You got that right the only way they celebrated the 30th Anniversary Of Star Wars was with the Force Unleashed.  No Restored oot to celebrate.  Even if Star Wars 77 was only restored for it's 30th anniversary that would have been a big deal.

20th Anniversary saw the release of the special edition versions of the original trilogy in 1997.

I can clearly remember seeing the trailer when i went to see Star Trek First contact .

The 10th anniversary i think was a vhs box set.  Plus a starlog magazine that celebrated ten years of star wars. I have mine signed by the Bearded one himself.  From a former person who worked for the magazine.

Unfortunately i never met Lucas.

Also i think 1987 was the opening of star tours?

Do you think George Lucas will correct the colors for the blu-ray release?
Time

What about the HD broadcasts i know they suffered from the same bad color timing.  But they did not have the compression issue i believe had a sharper picture with more film grain in evidence.

Do the crushed blacks still exist on the HD.  I figured it would be less a problem then on a DVD.  Unless the master handed off to Lowry was fucked to begin with.

From what i heard ILM did their own in house color correction prior to handing over the masters to Lowry.  These color timings supposedly were submitted for final approval to George Lucas and fit his exact instructions for the films.  Lowry just did the cleanup process and that is what they were hired for. They digitally removed dirt and restored broken frames on the movies.

I think it has not been revealed but Lucas had an undisclosed company make scans of the 1997 altered o-negs of the trilogy and only in 1080P.  This was most likely done before the age of 2k, 4k, or 6 k scanning.

They were either the negatives or the master created to print off the theatrical releases of the special editions.

These masters for the dvd were handed over to Lowry on hardrives stored in RGB format whatever that means. At least that is what i recall reading.

I also remember discussion from the X-0 Project on working in RGB colorspace.  Does anyone know what this is.  I googled RGB and apparently it is like the YCM of analog film but worked as data instead.

I'm not talking about fans i'm talking about the literature on a university level.

Matrix is stylized.  It is a mix of kung foo and anime like themes.  Ghost in the shell, and Akira have been compared to the Matrix.

Michael Drout teaches a class at Wheaton College (no not the one in illinois) on Science Fiction Literature and their is a whole unit devoted to cyber punk in films and literature.

I'm sure other Universities have taught similar courses.

Drout's class i would say is unorthodox however because he also teaches a course on fantasy and J.R.R. Tolkien.  The literary elite have done their best to keep Tolkien off the Syllabus on the university level because he was a linguist, and a fantacist and not the proper kind of thing to teach.  They only wanted realism expressed and did not want to add fantasy.  They slowly added Science Fiction and Fantasy and resisted it all the way as literature proper to the student.

Supposedly the bravado that the Kirk character had on the original series came from the fact that Shatner played Alexander the great in a stage play.  According to Shatner of course, lol.

Roddenberry said he was typed as "Horatio Hornblower in outer space".

Leonard Rosenman's score for Trek IV is a bit too much like his score for lord of the rings by Bakshi.  It borrows heavily from it.  The leitmotif of the opening theme is nearly identical.

Horner always borrows from earlier scores he has worked on as well. Even John Williams does it.

Goldsmith generally composed wholly new soundtracks except for reusing Alexander Courage melodies, The title of the motion picture and the theme of the enterprise.

Spock had his own theme in Horner's score for Trek III and trek II.  As far as i can tell Capatain Kirk never had his own theme.  Nor did most of the characters.  It was John Williams in Star Wars who had themes for the different characters.  In Star Trek the Enterprise itself had themes written for it.

From what i read the new Score for 2009 tried to have a themic unity and a character theme for kirk.  I believe they thought of Williams more than they did Goldsmith, or Horner.

Usually these types of films have a heroic theme or march for the good guys, and an evil theme for the bad guys.  Khan for instance had his own theme, and the Kilingons got a theme in the motion picture though there they were not the evil presence in the film.

The first Matrix is considered a sci fi masterpiece of cyber punk and film noir like Blade Runner.  The others were Jaw dropping awful films like superhero flicks.  With allusions to Christianity and Philosophy.  The door was left open for a Matrix IV were Neo gets rersurrected mirroring the christ story but the directors writers were not interested in pursuing it even with potential for tons more money.

If Lucas Made an Indiana Jones V or VI would anyone here see them ?
Time

Comments, thoughts anyone?

Should he and Spielberg make them?

Whether you loved Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, or thought it left a lot to be desired.

Should he create and have Spielberg Direct  a Mutt Jones series trilogy?  Lol just had to ask.

Personally i think IV was the last one and Lucas is just having delusions of grandeur like when he was going to make twelve or nine star wars episodes.

Spielberg Taking a year off in between Indy IV and his next film while producing other peoples films.  His schedule is solidly booked to at least what 2012-2013.  This even after dropping Jurassic Park IV.

He has gone on to produce way more movies than Lucas ever has.  I think its possible he had his hand in more hit films than Lucas as well.

George never had a wife around like Spielberg did while he was working however. He decided to take that 16 year directing break while remaining a producer.  Unlike Spielberg, Lucas was a single father of 3.

I think Kate Capshaw as a mom and wife deserves more credit than she gets like most women behind strong and powerful men.  She deserves a bit of credit for balancing Steven out allowing him to continue doing what he loves to do.  Though she was annoying in the Temple of Doom.

Lucas and Spielberg have different talents, strength and weaknesses when it comes to making movies.

Lucas will be busy with the live action tv series and the continuing clone wars cartoon series.

How about an animated 3D Indiana Jones.  Though that would be tough without a Ford sound alike.

Technically there is nothing wrong with the Scripts to the Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.  But they sure as hell could have used better dialogue.

The Revenge of the Sith Script to me is the one that needed a whole lot more work.  Anakin's turn to the darkside and the believability of it were poorly done.  Also the dialogue needed some work to make it less laughable and cringe worthy.  The romance scenes in II and III either needed to be trimmed or made more heartfelt than wooden and inept, to downright creepy.

For an add on Jedi character in Phantom Menace Qui Gon was not bad.  Obi Wan was alone in the early drafts.  He probably had YODA as a teacher.

Mace Windu goes all the way back to the journal of the whills outline and then was known as Mace Windy.  Which was corrupted by typescripts made form Lucas handwritten drafts into Mace  Windu.  Which to me is the only obvious conclusion unless Dale Pollock in Skywalking got the spelling wrong.  But the scripts at the Jedi Bendu Script site and i think also the annotated scripts say mace windu. Weird.

Also they should have had a twenty year old Boba Fett in episode III and no Jango in II.

We should thank our lucky stars young han solo did not make his way into revenge of the sith.  Are all the children characters in the star wars galaxy orphaned or had their parents killed.

It was bad enough that yoda and chewie were best pals.

It was also laughable that yoda was made the surpreme and master swordsman in episodes II and III and ironically a great warrior.  He tells luke in empire strikes back "wars don't make one great".

I have always been Partial to time travel stories in science fiction and Star Trek in general.

One of my favorites is of course Back to the Future.  I also love the voyage home but the movie is very dated now.

The City on the Edge of forever written by Harlan Ellison is also one of my fave trek episodes.

Also yesterdays enterprise and all good things.

I also liked first contact though a lot of people said then it was a dumbing down of star trek.

Which the naysayers still claim about the Wrath of Khan.

Plus lets remember its not like they are coming to my house to take away my dvd and laserdisc copies of the older movies.  Have not got into Blu Ray yet.  I hope the restored star trek II is released seperately.

This is my take on the new movie at the moment.

Would the fact that the screenwriters referenced quantum theory allow for trek to be a multiverse?

I mean You have the mirror universe and different quantum realities. But here the time travel actually changes the prime universe of tos.

Even though it refers to techno babble of temporal paradox does not change the fact in my mind the original timeline is still Intact if you consider this an alternate excursion and branching off of the original series.

I'm going with the multiverse take and IDIC. Infinite Diversity IN Infinite Combinations. Allows them to write their own version of treks fictional history without destroying or erasing 40+ years of continuity.

There are still things i don't like about this movie, I find Pine's Kirk to be obnoxious and a Jerk.  I find the James Dean Rebel archetype has been used far too many times.  Hayden Christensen as Anakin in the star wars prequels for one example.

Let me try and list things i like about the movie:

-Zoe Saldana as Uhura

-Big Budget special effects

-A new unique fresh take on the franchise.  Like When Nick Meyer directed Wrath of Khan.

-The fact that the actors are allowed to believably grow into their roles in the film.  The second film will be much easier.  The First film was a setup and leaves room for more Trekking.

- I found Simon Pegg as scotty to be funny.  The worry that he was the new jar jar was unfounded.

- Karl Urban as Dr Leonard "Bones" MCcoy.

- The New Enterprise takes a while to get used to but is created lovingly in CGI by ILM.

- JJ Abrams for having the courage to dare to make a break from 40 years of canon so they have limitless possibilties in the future of where they take this franchise.

- JJ Abrams also for not producing a film as Bad as the star wars prequels.

-JJ Abrams and his cinematographer for using film instead of HD Video.

- Quinto as Spock

- Nimoy as Spock Prime.

- Chris Pine for not doing a Shatner impression. And the fact that he can act unlike Hayden.

- now that i think about it with a more open mind going with a fresh Score instead of a pale imitation of Goldsmith was the way to go.  They quote the Alexander Courage theme at the end of the soundtrack.  So there is no reason why they could not use the main title from the motion picture in the next movie, other than it has already been overused.

This film is not the disaster  that the star wars prequels and indy 4 were.  But it is also not on the level of a film as Last years biggest hyped film the Dark Knight.  I do think it would be a better movie than Iron Man minus the lense flares and shaky cam.  Hated it in Cloverfield and i hate it here.

Before i get burned at the stake by star wars and indy fanboys let me say i was entertained by the prequels and indy IV but found them woefully inadequate to the original films.

A few things i liked versus too many to mention i hated.

Maybe its a trophy in Anakins home, lol.

Just Kidding.  You know he massacred all those sandpeople in episode II.  " They're like animals.  and I slaughtered them like animals.  Not just the men.  But the women and the children too. I HATE THEM!"

While reading that quote imagine a whiny Hayden voice.  Sullen.  Like a child denied a cookie and sent to time out.

Abrams is Destroying Star Trek like Lucas has Destroyed Star Wars
Time

So it is a seperate continuity from classic trek and invalidates the past of trek as well as treks future i.e. the next generation.

Still we have our favorite movies and tv shows on dvd and coming to blu ray.   Don't like the new movie don't give the paramount suits your money.

I for one was suprised to read a review on Amazon.com from another person who like me liked Enterprise and especially its fourth season.  He talked about how that show was very close in spirit to Roddenberry and how the new film is just brainless sellout action flick.  I thought i was the only one who would compare this to Starship Troopers or the redo of lost in space, other people agreed with me there, lol.

To me its like the star wars prequels, and transformers and every other garbage cgi action flick rolled into one.  I will never give Orci a dollar of my money that guy has to be the single biggest hack since Koepp, or Akiva Goldsman.

Not only that the score is better suited as a tv score and not for an action EPIC.  Everything about this film while its not terrible as a seperate continuity and reboot screams star trek lite.  Its heavy on the jokes and the humor, very fast paced and sexy.  But it has no soul.

The acting is okay to excellent in some parts.  Dialogue is passable usually until Orci puts in his little jokes for fratboys.  The Effects are stunning.  But the shaky cam and lens flares give you a godamn headache, or just make you want to smack some sense into the camera person.

The Young Cast is somewhat likeable when they are not hamming it up for the cameras or doing impersonations of the old actors.  They are not replacements for those actors and those versions of the characters, but an alternate take.  This movie is like one of those marvel comics what If? rather than a true backstory for the trek we know.

They could have done that movie and made a few trekkies happy and lost money.  Instead they did the mainstream thing and decided to make some money for once.

Simon Pegg is damn funny playing a bumbling fool.  Not unlike Scotty in star trek V, thanks to shatner " I know this ship like the back of my hand".

Instead we get " I'm giving you all she's got captain" "I like this ship it's exciting" and " Can i get a towel" LOL

The biggest laugh i had was watching Spocklar say " How did you beam aboard this ship.  We are at warp speed."  and Pine " well i'm not telling acting captain"  Spock "Under penalty of court martial how did you board this ship while we were at warp" Kirk to Scotty " don't answer him"  Spock "you Will answer me!"

If star trek is this years dark knight it is safe to say hollywood is not even trying anymore.  Though this film will probably kick wolverines ass since that movie almost universally critics and fans has gotten negative reviews.

Biggest joke of all and this Is a spoiler.  Spock created the Kobayashi Maru scenario, lol.  I don't recall that being mentioned in the wrath of khan.

And the Spock and Spock prime thing is a little bit much.  Too much like a reference to a bad comic book idea in DC comics.  Where you had superboy and superboy prime, or superman or superman prime or some such nonsense.  And of course the retcon super punch. Which in this film is the paradox of time travel.

It worked and was somewhat interesting and amusing in Back to the Future II a lesser sequel to the original.  In this film its merely an excuse to start over because unlike in the back to the future trilogy the real timeline is not restored.  Spock's traveling from the future was pointless.  He did not save vulcan or his mom. These are not the same people on this Enterprise he served with he has no friendship or allegiance to a Jim Kirk of an alternate reality or timeline.  And it is competely out of spock's character to violate the temporal prime directive for personal reasons.

Besides the Enterprise E and Picard should have been able to blow him to kingdom come before he timewarped, or followed him into the past like they did in first contact.

Spock goes it alone because his jellyfish ship is the only ship that can intercept nero, hogwash. Sounds like lazy storytelling to me.

Yeah thats right it came out early on the 19th instead of the 25th.  May 25th Unofficially known as star wars day.  Though star wars 77 did not go into wide release until later.

Phantom Menace is a memory better off forgotten much like the Holiday Special.  Though it does feel like the only real film in the prequel trilogy and is still such a bogus joke and a letdown.

The next 2 films were phoned in pieces of garbage.  Much more like animated cgi movies and not films.  A Bizarre mismatch of live action and cartoon kind of like Roger Rabbit or Looney Tunes back in action.

Though even Pixar could have made a better prequel trilogy if it was totally animated.

To me star wars is over.  Screw the low quality cgi cartoon series which somehow passes muster because it is accidentaly better than the prequels and just barely.  And that Actor got whiny Hayden down perfectly.

The live action show.  Forget it.  Does George Lucas even have fans left he has not alienated already who want to stick around for more bullshit.  Great more Boba Fett George.  But no Vader or Jedi.  Yeah i see that one going over well.

That tuskegee airmen picture will probably be a shoot em up dogfight piece and completely cgi travesty.  History Channel already made a better historical documentary.

Yeah Ebert gave it half a star more than Star Trek V.  Which says a lot in my opinion.

Though i like parts of TREK V the overall movie is disjointed and incomplete.  Just a mess.

I would still personally rate the Shat's film higher than JJ's just because it has the real Captain Kirk and the Real Starship Enterprise.  Real as in authentic in terms of fiction of course.

To me the end of Trek VI with the Captains log was a perfect way to end the classic trek series.  Forget generations.  Just like Indiana Jones riding off into the sunset in Last Crusade was the perfect ending.

Just like to me Return of the Jedi gave closure to the star wars saga.  Sometimes less is more.  Because you can ruin a good thing or in the words of Lucas "it is possible you can destroy these things"

Unless someone in my family begs me to go see this with them.  I am not going to pollute my vision of star trek with this crap.

I can wait for the dvd and a free rental at my public library.  Just another glitzy big budget summer sci fi actioner but star trek is supposed to at least when it was at its best be more than that.

Star Trek is not Star Wars, and it should not try and fit the Starship Troopers type movie either.

What made Trek interesting was that is was risky and not main stream and it made you think.  God Forbid a movie actually engages you thoughtfully at an intellectual level.  Lowest common denominator to make money was Paramount's aim.  For over forty years they have milked this franchise and time and time again proved it was nothing to them except a cash cow.  They did not dig up and reanimate treks corpse for anything other than a lucrative franchise in which to replace the real star trek and bury it forever.

But they have already made it clear that this is an alternate universe and that the true fans need not come along for the ride.  It is for the brain addled youth of today.  How sad they don't make movies for me anymore.  Well at least i have my dvd library at home in which to relive the classic greatness of the old trek and old star wars, and old indiana jones.  These new films won't even get a permanent place in my shelf much less become a favorite i cherish.

To me most of the great films were made in the seventies and eighties.  There are some exceptions in the 1990's like star trek 6.  And in the 2000's like the lord of the rings trilogy.  Other than That nothing has been made i will go back and see multiple times.  Even the better films of the decade i've only seen once or twice.  Nolan's Batman films for instance.

As a true literary science fiction fan i can be nothing less than dissapointed in the newest Trek.  It is not science fiction.  It needs more than aliens, ray guns and spaceships to be so.  This is space fantasy just like star wars. But not as imaginative or exciting and i could care less for Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.  They are no Shatner and Nimoy.  Any More than Hayden was a Mark Hamiill caliber, or Ewan a guiness or Ford level character in the star wars prequels.

I sometimes wonder if i would appreciate these modern dumb entertainments were I a teenager instead of being nearly 31 years of age.

To me its really sad that another one of my childhood favorites has been destroyed.  But nothing lasts forever.   I mean Star Wars was ruined. Transformers was ruined.  Indiana Jones was ruined. Star Trek ruined.  James Bond ruined.  The only franchise left unruined is Batman.

I have yet to see if they also destroyed another favorite of mine Wolverine but based on the reviews i have to say just like X3 they ruined it.  They ruined the Hulk twice.  They ruined spiderman in spiderman 3.

Iron man they somewhat got right.  And the Fantastic 4 was just a bad joke and nothing like Jack Kirby.

The thing is how often do you see a studio delibretely going about alienating its existing fanbase.

By saying this is not your father's star trek.  They are pretty much flipping the bird at original series fans, the ones who they promised a return to classic treks roots.  And they want to have it both ways anyway to be a reboot and not.  To fuck with the fans and then try and placate them by putting Leonard Nimoy into the movie.

An emotional Spock.  What is he now like firckin SYBOK.

The time paradox excuse to explain away the canon backstories is laughable.  Might as well set it in a different parellel reality or the mirror universe because these are not the same characters from the original series films and movies if their life story is changed.  Kirk is not the Kirk we know without Kodas the Executioner and the bad memories of tarsis IV.  Without having his dad around to influence him to get into the academy and become a starship captain.

We all know our life experiences make up a lot of who we are.  You cannot  change that and expect the same character, its a lame copout.  In the End this movie is a 2 hour fuck off and a circle jerk.  Nice shaky camera lense flares and bright colors.  Action, sex and explosions.   What happenened to "seek out strange new worlds and civilizations.  To boldy Go where no man has gone before"

First Contact was an action film too.  But at least that had the Gravitas of Patrick Stewart to carry it.  Chris Pine cannot even measure up to Shatner much less Stewart.  This film is a teen soap drama joke.  But this is not the CW, or One Tree Hill, the OC, Smallville, or the new 90210.

Because brain dead people want a popcorn flick and not cerebral science fiction, or a story that makes you wonder about the unknown out there.  Or give us a realized future and a real update like abrams promised not an apple store bridge and dialogue straight out of micheal bays transformers or a kevin smith film.

Hopefully this film at the end restores the real timeline but i doubt it.  If it did the sequel would not be junk if they got new screenwriters and rid of abrams, or at least got rid of the overly bright exposure and lens flares and shaky cam.  This is not LOST it is star trek.  It is not Cloverfield it is Star Trek.

That not even the half of it the score is a joke.  It is on the level of a tv score and not like a score for an epic motion picture.

In the end this movie was actually shot on film but early on they were going to do digital.  But you would never notice because of the over saturated colors and low grain film stock.  I mean it is not as bad as the cinematography on war of the worlds or Indiana Jones IV but man it is actually worse than the star wars prequels.  At least Lucas did not do shaky cam and lense flares every half a second.

The only postive is the sharpness of the images because of film being used.  It sure does look nice too on a purely eye candy level and ILM outdid themselves on the Effects.  Their effects on Transformers 2 and this film are said to be mindblowing and astounding.  For a big effects picture summer blockbuster action flick you can't go wrong on that level.  And the film will make a shitload of money.

I look forward to the Behind the scenes dvd.  And the cinefex article.

The Alan Dean Foster Novelization does not come out til next week.  Too bad i wanted to read it before seeing the film.  They are going to lose book sales from not releasing it weeks to months early of the films release.

I read the novelizations of the star wars prequels before seeing the films. The comics adaptation.  The scripts and the video games.  What did they do here the film only.  Just like a barebones dvd release.  Not even a making of book or expanded soundtrack.  No Trading cards.  Nothing but bad plastic toys and glasses with fast food, and stupid phaser toys and bad photoshopped movie posters.

Ebert's Review even though only 2 and a half stars out of four is over all positive.  I wonder if Hunter6 actually read it.

The opening thing he says really struck me though and is over all a condemnation of the new film.

“Star Trek” as a concept has voyaged far beyond science fiction and into the safe waters of space opera, but that doesn’t amaze me. The Gene Roddenberry years, when stories might play with questions of science, ideals or philosophy, have been replaced by stories reduced to loud and colorful action. Like so many franchises, it’s more concerned with repeating a successful formula than going boldly where no “Star Trek” has gone before."

Which i find curious because he does not explore this in the same context of star wars.  Did not this same man like Episode III.  Geez i mean the prequels were space opera "more concerned with repeating a sucessful formula" Was this dude even paying attention.

I knew in the beginning this movie would be a throwaway action flick just like some of the previous entries the actioners were more sucessful than the cerebral motion picture the rodenberry trek that stalled in space dock and was revived to new life in the wrath of khan.  First Contact and Khan were sucessful action flicks.  Insurrection was a lesser entry though still good without lots of boxoffice returns,  Nemesis repeated themes and added new ones and still was a flop.

I can do that in my dvd player from the main menu and like you said it makes a noticeable difference, but not on my computer.

I have nero showtime and i'm not sure if i can turn off drc on the features won't hurt to try though.  What DVD player suites/software do you recommend?

Did they do any kind of changes like sweetening of the audio for the dvd?

I remember there was a big question if they did some, and if they applied a sharpening algorithm to the image or if the grain was just reduced or softened do to the limits of laserdisc.

The problem with the Gout is not the grain but a lack of consistency of grain levels from shot to shot.  As in the composite opticals done in the optical printer added 2 or 3 more generation to the picture and compounded the grain problem so they applied DVNR to correct some of this on the masters because at the time they did not have access to the o-neg.

They could have done that after the negative was restored and before the special editions changes but now its too late they permanently altered it by cutting it up and splicing in the new footage.

Supposedly even the interpositives/internegatives where in poor shape as were surviving film prints.

They never did disclose info on the YCM seperation masters though, and i don't doubt these were used by YCM laboratories in the restoration where necessary as well as parts of the o-neg and IP.

"If you could interview George Lucas, what would you say?"

ask about when he is going to make a second star wars holiday special or howard the duck.

Ask him to make a Jar Jar movie trilogy. When is Indiana Jones V: The  search for more money going to come out?

Ask him to make a series of 5 more movies with triple the explosions and cgi and starring Hayden Vader.

I'm being sarcastic of course.

That is easy 1979 or 1980 based on conjecture.  Without solid evidence of course.  The First star wars treatment was no earlier than 1973 and the rough draft script in 1974.  I also don't believe He would have had that in mind in 1975-1976 and the idea could really not have struck him until the devlopment of the empire strikes back, Started in 1978.

Leia being the sister could not have been in his head in 1977-1980,I don't think. To about sometime around 1982, possibly 1983.

The Journal of the Whills document is about Mace Windy, and talks about someone called CJ Thorpe.  The Sibling twins thing did not happen to the draft where Luke has a brother.  At one point Luke was a girl.  Perhaps the character was cut in 2 and divided into seperate characters, The girl Luke must be the first seed of the genesis of Princess Leia.

That is an interesting comment Puggo because the longer premiere cut of 2001 is lost.  And will never be seen again.  Luckily they found the premiere cut of Metropolis but it was a low quality print that was not 35mm.

The premiere 70mm showcase version of star wars 1977 with the 6 track dolby will never be seen or heard of again.  Which is an utter travesty and crime against the preservation of classic science fiction and fantasy films.

The best way i have currently to watch star wars is the DC laserdiscs.  They are nice and all but i would prefer a restored theatrical print and dvd/blu ray release.  The gout is an absolute joke.  i know it looks sharper than the laserdisc but it also looks worse because of the sharpening and sounds worse because of the low bitrate 2.0 dolby which could easily pass muster as a bad mp3 rip.

I put on the laserdisc just last night and was astounded by the sonic difference in the audio.  The Stereoization is more defined there is more depth to the sound and the lows are lows and the highs are highs.  The Soundtrack is loud in all the right places and quiet when it needs to let Williams music soar on through.
