this is all very interesting , as I stated however ,we are talking about the 1977 film and the 78 storybook with what says "full color photographs " on the cover . It is the comparison of those two things which is the subject of this topic . I would like to stay on that track but can see the merit in what you are saying .it just seems more suited to the theatrical cuts vs subsequent releases thread .

I get what you are saying , I use photographic resources from the movies in my own art but try to approach them with a painterly aesthetic and hone them to an illustrative quality , they aren’t one click solutions . I do agree about the new comics from the first year though and that is some of the stiffness I was talking about . If that is the approach , I would rather see something akin to Drew Struzan who traced photographic sources on a projector but understood how to draw and integrate the photographic sources to look natural in their environment and have texture .The examples in the uncanny valley article you posted look very unnatural . Part of that is that they are trying to combine two separate techniques , part pen and ink traditional comic art with digitally rendered photo realistic faces . As for going back to simplicity , I find these new comics far more simplistic and lacking depth whereas the old series was chock full of complex stories and depth , issue 76 being a prime example …the genocide of an entire aquatic and sentient alien species , save a few members , who cut themselves off from the rest of the galaxy and isolate themselves where they were once free and open . Or issue 86 which deals with a stormtrooper who is also a survivor of Alderaan who Leia convinces to switch allegiances only to have him be shot in the back by his C.O. at the end and die . deep stuff man ! I can watch a marathon of all the Star Wars movies and slot the Marvel comics in and not be bothered by 40 years of lore and they still work for me . There may be a few continuity hiccups but they are far and few between and a lot less than reconciling 90’s EU with the current canon . I don’t put much stock in canon anyway . I kind of pick and choose from all of it that works for me personally . I still think prose captions should be a part of modern comics though . Comics for the past few decades have been trying too hard to be movies . If I want to watch the movies , I now have unlimited access to them and will pop in a blu ray , vhs or dvd . I think the recent film adaptations are a prime example of this . There is no substance to them and the Last Jedi adaptation was atrocious and looked like a 12 year old drew it . I liked the movie though .

I have been disappointed with the new era of Marvel Star Wars overall so far . I think the first Vader comic storyline was ok and the artwork is ok and mostly movie accurate , but seems kind of stiff and I can read an issue of any of their lineup in ten minutes . I miss when comics were equally about WORDS and pictures and were narrated with caption boxes with beautiful prose .It took me about half an hour to read an issue of the old comic series and I felt like I was getting my moneys worth . a four issue story arc felt like I was watching a movie and took just as long . Now , I just check the new stuff out online in places where it is posted to be freely seen .Five bucks for a comic I can read in ten minutes is way too much ! And comics now are all close to five bucks . who the hell can afford to collect multiple issues anymore ?!

ok , I am a little confused here …we are talking about the 1977 film and the 78 storybook with what says "full color photographs " on the cover . It is the comparison of those two things which is the subject of this topic .speaking to the special edition vhs cover you posted and the youtube screengrab …you are right , there was too much pink in the 97 and 2004 special editions which was fixed on the 2011 bluray , and George may have meant for Mos Eisley to look like a cgi crapfest ,but I prefer the original film . That , however is a different topic .

^ Love that - looks very iconic and effective in it’s simplicity - something which would sit proudly on a shelf or display with other dvds, blu rays and collections etc.

Plus, with the border surrounding the actual image… anyone could quite easily adapt it for use with their own particular appealing/favourite piece of artwork.

Hope you do another couple more covers for the other parts of the Trilogy 😉

Sweet work, Oswarez 💥 👍

^ very cool ! is the drawing by Oswarez ? it looks like a Tom Jung poster concept that I remember seeing somewhere .Either way , it’s a very good package design and layout !

interesting but I am not sure this makes the case as to whether or not ALL of the storybook photos are production photos or film stills .One thought I had about print media is that everything that is reproduced on the page to make multiple copies requires printers ink and after multiple copies are made , the saturation of the ink may become less , or in older books , there may be an issue or error with the printing plates . I am guessing they have quality control control for these things but would imagine with a high volume print run , some would slip through the cracks .The second youtube screenshot you posted looks a lot like the Gout ( 2006 Bonus dvd disc of the original film ) to me .Other than desaturated color, I see no difference between the two images , and why does the youtube clip say Luke leaving Dagobah ? Is he flying backwards ? I see the lights of four engines which are on the back of the ship . He is flying towards the planet , not away from it 😃 and after re reading your post , it does seem that you do see some value in images in pre digital print media as a valid guide to being used as color reference for editors

this thread grew out of Dr Dre’s 4k color grading thread in which I proposed the idea of the storybook photos being used for color reference , some dismissed the idea out of hand as not relevant due to the storybook photos being on set production photos and not stills from the film itself.

I stated that I believe some of them are just that , but not all .The most obvious example being the shot of Vader without his cape on during the scene where he senses Kenobi’s presence . Some have used the 70s photo novels that were blown up from film negatives as examples of the plausability of my view that some of the photos are film stills and others have said they have studied it for years and denied the possibility.

This is the place to state your case by showing examples , which are open to debate , for or against the topic of whether or not they are all stills , all production photos ,or somewhere in between and why, or why not, using the storybook photos as a guide for things like hue , color temp , value etc has relevancy .lastly , the joke about calibrating the storybook was hilarious ! ok , let the debate begin …

fair enough , would the moderators object to me starting a thread about this topic so as not to further derail this thread ? also , my apologies to the op .I have not heard any thing regarding this issue from him . maybe he is on vacation ? and I am open to topic name suggestions

The OP has a new baby (or one on the way)! So the exact opposite of a vacation. 😛

I can’t imagine the mods would object to a new topic, though.

Yes, my little boy has been born. 😃 The discussion is interesting though, so a new topic would be great!

^ congratulations ! and thank you for seeing value in the topic proposed !

so I like to go to youtube and watch videos so I can unwind and tune out the news , politics etc , you know , escape from it all for a bit and then I get greeted by a message from cadet bonespurs loudly denouncing the entire Democratic party and a paid political ad saying text ( whatever number it is , I ain’t doing it )for the wall . .There is the option to close the ad but it is still there . Before this , every other ad always gave me the option to say not interested .Youtube was great when it was new , but has become a cesspool in the past few years , which is sad , because there is still some quality content there but a lot of it gets shoved down because of a lot of no talent hacks throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks . beyond that …fuck politics …all of it …don’t care what side of it anymore …it seems to have devolved into school yard antics and juvenile name calling across the board …the adults have left the building folks …I just wanted to unwind and now I just want a ticket off planet .

Lightyears A.K.A. Gandahar . A french animated film from the 80s that was dubbed into english and re cast in the U.S. with American actors . It is an adult animated movie in the vein of Heavy Metal . It is on Youtube . I have had it on vhs since 1988 and only recently saw the French version with English subtitles which is also on youtube . The original French version has a completely different musical score which I prefer .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBrysnbRj6w and the original …https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=My7yQaP5FlM

I find your argument vague and unconvincing .And I actually said that I believe that SOME are production photos but not all . Again , where is the PROOF ? all I have been presented with is conjecture and opinion so far .And regardless , the colors in the bottom image look great , why not use the storybook photos for color reference ? The picture on the bottom looks far clearer to me and has a lot of natural dusky sunlight showing on Luke .I have heard film makers refer to sunset shots like this as " magic hour " and I see it far more clearly on the storybook photo than the grainy , uncleaned deleted footage which is just one screenshot you posted among dozens which make up the scene on film .If I wanted to make a painting , or even re create a cleaned up or restoration of that deleted scene , I would definitely refer to the storybook photo for things like color temperature , saturation , hue , value etc .

My boss just texted my brother saying I was supposed to be at work which he NEVER informed me of, and because I wasn’t there he doesn’t me to show up tomorrow. He’s already relegated me to one or two days a week, but now he’s just being an asshole. I gotta jump ship to different job ASAP.

^ that sucks man . some people have to knock others down to make themselves look good . What do you do ? do you like the job ?
