Hey, I've been following this thread for a while now, and figured I'd post this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnrHvnCTH6k

This is a heavy re-edit of the Episode III opening battle.  Notable changes are:

-No Buzz Droids

-New Music

-Color correction

I know the youtube upload created some odd interlacing, but I would like to know what you think of the pacing and the color changes.

That was excellent. You've trimmed goofy droid sounds and excessive action yet kept the same storytelling line. This was quick but I think ultimately left me wanting more(which is good).

And you got rid of those godawful Kenobi and R2 digi-doubles leaping out of their ships in the hangar.

And to imagine that the space battle in the rough cut was even longer, much longer than the released film.

I know that the flyby is tough to recreate it without footage or whatever.

But since we see in the next shots that there is heights in the snow, why in the establishing shots are all plain?

Even if the mockup doesnt present the correct landscape it gives the idea. Right JJ? :)

-Angel

Because the plains hes on at first drop off in the subsequent shots. He's on a plateau. Then he rides to the edge of it.

The studio set is completely the wrong scale. It's actually too small as can be seen when they are repairing the falcon in ESB and we see Chewie in the cockpit from outside. The cockpit is about 40% smaller than it should be when we see them in the cockpit set. So to match the scale of the cockpit set and the model the studio version should be a lot bigger.

he is right.

Just for proofs

So this is not going to be a fix ,right ady?

At least the inner red lights? :D

-Angel

Damn, I never noticed how bad the scale was.  It looks like the depth of the cockpit was cut in half, the two rear seats are gone, with only the window portions built for the scene.  The control console is just a 2-D cutout and Chewie's face is pressed right up against the glass.  Knowing now how much money ESB made back in 1980, kinda makes you wish they spent just a tad more to get the little things right, oh well.

Well first off, they made the movie before it made all that money. Second, have you ever read what a logistical monster ESB was to make? Be grateful we even got a finished movie. ;)

I've just posted this idea on my own thread, but thought I'd post it here too as more people read this.

Well I've just had an idea about a possible way to fix the whole Jango/Boba issue in the film. As it stands, he's clearly affiliated with both sides, both being the host for the clone army and being on geonosis with Dooku (which not only makes the jedi look ridiculously stupid for still using the army, but also poses its own problems in an edit where Dooku is a good Jedi)

So here's my idea - after escaping Obi Wan on Kamino, we use one of the existing P.O.V Slave 1 cockpit shots, and have a hologram of a hooded, obscured faced Palpatine/Sidious come up. We then have him say (either through sampling existing dialogue, or voice modulation, or a combination of the two) something like "very good, now lead them to the seperatists. We will have our war." (or something cleverer than that - I haven't really thought about the line much).

The point is, Jango/Boba now has a reason to lead Obi Wan to Geonosis. We then never see him again after that (he is not in the arena) and Dooku's line of "there are no bounty hunters here that I am aware of" becomes truth.

That's not a bad idea. I wonder if there's some footage from the asteroid chase for Jango's reaction to the hologram. He wouldn't have to say anything. It would all be Siddy. And there just might be a way to put together some dialogue that is spread throughout the prequels where Sidious says: "Geonosis. War. Lead." etc. Or maybe just dubbing in someone else's voice would be more appropriate?

But good idea overall.

-Although, i go for a DAMN no way on removing the Lambada shutlle from Jedi. Its the most georgious space-ship ever designed, and we get get to see the most of it Endor (i get your way of thinking, but i have seen the the shuttle with an alternitive design, so I urge you to think of some sort of of a work around when you get to Jedi). Thats just messing with the OT too much. But thats another totally seperate project from here.

I have never said i'm getting rid of the Lambda shuttle from ROTJ:R. I'm scrapping the copycat ANH opening and changing the Tydirium to a different design so its noticeably different as its supposed to be a cargo shuttle. The opening is just a rehash of ANH as it stands at the moment. It's one thing i hated when i saw the movie. Jedi really needs to get away from that . And i agree that the opening as it stands makes the Death Star look insignificant when its supposed to be more powerful. The stardestroyer just dwarfs it.

That's the spirit! ROTJ recycles so many things. The further away we can get from that, while still retaining the core essence of the story, is all for the better IMHO.

Ok, I see where you're going with that, but it begs the question: why? What possible reason could Sidious have for issuing such an order?

Well perhaps once he has the chancellorship, the droids are useless to him? Just thinking out loud here. In fact, if we went with the idea that Dooku is a maverick jedi and NOT a sith led around at the nose by Siddy, then this "betrayal" of the viceroy would fit right in with Dooku's discussion with kenobi in AOTC about the viceroy coming to Dooku about this dark lord's betrayal.

Sets up the next movie and the motives of the viceroy for giving Dooku, in our cut a well-intentioned good guy, the federation resources to fight the republic.

Okay, I was thinking: how do the jedi get onto the ship? Well, they fly in with their red ship. Maybe the footage could be sped up and lasers added so it looks like the jedi go right into the bay. Then you cut to the ship being blown up...the viceroy is happy. droids up to the door. insert conference room footage of jedi coming though smoke-filled hangar with sabers drawn.

All of that could be done with existing footage...and no drawn out footage of Qui-Gon having tea.

Yeah, the power station architecture even looks more neimoidian than nubian. You could even insert 3PO into the end celebration at the end along with Bail Organa and R2, among others.

But now new questions:

What is Padme doing during this battle? Where is she? Does she stay at the palace and chase another new objective? Is she on the ship too? If so, who are our eyes on Naboo? Is there even a ground battle now?

I'm not sure if there is a definite dress code for senatorial meetings, the Wookiees and the little ET guys turn up practically in the nude.

Jar-Jar may be dressing down because as a Gungan he doesn't represent the planet officially at this point (I was working on him being seen as a bit of a sell-out by his people for even mixing with the humans who see the Naboo as unwelcome off-worlders with no legitimate claim to the planet).

By being a representative of the Gungans he could advise the queen but not address the Senate.

After the battle when the Gungans and the Naboo start to get along Jar-Jar would have equal footing as joint Naboo Senator something Palpatine could later exploit.

It would give him a better reason for being distrusted by his fellow Gungans than just being clumsy, something which needs to be watered down but could be kept to some extent.

Think more "Fish out of water" than "Crazy Frog".

Ok I get you now Bingo. You want the narratve moving forward from planet to planet rather than going back somewhere. Yes, that is a good idea.

No sorry.

The ships were sampled from out of the window while the Queen's ship breaks the blockade,  the planet is from the matte painting (not very well cut out I'm afraid "It's hard to stay inside the lines!") and the starfield is a generic element so it should be possible to remake it in higher definition if someone had access to captures from the HD broadcasts.

My idea for restructuring the film is to have the invasion happen while the Queen is on Coruscant and have her on her way there when her ship is shot down and they are forced to land on Tatooine.

Naboo takes the place of Yavin in Episode One as the final destination and location of the big battle.

Huh?

Hopefully Angel still has it stored somewhere.

Well i have it but like ady said, it cant be used.

But i like to bring this again since we had no word from ady. I remember at the begining he didnt like the idea but at the end considered to do something. who knows :)

Same goes with the elevator idea of bingo.

-Angel

What if you added a small sith sculpture to the background instead of all the hallway lights and stuff? I'm thinking of to the right of the Imperial officer.

I like those mockups Vaderios, but what about having it even earlier in the morning?

well the first idea was the buildings would be almost like silhouettes with the fireworks illuminate their colors here and there indicating depth. But it was too dark... I liked the idea of dawn of the new era.

Maybe. I can try :)

-Angel

Actually I would like to see this in ESB and have a nice happy day at the end of Return Of The Jedi. This picture looks sadder so it would fit in ESB with the imperial take over.

Add happy clouds and play Mr. Blue Sky at the end of ROTJ and we will have a happier ending.

That reminds me of Bob Ross! Ahh, happy clouds with happy buildings. Maybe we can paint a little happy person over here? LOL

Adding saber reflection to the glass?

-Angel

Wow, that's cool!  But it should look more like Vader's saber is in front of Luke's in the reflection.

TV's Frink said:

I find the lightsaber reflections distracting, regardless of how much sense it makes.  I love the saber fix a few posts earlier, however.

Well, the problem is we can see Luke's leg and the floor panel reflected in the window - if the lightsabres aren't reflected, then all reflections should be taken out (unless the light from the sabres are g-g-g-g-ghosts!)

EDIT: got beaten to the punch!  You know, I'm surprised Ric didn't point this out before any of us.  Man, Ric, you're slipping!  "Hey, there's Luke reflected in the window... but WHERE ARE THE LIGHTSABRES?!"

From the position of the leg reflection, would you even see the sabers in the glass? It almost looks like that leg is positioned back away from the sabers and perhaps the sabers would be on the wall.

So the second wave of troops should be beefed up a lot but the Rebels should come with enough equipment to take out the troops they expect to find, especially on an all or nothing mission like this one.

That's alot better way to put it.  Yes your right about all the troops, it wouldn't work, I just want to see another legion.

I just want to see A Legion, period. We don't come close in the existing film.

That's daft, sorry but it is.

The Empire spans an entire Galaxy I doubt if all the Empire's troops would fit on Endor, they certainly wouldn't be able to hide long enough for them to spring a trap on the Rebels (by the way he doesn't mention his fleet only that he has sent an entire Legion of his best troops).

Who would keep the rest of the Galaxy in line while they are off on this mission?

A Legion is 1000 troops and command personnel and that is on top of the troops that the Rebels would expect to find at such an important site.

So the second wave of troops should be beefed up a lot but the Rebels should come with enough equipment to take out the troops they expect to find, especially on an all or nothing mission like this one.

Yes but we don't see close to 1000 stormies outside the bunker. This should be corrected. We need to see this legion of elite troops.
