The original Marvel Star Wars series
Time

ah , here it is …according to this site , the blurb/solicitation was in Marvel Age number 41 , which gave a description of what was originally intended to be issue 107 …http://classiccomics.org/thread/1039/star-wars-marvel-reviews-confessor?page=78&scrollTo=191103… " but a clue as to the story that she originally intended to tell in this issue can be found in an early solicitation for Star Wars #107 in Marvel Age #41. The listing describes a completely different adventure, in which Luke Skywalker is hunted on a frontier world, by a number of different assassins, all intent on becoming known as the man who killed the legendary Jedi Knight. This early solicitation also reveals that the issue was originally meant to be inked by Ken Steacy, presumably before Whilce Portacio was brought in to help with the extensive re-tooling of the artwork needed to accommodate Duffy’s hastily rewritten series finale."

I want to believe #108 will be a faithful throwback to the Marvel Star Wars of yesteryear, but the cynic in me suspects they’ll make it as generic and throwaway as most of the rest of Marvel’s recent output.

^ I kind of agree with this , apart from the Simonson cover , not a single one of those interior artists worked on the original series except for Kerry Gamill and that was only in a very limited capacity . I agree with the above poster who said they should continue Jo Duffy and Cindy Martin’s story . I even made a fan cover imagining how 108 would play out with Bey And Dani, which you can see here…https://www.deviantart.com/screamsinthevoid/art/Original-Marvel-Star-Wars-continues-764845812
another factor to the cancellation , I believe , is that Marvel was launching their New Universe line of comics at the time and wanted to free up resources for that .Still , pretty cool to see that new Walt Simonson cover and the return of some old friends .

Anyone else totally disregard Leia being Luke's sister?
Time

yeah , this is an old argument . It is clear that George Lucas never originally planned for Luke and Leia to be siblings . Every piece of early Eu ran with the idea of a romantic connection between Luke and Leia . Splinter of the Minds Eye , which George consulted with Alan Dean foster on , and was intended to be a sequel movie if Star Wars was not as successful , ran with the idea . The Marvel comics of the OT era also did , even for a while after Empire came out . So , it is definitely there . There was no inbreeding because they were never originally intended to be siblings .In 1980 , my friends and I had conversations wondering who Luke would end up with . I thought it would have been Luke …wanted it to be . As an awkward kid , I related more to Luke and it was wish fulfillment for him to get the girl over the , bad boy ,jock ,cocky guy that Han was .If you watch the documentary From Star Wars To Jedi , Lucas talks about how he needed a reason for Luke to snap on Vader when hiding under the stairs and until that moment , he did not realize it was staring him in the face in form of Leia being his sister . So that was when that plot point came along .

If you need to B*tch about something... this is the place
Time

the last time I got an unwanted call , I decided to have some fun with it . The young lady asked for my zip code and I told her it was 8675309 . She started typing and then asked for it again three times . She then asked which city I lived in and I told her, "Ligma " , she said , “Ligma ?” and I said yeah , “Ligma Balls .” She then said have a nice day and hung up .

1975 Ship Models - Visible for 1st time
Time

I am remiss in that I forgot to say thank you for sharing these earlier . The link you provided was not working for me earlier but now that I have tried it again , I can see that the skyhopper model was indeed the one Luke played with at the beginning of the film. I also love that Ralph Mcquarrie used your Y-Wing in his production paintings and now we know the source of the acronym for the Tie Fighter ( twin ion engine ).It is amazing to me that we can still learn new things about the original film over 40 years later. Thank you sir , you are an inspiration !

Welcome ! I first saw your work in the book From Concept To Screen To Collectible by Steve Sansweet . Still have and treasure it and it was wonderful to see your models there as well. I especially like how your Star Destroyer really has the feel of a naval aircraft carrier .There is also a really neat concept of a landspeeder in that book . In the pictures above , the x-wing looks very sleek and reminds me a bit of a formula 1 race car . Is the Skyhopper model the same one Luke plays with in the film ?

There is a snowstorm happening where I live in Northwest Indiana

You too, Screams? Lake, Porter, or LaPorte County? (Guessing one of the first two since it doesn’t seem to be too bad here in LaPorte County.)

Porter .It pretty much let up now but Lake effect is supposed to happen later tonight . It’s unusual that we get more snow than Laporte though .Nice to meet a fellow region rat !

Strong Female characters in the Star Wars universe

I wouldn’t classify Rey, Holdo, Rose or Phasma as strong characters per se.

Rey-
She is an exceptionally strong person. Her life on Jakku has been hard, but she is still kind to others. She believes in doing what’s right. I attribute her success using the Force to her character. She has demonstrated a strong will and determination. Where we’ve seen others profess that it cannot be done or complain that life isn’t fair, she always believes in herself and her ability to overcome the challenges. Just because she perseveres through adversity, doesn’t mean she hasn’t experienced it. From her abandonment on Jakku and hard life of a scavenger, being pursued and captured by Kylo, seeing Han killed and Finn badly injured, the unwillingness of Luke to train her, further rejection from Kylo. She just keeps going. She is like the star QB. It doesn’t matter if the previous play went poorly. There’s no time to dwell on that. Just line up and execute this play. Just play this down, and then the next. She makes the people around her better.

Holdo-
I have no problem with her not wanting to sit down and explain every decision to a recently demoted Poe. You think an Admiral feels obligated to hold everyone’s hand and walk them through everything just to get their approval?

Phasma-
She is a villain, but is a very strong character. She commands the respect of those around her and is an intimidating foe. She makes a lot out of the limited screen time we get to see her.

Rose-
Here is a post I made previously regarding Rose:
Rose Tico holds the entire movie together.

At the end of The Force Awakens, Finn had made some progress, but this arc was far from over. He cared about Rey enough to overcome his fears and accompany Han and Chewie to Starkiller in an effort to rescue her. But he wasn’t honest about his reasons for going. He exaggerated his knowledge of Starkiller because as he told Han, he was just there for Rey. He didn’t care about the Resistance, or their cause.

Finn meets two people in The Last Jedi who have a profound effect on him. Rose is in agony over the loss of her sister, yet is still holding to her ideals and devoted to the Resistance. She has lost everything but will simply not quit. Then in stark contrast he meets DJ who has no convictions at all. Finally the light bulb comes on and Finn takes a side. He faces off with the embodiment of his greatest fear in Phasma and pronounces himself “Rebel” scum. He is fully on board now and is a different person by the time they reach Crait.

Finn is so gung-ho, in a display reminiscent of Poe’s previous unwillingness to follow orders, he tries to take on the First Order all by himself. Rose saves him because she believes the way to win is not by throwing your life away, but by living to fight another day, obviously informed by the loss of her sister.

Poe learns to respect authority before he can be in a position of authority and a true leader. Rey goes from seeking to identify herself through others to being comfortable with who she is and understands her place in the galaxy. There is just so much character development and wonderful storytelling. The Last Jedi is a great movie.

^Very well articulated and I especially like your take on Rose being informed by the loss of her sister . That is something I did not consider until now , but it makes a lot of sense to me .

Best Explanation Of Mary Sue Issue
Time

that’s the thing though ,she starts TLJ in a place of doubt , " I need someone to show me my place in all this ." In the end ,she has cast that doubt aside .She literally has no time to doubt or question her abilities in the moment where she lifts the rocks or people will die . I am not sure what you meant by it happens off screen . If you are referring to her thoughts , I suppose that could be the case but I don’t see how that is relevant . other than comparing it to Luke expressing doubt about lifting the x-wing . And having her use two hands would be to weaken her character in my opinion .
