the equation if Lucas gets off his duff and gets them restored then everyone is happy.

The Special Editions and Prequels deserve a place in the star wars universe, even if a somewhat lesser role than the original films.  But to not have those films from 1977-1983 saved for future generations by a supposed film preservationist is downright retarded.

Just that imho, the Special Editions and Prequels should not replace the original movies.  The fans should be given the choice what to like, love or hate.  Lucas created the factions in the fandom by deliberately mistreating those old school fans and the films he has made way back when.

I have no problems with Kids liking the prequels, or the special editions, or the Clone Wars.  But it would not kill Lucas to do a restoration of the films. In fact they were restored in 1997 except for those scenes that were not.  It would not even take a complete restoration at this point if he wanted to be lazy just scan in those specific changed scenes and put them back in the film.

Despite what he says star wars in 1977 was a complete and finished film, the same thing with the empire strikes back in 1980, and return of the jedi in 1983.  These are the facts.

Nobody has a problem with him going back in and revisiting these movies and creating an alternate edit that is made to suit his own tastes.  The problem is denying the existance of the earlier "real" versions of the films and not allowing fans to choose.

Lucas could come out and say that Star Wars is continued growing and expanding in regard to canon, and explain away the revisionism and being just that.  And it would be fair enough if we had the oot in an enjoyable and not laughable pathetic release.

Star Wars changes were made during the making of the original trilogy, Vader became Luke's Father and Leia Luke's sister as a retcon and i'm still fine with those changes.

Wolverine: X-men origins - Trailer
Time

While i like Wolverine as a character i'm not sure they will do justice to his origins onscreen.

To me the mini series by Frank Miller and Chris Claremont which were done before Wolvie got his own comic series were the best.

Before the new X-men comic was launched that had him as a member of the team.

They got the Wolverine character in the films as close as humanly possible to the comics.  I totally buy the cigar chomping badass as he was portrayed in the x-men films.  This new movie Gets Gambit totally wrong though he looks metro and nothing like the guy who wears the trench coat and is a gambler, ladies man.

Well they messed that up in the X-men films anyways as Rogue was supposed to be Gambits girl, not Iceman.  Iceman would have been too old anyway not a teen.

That being said i would rather see X-men 4 or a redo of 3 that does justice to the first 2 films.

The second real trailer was much better than the comic con stuff, still i am getting an Incredible Hulk vibe from this and that is not good.  I mean Ang Lee's version too.

Another X-men film by Bryan Singer or just reboot the whole godamn thing since the films did zero justice to the comics for those who cared.  You know Cyclops character was ruined in the movies.  In fact the X-men trilogy could as easily been the Wolverine trilogy.

Even the actor they got to play Stryker in this film is all wrong.  I hate the way he reads his lines.

and an virtually unknown director.  The only thing they got right was the casting of Wolverine.

Well i know to comic book nerds an australian playing a canadian is bogus, but they will never be pleased with anything anyways.

Since the X-men first class went back to the classic Jack Kirby style i wonder if they would make a movie based on that. An X-men movie true to the spirit and look of the kirby books, would be fucking awesome!

Still they already ruined Silver Surfer and the fantastic four.  Some like the new take on Iron Man i still don't buy Downey as stark though.  I think the new Ironman is adequate.  I don't think it nails the comic as some seem to think, and i don't think it is the worst movie ever either.  Most of the Marvel adaptations are hit and miss.

DC got it right with Nolans take on Batman in Batman Begins.  And it works in Dark knight as well, i just don't want a dark superman because that is not what superman is.  Unless its alternate universe and Kingdom Come superman.   I would definetely pay to see that as a movie.

Don't even get me started on what JMS did to Spiderman, The killing off of Captain America and Batman= fail.

I still don't know what to think of Joss Whedon's take on X-men and how a movie based on that would be.

Yet ANOTHER DVD boxed set...*sigh*
Time

At this point i would not even take these sets if someone offered them to me free and unopened as they are a waste of the discs the movies are burned to, and the paper and cardboard used for the boxes.

You would even have a hard time making money off of selling them on ebay as almost everyone already has these who wanted them.

Seriously no fixed Blu Ray release for those 2004 saga fans, or even a restored original theatrical trilogy on dvd or blu ray for us oot purists.  Basically Lucas knows how not to please his fans.

He could write a book on how to fuck over your fan base and not give them what they want.

How many of these worthless pieces of shit do you want to bet are going to end up in landfills and being bad for the environment.  Gee you figure a liberal like Lucas would care about that, lol.

<strong>The Clone Wars</strong> (2008 animated tv series) - a general discussion thread
Time

If you hated the over the top antics and annoying voice of Jar Jar then avoid Bombad Jedi Clone Wars episode at all costs.  Seriously i wanted to throw something at my computer screen, or smash it into a thousand pieces.

And juding by the previews the show gets even more rediculous.  Seriously the next episode preview after the lair of grivious is as bad as the clone wars movie.

HaydenisnotVAder if you want to see something laughable look at the filoni commentaries on the Episodes where every one is a Lucas ass kissing fest.

George is such a genius when he did this.  lol

If you can stomach heading over to the official Lucas site they have every episode archived and you can watch the full episodes with advertisements of course.  They are only up to the episode before the last one that aired.

The sad thing is the animation in some respects is starting to get better, and is stunning for 3D stylized cgi if you like this style.  Too bad its the same prequel universe and characters we hate and not the oot characters and universe.  Probably for the best though who wants the classic characters to be handled in the same fashion of stupid writing and cringeworthy dialogue.

Not bad for generic kiddy sci fi, or EU prequel stuff for those who eat up anything remotely related to star wars.  Yeah there are spaceships, and jedi and lightsabers but it has ceased to be anything special, new or creative. On the surface it seems to be the same star wars, if you examine closer it is only a pale shadow of the greatness of the oot .   Its like a book with a really nice cover and you open it up and all the pages are blank.

Way back when untold number of years ago Lucas stopped caring and taking his fictional universes of star wars and indiana jones seriously.  Its like a nightmare of some goddamn joke.  Both series have become self parodies of themselves.  These secondary universes established rules and laws and canon have all been turned upside down.

Its no longer about writing something that would be fun to watch, a straightforward adventure story, its about turning a profit and shitting all over the only good films lucas has ever made.

Star Wars has become in a word "junK" that is mass marketed and is no longer special in any sense of the word.  It has been so far watered down from what it originally was, its like every other sci fi and comic book franchise that has been done to death.

Seriously if you told me that a 3 pretty good movies of a trilogy would lead to this i would not have believed you back in the day during the era after return of the jedi.  That Star Wars would be bled dry by Lucas for a cash cow and only a dollar maker just like star trek.  Star Wars in its purest form and sense died in 1983.

And unlike every other bloated and overdone franchise there is no retcon, recast, rewrite or reboot that can fix it the damage has already been done.  Star Wars is forever sullied and ruined by the special editions and the prequels, and the fact that we will never get the originals in an acceptable quality on dvd ever.

I would say Lucas lifetime but i bet he wrote it into his will that the original never gets restored.

The great original star wars trilogy that was in 1977-til 1983 is only now alive in our memory in pristine form. But memory is not what the heart desires and a work of art should not be thus treated.

You either except the gout and stop being a star wars fan and move on with your life, or you can get furious and waste your energy.  Since no letter writing, and no petitions will ever get that Stubborn ass of a man Lucas to cave to our whims of having the originals saved for future generations.

Or you can accept the gout and blissfully pretend the prequels and the special editions never happened and it was all a bad nightmare.

Abrams is Destroying Star Trek like Lucas has Destroyed Star Wars
Time

When JJ Left Alias and Lost in other hands the quality of the shows suffered.  Their first seasons were brilliant.

Whats to say he won't pull the same crap on star trek direct the first movie and bounce to whatever next thing he is interested in?

His biggest failure as far as i am concerned is zero fidelity to any franchise he has gotten involved in, i.e. he has too many irons in the fire.

Star Trek needs someone to take it by the reigns and steer it to new levels of greatness not just make a single teen blockbuster flick and then move onto the next thing.

His problem is the very opposite of a George Lucas who stays doing Star Wars forever.

I am of course pissed off at what he is doing to star trek, nothing it seems can last forever and nothing is sacred and the ruin of all these franchises can be tied back to Lucas or Spielberg

Star Wars ruined, Indiana Jones ruined, Transformers ruined, and now star trek.

Manny Coto was bringing Enterprise in the right direction when it became a victim of the ousting of Rick Berman and got cancelled.

You would think trekkies finally got what they wanted berman was canned but the people replacing him have even less respect for Roddenberry and Trek canon history and only see a franchise to exploit for profit.

At least Lucas was able to hold onto the rights for star wars, Roddenberrys estate has no say whatsoever in how jj changes trek to fill the coffers of the banker types at Paramount.

Making movies is a business, only the bottom line matters, the shareholders have to be placated, and whatever.  I understand at the same time they no longer care for the fans, are trying to make a new fan base and give the finger to the existing one just like Lucas did with the prequels.

If they cared the enterprise would keep with design continuity of Matt Jeffries and Andrew Probert.  Instead they got Ryan Church who worked on the star wars prequels and has nothing to do with trek, to create the abomination we now have to supposedly accept.

The Kirk, Spock and Bones are an alternate/mirror universe and not our Kirk, Spock and Bones we loved from tos and films 1-6. Since this is clearly a new universe we have no emotional attachment to these characters.  Now James Kirk is a Hayden  rebellious teen angst type . See not my star trek.

I don't believe Orci's Bullshit that the their souls supposedly are the same though their histories and everything we know about them have changed for a stupid 90210 trek jj verse.  We all know it is our experiences that have made us who we are, the same as trek's fictional characters.

I may have embraced the new batman but it was not like we had any choice after what shusucker had done to the franchise, The new bond is not my bond and neither is this Trek my Trek.  Just like the prequels and special editions are not my star wars.

I never had a connection to Batman i never read the comic, had disliked every film until batman begins.  Connery and Brosnan are the only bonds i will accept as canon.  The only true trek to me is tos, and films 1-6, and the oot of star wars is the only valid and true canon.

To me William Shatner is James Tiberious Kirk, in the same way Harrison Ford is Han Solo.  It would be Like lucas doing a recast with a Teen Han Solo without ford and changing everything we know about the star wars universe to make it all hip and modern for the teen audience.  The millenium falcon would be some flashy computerized high tech ship and not the bucket of bolts we know.

Without the Farragut, Tarsus IV.  Would James Kirk even be the James Kirk we know, my answer is no.  He said in star trek V he needed his pain, that it made him who he was.

The trailer with the new kirk was painfully too much like another movie jj's buddy tom cruise starred in, Top Gun.  I have a feeling that if cruise was not to old JJ would have cast him as Kirk.

I refuse to pay ten dollars for a cgi garbage, sci fi top gun ripoff.

Buckle Up he says on the trailer.  How about walks out of theater in disgust and demands full refund.

I'll eat my words if in some bizarre twist of fate this movie is actually good and the trailer is supposed to throw us off by thinking it is garbage.

Remember Cloverfield's trailer was a trick, and the movie was a pig in a poke.  We have to wait til 2009 to see if the same.

Terminator Salvation
Time

Don't feel so bad negative 1 they are going to Reboot Robocop as well and will hardly do it justice, lol.

You are the one who pointed out that Iron Man was a bad rip off of both the terminator and Robocop.

I was watching some of the over the top acting by Robert Downey jr and the rediculous cgi and said to myself "  i can't believe people like this garbage piece of shit movie"

I feel the same way about the dark knight despite its stylish way of filmaking, Bale's voice and performance were poorly done, but i liked Begins so i was sadly dissapointed.  Will the third film be even worse than Spider Man 3?

Was not really impressed by T4's Trailer why is this hack not Making Charlies angels 3.  Still there is no way it could be worse than T3 right.

Things don't fit t1 or t2 continuity being expalined away by " this is not the war my mother told me about" hence reboot of the future timeline.  As stupid as jj's time travel excuse for changing things in star trek.

They want to have big terminators and explosions why make it look consistant with the first 2 films, when they can screw it up just for shits and giggles and pull something right out of the Lucas playbook.

Abrams is Destroying Star Trek like Lucas has Destroyed Star Wars
Time

JJ abrams is a joke.  I cannot wait until the last episode of lost airs, when fringe is cancelled and star trek bombs so he never is allowed to direct again.

He never even stays with any show beyond a single season.  He makes popular crap entertainment, is a tv guy, a hack writer and Star Trek is something he can never do justice to.  He will never fill Gene Roddenberry's shoes in fact, he could not even replace Rick Berman.

He is nothing Like Maverick newcomer filmaker playwright and novelist Nicholas Meyer.  If i hear someone else dare make comparison of JJ to that Shakepearean Dramatist i think i might lose my lunch.

JJ's superman script is the single greatest abomination in film known to man, second only to Plan nine from outer space.  Even Lucas Prequels and Indiana Jones IV are not even in the same realm of bad.

Transformers was an Abomination written by Orci.  You had Optimus Frickin Prime saying "my bad" and bumblebee peeing on a guy wtf?

<strong>The Clone Wars</strong> (2008 animated tv series) - a general discussion thread
Time

One of the reasons he hates it is the anime Like style.  I for one love anime. and find this show despite a couple of decent episodes to be garbage. Also mainstream anime, or at least 90% of it is commercial profit making garbage and without redeeming value.  People for instance think anime and think Pokemon, when Ghost in the Shell and Akira are awesome pieces of science fiction.

For instance i loved the manga a new hope comic that won an Eisner award.  If they could do that that would have been awesome.  Or even Luke, Han and Leia in the new republic genddy style.  This clone wars is stupid because i don't like any of the characters from the prequels.  And the series has the same Lucas cringe inducing dialogue. The genndy series was truer to the oot spirit despite the rediculous mace windu taking out all those droids scene.  It was better than the 3 prequels.  Genddy made better star wars than Lucas, which is unforgivable to the bearded one.  The last person who had done so was Irvin Kershner who was not invited back to direct Return of the Jedi.

Of course Lucas is not going to be able to randomly Outsource animation to someplace in Singapore who are new at the animation thing at the new Lucas animation studio, and produce the same quality as Pixar who have more than a decade of sucessfully producing animated features.

Lucas is no Miyazaki, or disney, and Filoni is no Lasseter.

In some alternate Universe where Lucas never sold off pixar or destroyed star wars they would be making animated star wars that would be worlds better than this clone wars stuff.

Animation is able to do what you cannot do in live action film so why not push the envelope a little?  I had no problem with the genddy series because its aims were different than the live action film series.  You can get away with stuff in cgi animation that you could never do with live actors and cgi because it all looks so phony.

The animation on Clone Wars started out very poor but they have improved a bit as time has gone on taking notes on the crticisms of the wooden movement, or static characters without emotion.  Still the dialogue leaves a lot to be desired.  I for one cannot Believe that any of the dark horse comics writers participated in the writing of this crap.  As the republic comics were well written.

Still the yoda episode was Kinda cool, and so was the Artoo episode and you are missing out if you don't at least give it a try.  Sure it is a dumb kiddy show but at least attempts to make star wars fun again.  Something that was sorely lacking in the prequels.  The music, production design, and voice acting are all decent.  It is the writing that needs a little work.   Still for a show that is low budget and churns out an episode every week i think the animators deserve a little slack.

Lucas shortchanged these guys creative endevors by releasing a proof of concept pilot used to sell the series to the networks as a big screen movie.  That had fail written all over it as people expected something more like episodes 1-6 and not some dumb poorly animated pre viz attempt at a television series.  Whose animation had not yet been perfected and the storylines just sucked.   The lighsaber duels were decent.  And the banter between student and master was unberably bad as bad as the dialogue between padme and anakin in clones and sith.

Lucas needs to get rid of the yes men, and needs creative consultants who are honest and tell him something is a bad idea. The prequels would have  been such better films with collaboration from other writers and directors, and people that helped Lucas shape his ideas into something that did not betray the legacy of the original trilogy. Instead he had colleagues who no longer felt like they could be honest because Lucas had achieved "godhood status" and Rick McCallum.

Lucas deserves some Slack for the Phantom Menace as he had not directed a film in 16 years.  But he has zero excuse for Attack of the Clones or Revenge of the Sith's failings. Revenge could have been the best of the trilogy and Lucas comeback star wars performance.  But he failed miserably because the whole saga hinged on him being able to make anakin's turn to evil believable. Instead you got an unbeliablly pathetic excuse for a performance that was like a third rate comic book movie that nuked the fridge.

Maybe it is a Joke for a Director like Lucas who is not a character director and a bad actor like hayden to pull off drama based on Milton's Paradise Lost, or Sophocles Oedipus The King.  I mean you first need an actor and a director who can pull that off.  Someone Like Christopher Nolan could have done it justice.  Though i don't know who he would have cast as Anakin, hopefully not Christian Bale, lol.

Original Star Wars props sold at auction for $360,000!!!
Time

More Gary Kurtz pieces being sold with his certificate of authenticity and not that of LFL or George Lucas.

I have no way in knowing if these props are real screen used or are replicas.

Some forum said a lot of the design details don't match up.

One of the stolen darth vader sabers ended up in a museum someplace.  Who knows if any others will show up.

Supposed the sabers elstree sold where not even screen used and were less than authentic.  I don't know how this was determined since they were made by one of the prop makers who worked on return of the jedi.

The guy profiled on Unsung Heroes.

My favorite one is the one that comes apart and has a nifty green crystal inside, you know the debunked non screen used saber featured in Returning to Jedi.

Original Trilogy Soundtrack 4 CD set
Time

The Charles Gerhardt Return of the Jedi release by the National Philharmonic also has an instrumental version of the ewok celebration scene.

Without english or ewokese lyrics.

The Star Wars and Empire Releases are also excellent.  I have the Charles Gerhardt Trilogy of star wars.

The throne room and end title on star wars is a very nice rendition, better than the skywalker symphony.

The star wars themes on Star Tracks, and Time Warp by Erich Kunzel are nice as well.

I also have the Utah Symphony release that has a very moving rendition of the death of darth vader.

I also have the boston pops renditions of star wars themes but they don't come close to the LSO even under williams direction.

The only orchestra to ever come close to the LSO was the London Philharmonic on the three lord of the rings films.  But there LP from the seventies on star wars is second rate.

I don't know if your post above mentioned but some of the music from the special edition releases come from unreleased deleted scenes in the movies.  Like where luke builds his lightsaber in return of the jedi and sends the droids with their message to jabba.

The extended Luke and Ben coversation in Return of the Jedi that was shot but ended up being mostly cut because is gave too much of the prequels away.  But remains in the novelization.

Abrams is Destroying Star Trek like Lucas has Destroyed Star Wars
Time

Sounds like a very dumb and convoluted way to change things and not call it a reboot but using time travel as an excuse to change things.

If the timeline is reset by Older spock at the end of the movie and none of this stuff really happened then they have wasted 2 hours of your time for nothing and you deserve your 10 dollars back followed by getting an apology from JJ and him never being allowed to direct a movie again.

Yet ANOTHER DVD boxed set...*sigh*
Time

Is the point that the DVD would have less compression without the lego demo?  would'nt that depend on the quality of the master.  We all know the d2 master looks like shit. at least as it is displayed on the final dvd.

I mean the dvd's look like they were taken from highly circulated 35mm film prints and not from an IP or the original negative.

George had to have better sources for the movies in his collection unless this is how bad all the prints and masters look.

Robert Harris believes Lucas to have pristine elements from the 1997 restoration.

Lucas and LFL's public comments to the contrary are that every film print, master and the original negative were all badly faded and unusable. and That the o-neg was altered physically in 1997.

The only non faded color reference Lucas had for 1977's Star Wars was his Technicolor dye transfer print.  Which was unfaded but has not been scanned for dvd. This very same print had the 6 track magnetic sound as well. and is being kept locked up in his own private collection.

His kids can get it screened or watch it if they want.  But the average dvd or home theater enthusiast is stuck with the gout.

The Ultimate Star Wars Movie Viewing Room
Time

Yeah too bad it is based on the hated prequels and not something from the real trilogy which has been released as non anamorphic bonus discs.

Maybe base it on the emperors throne room in return of the jedi, lol.

Or maybe Jabba's palace complete with Han Solo in carbonite on the wall.

Perhaps a display case of lighstsaber props and replicas would be cool as well.

When did the prequels officially suck?
Time

What it comes down to is that prequel trilogy defenders will say star wars was always a kids movie series.  That it was always dumb popcorn cinema, and Lucas backs them up in this.

To be honest the oot trilogy was written better and acted better as well as directed better.  But was still popcorn films.  Nobody ever said they were arthouse cinema, or had serious themes and issues discussed in them.  These were movies like old hollywood, not serious film.  They were basically an A picture upgrade in terms in budget and effects, writing and acting of the flash gordon serials.

We as an older audience (i'm of course referring to us oot fans) are accused of Looking at the films through rose colored glasses.  That these films were overhyped and not as good as we remember them being if we sit down now as adults and attentively watch them and out them under the same microscope as the prequels.

Which i disagree with totally because the Phantom Menace and its sequels do not grab me from their opening scene and suck me into the story, Like the original trilogy or raiders of the lost ark can do even if i am viewing them for the 100th time as if it was the first time because the quality holds up after multiple viewings.  I mean if it could be quantified the originals were a hundred times more creative, original and just plain damn fun movies to watch.  The prequels are not even in the same level of quality.  seeing as there are better modern films that are more entertaining than they are, and thirty years from now no one will remember the lackluster prequels.  And the cgi will look far more dated the the effects of the oot.

The prequels for me get more boring and uninteresting with every viewing so much so that they sit on the shelf and i never feel compelled to watch them.

Cgi these days is the least of Hollywood's problems though it has allowed them to get lazy.

Movie directing is almost a joke these days, scriptwriting is worse than it has ever been.   I very much agree with anyone who thinks mediocrity and profit are synomous with Hollywood today.

Bankrupt creatively, sequels, prequels, reboots, and a slew of badly made and badly produced comic book films with an occasional gem.

That being said movies have yet to stoop to the same low as television standards have, Reality tv anyone?

Tv is Tits, Asses and Explosions and, sex and killing and more sex and killing.  It is often hard to find a narrative or story thread between those and the tv advertisements. Plus movies are the same too.  They have the flashy colors and cgi, and the Shaky cam and quick cuts in the editing.

There are a lot of films that are cool and modern and flashy, but competely lack any decernable substance other than garbage.  Dumb entertainments and twerp cinema are the name of the game, and if you refuse to turn off your brain and enjoy yourself for 2 hours and want quality, then you can go fuck yourself.  Seems to be the unspoken feeling in tinseltown these days.

Anyhow this is the way it is.  There was a golden era in sci fi and fantasy, a golden era in movies, and a golden era in the comic books and that has passed us.  The moderns can try to ape the classics all they want and fail at every turn.  The seventies and Eighties with a few exceptions were the last great era in motion pictures.  There is very little now to distinguish movies from music videos, or video games.

To me movies stopped being an artform when they got rid of traditional effects, traditional animation and Stopped using film.  The few still doing so should be commended because the Lucas types out there are going to destroy it with their great modern advances that forget storytelling and craftsmanship come first.

The one word that sums up todays movies is "disposable".  You watch and enjoy them for 2 hours and then forget them, if you can even sit through how awful most of them are or even keep you in your seat.  At lot of people talked about wanting to walk out of the prequels or Indiana Jones IV for instance.  I almost walked out of Star Trek nemesis and will probably walk out after paying to see the JJ trek film in disgust.

I felt i should have asked for my money back after seeing Indiana Jones IV, as Spielberg saying it was going to be like the other 3 movies was false advertising. The cgi and bad acting like the prequels ruined the movie for me.  Lucas has said the movies are supposed to be that way, well the george lucas who was interviewed during the making of Return of the JEdi would disagree with his current self.  He is no longer the same person.

He is the guy who is going back and ruining his own best works seeing flaws in them no one else sees.  I just wish he would stop.  He is ruining his legacy and destroying star wars.

I like to remember George for the original star wars trilogy that is currently unavailable on dvd in remotely acceptable quality, not the George Lucas who Made the Phantom Menace and other ancillary works for profit alone and for a testing ground for cgi.

Wookie Groomer's 1080p Star Wars Saga project (Released)
Time

Interesting that widescreen.org lists this:

Cinemascope - 2.35:1 to 2.55:1

This was once the most commonly used method of filming movies because its only major requirement was a special CinemaScope projector lens. This lens was and still is available at many movie theatres. CinemaScope was originally created by 20th Century Fox, but it is no longer in use in its original format.

The 2.55:1 ratio was pretty much dead by 1957 when the last holdout, Fox, adopted magoptical over mag-only prints. From that point until the early 1970s a standard of 2.35:1 was used; however, there is usually slight matting in theatres which results in a theatrical aspect ratio closer to 2.40:1. All of the Star Wars movies and even the 1997 animated version of Anastasia were filmed in CinemaScope, as were classics like The Robe and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Panavision - 2.40:1 (anamorphic) / Various (flat)

The Panavision company is now the most successful maker and distributor of lenses and filming equipment. In the 1970s their Panavision lenses became the "standard" for widescreen and non-widescreen movies. Panavision still makes or sells the lenses for most of the major studio productions today, including lenses for films made with matting as opposed to true widescreen. These matted films are not necessarily 2.40:1, but are most likely 1.85:1.

Because Panavision now represents the manufacturer and distributor more than the filming process, it is not uncommon to see that many television shows are filmed with Panavision lenses. Therefore, it is important to note that "Filmed with Panavision cameras and lenses" does not automatically constitute a widescreen process.

VistaVision - 1.66:1 / 1.85:1 / 2.0:1

This system was more flexible than others, allowing for more aspect ratios. But Paramount's specs always referenced a preferred A/R of 1.85:1. All VV prints were hard matted to around 1.66:1 to allow some flexibility in framing.

VistaVision movies were filmed with a specially designed camera that was mounted on its side. This special filming method required a special projector, but its image quality was better than standard 35mm.

Movies that are shot in VistaVision were photographed on a double-width frame of 35mm running right to left horizontally. The films were generally "reduction printed" to 35mm 4-perforated (four sprocket holes per frame) in dye-transfer Technicolor and projected with a 1.85:1 ratio. The image area was extracted optically from the full frame. For some special venues the double-frame 35mm film was cropped to 1.85:1 during projection. VistaVision movies include Vertigo, North By Northwest, and White Christmas.
