Best Explanation Of Mary Sue Issue

I had a thought about Rey lifting the Rocks at the back of the rebel base on Crait …there are real world examples of people having enough adrenaline flow through them and enabling them to do superhuman feats like lifting cars in an emergency to save a trapped child etc. I believe it was something like this with Rey , everyone she held dear was trapped in that base and in immediate peril so adrenaline rush +the force =superhuman feat x 10. She did not have time to hesitate or think about whether she could do it or not , unlike Luke when lifting the X-Wing on Dagobah in a safe and controlled environment .She believed she could do it , and did not stop to question it . okay , inevitable rebuttal in 3…2…1…

Though I can’t speak for everyone here ,I would very much welcome your feedback .See, this is now the 21st century, and the boys club is over and the no girls allowed signs have been removed from the treehouse …

I would say the universe is full of them. We really only get two in the OT, Leia and Mon Mothma, but both are obviously people to be reckoned with. But all the EU and comics I’ve read, from the Brian Daley books on are full of more. I can’t think of a single classic stereotype out there. Plus we end up with Mara Jade and Jaina Solo. While the ST has wiped all of them out, Qi’ra is awesome. Jynn is great but with flaws (she doesn’t shape the story until the mid-way point). Hera and Sabine are great and get some nice depth over the series. And I think everyone has been faithful to Carrie’s portrayal of Leia.

^Yes ! even Carrie herself , who assisted with the script to The Last Jedi .

yeah , The original Zahn trilogy was great and Mara was a good character ( though I suspect that Zahn borrowed heavily from Shira Brie in the original marvel series when creating her ) . As for Leia being a damsel in distress , She turned that trope on it’s head and actually ended up taking charge ,“into the garbage shoot flyboy !” and during the swing across the chasm , she blasted her fair share of stormtroopers.plus, she is the best shot out of all of them …she never misses throughout the OT.

^ and of the examples above , Leia is still the only one in the OT that had more than approximately one minute or less of screen time . I thought the deleted female pilots were from Return Of The Jedi and not the original film .Oh ,and I would add Nomi Sunrider from the Tales Of The Jedi comics to the list of strong female characters…http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Nomi_Sunrider

There’s no such thing as a strong female character; only a strong character.

good point . I am going to leave the title of the thread as is though as I feel female characters in Star Wars movies were grossly under represented in the OT…Leia being the only main female character , and it’s nice to see this changing and seeing more of a female presence to give more avatars for the female audience to plug themselves into .

STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED **

Originally, GL himself said the timespan was three years between each movie. Then, when Secrets of the Empire came out, the time between Empire & Jedi was changed to one year.

That always bothered me, as Yoda told Luke he had to stay with him to complete his training. Then Luke went off on his own and was able to do 25 years worth of Jedi training (Obi-Wan was knighted as a Jedi Knight at 25) in one year all by himself. He also tells Luke that only a fully trained Jedi can face off with Vader, then tells him in Jedi he has to confront Vader to be a Jedi Knight. I know it’s all because when Empire came out the plan was to do 6 or 9 movies, and then Lucas had to wrap it all up in one move.

There’s a great video on Youtube where a guy tracks down all the old articles about Star Wars being a 9 or 12 movie run. There are quotes with Lucas and Gary Kurtz talking about Luke’s sister being a completely different person on the other side of the galaxy. She was to get her own trilogy and then Luke and his newfound sister would team up to fight the Emperor. There was also talk of Luke killing Vader and taking his place, and his sister would bring him back to the light side. It’s a very interesting video if you can track it down.

^ yeah , this is why , even if it’s not canon , I prefer to go with the notion that 3 years elapse between films , especially between Empire and ROTJ . It gives more time for Luke to develop his powers on his own ( you can see the progression in the old Marvel comics ) and when he shows up in ROTJ his being an Uber powered Jedi is not such a stretch compared to 6 months to a year between movies . And people harp on Rey for these reasons …

^ that was what was established in the Legends canon , not sure if it has been contradicted yet . it is not stated how much time passes in the films themselves . as an Original Marvel Star Wars fan , I always considered the three years between movies in real time to be the time elapsed . but that is my personal preference.

This. When your relationship with Star Wars consists largely of railing against Star Wars, you’re doing Star Wars wrong.

^^Agreed, joe!

Which is sort of my gripe with stuff like Star Wars Theory and his fan film. I love fan films, and Lucasfilm has been doing Fan Films awards for over a decade. It’s definitely supposed to be a thing of love for the franchise. But what ST Theory has done feels like it is coming from a place of hate for Lucasfilm. A big thing of his, and other YouTubers like Geeks and Gamers, is that they constantly criticize the new movies and Lucasfilm, and basically ST Theory makes this as a way of saying “The new movies suck, THE FANS can do it better.” And naturally a ton of comments are like, “This is SO MUCH BETTER than The Last Jedi.”

And of course people still criticize Lucasfilm and think it is crazy that he can’t make any money of a fan film. Of course he can’t, but now they are the villains when people have been making fan films just for the love of the franchise for decades with no complaints.

And like this video Darth Muffy shared with us. It has like 1 Million views. I guess critical clickbait gets the $$. But monetized criticism has, in my opinion, generated negativity in entertainment in general.

I don’t know. At least growing up I was oblivious to the prequel bashing. I was able to enjoy the movies outside that bubble for the most part. I hope kids nowadays aren’t having that problem, like being told they’re wrong for liking these new movies. But I feel like a sizable audience for these kind of videos are preteens/young adults, so they are growing up in a warzone of arguments. It sucks that a lot of my memories of these past few years with the new movies have been filled with negativity like this. Even going to see TFA and TLJ in theaters with friends, some of them just complained the whole time. They couldn’t even let anyone else enjoy it. I’m definitely just going to go see IX with my father, since we’re both happy with these new movies.

Sorry for the rant. Just get tired of this stuff man. I know this has little to do with the point of your post, Muffy. I think Rey could’ve been written a little better, but I just think the whole Mary Sue argument is a tool haters use to justify their disdain for these new movies.

^this . +1 ! I also think it is pretty gracious of Lucasfilm to have allowed fan films to even be made and to not have come down very hard on fan edits as well . I worry that these people bashing the films constantly with clickbait videos will eventually ruin it for everyone .Sharts Of The Past .er , I mean Shards, has indeed been presented with a we can do it better attitude imho.

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

I guess I am in the minority …I have really enjoyed a lot of modern 3d movies over the past ten years . I like how it is more about depth and the feeling of being able to reach into the screen . Reminds me of the old view master reels but in motion . I saw the 75th anniversary edition of the Wizard Of Oz back in 2013 in Imax post converted this way and it was amazing . I really got a sense of the scale of the sets and the Matte paintings and felt more immersed in the world . I prefer this to the old analog 3d where shit just popped out at you and looked like cardboard cut outs , with a few exceptions …I did enjoy StarChaser The Legend Of Orin , but even then , I had to kind of squint sometimes to make it work .

Thoughts on Star Wars Posters
Time

thank you , I think so too ,and I would not call the Special Edition Struzan Posters crap , regardless of the mixed up photo references . They are very good compositions and all three together make a nice triptych that encapsulate the spirit of the whole original trilogy . It is also a design concept he carried over to the prequel posters . I like the Phantom Menace poster best out of the prequel posters , the Attack Of The Clones poster is ok in my opinion and I found the Revenge Of The Sith poster underwhelming . All are drawn well but I prefer the Revenge Of The Sith Video Game poster …https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0462553/ to me , it seems more epic and dynamic .I do prefer the original OT posters over the special edition though , the ones represented on the original vhs releases .

I’m not trying to be sexist, but to be fair I honestly never liked gender-swaps. I get it, it’s supposed to make women more equal to men, which is a great thing, but they’re surpassing equal by stealing from men. Honestly, it’s better to make original female characters, y’know? What if they made Wonder Woman Wonder Man or made Ripley from Alien a man? It wouldn’t really work.

They’ve feminized Doctor Who and Ghostbusters already, and now I’ve heard that Dorian Gray’s getting a feminist remake, and on top of that, I heard of this new movie that recently came out called Ladies in Black

actually ,there is a Wonder Man , he has been around since the 60’s…https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonder_Man

The original Marvel Star Wars series
Time

I get what you are saying about some people being obsessed with continuity nowadays , what gets me is that a lot of comic companies , especially DC , reboot their continuity just about every ten years , so to me , it’s kinda pointless to bitch about these things .While the early Star Wars material is what I favor , I do like some 90’s Eu and beyond and some of the connectivity like Tales Of The Jedi linking up with Dark Empire and later material etc . and I love the Heir To The Empire trilogy and Thrawn Duology . I think it got overblown after the New Jedi Order though and the cast of characters got too large and hard to keep up with , so I lost interest . Now that I think of it , this is kind of the same thing that some diehard old EU fans are upset about with the sequel trilogy …
