Adywan, I was watching your final ESB:R trailer again, and I noticed that around 0:51-0:52, when Luke spots the snowspeeder, his head/neck movement seems much too jarring. Did you notice that, and fix it?

It was supposed to be a fix already, but it seems much to stuttering now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPtwBQpDl08&feature=related

I really haven't got a clue what you mean. Is it when he turns to see the falcon? Well if it is that has been fixed as can be seen in the trailer. There is nothing jarring about it and certainly no stuttering

Well, yes, that's exactly it. The point where he turns his head to see the falcon (not snowspeeder). I know you already fixed that point where he turns his head, but he seems to be turning it "inhumanely fast", don't you? His head turns too fast, way too fast, for it to be normal, even if it is just to queue it in time with the falcon turning round.

Or is that just me?

Haven't you ever heard a loud noise and swiftly turned your head to see what the hell it is?

Happens with all animals, including us.

You can go into the same themes and ideas:(natural world is better, industrialised is bad) without getting too close to those Shinto-like ideas Miyazaki explored in Mononoke.

Isn't it funny though how closely related all the talk from Yoda about the Force being tied to all living things can cover much the same ground?

Originally Lucas had the idea of Had Abbadon, home of the Empire, being overpopulated. It was a city-planet. Endor was nearby and was being cleared for resettlement of people from Had Abbadon.

So my suggestion is to try and keep the spirit of Lucas' original idea there with some sort of action by the Empire that causes a timely dilemma for the Ewoks.

I like the idea of the Empire plundering it for resources for the DS2 because it would be easier to accomplish and would be less clunky than force migration of Imperial citizens to a forest moon.

It would also give us an opportunity to show a scene or two of the damage wrought by the Empire.

Maybe the rebels go through a section of forest that has been clear cut? Maybe the speeder bike pilots the heroes confront early on are parked in a clear cut area or something?

Then you could have a scene showing the heroes a rusted out AT AT or something.

So first establish: Empire ruining the planet.

Then establish: something here is fighting back. But what?

Then Leia meets Wicket. What? These guys? Come on.

Then when we see them in battle we're like: S***! These Teddy bears are little versions of Wookies.

I also like the idea of the Ewoks facing a threat. A perilous threat to their way of life and very existence(like losing their forest, their home).

ROTJ should up the ante waaay up. It is the climax and should show how dastardly the Empire can clearly be.

I dislike how ROTJ just bums along. And the Empire doesn't really do anything particularly offensive.

Awesome ^^ Ady's the MAN.

He's fixing things some of us probably never noticed. I'm going to check for those last two instances now.....

The only other continuity thing I can think of is a shot sometime around when Boba escapes with Han....we see Lando in the background (He's blurry and I think right behind Leia)) almost as if he's relaxing or at ease - but in the next shot he's back to looking very tense.

No, look at that shot again. He's bowing his head in disappointment that they couldn't save Han. You can almost see him saying "damn" under his breath. Seriously, look at again and you'll see what I'm saying. He's hanging his head. He puts his hands on his hips as if he's thinking "now what?". Then 3PO blurts out "Chewie they're behind you!".

It's that level of detail that Kersh brought to the proceedings when it came to the characters, even out of focus ones. ;)

Why ESB is still the best. :D

could the imperials be strip mining endor to build the death star? when the rebels enter they could fly over large machinery and numerous quarries.

Well, without the direct rip from Avatar's approach to Hell's Gate(which was done by ILM btw), the idea of Endor providing resources makes sense. Deforestation, strip mining, etc, etc.

But instead of blue cat people we have Ewoks and Star Wars.

i hope i don't get defined as an avatar fan, as i can't stand the film. however much it may seem like a rip off as an idea, the way it is portrayed and combined with numerous alternative elements will play it down. it can just be a convenient "look how nasty the empire is" moment.

i'm sure avatar isn't the first film to feature an environmental issue (although i scratch my head to think of another sci-fi with deforestation)

how about replacing ewoks with ents...?:S

You said yourself you thought of Princess Mononoke, not Avatar. Avatar is derivative as all get out.

But then so was Miyazaki, Tolkein, and numerous other writers and filmmakers.

We keep seeing the same themes pop up in numerous films and books because they resonate with people.

SW is derivative too. It took classic storytelling structures and themes, gave them new environments and settings, and used cutting edge vfx.

They work.

Is anyone else of the opinion the above the clouds portion of the Coruscant reveal in AOTC is more appropriate for a first-reveal. It lingers a bit.

Good point!

Which reminds that there is a fog layer issue in that shot.

Notice when the silver spaceship enters the clouds and before it cuts to the next shot a cloud layer disappears causing some opacity issues.

It could be interesting if instead of coruscant the name nar shadaa was there :)

Nice to see you back shaner :)

-Angel

Thx Angel. Nice to be back.

I wonder if there would be a way to introduce that AOTC shot into TPM's Coruscant reveal instead. Basically take the shot up until they enter the fog. Then, cut to the Anakin reaction from TPM and the existing footage of Coruscant's cityscapes.

That way you have a little more setup time for this planet on the intro film so next time we see it we can get right into the story.

I like the idea of having Episode 1 be as simple as possible in good guy vs bad guy sense. Have one main bad guy: Darth Maul, a sith lord.

So first film: Jedi vs Sith, setting stage for a truly maverick fallen jedi in Dooku, who will lead the seperatists in AOTC.

So in the second film things can become more complex.

What if we took Sio Bibble's "the death toll is catastrophic" hologram and instead of on the Queen's ship, it is broadcast in the senate?

Then you could have existing cutaways of Amidala, Palps, Valorum, etc.

This would lead to the "vote now" cries in the senate. Vote for a jedi "investigation" or forcing of a settlement.

It passes. The jedi leave to investigate.

Me either. You can have it be fierce with violence(they all had that) but not gore.

But anyway. We're debating this when we all agree that the battle as is doesn't work and isn't credible enough.

So we can quibble about blood splats later.

Ewoks = make more ferocious YES

Make battle larger YES

Show signs of a existing imperial/Ewok conflict from the start YES

Mrbenja But how do we get the Jedi onto the ship? I'm not being critical, I really want to know. Heck if we can figure out a way, I may take a stab.

As bingo said, the senate votes to investigate things further, also making the senate not look so stoooooopid, the jedi go and they fly in their big red ship, then BOOM!

You cut from the ship blowing up, to the door with all the fumes recoloured to look like smoke from the ship and the jedi fly out of there with their sabers flying.

In other words:

Gunray: It's the jedi! they're landing on the ship my lord!

Sidious: Kill them immediately

The ships lands, the turret swings, fires, the ship blows up.

Gunray gloats. Put a stationary Maul standing in the background.

The droids march up to the conference room door, now the hangar door. The door opens with the smoke billowing out.

The jedi come flying out.

"The movie starts with Ric "Action" Olie?

LOVE IT!!!"

Olie: It's the blockade and we're escaping it!

Bingo Good idea for Sidious. It almost inverts the original structure. Plus it saves him for later so we just see Maul at first....as it should be.

But by starting on Coruscant you wait forever for the first piece of action... It should always begin with action.

It would. it would start with the queen's ship fleeing the blockade.

And Bingo is right. Remember the discussion about putting the final duel on board the federation ship? You could even put all the Kenobi/Jinn slice and dicing of droids into the spot just before the duel begins. maybe they fight their way to a door, it opens, and there is Maul....waiting.

*cue duel of the fates*

Maybe the jedi are fighting to the bridge to shut down the droid army? maybe they're fighting to the hangar/generator room to sabotage the power generator for the droid army.

That's what that generator could be. The power generator for the entire droid force.

The idea of Ewoks having weapons on hand makes sense if they have had run ins with the Imperials before.

But the idea of a past conflict should probably be limited to one shot. Someone a while back had the idea of a rusted burnt out AT-AT.

That would be very cool. Or perhaps more credibly, a scout walker(if they've already been established to that point).

The thing I like about the AT-AT shot though is we know how powerful the walkers are from the previous film and to see one burned out on the forest moon would likely make the rebels say "what did that?".

You could even reorder the end scene of the ewoks with the imperial helmets as drums and put it into the heroes arrival at the village for dinner.

So if the Ewoks have weapons already to go then that would mean perhaps a attack is imminent or they're protecting their village from a threat of attack.

Maybe the Ewoks plan a last-ditch assault on the Imperials, the rebels see their outmatched, and so they join forces?

There has to be a really good reason beyond a landing platform and a shield generator why the Ewoks would fight the imperials.

What was the motivation of the Indians fighting the US government?

They were taking their land and relocating them or worse.

I think we have to rethink the entire motivation for why the Ewoks would be so aggressively fighting a guerilla war against the empire.

Because in the grand scheme of things a landing platform and shield generator have a small footprint on Endor.

We need something grand. Something more evil the empire is doing on Endor.

And whatever you think of the film Avatar, Cameron gave the humans a good motivation for why they're deforesting and mining Pandora. And also why the Navi are fighting back so fiercely.

It's funny that Cameron used many of the same ideas Lucas had in his earlier drafts of ROTJ. The Earth is all used up. The humans are searching for more areas to exploit and mine. They find the lush world of Pandora and begin despoiling it.

In the earlier drafts of ROTJ, Had Abbaddon was all used up. The imperials are searching for more areas to exploit and resettle people from Had Abaddon. They find the lush world of Endor and begin despoiling it.

They care about Endor because it's where the shield generator is located.  Who said they care about the Ewoks?

This is going on the "there's a small war going on between the imperials and the ewoks" angle. Bingo and others brought it up as a way to suggest the ewoks are not just a bunch of docile bears that are talked into fighting but have already been fighting the imperials for some time now.

What is the motivation?

Strangely, some of this post-war carnage reminds me of the boat trip upriver searching for Kurtz in Apocalypse Now.

Yes, so flaming toasted ewoks. Especially with all the pyro blasts going off around the stunt ewoks in the battle.

I have a question: why do the imperials care so much about endor? why would they care about the primitives ?

This reminds me of Avatar: the humans had a reason to deforest Pandora and attempt to assimilate the Navi.

So, why do the imperials care? Why would there be a war?

The recent talk here has centered around starting the film as the queen escapes Naboo. I think we might have talked about it before too.

I still love the idea. It puts you right in the center of the action and sets up the good guys and bad guys right away.

Plus it gives us the opportunity to later revisit Naboo as a through narrative instead of going back to it. The OT always had us going from one planet to the next with the heroes.
