<strong>The Mandalorian</strong> - a general discussion thread - * <em><strong>SPOILERS</strong></em> *
Time

Just watched episode 3 of The Mandalorian season 3 . This one was a mixed bag . Started out strong with great action and then in the middle it switched to follow other characters in what looked and played like a bad fan film with an enormous budget. I mean, yeah , the establishing shots and the incorporation of some of Ralph Mcquarrie’s art were great , but I kept getting distracted by the bad lighting on the actors and the bad framing in some shots . The photon fizzles were ridiculous too …light lollipops , really ? Then there was the ending with a cosplayer cult initiation .

I did like the production art at the end though and it looks like they missed the mark in capturing the look and feel of it . I would like to see an animated show that looks just like the production art now . Overall I would rate this episode a 3 out of 10 . And I have to agree with others on here that the forced medical procedures by the New Republic were fucked up .like a twisted version of conversion therapy . I can’t buy that these were the same people who fought a rebellion against the Empire . I don’t know who directed this episode , but I hope it’s a one off and gets better . Has me worried for how they will handle Thrawn when he inevitably shows up , either here or the Ahsoka series .

Another criticism I have is that in modern Star Wars , even the sequel trilogy , which I mostly enjoyed up until TROS ,except for the Canto Bight stuff in TLJ ,is that the aliens don’t feel alien enough . That’s something I appreciated about the original trilogy …Ben Burrt came up with all those wonderful alien languages that had strange sound effects layered underneath and subtitles were added for them . ( they mostly dropped the ball on that in the prequels too ) . Now we get aliens with hillbilly accents speaking English ( or Basic , galactic standard ,what have you ) .

Yeah , Admiral Ackbar spoke English ,but it had some nice guttural and reverb effects added to it which helped retain an alien quality to it . The Mon Cal in this episode could have used more of that .The aliens in recent shows have seemed more to me like Star Trek aliens in the way they are portrayed onscreen , sadly . even the legacy ones .

I think comparing this show to Andor is apples to oranges . Andor is the more intellectual political drama/thriller , Mando is more pulpy adventure /space western . This episode felt like filler before the meat of the story gets told this season . Not my favorite episode thus far , but I had fun with it anyway . It probably would have been better if those 2 episodes from BOBF were used to open the season here instead though . As for alien accents , I think the problem started way back in The Phantom Menace and they should have taken their cues from the original trilogy and had Ben Burrt come up with alien languages for all of the alien characters with subtitles . Yeah , There was a lot of dialogue for those characters in the prequels , but Jabba had a substantial role in ROTJ and that technique worked for him . They should have stuck with that approach throughout the whole saga . Also , in regards to this weeks Mandalorian episode , I’m still wondering why Swamp Thing made an appearance .

Was Lucas inspired by the Mandalorians to create the Clones in the Prequels Movies?
Time

There is also the novelization of The Empire Strikes Back by Donald F. Glut , which came out in 1980 , several years before that Marvel comic was released . It described Boba Fett thusly , “He was dressed in a weapon-covered, armored spacesuit, the kind worn by a group of evil warriors defeated by the Jedi Knights during the Clone Wars.”

Back in the day , I took this as gospel ,and always imagined that the Mandalorians would be uniform in appearance ,rather than having so many different colors and variations ,as is the case today . When the Death Watch first appeared in The Clone Wars animated series ,that is largely how I imagined them . I think it’s also plausible that Lucas read that description in the novel , or perhaps more plausible that Filoni brought it to his attention during story meetings .

I posted this in a thread I made a few months back , but having been made aware /reminded that this excellent thread/resource exists , it seems even more appropriate here ,as the article I linked to is one I did not see in the original post here … Gloria Katz and her husband Willard Huyck , who helped polish the dialogue and inject humor and many iconic and quotable lines into the first film http://episodenothing.blogspot.com/2018/12/gloria-katz-1942-2018-writer-who-gave.html

<em><strong>ANDOR</strong></em> - Disney+ Series - A General Discussion Thread
Time

“I’m condemned to use the tools of my enemy to defeat them.” Think I saw this coming a few episodes ago in the conversation between Luthen and Saw , which is what I alluded to in my previous post . I don’t care though ,as this was brilliant acting this week ! (Although , I’m not 100 percent sure I’m right about that plot point, but looking more likely to me now ) ,will have to keep watching to see how it plays out . Personally , based on this week’s episode alone , I think this show deserves an Emmy award . Best acting I have seen in Star Wars ANYTHING ! Not sure how they will top this episode going forward , but I am here for the ride . I was on the edge of my seat the whole episode . Bravo !

" We need the Empire to help , we need them angry , we need them coming down hard ." - Luthen to Saw in the previous episode . Well , maybe a red herring or grasping at straws here , but we never saw those 100 prisoners get eliminated , nor did Andor’s group of prisoners .They only heard about it from others . I wonder if Luthen has a contact in the prison . The medic who euthenized Ulaf maybe ? perhaps the guy who has been signing across the way ? Even Melshi perhaps ?

Did you think Dagobah was Yoda’s homeworld the prequels were made?
Time

I remember reading somewhere as a kid , I think it was the ESB storybook , that Dagobah did not appear on any star charts or maps and that the Force guided Luke there . Based on Luke saying something was familiar about the place in the movie , I assumed we would see him taken there for a brief time as a baby in the prequels ,but still thought Yoda just went into exile there like Kenobi did on Tatooine ,and that they both never always lived in those places . I do remember though ,that there was a piece of art that was published in the early to mid 90s ,that depicted a young Yoda being trained by a serpent like alien on Dagobah . This was before the prequels were being made ,so apparently ,there were some who thought what the op mused about .

Friendly reminder that discussing the politics presented in-universe is fine but real world politics is not allowed.

Noted , and also noted that I am not the one who brought that word into the conversation . Two wrongs don’t make a right however , so apologies on my part . Moving on , I thought episode 7 was great , though I had a hard time believing a certain character got so careless after everything that has happened so far . Kept thinking about how a one could learn to think quickly on their feet … Take some cues from Lando . Specifically , a scene in the original Marvel Star Wars comic issue 51 ,where Lando bribes some Stormtroopers with some " Narco Spice " to get them off his tail . I know , the comic has a different tone from the show …just struck me funny . I also like the way the director handled the shot compositions …felt very Star Wars to me .

Star Wars: Bookends - <em>A Prologue &amp; Epilogue to the Original Trilogy</em>
Time

Interesting ideas RogueLeader . I think the Last Jedi could easily be made to stand alone in an edit . All one needs to do is add the scene from Tros , with the falcon and all the citizens of the galaxy swooping in with a thousand ships to the end of TLJ . this way the audience can infer that the galaxy finally rose up in response to Luke’s actions at the battle of Crait. I think it would be easy to infer that the first order and Kylo were defeated and peace reigns once more in the galaxy . Could put a bit of text at the end to drive it home , but I think the audience wouldn’t need that much hand holding to get it . I personally consider TLJ the end of the Skywalker saga and that’s how I rationalize it in my head canon . There were things I enjoyed about Tros , but it went too far off the rails for me . I just consider it a fun popcorn movie and try to shut my brain off when I watch it .

STAR WARS EPISODE IV - 2019 SE 4K blu-ray Remastered (WIP)

Here:

Thank you , and thank you for adding that shot in with the others . Wow , the 2020 raw BD looks almost monochrome !They put in more detail at the expense of a lifeless image , and I can see how skewed the raw 2011 colors are now ,too magneta and the haze around the planet looks purple . I can better see what you were going for now . Looks great !

STAR WARS EPISODE IV - 2019 SE 4K blu-ray Remastered (WIP)

can you post a screen cap of the raw 2011 blu ray as it was initially released for further comparison ? The reason I ask is that that release had oversaturated colors and I felt the official 2020/ Disney plus release tried to compensate by swinging the pendulum a bit too far in the opposite direction …looks too faded . Of the three pics you posted , Adywans regrade of the 2011 looks perfect to me ,though the Rem 2020 in the middle has a bit more detail and crispness . Just trying to give some constructive feedback . I have not seen the 2011 official blu ray in a long time so would like to see an image of it alongside these to compare the saturation levels , color differences etc . This sounds like a worth while project and thank you for sharing .

The People Who Helped George Lucas shape the saga
Time

This is a thread for celebrating and discussing the contributions of the people who helped bring George’s vision to life ,especially the original film ,as well as other installments . I will kick it off with this, Gloria Katz and her husband Willard Huyck , who helped polish the dialogue and inject humor and many iconic and quotable lines into the first film

Just watched episode 4 …damn ! This show is awesome! Although, I have read a lot of articles saying there is no fan service in this series, I have seen a lot of it so far , but not the typical stuff for the most part, rather ,a lot of stuff drawn from the early EU stories .if you watch with subtitles, it’s even more apparent. In the case of the most recent episode, there’s also mention of a collector of things who is very similar to a character in the 2016 novel Bloodline

What is Your Preferred Watch Order, and Which Versions (Fan edits/official releases)?
Time

Hmmm , not sure I have a preferred order as it depends on my mood but I am currently thinking …

  1. Rogue One ,Blu Ray or dvd depending on which display I am watching on
  2. Star Wars , any theatrical version I currently have access to , Despecialized , GOUT , 92 Widescreen VHS
3.The Empire Strikes Back , same sources as 2
3.Vader’s Memories Fan edit , but stop right before the credits roll as the cabana music is out of place with the dark electronic score used throughout the movie …https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1AcBBpjkDg
4.Return Of The Jedi , same sources as 2 and 3
5.The Force Awakens Blu Ray or DVD depending on which display I am watching on
6.Solo A Star Wars Story dvd or blu ray
7.The Last Jedi ,dvd or blu ray
8.This motion comic which uses the comic art by fan comics artist Andrew Winegarner and the fan audio drama /script reading of the Duel Of The Fates script by Colin Treverrow …https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLthocxgVxm_yDA4lO355UzA-fgHvZqvNn

I will probably put Andor at the beginning when the show is complete .May even wait until then to do this watch order .
