What is art ?
What is art ?
tonight I watched Raiders Of The Lost Ark on VHS , in honor of the 40th anniversary this weekend , and then I watched Batman Returns on VHS . My sound system at home is very unconventional …I currently have a 4head HI-FI stereo VCR hooked up to 2 CRT TVs , a 19 inch ,which is hooked up through coaxial and a 13 inch tv/vcr combo hooked up through rca jacks . I have computer speakers hooked up to the smaller tv through the headphone jack and from that , I am running a male to male aux cable to a Sony boombox with a bass reflex sound system . The 19 inch tv has a 2.0 sound bar hooked up to it and is sitting on a desk below the smaller tv .
The 1994 VHS and Laserdisc of Jurassic Park is the theatrical Dolby Stereo mix. The scene where you see the T.Rex for the first time moves the theater even in the Laserdisc’s PCM stereo.
^ Thanks for the tip , I will have to add that to my collection. I just watched Batman Returns (1992) on VHS and the sound was awesome on it . According to wikipedia ,It was the first film to be announced as released with Dolby SR-D technology (later known as Dolby Digital.
For clarification , My sound system at home is very unconventional …I currently have a 4head HI-FI stereo VCR hooked up to 2 CRT TVs , a 19 inch ,which is hooked up through coaxial and a 13 inch tv/vcr combo hooked up through rca jacks . I have computer speakers hooked up to the smaller tv through the headphone jack and from that , I am running a male to male aux cable to a Sony boombox with a bass reflex sound system . This thread is intended for people to cite examples of movies that have great stereo only sound, which do not require an av receiver or other equipment to be enjoyed at home, and to articulate their opinions on why , and can include older media formats as well . I am an avid collector of VHS , so have a particular interest in this topic .
^ This current discussion reminds me of the whole " Ring Theory " that was going on a few years back , I gotta go with HelloGreedo on his take on it here…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FGBGcvWkdM
To which I rebuke with this video essay by Rick Worley. He shares quotes from George that back things up that show the Ring Theory is true. It’s definitely intentional as you can even see it in The Clone Wars.
Here’s also a shorter video that addresses the idea.
Even Disney Star Wars does it. Albeit without understanding context a lot of the time and deliberate copy and paste.
^ In regards to the first video you linked to , cherry picking and subjective editing and commentary do not prove something to be true and the maker of that video is analogous to those he points to who are doing the same thing .
In regards to the second video , a great deal of those story points in Empire are a greatly attributable to screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan ,who also was a screenwriter on The Force Awakens …I think he understood context just fine . The video also points to Terminator 2 as an example of ring theory ,which HelloGreedo mentions that a ton of other films do and that it’s not hard to spot these things if you are looking for them .
In regards to the third video…of course their are parallels ,as HelloGreedo mentions that a ton of other films do and that it’s not hard to spot these things if you are looking for them, even The Legends EU did these things like closed loops and circular narratives ,as does Star Wars under Disney , which Those Rebels clips in the video are a part of .
All this said , there are things that I like about All of the Star Wars films and things I don’t ,which is a whole other topic on its own .

^ I agree with all of this , would love to hear ideas from people about how this could have been implemented and what the narrative would entail from A to Z so to speak …
while I am not a big fan of the current Marvel Star Wars comics , I do find this interesting
Out of curiosity, what do you generally not like about them? Most of the reaction I’ve seen to Marvel’s sw comics has been positive; the recent Vader and Kanan comic series in particular are really popular.
If you don’t mind me butting in;
This all depends greatly on who you ask. Some people really hate the new SW Marvel comics with a passion, while most people I follow online seem quite indifferent to them. I personally stopped paying attention a while ago, finding it to just be too much and not being too impressed overall. Don’t get me wrong, some of it’s been great. I actually think Charles Soule’s Vader series is up there with the best SW comics of all time, but the rest has been quite average I feel. There might be a generational thing as well, and/or a feeling that the tone of the new comics aren’t all that consistent. I tried reading the Aphra series, and while it was fine enough, I just never got the hype. It just seemed kind of dull to me. As for the main series following Luke and the other OT characters, it just doesn’t fell like the OT at all, and the characterization feels off to. It lacks that old serial charm, and instead feels like it takes itself way too serious. Maybe that’s why the Vader series has worked so well (though I personally thought he art in the first run by Larroca was pretty bad).I also think that the new comics, regardless of what you think of the art, writing, etc. feel so much more pointless nowadays. Before there were multiple cartoons and live-action series the EU existed in novels and comics, yet both of these mediums feel more like filler than anything of consequence, so that might be a factor for a lot of fans as well.
^ yeah , I agree with most of this ,and I will add that most modern comics don’t really do much for me when they are 5 to 6 bucks for a single issue that can be read in five minutes as opposed to the original Marvel Star Wars which had narrative captions that enhanced the stories for me . Same goes for most of the 80s comics I read . Back then , four issues were the equivalent of a full movie for me , as each was about a half hour read . Plus , they had the benefit of doing things that movies can’t really do ( kind of hard for me to explain , for the best idea of what I am talking about , read the book Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud ) .
What turned me off the most about Marvel’s current Star Wars comic was Luke having a lightsaber duel with Vader immediately after the original movie and then later seeing that Leia gets frozen in carbonite right after Empire Strikes Back . Both of those strain credibility to me and I feel Luke and co. would not have gone back to Cloud City that soon .
I did enjoy some of the exploits of Dr. Aphra and her murderous droid companions though , The Han Solo comics were pretty good as well as the first Lando series . The Vader series overall though , I can take or leave as I still think he is over used and has more impact when he shows up sporadically .
Out of the new stuff , I think I enjoyed Shattered Empire the most and the art in that was great . The worst of the new stuff I have seen would have to be the adaptation of The Last Jedi . While I loved the movie , the comic looked like it was drawn by a 5 year old . The covers were decent though .
This is a purely subjective thread for those who wish to speculate on alternate reasons for Anakin’s fall to the dark side ,in contrast to how it played out in the established prequel trilogy . I am especially interested to hear from people who saw the original unaltered trilogy at the time of their releases in the late 70s and early 80s .
while I am not a big fan of the current Marvel Star Wars comics , I do find this interesting . If true , it would go a long way for me in explaining why something looked " off " about Luke at the end of season 2 of The Mandalorian …https://www.denofgeek.com/comics/star-wars-luke-hand-luuke-skywalker-thrawn-the-mandalorian-season-3/?fbclid=IwAR1Ku2ZRFV7EpnNFrvXu8UwN52nx5HbN9QA6YJRnVUaGw_6egqQYtq5FxA8
There is a pan and scan of the definitive collection master. What do you think they used for the 1995 vhs set. Although the only pan and scan version on Laserdisc happened in Hong Kong. And of course beyond Dark Jedi’s preservation of the VHS release there is no DVD, especially not official retail.
does that pan and scan of the definitive collection have the gaffe with the blue tie fighter lasers in TESB ?
^ Thank you ." simulcast in Dolby stereo "…I remember when they used to do that back in the days before most tvs were equipped with stereo sound . I saw the premiere of Billy Joel’s Uptown Girl via Friday Night Videos on network tv that way .
^ Thank you for updating this so the thumbnail shows ,I wasn’t sure how to gt it to show up.
^ Thank you for updating this thread and the Betamax thread so the thumbnail shows ,I wasn’t sure how to gt it to show up .
more info about the ON-TV service…https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ON_TV_(TV_network)
I posted this in oojason’s recent thread on Betamax , but think it fits here too (see that thread for context)
ON TV Star Wars Up Next & Star Trek II Premiere promos ON-TV was a pay per view tv subscription service in the early 80s in the United States… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Jtuh8Sz9JY
" VCRs did existed as far back as 1975 - and many people did ‘record’ the showings of Star Wars on TV onto a blank tape when the film was eventually aired on tv back in 1982 in the US (via PPV; something which only half a million people could access at the time)."
I was one of the lucky ones who got to see it on ppv ( pay per view ) . My folks had a subscription to the on-tv ppv service out of Chicago. The box was in their bedroom , so I could only watch it in there , though my older brothers and I could see the scrambled signal on the downstairs tv , which we got great amusement from watching late at night 😃 Sadly , we did not have a vcr at that time , as they were indeed very expensive .Here is an ad for the ON-TV Star Wars premiere that someone recorded back in the day and uploaded to Youtube , also featuring The Wrath Of Khan premiere , which is how I first saw that movie …https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Jtuh8Sz9JY the video says 1983 , but it was in fact 1982 when Star Wars premiered on ON-TV
I just popped my GOUT copy of Star Wars 77 into my blu ray player and displayed it on my 55 inch lcd flatscreen the other day . First time in a very long time that I have watched it ,and it looked atrocious on that . Hell , my letterbox 1992 VHS looks better on that tv . ( I tried it right after ) . The GOUT is a grainy mess in comparison . I also messed around with the settings on my tv and displayed each in both 4x3 for proper proportions ,and in zoom mode .I will have to take a look at these on my crt’s later to see if they look better .Looking back at some of the links at the top of this thread , I do think Mike Verta was right in his belief that there was artificial grain applied to this release to make it look sub standard .Also , when this release came out , a lot of people were saying these looked better than the laser disc preservations that were being made at the time .Is that due to the displays they were being watched on at the time ? A lot of people still had crt’s back then . Granted , the dvd image may be sharper , but I will take the softer look of VHS or Laserdisc over this grainy image any time . I did watch my 92 VHS letterbox copy on my 30 inch widescreen Samsung Slimfit HD CRT recently , and that looked spectacular and crisp and vibrant on it ,though the colors did not “pop” like on the 95 faces VHS , but it looked more like I remember it looking in the theater originally .I go back and fourth sometimes , but I now think this is my ideal way to watch it out of all the media formats I own . I will definitely have to see how the GOUT looks on that crt .
Greetings ScreamsfromtheVoid, just to ask, were you ever capable of testing those G.O.U.T. discs upon that aforementioned HD CRT screen; if so, did they fare samewise or worse than the letter-boxed VHS-cassettes?
~Ice~
Hi , thanks for asking , I did finally get around to checking it out , the GOUT dvd did look a lot sharper on my widescreen crt , and the grain was a lot less noticeable , but still there ,in the scenes on the blockade runner and when the droids arrive on Tatooine , but looks like more natural film grain here . The colors were more vibrant , as the GOUT is the 93 laserdisc transfer , as is the source of the 95 vhs faces set ( Though I am still not sure why the blue tie fighter lasers show up on TESB on the vhs and not the GOUT) . I prefer the colors of my letterbox 92 VHS over the 93 and subsequent versions . On the GOUT , playing on my widscreen crt , the colors are amped up a bit too much for my tastes in places , the skin tones appear a bit too orangeish and I noticed in the droid sale scenes , the blue on the legs of R5-D4 are an almost neon blue . I adjusted the tv settings to movie mode and it toned these issues down a little , it helped , but they were still noticeable . Another nice thing about the tv , is it has different widescreen modes , normal , panorama , wide and zoom . I have it set to wide and there is no window boxing on the image and no one looks stretched out like " taffy vision " . I did not notice picture info lost on the sides either . The sound on this tv is phenomenal , with deep bass and the black levels are fantastic . I love this tv and hope it keeps working , though it has developed a few problems in recent years , And I think it may be due to being moved around too much. There is slight phosphor burn in on the upper right hand corner of the screen and a noticeable buzzing noise an it recently started making a continuous ticking sound like an old clock .Probably needs new capacitors , but beyond my scope of knowledge to fix .Overall , even though the 92 letterbox vhs has a softer image , it still looks pretty crisp on this tv and I prefer it over the GOUT on this tv or any other tv .This is the Samsung Slimfit Widescreen HD CRT that I have…https://www.cnet.com/products/samsung-tx-s3082wh/ I would love to get a laserdisc player and the 89 widescreen disc an try it out n this tv .

yeah , I thought that was neat too , started to watch it not too long ago . I only wish they had Navajo subtitles as well , might be a good way to learn the language . I heard the now out of print DVD they put out years ago has Navajo subtitles . What they have on D+ seems to be the Macklunkey edition with the Navajo dub ported over .
maybe if we all stream the hell out of the content that they are giving us , they will put Droids on there too . Fingers crossed . Anthony Daniels also deserves to have his voice work on Droids available for all to enjoy again as well.
Good Evening All,
I am still individually colorizing the frames for the extended “hangar scene” from return of the jedi. There is some color bleed and missing color in some spots, but this is a work in progress that will take some time. This is what I have so far.
Once I am done coloring and cleaning all the frames as best possible, I will composite the millennium falcon matte painting behind the actors and add a little grain to somewhat blend it all together, and then render out a final video clip.
Benduwan is putting an together an extended cut of ROTJ. This will be my first real contribution to this project.
Comments and critique are welcomed.
^ this is looking good .
does Disney plus currently have From Star Wars To Jedi The Making OF A Saga on the platform ? And yes , give us the Droids we’re looking for please !
