Idea & Info: Cinerama 70mm '2001' preservation. Is it possible?
Time

Spaced Ranger and All, please excuse me if what I'm relying is not cool, however if a preservation project was done, would the pink would be retained or removed? I ask because the 'pink' is in the Kubrick-approved LD, which I think some people regard as the 'right'/'correct'.

Spaced Ranger, your latest screenshot for the ARs is awesome, thank you. Also thank you for the links and I'm already familiar with both of them, they should be required reading for this forum.   ;-)

Info Thread: 3D Movies Preservation

Hi TripleHBK and others,

Does jsonthegreat still show up here?

From what I understand, both perspectives (Left and Right) are available on both the DVD and BR. I still don't understand why each perspective was taken from a different source (with a different resolution). Can someone shed light upon this?

Instead of 11GB, if possible, I'd rather have a 1080p 3-to-6GB MPEG-4 AVC in a MP4/MKV container. This is just a rant (please let me know if it belongs somewhere else)

TripleHBK said:

...

The reason for the 2 separate sources (one DVD & One Blu Ray) is that one eye is from the dvd (I can't remember which, but let's call it the left) and one from the Blu Ray (Let's call it the Right).

...

The file is 11GB in size. ... Ideally, someone would be interested in taking this and turning it into a full release with menu and extra's and possibly the 2D version all on a BD-50, but for now that's wishful thinking.

Info & Discussion: Fullscreen Laserdisc / DVD Preservations
Time

The information in the replies are great to know. However, it seems most consumers and the powers that be don't seem to care for open-matte.

It's a shame many films are matted before distribution rather than use the technology & options built into players/displays to (soft-)matte (real-time). It's true in some cases PQ would suffer, however in many cases I don't think PQ would suffer too much.

Info & Discussion: Fullscreen Laserdisc / DVD Preservations
Time

Any one have a list of open-matte films? I think I read here somewhere that many 1.85:1 films were open-matte.

I like open-matte a lot, especially when the film took fullscreen into consideration during filming/post. I think 'Truman Show' is an example. However, many DVDs that were presented with open-matte on DVD are presented as widescreen on later releases. 'Truman Show' also another example of this.

BTW, I prefer '28 Days Later' fullscreen (open-matte) DVD because it was filmed on DVCAM. Note, there is one quick transition scene that looks off in '28 Days Later' fullscreen (open-matte) DVD.

I didn't know you were the authority on acronyms, nor did I know there was an authority-at-all on acronyms.

I will say there is truth to having acronyms be understood, however we're commenting on BD vs BR on originaltrillogy.com. With the context provided, if you didn't understand I meant Blu-Ray with BR, then you're not as intelligent as I thought.

You can reply to this post, however I will refrain because this has now gone off-topic.

Go have a nice day.

Hi, what else am I missing that's really good and/or a must-have

In case anyone in NA is interested, I purchased the 3D Target-version of ST: ID and as previously mentioned it includes the iTunes HD version (coupon may now be expired, dunno) with IMAX ratio and enhanced commentary and 2 additional featurettes.

Thank you and Cheers!

Will I get banned for this? Is this trolling?

I wasn't being mean towards you nor did I have issue with you. I also didn't mean to get on your bad side, however I don't think the fault lies with me and you just seem hostile. So I joined 3 days ago, what is that supposed to imply/mean?

So quick-to-judge and quick-to-dismiss. What a world we live in.

Thank you and DVD-BOY, BR just sounds completely stupid! but I am sure he will continue saying BR LMAO because of his "issue".

Thanks again for the facts and links, I am now done with this dude especially since he just joined 3 days ago.

Hi, I read this thread and this other thread and the new 4K BRs were released since. However, 'The Stairway' Deleted Scene, Libray Ghost Split-Screen, Ballroom Split Screen, and Ruth Oliver's Library Ghost Scream Test were not included. Anyone have these in at least LD-resolution? Thank you and Cheers!

Other good GB links:

In that other thread, ctlw83 mentioned gbfans.com in Post 147

Hi, I looked and could only find references to Flesh for Frankenstein (1973) 3D. Is that what you meant? Either way, Blood For Dracula 3D sounds awesome.

suntech said:

Andy Warhol"S Presentation of Paul Morrissey' s Blood For Dracula Was originally done in 3D. You needed polarized glasses for viewing it. It is a shame that it hasn't been released in 3D Blu Ray.  I would go out and get a new 3D Flatscreen just for that.

Info: 'Captain Eo' - Laserdisc on Ebay; the movie or documentary?
Time

+1

Hi all, I was expecting this thread to have many posts. This IMDB page lists 3 Captain EO items.

  1. Captain EO (1986)
  2. Captain EO Promo & Pre-show
  3. The Making of 'Captain Eo' (1986)

I've seen #1 and #2 and probably #3. The link in the OP probably is referring to #2 and it's good to know that #2 is available on LD.

Is anyone working on these?

Is there a consensus that there is "green" in the BR?

Also, can 2001 ASO be color-corrected with simple changes or is a correct print in digital form needed.

PDB said:

The pink is built into the master for the LD. In fact its not uncommon to see a pink tint on older telecine masters from the late 80s and into the 90s. Much like its not uncommon to see green in HD masters today.

I definitely see green in the BD master. Anytime there is white it tends to be green, subtract enough on that green and you get close to the same level of pink of the LD master.

The Thing (1982) - sound mixes (Released)
Time

GregK and others, has anyone compared the mixes?

Is the 6-track similar to the 4.1 track audio?

Which is better? Is the remix vastly different than the original audio?

GregK said:

the non-anamorphic DVD release of THE THING was a true discrete 4.1 port over, with no split surrounds. It is encoded as DD 5.1, but only has mono surrounds.

Later mixes were altered where the surrounds had some minor surround left/right activity. I don't know if it was a full blown remix or if simple directionality was added to the surrounds with the mix other than that left "as-is"...

 Thank you in advance.

Info Wanted: 10,000 Maniacs - MTV Unplugged - Laserdisc (has anyone done a preservation?)

Every now and then my need to purchase a LD player diminishes, however 10,000 Maniacs MTV Unplugged Laserdisc is still on my list and I was wondering if anyone has a preservation. The Laserdisc contains stuff not released anywhere else.

Please reply or PM me if possible. Thank you!

In my world, which may or may not be your world, BR=Blu-Ray.

Because...

Digital Video/Versatile Disc => DVD, but do folks say Digital Video/Versatile Disc? No. And I hope no one obnoxious chimes in and says they do.

Blu Ray Disc => BRD, but does anyone say Blu Ray Disc? No, folks say Blu-Ray.

Blu Ray => BR
