RELEASED: "Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Special Longer Version)"
Time

It will be fantastic to have the longer version in widescreen.

Especially considering no one has even ever done a preservation of the pan and scan full frame laserdisc on dvd.

Will be nice to finally have the version i like the best of the movie on dvd.

I had the laserdisc but i no longer own it.  Will most likely have to buy another rot free copy, which is hard to find.  This movie like the first star wars pan and scan clv release is a bad rotter.

The nineties re-issue is on vhs.  It may even have digital sound not sure.  Still from what i read it is taken from the same video master and is not remastered at all.

After having Laserdisc and DVD in no way can i ever go back to the crappy soft image on vhs.

I had my vcr hooked up a little while back and was astonished just how bad vhs quality is and yet for most of my life that is how i watched movies.

Too bad beta had to die as it was a better format in terms of picture quality.

Just Like SuperVHS never really took off and even the ones that came after that.  No movies were ever really available.

The Monster Squad HD2DVD By Dark Jedi, Artwork inside. (Released)
Time

this movie is officially on dvd and is in widescreen.  This preservation is no longer needed.

Why resurrect this thread?

I am suprised this site does not lock a preservation thread once the movie the presevation was preserving is officially available.

Not that darkjedis work should be forgotten or anyone should be ungrateful.

I have the original dvd.  But the movie as i said is available.

Abrams is Destroying Star Trek like Lucas has Destroyed Star Wars
Time

Well if a movie is not made for my generation as you put it, designed lazily and does not even remotely try to gain my interest then they won't get my money plain and simple and i am not alone in this.

There are plenty of the thirty something year old crowd to those in there forties or fifties that will not plunk down 10 bucks or whatever to see a teen centric film that bastardizes something they have loved all their lives long.

I am not even a trekky I am a lesser fan of the original film series and was first a fan of the original star wars trilogy and even i hate the look of this trailer.  The colors remind me of the speed racer movie that the matrix guys made.

If paramount can spend some money on restoring the old films for dvd and blu ray then i will be more than happy to watch those and forget this joke even exists.

I cannot forget the prequels and special editions of star wars because i can't watch the originals in an acceptable quality.  If i could watch them in a high quality source the special editions and prequels become a secondary issue and i can forget they exist even if they destroyed star wars credibility in the long run.

I mean i can still watch the 3 Indiana Jones films in a good quality release on dvd and don't have to watch the fourth film, or even own it.  I don't have to watch bad added cgi and hamfisted story changes that make zero sense.

Its like the 2008 clone wars movie looked like shit on film and yet the Blu Ray release is stunning because after all the movie was created entirely in the digital domain.  I bet you anything Ebert saw it on film.  If he saw the Blu Ray even he would say it is visually stunning, but that does not help the awful dialogue and nonsensically childish story.

Similarly i bet that this new trek film will wow audiences visually in imax and dlp, since it was made with zero film and only shot on hi definition video cameras.  The movie and its color palette is obviously chosen for the eventual Blu Ray release and those who have one of those TV's that has videogame like colors.  Me i like film its more natural and more real.  And if you can set up your hdtv display and watch your blu rays that way that is what i will do once i have one.

And as an anime and film enthusiast i would today if i had the money.  Even the criterion collection is going to re-issue there Kurosawa films in 1080p.  And Kino film metropolis.  The first Miyazaki film on Blu is the castle of cagliostro in japan, I bet sometime in the next couple of years Disney usa will issue the ghibli collection on blu.  Bond is slowly coming out on Blu, and star trek the tv series and movies are in the works.  Almost anything i want or can think of is coming out of course except star wars thanks to george lucas.

I also want star trek the next generation in HD but cbs digital is still waffling on doing that one.  Since the effects and edits were primarily done on video as a cost cutting and quick turnaround measure back in the days before HD and digital video were viable.  The shows were shot on 35mm panavision film supposedly but they would have to redit the shows from scratch using the studio video masters as a guide.

Unlike say the original star trek series which was all composed in the realm of 35mm film.  They went back to the original negatives which had no generations loss but did not have the old opticals saved they had to be redone.  There are 2 stories on this one is either they were in terrible shape and would show all the flaws that when they did the effects in the sixties.  The other is like most studios do the elements were dumpstered and not saved.  This is probably the real reason why the effects had to be redone.  A lot of the deleted scenes and effects stuff was sold to fans because they would have just thrown it out anyways.

I believe that George Lucas is the first person in the business to devote his own finances to Preserving the props and opticals and every piece of film used on his movies.  He had to do it because the studios would not do it and he was not going to leave the existance of all his work up to them.

This was done after return of the jedi was finished and skywalker ranch was finished.  Unfortunetely a lot of star wars props were stolen or were just plain thrown away.  Any of the sets that did not have to be reused on the sequels were also junked.  The original death star model was dumpstered when ilm moved and a dumpster diver got it and eventual it found its way to a fleamarket where a fan purchased it.

It was later resold at auction for a high price and is in that fans collection.

These peices are not seen as art because film and television is a world of mundane work and is just done for making money.  The effects houses back then in the sixties would do the set up shoot it, and it would be then torn down.  A weekly tv series was just that work to meet a deadline.  That does not say that did not have any pride in their work.

I for one wish the opticals had been saved and could have been reused on the remaster of trek since Richard Edlund worked on that show.

Yeah but the last real nintendo console in terms of a library of games worth owning first and third party was the snes.  Ever since then they have had a weak library of games if you take Mario, Zelda and Metroid out of the equation.  The wii only has about 3 games worth owning imho and they are easily beaten and then the system is as good as a paperweight, The console is a gimmick even miyamato knows it is and still does not care.

They only wanted to do something different than their competition, but there is nothing revoltionary about the wii, not graphics not gameplay zero, nothing zilch.  The only thing original is that wiimote you swing around like an imbecile.  Wii Sports gets boring rather quickly, Mario, Zelda and Metroid are easily beaten.  And the life of the gamecube console was a joke it had like no games i played either except for windwaker.

When you look at the library of games Microsoft Xbox 360 has and the devloping Library of PS3 titles nintendo is what a system for non hardcore old school gamers who were nintendos bread and butter back in the nes and snes era.  They want the soccer moms, non gamers and casual types with the wii.  All the games are non adult and kiddie in nature, mostly and lack any story movie cutscenes pre rendered HD cgi or voice acting.  The only thing they got right was the gameplay.  But damn i've played the same style of mario. zelda and metroid since i was a kid.  Would it kill nintendo to do something really revolutionary or original?

I no a lot of people who own a wii and only play the backcatalog of titles on the virtual console.  I already own those games and systems so to me instead of new games having like half their library as a backcatalog of previous systems= a Giant and major fail.

Nintendo sold out forget the gamers and went for the higest possible sales they could get by marketing to the people outside gaming.

We loaned our wii to my Nephew and even he finds the system kiddie and boring after playing mario galaxy and zelda twilight princess to death.  He goes over his friends house to play cool killing games Like Halo 3 which he should not be playing, but still games nintendo never could make being stuck in the same mindset of the eighties and only updating the graphics and consoles every few years.  While Sony and later microsoft remain on the cutting edge of gaming into the future, and the future is HD.  Even though i don't yet own an HDTV i realize this.  Nintendo put out a 20th century piece of hardware in the 2lst century and to me that is a major failure despite their sales figures.

The only piece of the console that was forward thinking was the wiimote, the console is almost the same as the gamecube.  I would like to play Twilight Princess some day in HD but nintendo decided to have one foot in the present and the other stuck in the past.  The system but not being available in an HD version is already halfway obsolete just like HD-DVD.

Blu Ray will take off in the next few years, within  ten if it is not eclipsed by an even newer format it will take over the dvd market unless it fails like Laserdisc and is only a niche market.

If that is the case then sony are a bunch of fools and nintendo are somehow genious for putting out substandard cheap hardware.

The DS has a better catalog of games at least to me being an avid Rpg fan and gamer another reason why the wii is such a failure.  Perhaps final fantasy crystal bearers will fix that if it does ever get finished, lol.  Or if they put out a real dragonquest game on the wii.

The last good nintendo console was the snes. I said sayanara to nintendo fanboyism when Square dropped ninetndo like a hot potato and went with the forward thinking sony playstation console.  Final Fantasy VII is a game nintendo wishes they could have had as a third party title, Well they got quest 64,lol.

how about if you have it already on the gamecube with a real game controller, or the ps2 and do not want a gimmicky wii mote annoyance.

Yeah the gun mini game is easier on the wii other than that and targeting enemies the game is exactly the same.

Easier if the sensor on the wii unit works properly ours never does or only does some of the time.  We have a small room and can not sit way back from the tv.

And if you have shaky hands forget the wii entirely, because games are just a nightmare.

Does the PS3 allow you to use it as a regular control without batteries with an extension like the xbox 360 does?  Nintendo elected to not allow gamers a choice in using a normal controller to play the games on the new wii console.

Buying batteries all the time or charging battery packs is a pain in the ass and is expensive.

I never cared for the skaky controller except on games that really used it as a feature and not a gimmick.  And so far what i have seen of the PS3 six axis is a gimmick just like the wiimote.

Maybe at some point a game will use its full features.  Maybe  God of War 3 will be the first i don't know.

Did metal gear 4 get the dualshock after all programmed in?

Anyways RE4 is such an old game that there won't be an HD version where the Fifth installment was designed for that.

I remember back hearing that a boycott of 5 might happen in the states because as i read the zombies are black people or something like that.  And with the voodo and black magic they were saying it was racist.

You mean to people who hated the fact that there were Aliens in Indiana Jones IV?

I would accept it in a comic book movie depending on if that was the type of material the universe was from early on and not just tacked on as a wtf? kind of ending.

A giant monster at the end for the general film going Public who had not read the graphic novel would think cloverfield and say based on that Watchmen= fail.

Not knowing that this is based off an old graphic novel.

I have heard fanboy complaints that the costumes are too shumacher batman like, or that the the guy in the trailer narrating sounds like Christian Bale's batman.

Are they going to do the old school superhero stuff in a comic noir styling?

I have read heroes ripped off watchmen,  i always thought they ripped off the X-men films by Bryan Singer and the original Kirby idea anyhow.

Star Wars: The Musical???
Time

That musically journey dvd was awesome as well as dissapointing.  Dissapointing because it brought up the fact that Sony won't put out 5.1 audio releases of the soundtracks for all six films.

DVD audio releases could have been done.

All we get are the stereo direct stream digital versions of the original trilogy as a special edition release.

Not everyone likes the prequels or the special editions and people should be able to get just the original trilogy released as two flavors the stereo or 5.1 . Oh yeah and sony has to do remasters of empire and jedi from the original sources that were discovered only after the soundtracks were already done for the special editions.

As it is star wars is the only special edition soundtrack taken from a first generation source and mixed properly.

As it is i just watched the original trilogy segments and skipped the prequels with my dvd remote.  It would be even better if a fan could put together a musical journey of the original 3 films using the gout, wait a minute i think that has already been done by editdroid with their isolated soundtracks, before the gout was released, lol.

My soundtrack collection is i listen to the sony or rca releases double disc which i own they are virtually identical.  despite the dsd encoding sony claims the discs have, they play on a regular cd player as a regular cd.  I made my own 2 disc return of the jedi from both the anthology box and the 2 disc special edition release.  I left Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back alone.  But Jedi Rocks had to be binned and so did the new end theme, although at one point i considered that as a bonus track but out it went.  I put back Lapti nek, and yub nub and tryed to sequence the tracks in film order to the best of my ability following both the lukas Kendal notes and Michael matessino's.

It is no longer on my hard disc but i also recreated the original double vinyl albums using the first cd releases of star wars and empire strikes back and the anthology set and followed the order the tracks were on the original liner notes of the LP vinyl albums.  I never did own a rip of the vinyl tracks until much later somebody on these boards posted them on demonoid but i lost them when my hard disk crashed.

I had no scanner and a way to copy those booklets so i just listened to the scores on my cd player and read the liner notes on the lp album.

Much later they supposedly reproduced the original liner notes and disc art on a cdrom bonus on the saga john williams boxset.  But i was not going to rebuy the cds again that i already had for the corellian edition cd sampler and the cdrom and new limited vader box.  So the cd's look like mini lps with the FOX labels and that rhino records label on empire strikes back.  Big deal the music was not remastered, the content was the same. Plus the new release had bad cardboard sleeves that could scratch the discs and no jewel cases.  Yes the rca releases (only on the limited sets with liner notes)  also were done this way but that is still no excuse.

The thing is who would pay 400.00 us for a laserdisc that has japan subtitles burned in.

There are loads of rips of that laserdisc floating around right?

It has never been confirmed whether or not the japan ntsc laserdisc is from a pal source.

I have heard it was uncut unlike the UK broadcast, but i am not very knowledgeable in these matters

RiffTrax does Episode IV...
Time

Even A New Hope special edition is not as bad as Clone Wars 2008 or Indiana Jones IV which deserve to be made fun of without mercy.

Films Like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Star Wars 1977 should never get the MST3K treatment.  They are too good.   Films like Cloverfield, Godzilla 1998, Transformers by Bay, and Armageddon far more deserve to be ribbed.

I also find it funny that these no talent clowns who have never made a film feel like they can make fun of George Lucas who though best years are behind him still made the oot and raiders of the lost ark.

Can i pay for a rifftrax by George lucas where he makes fun of these people for making money off of him and having no lives?

The whole thing with mystery science theater 3000 was that they were supposed to make fun of bad, or campy films that were either in the public domain or were cheap to buy the rights.

I also saw that they did rifftrax for the Dark Knight and Iron man probably the best films of 2008.  What the Ang Lee hulk or hulk remake were not available.

So i saw they did indy 4.  The Matrix sequels deserve to be ribbed but not the first film.  Lord of the rings does not deserve to be ripped to shreds despite not being in line with the books.

eragon defintely deserves to be made fun of.  But Harry Potter are well made films.  and x men 1 and 2 and spiderman 1 and 2 are good films but the third parts should be made fun of.

The prequels, they were not good star wars movies, should be made fun of.

The 2004 special editions and greedo shooting first 1997 versions of star wars should be made fun of but only the new scenes added.  The old original trilogy stuff is good imho, okay maybe the ewoks in jedi deserve ridicule on Lucas part just like Jar Jar. But to me the Worst change of all was Hayden in Return of the Jedi. Oh and of course George had to put Jar Jar saying weesa freeee!.

There is no game i am looking forward to more than Final Fantasy XIII.  and they have delayed it so many times its unbelievable.  Now the release date is christmas of 2009.

It was supposed to come out in Christmas of 2007, then in feb of 08.  Has been in development before final fantasy XII was made and released, and was originally supposed to be on the Playstation 2.

Christmas of 06 was around the last time final fantasy XII was going to be released but was out in november i think for some reason.

People have waited already almost 2 years for this game, a three year wait better make it the greatest fucking rpg ever or square enix= fail

Now the other game i am looking forward to is Mass Effect 2.  Which will probably be delayed because of that stupid mmo called the old republic.  Hey i wanted a real Kotor 3 but will settle for the mass effect trilogy to be finished if they can't make Kotor 3.  But Bioware better not fuck with the release date of the second mass effect game or pull all the developers writers and code makers off of that for this gay fucking mmo monthly fee shit.

Never was a world of warcraft type and never understood it.  The only Final Fantasy game I never bought was XI because it was a monthly fee mmo with no story and no single player console game mode.

I have a friend who is also into J-RPG's like me who says i should play StarOcean for the ps2 or play Lost Odyssey for the xbox360.  He loaned me blue dragon and i beat it within a week.  I found it rather easy which is funny because the average gamers thought it was too hard, even the reviewers said so.

Mario galaxy was too easy a platformer for me. And Zelda Twilight Princess was too easy as well even on the wii.  Most games give me zero challenge.  I even beat Halo 3 on legendary and it was a breeze for me.  Though the online matches are far more tough.

Would i find the Call of Duty Modern Warfare game challenging i wonder, does anyone recommend it?

The last Splinter Cell game i played i found more annoying than difficult, how is Metal Gear solid 4.  I loved mgs1, 2 and 3.

Has anyone played the new 007 game?

I wonder because i liked goldeneye 64, nightfire, eon, and from russia with love.

Abrams is Destroying Star Trek like Lucas has Destroyed Star Wars
Time

I am through with debating the merits or demerits of the JJ movie since the final film will speak for itself.  The picture will be locked according to JJ a few days back in about a week.

So the movie is finished and in the can and will be on hold to next summer.

Should i start a new thread about the rumored plans for a new trek tv series from cbs/paramount or should I just ask here in this thread what everyones thoughts are for a sixth tv series.

The idea they were throwing around was a far in the future dark Star Trek like Battlestar Galacticas reboot.  I'm sure it would be the entreprise F.  I heard these rumblings on trekmovie so they probably are not true and are only the site owners own fanboy dreams.

I don't even think i can find that old thread anymore anyways, lol.

I thought Ronald Moore already tried the dark thing on enterprise with allusions to the war on terror in the Xindi earth wars.  Was not that already a huge fail with the fanbase because trek is supposed to be positive and a hopeful future.  The same reason for some trek fans ds9=fail.

They supposedly even had a proposal from JMS who created Babylon 5 for a fifth tv series before they went forward with enterprise.  He already tried his dark series b5 spinoff which was cancelled in its first season.

So because Batman Begins and Dark Knight were so sucessful and because of the 90's love affair with anti heroes and darkness all movie studios and tv people are going that route.

They already tried it on the star wars prequels which was a fail.  But the original prequel story was a downer anyways.  They are doing it with the star wars novels since 1999 vector prime all the way up to the legacy novels.

and are currently doing it in the legacy star wars comics. Remember how Lucas learned his lesson that dark does not reach audiences making THX 1138 and reversed his way of thinking on graffiti and star wars.

Star Wars the original trilogy is overall positive and has traditional heroes and is more black and white right and wrong than the prequels modernistic shades of grey.

The Lord of the rings trilogy by peter jackson reached that same audience and told a story that connected with the people watching it.  Overall positive stories and an everyman the audience can relate to.

These new hollywood pics are all out to make you depressed, and are all in a state of self loathing, or loathing of humanity.  You get emo goth nihilists like Anakin Skywalker of episodes 2 and 3.

Even though JJ's Star Trek is not canon, and is designed to look different. IMHO

It still is in that Hopeful future roddenberry dreamed of, according to JJ.

He rejected going dark like Batman.  I think he said that is not what star trek is about and would not work.  People have said the same about Superman yet warners is still going forward with a dark superman in time for a christmas 2011 release date.

Fox wins the case against Warner Bros or so i read google it if you must. Heres a thread for everyone's thoughts on it.
Time

So does this mean no release of Watchmen a film i look forward to because i like the style of Sin City, but how faithful to the graphic novel will it be.

Anyway Frank Miller's Spirit is made in the comic noir styling as well but has received bad press and reviews.

I have a very bad feeling that 20th Century Fox instead of being the distributer of this film will bury it and never allow it to be released.

Then fans will never see it unless it gets leaked to the internet, and then whoever downloads that get sued by Fox and Warners.

If it never gets an official release then sadly i will never see it because torrenting movies that are supposed to be released in theaters is highly suspect and illegal.

This whole thing is funny as hell because it is just studio politics.  If 20th Century Fox wanted the movie they could have gone ahead with the project when it was originally submitted to them.  Now they have the legal right to the picture because the turnaround clause was not followed, i.e. Zack Snyders version of the film would have had to have first refusal at warners and then if they did not want it then warners could make it.

Not only that Fox now sees its shortsightedness with the ticket sales to be big money when these types of films are made.  When it was originally submitted to them in the mid nineties this type of picture would have been extremely risky.  There was nothing being made like it except perhaps the crow and that did not make tons of money like sin city did, or 300. At that point in time the most successful comic book movies were the first superman film in 1978 and the first batman film by Burton.

Comic book movies only made a certain amount of money and each sequel had reduced returns in terms of profit with the salaries of actors getting bigger on each film.

The dark knight is most successful comic book movie ever made.  Being the number 2 all time gross in terms of tickets sold and money made.  Only Titanic made more money.  i think the dark knight even beat the original star wars.

Question about the 1995 VHS and when the Special Edition was going to be the only version
Time

Yes they were fantastic looking in the theaters and i don't remember seeing Vader with a pink saber in Empire or Jedi which i saw twice.

They were restored photochemically and by hand mostly be Both YCM Labs and Pacific Title.  All color correction i believe was done in house at ilm so it is very possible the weird colors existed back then and i just did not see them in the theater.  You know no multiple viewings pause and freeze frame and all that.

Home Video and theatrical film are too very seperate things.  But whoever was in charge of checking things for the home video release really screwed up and things have not changed since then, remember the lack of quality control over the definitive collection which led to the gout dvnr debacle.

The truest to the theatrical release in terms of image quality for home video had very little to do with Lucas since it was the japan special collection carried out by 20th Century Fox Japan branch, i think Lucas just signed off early on on licensing the films to fox for foreign releases.  Or was that in the original contract between lucas and fox?  Even the first us widescreen releases were lazily taken from the same video master all they did was crop off the subtitles or white them out and try to center the picture haphazardly.

The first true us widescreen releases did not come til 1993 in the Lucas approved THX digitally mastered versions and the so called remastering was just dvnr scrubbing of the image and color correction.

These problems would have been less noticeable on vhs and laserdisc than dvd however since they have a much softer image.  The problem with dvd is early on the format reproduced every fault that was in a laserdisc or vhs transfer because of the sharper image.  And obviously if the gout looks awful on dvd how much worse would it look upscaled to blu ray resolution.

You would have to be a true home video enthusiast to know just what a middle finger the gout was to people, i have that already on laserdisc.  What i wanted was restored versions of the true theatrical releases with 5.1 mixes derived from the 6 track mixes and anamorphic like the film prints.  Instead we got a lazy re-issue of an already done transfer just dumped on the newest format.  Hell even that is only partially true since HD video was already viable in 2006, and the tenth anniversary of the dvd format was in dec of 2007.  Last year.  Lucas is such a slow poke that the 1997 special edition debut on Laserdisc in the same year as the introduction of dvd, lol.

Blu Ray has been the winner of the format wars since early this year and 20th Century Fox was an early adopter of Blu.  Yet we still have no star wars on Blu Ray.

Since Blu Ray is reaching acceptance all the tv shows and movies of the studios are not far behind, even japan is releasing its backcatalog of anime on blu.  Peter Jackson is working on the lotr release.  Again where is star wars?

Brett Ratner, what he did to X-men still pisses me off.

Bryan Singer for Superman Returns.

Sam Raimi for Spider man 3.

Still yeah i would not put them up there with the likes of Michael Bay, JJ abrams, George Lucas or Steven Spielberg who rape peoples childhood memories through the destruction of franchises.

I am sure that MCG will be next on the lower sewers of the crap list when the terminator 4 movie rapes the t1 and t2 movies all over again, but not much left after  t3.

JJ may well yet get a reprieve from the list if by some strange twist of fate the movie for trek in 2009 is actually good.  As of now the trailer is pure garbage and brings up memories of bay's transformers and the star wars prequels.  A very dire mix of shit if there ever could be garbage blockbuster type summer movies that don't meet expectations even when lowered a far as you will except as an adult for willing suspension of disbelief.

Next year will be the tenth anniversary of Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace and to celebrate we get Simon Pegg as the new Jar Jar Binks, and Ryan Church's i-prise and applestore bridge with a smallville or 90210 trek type cast.

Rank the Star Wars films
Time

This is the real star wars saga:

1977 Star Wars

1980 The Empire Strikes Back

1983 Return of the Jedi.

No abominable revionsionist crap that is not real star wars Like the 1997, or 2004 special editions or the lackluster prequels.

I had looked forward to the return of star wars after reading the Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn in the early Nineties, little did i know that lucas would cut up and butcher the negative of the original movies and bury them in replacement with inferior versions with bad cgi.  Or that the prequels would be three big steaming piles of shit, followed by worse in Indiana Jones IV, followed by the even more awfull clone wars debacle of 2008.  My Faith in Lucas ever making another good movie is long gone he has failed at least five times in that regard since the Phantom Menace in 1999.  The last good movie pre cgi overtaken all garbage was The Last Crusade in 1989.  And he did not even direct it.

Lucas will never get another dime of my money unless it be a proper restoration of the original films in theaters and on Home Video on dvd and blu ray, supervised by Robert Harris as the restorationist.   The gout in 2006 was the straw that broke the camels back as far as the original fanbase Lucas abandoned was concerned.  It was like a big Fuck you and middle finger to release a 1993 laserdisc transfer on dvd in 2006.

Lucas caused the rift in the star wars fandom between the old saga fans vs new by denying us our right to pristine copies of the original versions of the movies as consumers. By trying to force the 2004 editorial tampering of a classic down our throats.

i could somewhat stand the special editions or the prequels until he did what he did by disrespecting the movies that made him a very rich man and made us all fans.

Never mind that the actors, artists, and technicians who worked on those movies deserve better than to have them buried or released in inferior quality.  It is an absolute outrage to deny the history made by the original academy award winning trilogy and replace it with a version that did not.  It is the original versions of star wars and empire strikes back on the afi list even if lucas bars them from showing the original versions.  The updates will always be an abomination in my mind as long as he keeps up the revisionist bullshit and suppresses the original movies.

To me the wii is gimmicky garbage.  I was dying to own the supernes, the n64 and the gamecube.  But i could not care less about the wii, the wii mote pisses me off.  If i had a choice of using a traditional game controller maybe i would would feel differently on that score but the system lags behind every previous console nintendo has put out in terms of games, except maybe for Mario galaxy.  The only game the system is worth owning for and easily beaten rather quickly.  Twilight princess is also easy.  As a hardcore zelda and mario and metroid fan those games give me zero challenge.

Twilight Princess as i have said in the past was developed for the gamecube and delayed so many times it was released on both systems gamecube and wii.  Therefore since from the beginning it was not intended for the wii i don't consider it a real newly developed zelda game for the wii that is still to come, if it even does before the next console.  The wii is basically the same as the gamecube with a gimicky thing with motion sensor technology you swing around, that looks like a tv remote.

They also fail by having standard dvd technology that spins backwards like the gamecube.  But the 360 is also left behind because they did not go the Blu Ray route.  the PS3 is built like a tank and is future proof.  If it only had the game library that the 360 has it would fucking own all.

Nintendo will never put out any more epic games like , Donkey Kong Country, Conker's bad fur day or Goldenyeye, or perfect dark.  Games on Both the supernes and the nintendo 64.  Because they sold off rare to microsoft.

They sold Conkers, perfect dark.  Of course they kept the donkey kong series but did not make any more games except the horrible 64 incarnation.  and that bongos game on the gamecube.  And of course the 007 license went to however made those games on the playstation and the ports that were made for the other systems.  I think it was sony.  Now the license went to Activision.

A remake of Goldeneye 64 would have been awesome on a next gen system like the xbox 360 or the ps3.

They could have just released the original low res 480i version in 480p for the virtual console on the wii, or they could have retooled it for the wii mote to be bond's gun, lol.

I was all for a cool star wars lightsaber game on the wii, for the chance to actually use the damn thing after playing twilight princess and mario and wii sports into the ground.  Do we get a good star wars game set in the eu or even the original trilogy fillms, no of course not.  The game they promised us for years turns out to be set in the horrible prequel universe continuity with the bad clone wars cartoon and cheap crap animation like the 2008 film.

too bad the wii's version of force unleashed was a joke.  Had the system the processing power of the 360 or the PS3 along with the wiimote that could have been the lightsaber game.

Lucasfilm games aka Lucasrts is a joke now anyway they won't do a real Kotor 3 with Bioware, that would have the same customization ability and depth as mass effect.  Of course not because they will make a shit mmo with a montly subscription and set hundreds of years later.  Forget what happened to the hidden sith empire threat, or what happened to Revan in the unknown regions nobody really cared to find out the story after playing through the first 2 games. WTF?  it would be Like if Lucas made star wars and empire strikes back and just jumped 200 hundred years later for the third film without telling us what was Han Solo's fate.

Star Wars: The Musical???
Time

Anybody that thinks Jar Jar binks belongs in a musical desperately needs to be taken to the funny farm in a straightjacket.

Can they have a wooden padme and anakin love theme.

Maybe the Song George lucas raped our childhood should be in this.

What kind of silly songs will george write to replace the cgi in the films on stage.

how about 2 hours of jedi rocks looped.

When did the prequels officially suck?
Time

The prequels sucked in the second incarnation as we have them and not as originally planned.  The original prequels would have meshed well with the oot and not created a disturbance in like a hundred gaps in continuity.  The prequels made the continuity of the original trilogy like swiss cheese, or put a whole big enough in continuity to fly a death star through.

Why did George not write down those ideas in the seventies or 1983 instead of waiting til nov 1, 1994 to put pencil to paper.

Gee i don't know as a writer you maybe don't be so lazy as to wait 11 years to write down your story ideas.lol

As a director you don't give up the craft for 16 years and expect to come back on top.

It has never been confirmed but from what i have read the bullshit he gave in interviews about having episodes 1-9 all in story treatment form was a lie.

There was no pages at all written for Phantom Menace until nov 1, 1994.

The story had been in his head since the seventies, yet when the prequels were originally conceived Darth vader was not Lukes father, and Leia was not Luke's sister.  Skywalker and Vader were 2 pupils of Kenobi in the Jedi brotherhood.  Vader betrayed and murdered his fellow jedi knight.

The Prequels: Missed Opportunity #7102636892 by George Lucas
Time

Almost the entire second half of Lucas Career is a missed opportunity.

His last awesome film which he did not Direct was last crusade.

Willow was good despite the critical lynching it received.

Young Indiana Jones with Sean Patrick Flannery was good, to somewhat middle of the road.

Temple of Doom was risky and had some fine moments but overall sucked despite the unforgettable minecar sequence.

Howard the Duck despite a very attractive and likeable Lea Thompson. the movie  Sucked.

More American Graffiti despite some very fine moments also sucked.

Phantom Menace was likeable though an entirely missed opportunity because it was a half hearted attempt at the magic of the original star wars trilogy.  Still at least phantom menace was did not have a mean and nihilistic character or soulessness to it that episode II and III had.

Francis Coppola thinks we have been robbed Culturally of the George Lucas films he would have made if he had not made the first star wars.  I for 1 would not sacrifice the original Star Wars for those artsy fartsy movies nobody wants to see.

Star Wars was a natural progression From THX 1138 and American Graffiti.  Almost a trilogy of a similar theme. Kind of Like Duel, Jaws and Jurassic Park with Steven Spielberg.

Indiana Jones IV despite a couple of scenes i liked was an abomination.

Abrams is Destroying Star Trek like Lucas has Destroyed Star Wars
Time

JJ does need filmaking 101.   He is a tv producer, writer and director.   This is only his second film his last being MI3 which felt like  a tv episode and not a hollywood blockbuster.

They are giving the reigns and of a 40 year plus old franchise and the keys to the trek kingdom to a guy who does not have the background it seems to pull it off.

If they were prepping a new modern and edgy trek for tv JJ might be the right guy but a huge epic giant 200 million dollar movie?  The biggest trek film by far in terms of effects budget and scale.

Even that is doubtful because JJ never stays with any of his shows long and has had zero fidelity with any franchise he has worked on.  Seriously the guy gets bored way too easily and always has too many projects going on at once.

The last time they gave the directing chores to a non trek guy Stuart Baird we got the turd that was nemesis.  Meyer and bennet were outside guys too but i believe that was a special case.

Can JJ pull off what Nick Meyer did on a shoestring budget.  Wrath of Khan was made for something like 15 million dollars.  Look at the absurd budget JJ has.  That only makes me even more fearful they will spend tons of money on digital computer generated imagery Like lucas did on the star wars prequels which by the way were inferior in every way to the originals.

I think this film could turn out to be a fun 2 hours of entertainment as far as summer blockbusters go. Hell it could even be a damn fine movie, like my example of Casino Royale and not fit what the canon is and what the characters screen history are.

Of course i never expected it to look like the sixties tv show.  I always loved the film franchise first as that is what hooked me on Trek.  That and TNG.  I gave tos a second or third watch much later on, but as a very young kid it was too ponderous and slow and not the gee whiz, explosions and lightsaber duels of star wars.

That being said i don't want Star Trek to be anything like Star Wars than i want Star Wars to be like Star Trek.

And of Course it is impossible to expect the new movie and its actors to live up to the legendary films 1-6.  The magic of the adventures of the silver screen enterprise and her intrepid crew. Any more than people never expected the star wars prequels to live up to the original trilogy, but expected at least a middle ground on terms of quality.  Instead we got giant piles of shit with Super Epic Polished CGI.

This new film will be a type of star trek, just not the "star trek".

I am going to have to force myself to go into this film with a fresh perspective.  This star trek is a new creation, you have to forget everything you know about star trek.  Star Trek as it was died with nemesis and enterprise.  This is a rebirth starts from the beginning as if star trek was being created for the first time.  It will truly be the first time trek was "fresh" since the sixties.  As a new continuity and entirely seperate franchise entity than what was before.

The new bond does not match the continuity of the older bond films, the new batman does not match the shumacher or burton films, and the newer star wars films despite what George Lucas says do not belong in the same continuity or universe as the original star wars trilogy.  It will be the same here.

Too bad they are making the same mistake as Superman returns by having it a reboot and not a reboot at the same time.  Why can't they make up their fucking minds.  On the one hand they want the old school trekkies money by Putting Nimoy in a non canon film, almost like connery in never say never again. And on the other hand the want the average film viewer who goes out on a friday evening or saturday afternoon  to go to the movies to see this and not just the nerds who go to conventions.

George's Unaltered Prequel trilogy
Time

Sorry man.  I thought i remembered your comments in the clone wars tv thread to that effect.

If i remembered wrongly i apologise.

As for Episode 1 and how the film was shot etc.  I think it was documented somewhat by American Cinematographer and Cinefex magazines.

But David Tatterstall Cinematography really does not do the same as Gil Taylor.  I realise he researched the look of the original tatooine photography and stuff.  Not just Gil Taylor, the cinematographers on the original trilogy were just better imho.  The same with the original indiana jones trilogy.

Lucas and Spielberg got these replacement Cinematographers who were not as good, again imho.

Of course Ben Burrt is no Marcia Lucas when it comes to film editing either.

But then  again george uses the avid system as far as i know and does not edit the same anymore himself.  He does not cut film as he no longer even uses film.

You know that cutting a film used to refer to piecing together the celluloid with editors glue or cement, on a moviela or an upright KEM editing station.  I know almost all of the phantom menace was shot on 35mm motion picture film but was not physically edited.  It was digitized then edit in computers and printed back out onto film.  Thereby losing quality in the image.  Lucas could now go back to the camera oneg and get a 4k scan but i don't think he would want to spend the money on it.  Besides the edits that were done on computers would have to redone and reassemble the movie from that point.

Abrams is Destroying Star Trek like Lucas has Destroyed Star Wars
Time

Majel Graciously gave her voice to the enterprise computer in the new movie before her passing.

Majel's passing is indeed sad.  It is even sadder that the roddenberrys had no say or control over the revision of star trek by jj and paramount.

And now Rod has to grieve her passing and this year and next year see his fathers creation and vision distorted in jj trek.

The roddenberys trusted JJ, and so does every other actor who has been asked and i wonder why.

The only one i can think of that would be totally against jj and what he is doing is gene r.  and he is dead and cannot speak up.  Therefore it is to the original series fans to boycott this movie since it is not roddenberry trek.

See JJ thought if i add majel's voice then it is roddenberry trek.  Nice try JJ.

By the way i would totally pay to see a Lost or Alias movie by JJ, but Star Trek give me a fucking break man.  Totally the wrong guy for this movie.  Just like he was the wrong choice on Superman, and the studio very wisely chose Bryan Singer instead.

Wrestlecrap.com's take on The Holiday Special
Time

Modern day audiences often ask themselves could Lucas have done worse than the star wars prequels or Indiana Jones IV.  They clearly have never seen the Star Wars holiday special or Howard the Duck.

The Holiday Special was way worse than the Phantom Menace and Jar Jars antics, the original actors stumbled around in the tv special saying cringe worthy dialogue and mostly looking either bored, drunk or stoned out of their minds.

Imagine star wars episodes 7-9 with Mark, Carrie and Harrison.  With poop and fart jokes and over the top rediculously bad cgi, and wooden and throwaway characters and moments and dialogue that makes you want to vomit.

George's Unaltered Prequel trilogy
Time

You mean the color grading of the prequels should match the oot, and the original trilogies color should not have been fucked with to match the prequels as was done in 2004.  That is quite a revelation coming from someone like you Johhny.  I thought you loved lucas special editions, prequels and clone wars and that good old georgie could do no wrong in your eyes.

Someone could do a fanedit that altered the prequel colors to match the oot, but as for cuts and edits to fit the continuity of the original trilogy i don't think it is possible the prequels are a giant pile of shit.  All a fanedit can do is make the material less over the top and offensive it can not add scenes that were not shot or written.  Well you could try as some fanedits have in the past but usually the prequels you start out with even in an intent to make a trilogy as good as the oot of star wars= Epic Fail

The prequels have to be completely removed from original trilogy era saga canon.  As they would have to be entirely re-written to properly match the originals, recasted with proper actors, and have directors who are not hacks.  Also the effects and models would have had to be done old school and done to look older than the originals and fit Ralph McQuarrie's original designs in the seventies.

The prequels as we have them are a modern revision of star wars and no not fit the sagas mold from 1977-1983.  They are so far different in themes tone and feel as if set in another universe.

See that is why lucas has to recut the original trilogy constantly to fit them when it should have been the other way around the prequels should have been designed to augment the vision of the original trilogy.

If Lucas modern day alernate star wars universe is how he likes things then he should just reshoot the entire original trilogy using bad actors, bad over the top cgi and write and direct them all himself.  Though i doubt anyone would pay to see them.  Lucas has lost his fans after Indiana Jones IV and the Clone Wars movie.  Now critics and fans have zero faith he can ever make another good movie, or stop raping star wars and do a real restoration of the real trilogy instead of insisting on releasing more garbage nobody wants.

There absolutely no reason why the star wars prequels and indiana jones IV could not have been done the old school way as genre films.  The stories should have had the same magic, and the feel could have been the same.  Except Lucas abandoned his real fans to try and make a bigger profit by doing things with these movies that were not necesarry for the stories sake, but to sell them as modern blockbusters he had to put in kiddie garbage and over the top cgi.  In other words he whored out star wars to the lowest common denominator to make a buck.  This is not the film school maverick with a vision that created star wars, he is only a banker type businessman now who has to please his shareholders as chairman of Lucasfilm ltd as a corporation.

I have a huge respect for the george lucas who made the original versions of THX 1138, American Graffiti, and Star Wars.  I have no respect for the creatively bankrupt businessman techocrat he has become.  He is no longer a craftsman, filmaker or storyteller.  He has not only betrayed the essence of what made the original star wars trilogy so great, he has betrayed the person he once was.

Why is it that with 9-to 10 million dollars in 1976-77 he filmed a movie that has lasted over thirty years as a great film, a film that deserves all the hype and accolades it has received.  A film whose original cinematic theatrical version remains buried.  But with almost unlimited funds and cumputers he produced absolute unadulterated garbage with Episodes 1-3.

Star Wars 1-3 had all the epic groundbreaking technologically innovating cgi and all the bells and whistles but the heart and emotional resonance of the original trilogy was nowhere to be found in these films.
