The People VS George Lucas teaser trailer
Time

Is that kind of a fluke though?  Because Never Say Never again was utter shit.

The only movie by Kershner i have seen that was good was The Empire Strikes Back.   So i believe it was collaboration more than anything.  You see you had Lucas when he was actually still a good filmaker, Kasden when he still could write, Kersh when he could still direct and Kurtz as the producer.

Plus some of the best work of the Old ILM, John Williams Score, the actors gave good performances.  Some of the best Cinematography in the saga.  They actually put out a sequel that was better than the first film. Something that rarely happens in film.

Well it is definetely cleaner sounding, but the digital noise reduction they applied destroyed the highs but uneffected the lows in the frequency information in the digital stream.  To Remove pops and clicks and analog noise.  I would rather have the noise instead of having the music ruined.

The thing is i never noticed the difference, it is worth noting you would only notice on high end equipment which reproduces the sound exactly.  I have shitty computer speakers so its all the same to me, and not the best hearing in the world.  If this person did not do the sonogram test i would have never known, unlike say rock albums that are destroyed through the so called Loudness War.  That is the opposite problem the lows are crushed in favor of the highs and mid range freq.

Abrams is Destroying Star Trek like Lucas has Destroyed Star Wars
Time

You mean that those asshats running that fake site i got banned from are actually getting paid to help destroy Star Trek?  and they call themselves fans of Gene Roddenberry.

Like when Paramount gives out free dvd or tv boxsets to reviewers expecting a positive review to boost sales.

Me i personally like sites that give real reviews backed up with real reporting behind them and not just vapor.

Trekmovie is the same as tfn for star wars, but here for star  trek.

"TFN i hate those guys."  I say in the tone of Indiana Jones, lol.

As far as i know those TFN guys and gals or whatever they are don't get paid to help destroy star wars.   They are just George Lucas fanboy or fangirl nerds who give over every paycheck to their master for more of his table scraps.

The funniest thing of all as i have said before is that Altman aka Free Enterprise is the guy who coined the "George Lucas raped our childhood" phrase is a guy on staff at trekmovie.com.

Here is a guy who in 1997 and 1999 went out of his way to redicule George Lucas for destroying his own creation but now is Cheerleading Somebody else on to change as much as possible as gene roddenberry's.

But then again he said he was not a Roddenberry fan but a Meyer fan.  You know the guy who took the film series away from Roddenberry with Paramounts approval.  Years later Paramount made up to Roddenberry for taking away the film series from him and cancelling the original show by allowing him  free reign on a second television series which became the next generation.

Gene R. passed away and Berman took over the entire franchise running it like Michael Eisner ran Disney.

The family had no say whatsoever in what they did to Gene's creation because he gave all his rights away to get the damn thing made in the first place.  Unlike Lucas who controls all things star wars and does not have to worry about someone else coming in and raping his franchise.

Michael Piller was one of the people who was true to gene's vision and did great things for the next generation, (except Insurrection which most fans hate) While Berman, Bragga and Moore ran it into the ground.

Even though i enjoyed Berman's derivative trek based on the creation of roddenberry Like His seasons of star trek the next generation, deep space nine, voyager and enterprise.  My favorite because of its classic coolness and nostalgia value is the original series mainly the first 2 seasons.  Season 3 despite a couple of memorable episodes was absolute cheese in competition with lost in space.

I like how in the remaster They cleaned up the live action footage from the original camera negative but hate the new CGI.  The upcoming Blu RAy release solves that through branching the old opticals with the cleaned up footage.

Just saw my first "non Star Wars" movie starring Hayden Christensen
Time

Don't forget Samuel L. Jackson was in Jumper too. Remember when he had street cred after being in Pulp Fiction?

Look at his awful perfromances in the prequels, jumper, etc.

Jumper was one of the worst films i have literally ever seen. and Awake was not any better.  So Hayden was decent in Life as a house and shattered glass.  The reason he was recommended to George was the Virgin Suicides by Sophia Coppola who just so happens to be George Lucas goddaughter.

That Dawsons Creek actor Jonathan Jackson was considered but i don't think he was ever even tested on a screen test.  And since Lucasfilms had a problem in the Past with getting Tom Selleck out of a contract to play Indiana Jones, i don't think they wanted to go through that Again with Him.

Besides they were Looking for that sullen, whiny quality which Hayden has in spades.

The original trilogies cast ended up with What Three Possible Ensemble Combinations.  But the Prequels could not be cast this way because anakin was a kid in episode 1, Else they would have had Hayden in all three, lol.  2 is more than enough, never mind putting him into Return of the Jedi.

He is right though.  They had the scale right in the original motion picture series.  JJ is more likely going for the coruscant prequel look here with these overscale buildings, and it is just silly.  Then again almost every design from this movie is bloated, wonky and ugly where a more simple approach and beauty of the older films would have looked better imho.

Ryan Church worked on Star Wars Episode II and III.  you want to talk about films being poorly designed, and yet he gets to revise the trek universe, lol.

Flashy and bright cartoon esque cgi versus the scale and realism brought by the aged universe of the old school models.  The thing is Lucas betrayed his original design sense that they were not going for a bright and flashy shiny spaceships or overdone costumes look.  and what did he do in the prequels what he original said was bad for the star wars universe.  In fact what he said was wrong with other big budget sci fi films.

And Here JJ is doing the same.  Roddenberrys unique vision is about humanity, idealism and the characters and exploring new worlds.  Not explosions, rampant militarism and special effects, or defects as i will now call them in this film.  Star Trek was about peaceful exploration.  This jjverse is a lot like that alternate timeline in the next generation in yesterdays enterprise where the vessel Enterprise D was a vessel of war and not  of exploration.

Not everybody is redeemed the Emperor was beyond redemption, so was Exar Kun, darth Maul and Darth Bane. and a character who dies at the end of the legacy series.Callista never came back from the darkside.

Ulic Qel Droma was redeemed, so was revan.  Luke Skywalker came back from the darkside just Like Anakin Skywalker did.  Cam Solusar came back, Zekk, Mara Jade.  Kyle katarn. Kyp durron. Bastila Shan.  Lots more probably.

I think its more shades of grey really even though that is not how star wars was originally conceived.  Things are not so clean cut between light and dark.  The Force is not constrained into the narrow dogma of the Jedi, despite their being keepers of the peace and mostly Ethical beings.  I think Yoda and Kenobi where wrong they thought Vader was beyond redemption.  The old ways that bound the jedi like not being able to Love or have a family or children were their undoing.  The foundation of the New Jedi order under Luke came about because Luke believed in the good in his father and forged a respect for the man He once was and not the man he became, he reached out to that one last spark of light.  That was Anakin Skywalker in Darth Vader.  The emporor also thought Vader beyond rememption just like Ben and Yoda.

I think the model photography from the motion picture holds up very way today, certainly better than the cgi from the new film will look in even five years time.

Because from a design standpoint they did it right, Probert who designed the Refit Enterprise 1701 with the help of Richard Edlund and others.  And then John Dykstra and crew filmed them.

Probert was very conscious of keeping Jefferies design in mind while at the same time making a model whose scale would work for the big screen and not tv.  The original tv model was in the smithsonian and was not useable in any case and the phase II model that was already half completed was also unusable because it was built for a tv production.

The enterprise from the first film is still considered breathtaking even today, but a good deal of that is because of the weight and scale of the model gives you a sense of reality, and nobody can replace Jerry Goldsmith either.  That would be as absurd as getting someone else other than John Williams to do the music for star wars.

No Matter what to me this is like the prequels complete modern bullshit.  Not Shot on film, 90% green screen, blue screen and cgi.  No real models.  Made to Look action packed sexy and flashy but lacking any substance.

I  saw City on the Edge of Forever the other day and was amazed how great good star trek can be, that reminded me and so does some of the movies from the 1-6 years.  First Contact was a good action flick, which only had any Gravitas because of Patrick Stewart.  But this new movie lacks even that.  As much as i like Bruce Greenfield.

The new movie Lacks any well knowns or any big name caliber actors.  Unless you consider a guy who had his day in the sun, Bana as a big name.

Trek II had Ricardo montalban as Khan.  VI had Christopher Plummer as General Chang.

III had Christopher LLoyd a poor choice in my mind, and Anyway hes cemented into peoples minds as doc brown from back to the future, lol.

VII had Malcolm McDowell in an entirely wasted role.

Maybe if the script was better on nemesis and they had a competant director, and had Patrick Stewart play Shinzon as well as Picard the film would have been. Better.

What Trek II undertstood that the first film lacked was that you had to have a Villain to play the hero off of.  It also understood that the relationships between the characters was more important than the spaceships or the effects.  It dealt with the concept of Death and age.  The characters were not carboard cutouts or made to be a joke.  There were no Jar Jar like lines "I like this ship it's exciting".

Meyer as a dramatist and Stage writer new the story should focus on all the emotions of the human condition.  Even considering that one of the characters was half human and logical and kept his emotion in check.

I'm not sorry to point this out that this movie is trying to remake wrath of Khan and the Star Wars series all in one.  Nero is another Khan ripoff just like Shinzon, and if the Rumor is true that Nimoys spock dies in this movie to save the characters of the Alternate trek verse it should be banned.

No the comic with Vaders secret apprentice is the force unleashed based on the videogame.  The one i am talking about features his Jedi apprentice Ahsoka Tano during the clone wars when he trains her in the ways of the force.  Based on the Cartoon Network series.

and by Manga i mean japanese comic, too bad it was flopped as a mirror image by Dark Horse Comics.  I have spent years trying to find the Media works japan release.

They adapted everything but Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. in terms of the six star wars films.  Phantom Menace by Asamiya was very bizarre however almost like a cartoon rather than an anime or manga.

Do you think the color problems in the 1997 special edition have anything to do with how several faded the negative was.  I know they did a complete photo chemical restoration.  This was done by Pacific Title and YCM labs.  The final color was done by matching it to a technicolor 3 strip dye transfer print in Lucas private collection.

Until someone gets there hands on a 35mm print of the special edition the color problem only being a symptom of the home videos releases will never be solved or proven.

The gout  colors are so washed out im not even sure they are a proper source for saying this is how the films should look and looked in cinemas way back when.  Especially when you consider the DVNR.

I think the colors on the japan special collection are more acurate.  Too bad the image is soft and interlaced and is from a grainy old master again with washed out colors several generations away from the original.

I forgot to mention the Star Wars manga.   That was some great EU.  Yeah it was based on Lucas screenplay but not strictly canon.  The first one was the best the one that won the eisner award.  I believe just like the films every different one was done by someone else.  To me Return of the Jedi was the weakest out of all three, because of the style used on that one.

I also wish like the star wars adaptation by Barreta there was no special edition stuff in there.

You know whats good out there now is the Legacy comics and the Kotor comics.  But if you did not read them starting with issue 0 you would be lost in terms of plot, they are not like a serial that you can pick up a random issue that is a standalone and each part has an arc to it.

The cover art for the Clone Wars comic is usualy very good.  Too bad i can't say the same for the interior art which is also good but not as good.  The weakest links are the dialogue and plot just like the movie or cartoon series.  You can only hear Artooie or Skyguy so many times.  So the first time was not funny so they figure by the 100th time you will be rolling on the floor laughing right, wrong.  Oh by the way this is the adult comic line and not the junior graphic novel one.

Forgive me for saying this but i like that the stories are written by someone other than Lucas.

The only Author who created a character who could hold his or her own with the film characters is Timothy Zahn and his creation Mara Jade.  It was genious to create a character that was a contrast to Luke and someone he could be played off of.  You know since Leia turned out to be his siter and ended up with Han Solo.

Thrawn was also a brilliant creation.

Some EU stuff not so good like superweapon of the week type plots etc.  Or Prequel rehash via the legacy novels.

Also they felt the need to make star wars less of an escapist fantasy and more dark gritty and real putting in characters dieing since Vector Prime.  Major Characters not throw away one like General madine.

Also the more Jedi and Sith there are the less cool and less mysterious they are and the more rediculous things they can do.  See the Genddy series or force unleashed, or the prequels, new clone wars cartoons.

Jedi become more run of the mill than being mythic.

Nothing at all in terms of content.  Except the sony have something called direct stream digital encoding, but i did not notice a difference.

If you ran them through a program to show you there wave forms i don't know if they would be different.

plus as far as i know these CD's are not effected and infected with the sony rootkits even though the disks claim to be copy protected they don't seem to be. They rip just fine from what i have read.

Still don't trust Sony CD's because of the rootkit fiasco.  Besides my anthology box got a lot more play in my cd player.  The star wars 2 disc Rca is tops but the empire strikes back and return of the jedi have numerous problems that only someone as well versed as goodmusician could explain.

An interesting thread from Blu-Ray.com (no Blu-Rays yet)

If the Blu RAys are really coming out in 2012, what stupidity they flood the market with useless dvd re-releases and then make people wait til they no longer care.  Also the HDTV bootlegs that people have are out there.  Way to go lucas he is making a great market for those scam artists and ripoffs who will take advantage of the fact people want these movies now in the best resolution they can get them for their HDTV.

I don't know the facts here but is it at all possible that Lucas has given these HD broadcast networks exclusivety for the moment, or is he still waiting for digital download of 50 gig blu ray like streaming content, lol.

You think that is bad vaderisnot hayden how about how Old Obi wan is in what is now called Episode IV vs how old he is in revenge of the Sith.

I mean Obi would be what only in his fifties and Alec Guiness looks nowhere near in his fifties.

I guess Lucas just hoped people would not notice the twenty year mistake he made in star wars revision in the prequels.  as it is to remain consistant he would have to do a lot more than just add a few more scenes to the original trilogy it has to be completely rewritten and reshot, lol. All of this could have been ovoided if he only followed the original outline he wrote in the 70's and probably revised all the way up until return of the jedi.

So... The Clone Wars "movie"...
Time

It is true that in this Clone Wars animated tv show Anakin is shown as less of a selfish prick and it shows him fighting side by side with the clone troopers, It shows he has to do some growing up because he is now a teacher of a young spirited jedi who does not follow the rules. Of course that is the idea of this show to turn things on their head, Ahsoka Tano is like a female version of young Anakin.   That is why she was paired up with him instead of Obi Wan or some other Jedi.

In fact this i would not go so far to say that this anakin is more in line with the Anakin in Return of the Jedi, but he is more in line with the Anakin in the Dark Horse comics and the Del Rey novels and is a more human and understandable character.  See if Anakin was more loving to Padme in the prequels, more human as a character you see he loves her and it pains him to be away from her on the fields of battle.  He hates seeing his friends killed in combat , etc.  Instead of being the little bastard demon he is in the movies who you wish burned up on Mustafar.

His character which started out fine in the Phantom Menace imho was entirely misshandled in Attack of the Clones.  But most of my problems come with his portrayal in revenge of the sith.  The plot is extremely convoluted and rushed and patheticaly week when out of sympathy at the end of the film you should be on the verge of tears when Anakin falls to the darkside.  Instead you wish the little asswhole met his end on Mustafar.  You care little about his redemption or even about his downfall.  As Lucas wrote him I hate the character of anakin skywalker, i loathe him.  He is no fallen saint or angel as portrayed in the oot.  In fact the story of episode II and III pretty much lays it out that the duality of Anakin/Vader are one and the same.

He was never a good man who turned Bad.  He begins as a selfish Teenager and ends his life as an Adult as a selfish tyrant with the blood of billions on his hands, but because he saved his son he deserved redemption, lol.

As it turns out the saga is pathetic and laughably bad.  Billions are butchered and Killed because Kenobi and Yoda put all their faith and trust in a single person.  Because of some dumb prophecy.

All the history of conflict and suffering in the gffa is because of rival sects of a relgious cult of shamans with godlike powers who act anything but.  They are basically fallen mortals with these powers that make them dangerous to ordinary humans.   They are more like the petty gods or demi gods of ancient Earth mythology like the greeks.

Its no wonder in some of the EU novels regular people have come to a consenus that a galaxy without sith or jedi would be a better place.

If you buy into any of the EU after Return of the Jedi a hundred and something years later in the legacy comics a new Empire is born.  The Jedi  are all but wiped out and the sith are resurgent and are a new sith empire.  There are sith , jedi knights and Imperial knights three factions of force wielders.  The Empire is ruled by the imperial fel family who are not jedi but are strong in the force.  And once again the fate of the Galaxy rests on the shoulders of a man called Skywalker.

Basically the EU does not count though because the Empire falls in Return of the Jedi and the Sith are extinguished for good because Vader brought balance to the force by killing the Emperor.

Even though Luke becomes a Jedi Knight and is supposed to you would at least guess reestablish the order, Jedi are no longer needed because the galaxy is at peace.  Heroes are no longer needed.  There is no story there.

This movie should have had its own category created for a razzie award.  Worst Animated Feature of 2008.  I predicted Early on that Wall E would win best animated feature at the oscars.  No negative 1 went on about how it was the worst animated feature ever and clone wars was the best thing ever, lol.

By the Way i don't think Wall E was the best animated feature of 2008, i believe that should have gone to Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki.  I will agree that it was the best American animated film.

Clone Wars is clearly an Embarassment of a Movie even for the director.  The TV movie he made for the Last Airbender was better.

I was reading a quote from Rick Mcallum on the live action tv show and he said ""It’s about who’s talented, who’s got the strength to challenge George"  lol.  Talking about hiring writers and directors.

Funny the yes men who did not have the strength to challenge George are the whole reason we have the prequel films we got.  If george brought in oustide writers and dirctors and gave them a general outline but free reign rather than having an iron clad grip over star wars to its utter ruin where would the sagas legacy be now, probably a lot better off.

I mean come on you got a film giant like Spielberg who faced down Lucas over the bad crap in Indiana Jones IV and the Stubborn bearded one ultimetely won.  Lucas called it a compromise i call it ruining Spielberg's film.

This dude is the last person i would ever want to collaborate with if i was in the film business, whereas the old Lucas from back in the day you would have wanted to collabrate with or get his help on a project.

Does Gary Kurtz  gets too much credit or not enough credit for being the producer of Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back.  Howard Kazanjian took over for Return of the Jedi.  And then we got the Young Indy producer for the prequels, god i won't even say the guys name. To Howards credit despite people thinking he would fail he did a great job on Raiders and a somewhat okay job on Jedi though Rotj is like the greatest film ever made comapared to those crap films starting in 1999.

Which did you prefer, the SE or the 2004 DVD edition?
Time

The Jabba scene was better on the 2004 release but it is still redundant all the information it conveys is already there in the original Han in the Cantina scene.

I don't know which is worse the Greedo scene shooting in the 1997 or 2004 but wish it was put back to its original form from 1997, okay maybe they could have added a greedo in a reshoot that looks less fake.  Still Han should be the only one who shoots.

Jedi 2004 was the worst to me Jar Jar and Hayden.

Empire was no better either replacing the better original emperor and the better original Boba Fett's voice, better vader dialogue between the emperor and vader in the 1980 release.

There are some changes, fixes and augments of effects i can undertstand but 90% of the changes just seem unesscessary in my honest opinion.  It was a testbed really for the prequels in 1997 and that is the only reason playstation one era video game effects made their way into the movies.  The 2004 release was another not necessary joke of an edit to try and fix those Continuity errors Lucas made with the prequels and there are still things he did not address.  But ruining perfectly good films to fix terrible to mediocre films is a crime against taste and filmaking in general.

There is also an error i believe in revisiting one's younger works be it as a filmaker or novelist and trying to "fix them"  instead of Moving on and making new things for the world to enjoy.  In fact the unspoken belief amongst average joes is that Lucas has some bizarre compulsion to make his films perfect.  They never are complete or good films to him, yet he butchers them when he already had an audience that loved them just they whey they were.

To me more power to Lucas he can do fifty edits for all i care as long as the original versions are available in good quality up to todays standards.  It is kinda childish to force people to watch a version of the movie they love and turn it into hate instead of giving them the version they saw growing up.

Those who grow up with the 1997 and 2004 should have those preserved as well. but the 1970's and 1980's versions should be preserved for all time as well.

Just think of the money Lucas is throwing away by not having a Blu Ray boxset with the 2004 versions and 1997 versions in 1080P and the originals in restored at 4k for live action and 6 k for the vistavision processed effects, then mastered down to 1080p.

And of course he could release just the originals seperately restored on dvd and blu ray for those of us who will never spend a dime on the versions we don't want or already have many times over in our collections.

Wow this hate the special editions is twelve years in the making, lol.  Seriously those who have wasted their lives wiating for a restored oot should just accept the gout and move on?  that is pretty much what has happened for me.  Still lampooning the general weird love/hate relationship people have of this once great film franchise its creator and companies is a little too much fun.

Abrams is Destroying Star Trek like Lucas has Destroyed Star Wars
Time

Hunter6 you are forgetting that this is a reboot, or reimagining of star trek as if the world is seeing it for the very first time.  They had to do away with 40 plus years of continuity because it was baggage as far as creativity goes, or at least that is what i Get from JJ.

Yes it is confusing that i still has links to the next generation and original trek via Nero and Older Spock.

They want it to be a reboot and continuation of the original series at the same time, i would just as soon they reimagined the entire thing.

William Shatner is an actor, James T Kirk is a fictitious character and is not real.  Therefore they can and did get a younger actor to play him.  You don't seriously think they are going to make a 150 million dollar movie following the surviving original cast who are in there sixties and seventies?  That is as ludicrous as a sixty year old Harrison Ford playing Indiana Jones and surviving the stuff he survives in crystal skulll.

This is the beginning of Universe B.  Universe A becomes universe B by Neros tampering with the timeline.  A lame excuse for continuity reset but i don't know what i would have done in JJ's shoes.  The thing is people are saying JJ is ruining star trek and this is terrible but nobody is offering any alternatives or ideas.  And i mean for a healthy and vibrant alive resurgent franchise Like the Original Motion Picture did for trek, or trek II that is arguable.  What we don't need is for Roddenberry Pastiche up on the big screen aka James Cawley and Phase II with bad trying to sound like William Shatner.

Shatner has worked with Chris Pines father and has given his blessing to chris there is no animosity there.  Only that Shatner is now sorry he turned down a cameo role because he wanted the starring role.

Yes they are doing the James Dean Rebel without a cause type character again for Kirk, just like was done for Anakin in the star wars prequels and mutt in indiana jones IV.  Shia also played a rebel in i robot and in transformers though not necessarily of the james dean mold.

One of the original inspirations for the space Pirate  Han Solo was James Dean.  If done well it could work out well.  And Haydens screentest was better than his own screen performance so there is plenty of blame to go around namely a certain mr lucas who can't direct actors.

In the orci comics supposedly Romulas is destroyed so to get revenge Nero blows up Vulcan.  Seeing the blown up planet in the trailer a bit too much like the death star and Alderaan.  and Enterprise already ripped off star wars with the Xindi superweapon.  So JJ is now copying copies.

So like Nero tries to Change the destiny of Kirk.  But even though Tarsis IV and Kodoss the excutioner do not happen nor the farrugut missions, history still takes the same course and James Kirk still comes out a great man.  I wonder if this is Orci and JJ idea?

Blu-ray prices not coming down
Time

As far as i know the HD Phantom Menace being shown on tv was put through a digital video noise reduction process by Lucas to look that way.  Not a lot to recommend there as it removes fine detail.

Then there are other considerations the way the film shot, the lighting and the grain level of the stock used.

It is entirely possible Lucas used a low grain stock and Lenses that give it that video look.

They did not use the same cameras or lenses or cinematographers on the new movies.

Phantom Menace will continue to look like shit because the digital intermediate used back in 1999 vs the kind of scan Lucas could now do of the original camera negative at 4k a joke.  They are claiming a 2k was done back then.  Then edited on video by computer.  one generation less than the original photography.

The Special Editions master was only 1080P according to Lowry.  Lucas never even comissioned a new scan.  1080P to Lucas is good enough for video.
