Looking for recordings of the original trilogy on TV (with commercials)
Time

The recording you are talking about was from the Sci Fi channel when they first aired the wide screen version of the OT . It was hosted by Billy Dee Williams in 1995 , a few years earlier in 1993 , Carrie Fisher hosted the first marathon of all 3 movies in full screen on the channel . This site hasn’t been updated since 2012 , but there is a contact email at the bottom of the page which may or may not work . Good resource for what it contained though …http://noneinc.com/SWSFCFBDW/swsfcfbdw-faq.html
There are also snippets of these hosting segments on youtube .

Also , there are people out there who have kept recordings for decades , a couple years ago , I got one off ebay that was a VHS recording from HBO in 1987 , from the same month they first showed Return Of The Jedi . It also had Police Academy 2 and a few episodes of The Hitcher on it , as well as some HBO promos for that month’s offerings between shows . The person who had it started the recording at the 20th century fox fanfare , so sadly the HBO intro , feature presentation and ratings card didn’t get recorded at the start but are on there for Police Academy 2 . The image quality is not so great but is passable on a CRT TV . The audio is very low volume on it though . Probably recorded in long play mode . One interesting thing to note is that the pan and scan cropping on Jedi is a bit different to other full screen vhs home video releases I have seen , at least in the opening shot . In this HBO airing , the camera pans left to show the second Death Star when it is first seen .

another thing that may be useful is to look for VHS tapes , " sold as blanks " on places like EBAY etc . A lot of them have multiple movies and shows per tape , but its a bit of a crap shoot . I tend to zoom in on the tape labels and would contact the seller for more information .

New Lucas interview 2: 'Insists Unaltered Versions Of The OT Will Never Be Released'

They have claimed a stop motion creature would replace the actor in 1977, but Phil Tippet didn’t get instruction on designing Jabba as a ‘Sidney Greenstreet’ type character until later…

Yeah , and there’s something suspect about the whole narrative . In the 1983 Documentary , From Star Wars to Jedi The Making A Saga , they go over it and show a part of the scene as originally shot with Decan Mullholland and then show a storyboard of what the intended creature effect of Jabba was supposedly going to look like , superimposed over the human figure on the storyboard . Giving the impression that it was an archival piece of artwork from the time of the shooting of the original film , except if you look closely , you can see what appears to be Salacious Crumb on the ground next to Jabba ! The little guy was never talked about , seen ,or mentioned until 1983.

Telease Inc. - MAAST - "The Television Technology for the 80's" (1980) May be useful for preservationists
Time

Thought this might be useful for preservation projects . The clips at the beginning appear to be from the original making of Star Wars special , but the color grading looks different to me except for the snippet of the droids storytelling bit that was in that special . This promotional tape was never aired , but was recorded on September of 1980 , years before Star Wars hit VHS or subscription television ( my first time seeing the movie was in September of 1982 when it debuted on a subscription pay tv service in the U.S. called ON-TV )

" Here’s an interesting promotional tape for the MAAST (Multiple Audio Addressable Secure Television) system by Telease. This was meant for pay-TV channels for cable and satellite television in the U.S. and around the world.

We start off with a look of the push-button app of MAAST, juxtaposed with clips of the first “Star Wars” movie, switching between English and other languages. "

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION
Time

Wishing you a speedy recovery Adywan , and sorry for your loss Ronster . Getting older sucks sometimes . I lost several friends and family in the past 6 years and 2 years prior I had a surgery to remove a part of my right lung due to a rare infection , as well as being diagnosed with type 2 adult onset diabetes . In my early 50s now and recovered well and managing . I dearly miss those who have passed , but know they will always be with me and a part of me .

What is the best way to convert modern media to VHS?
Time

To clarify , I use a VHS/DVD recorder and burn the vhs recording to a dvd and then run that dvd on my laptop using VLC allowing me to play with the aspect ratio . One could repeat the process for further refinement . Might help to add in a retrotink scaler and something like topaz ai to clean it up . Haven’t tried it but would like to if I had the cash to buy those tools

What is the best way to convert modern media to VHS?
Time

Not sure about the best way , but I have tinkered around a bit using an HDMI to RCA converter running from my laptop to the input of my VCR . VLC media player has several options to play around with the aspect ratio . Takes some playing around with . I have had better results doing things like using full screen DVDs through a dvd recorder that can bypass copy protection . A starting point may be something like what is in this video , where he got the sequel trilogy onto vhs to fill a crt tv for the full screen …https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNC3R4JGlNE

The Acolyte (live action series set in The High Republic era) - a general discussion thread
Time

Idk…guess I will reserve judgment for when I actually see the show ,but was not impressed with the trailer and agree with the previous assesments so far on the flat look . Biggest thing that took me out of it was the fight scenes lifted straight out of The Matrix . Cool that Carrie Anne Moss is in the show , but all I could see was Trinity in a Jedi Robe . That " bullet time " effect has been copied to death by movies and shows since the Matrix first came out . Sure ,this is supposed to be the Jedi in their prime , but the choreography could be done another way . The show needs to distinguish itself from the style of everything else in my opinion . Give me a good story any day over edgy, cool and flashy fight scenes . Even with older stuff like the look of the old republic games , I felt the tech and look could have been more unique to reflect those much older time periods , instead of showing ships and armor etc , that didn’t look much different at all from later time periods . What I would love to see is a show that goes much further back in time and has a look akin to the original Tales Of The Jedi comics as drawn by Chris Gossett . Now that would be unique .

Like many others, I’ve lost so much enthusiasm for Star Wars over the past few years. In an attempt to revive my excitement for the saga, I’ve decided to dive head first into the old Marvel Star Wars series.

I envy you getting to read this series all the way through for the first time and look forward to your further reviews . Great scans by the way ! I think you are in for a real treat . While there were some duds along the way , the series was a hell of a lot of fun and also had some very serious and poignant stories ,especially between TESB and ROTJ , as well as post ROTJ ,with issues like 92 and 86 . Anyway ,as you go along , I think you will find that a lot of these comics fit very well around the OT films . The first time I read the issues between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back , when I got to watching the scene in Empire when Luke says farewell to Han ,just before the battle of Hoth ,that scene had a lot more resonance for me . Due to the comics filling in the 3 year gap, I really got the sense that these two had a long history of adventures together . It’s also fun seeing the writers come close to adding things that ended up in the later OT films after TESB , going so far as a forest world , small furry aliens on hang gliders , speeder bikes ,and even what basically amounted to a second Death Star ( with some modifications mandated by Lucasfilm ) !

Daisy Ridley excited for “fun direction” of new STAR WARS film (YouTube)

I’m glad she is excited to return . Also glad to hear her praise of Sharmeen Obaid’s documentary experience . Wasn’t there something about George Lucas making the original Star Wars in a documentary style ? Seems like this may be in good hands , between the lead , the director and the writer , I am optimistic . Idk , we will see . anyway , looking forward to seeing Star Wars in theaters again soon .

I got the reprint of the comics adaptation for Star Wars, Empire and Jedi that was given away with the 2006 DVD sets. I wanted to get these to see if they are recolored or as i have been told the original book just reprinted.

They are recolored , not the original colors that were shown in the original Marvel run . This is actually a reprint of the recoloring of all 3 adaptations done by Dark Horse in 1994 . I have all of these as well as the 2006 dvd pack ins . In 94 , it was the first time they were digitally recolored ,and they published each movie adaptation over 2 issues apiece , with new cover art by Al Williamson , Cam Kennedy and Adam Hughes . The back cover of the a new hope adaptation that came with the 2006 dvd was used as the second cover for the 94 release . All they did for the 2006 pack ins was to put each movie adaptation issue from 94 together as single books and in the case of ANH , replace the original splash page with a white text crawl against a black star field .

Awesome thread BoShek !!! A couple things to add to the thread …In Star Wars official poster monthly from 1978 , the Storm Troopers were described as clones ,

" The creation of an Imperial Stormtrooper. A cloned man is one of a group of genetically identical humans, an assembly-line product. He is a thinking man, but he serves a specific purpose and no other. A Clone has no mother; only his trainers, and he accepts his fate because he believes it is inevitable. A Clone is, physically and emotionally, a normal man. He simply has no human rights and no name. He is the property of the Emperor. Soldiers fully formed in the growth tanks quickly proved impractical. Scientists found themselves the befuddled fathers of 12-stone blubbering idiots. A foetus is now removed from the hatchery after a gestation period of 60 weeks and is delivered immediately into the hands of its trainers."

A scan of said article can be found here…https://imgur.com/08OBzmC

Also , I have a Starlog magazine , issue 236 , celebrating the 20th anniversary of Star Wars in 1997 . There is an article in it speculating about the then upcoming prequel trilogy . It has some cartoony illustrations of a group of Jedi Knights all wearing Luke’s ROTJ garb ,mentions them fighting Mandalorians ,and gives a breakdown of how they thought each movie may go . Unfortunately , my copy is buried in a box somewhere in my walk in closet under a pile of old electronics . So if anyone has a copy of that issue ,it would be great to post it here with scans . I couldn’t find the article online anywhere . ( too bad the internet archive took down their collection of Starlog that was on there a few years back )

Also , as the prologue of the original novel mentioned the Journal Of The Whills , I always thought that might have been the title of Episode 1 and we would have gotten an explanation of who they were . One thing I appreciated about Rogue One was the inclusion of Chirrut and Baze as Guardians of the Whills , nodding back to that .

Implied starting date of the Empire from OT dialogue
Time

yotsuya said:

Well, completely ignoring the PT, I get the following.

Luke. In ANH we find that Vader hunted down the Jedi. Luke’s father died (in ANH there is nothing linking Anakin and Vader). So we can come to the conclusion that the events where the Empire rose were not earlier than Luke’s conception. Anakin knew of Luke’s at least impending birth before he died.

Leia. Kenobi severed her father in the Clone Wars. This doesn’t tie specifically to Leia’s age, but does pin down her father being of the generation of the Clone Wars.

Kenobi. He speaks of the Jedi, before the Empire, before the Dark times. There is no clear link between what he says and the Clone Wars, only that he and Anakin both fought in the Clone Wars. So Kenobi, Anakin, and Leia’s father were all in the clone wars in some capacity.

All of that agrees with the PT.

In TESB we get a more firm timetable of the Empire with Vader being Luke’s father. We do hear Luke thinking Dagobah is very familiar, but we don’t get any reason why. From the context of the film it was most likely a force vision.

In ROTJ we find out that Luke and Leia are twins. This firmly plants the start of the Empire at their birth. Why? Vader did not know Luke had a sister which means he was not present at the birth. So the event that turned Vader and started the Empire happened between conception and birth of the twins.

We still have no indication of when the Clone Wars took place. It could be a month before or a decade before.

From the actors it is also hard to guess. Alec Guiness was was 63 when ANH was released. Sebastian Shaw (true he wasn’t cast yet) was almost 72. Phil Brown was 61 and Shelagh Fraser was 56. So Alec, Phil, and Shelagh were contemporaries and from the dialog in ANH, Sebastian was cast to show how the Dark Side had aged and warped him. Anakin was Kenobi’s student. When you look at the ages in Attack of the Clones, the relative ages of Kenobi, Owen and Beru are not that different, 31, 27, and 18) from the ANH cast (63, 61, 56 about 30 years older). So Anakin was young enough for Kenobi to train (also remember that Yoda said Luke was too old in TESB, so Anakin would be younger than Luke… by a lot). So Sebastian’s advanced age much have had a reason beyond Anakin actually being older than Kenobi.

So from the casting and the dialog just in the OT, the Clone Wars had to have taken place somewhere between 30 and 20 years before ANH. Officially it was 22-19 years before. So all the timings of the PT fit with what we see in the OT, except the age of the actors. But there is also nothing in the movies indicating how long the Clone Wars lasted so adding in another 5 to 10 years of war doesn’t break anything. Also, Ahsoka appears to have grown up considerably more than 3 years, and she is introduced when the Clone Wars are well underway (Anakin was still a Padawn when they started). So the official timeline seems too short and doesn’t really fit with the ages of the actors cast in both the OT and PT.

As a side note, Jimmy Smits was much older than the others in AOTC, but he was contemporary by the time he appeared in Rogue One (he was 61 when it was released).

^ based on the above ,an idea popped in my head …it seems logical to me that Anakin should have been 15 years old at the start of the prequel trilogy . That would have made him fairly substantially younger than Luke at the start of his journey in the OT , without straying into the kiddie territory with Anakin being 9 years old in episode 1 as released . I wonder if Lucas had the thought that making Anakin 15 at the start of the PT would be straying too close to Dune ,what with Paul Atreides being 15 in the first book and being part of a chosen one prophecy in the sense of Paul being a prophecized messiah . Maybe he realized how much he borrowed from Dune in the OT already ( among many other sources ) , looked over at his son who was a toddler at the time , and decided on placing Anakin at 9 years old as a happy medium between 9 and 15 so that it wouldn’t be too on the nose derivative of Dune . Probably a stretch ,but I find it fun to think about . I would still like to have had Anakin start out at 15 in episode one anyway . I vote 30 to 25 years before ANH as the start date of the Empire .

Star Wars: Clone Wars [ Micro-Series ] - Original Broadcast Format / Restoration (WORK IN PROGRESS)
Time

cool project ! I like the colors on the first cover you posted more ,but I can appreciate the nostalgic vibe you were probably going for with the second iteration . I loved this series when it first came out . I have fond memories of watching it on the official Star Wars website , on a Windows desktop with a CRT monitor . When the series was finished, and both DVDs were released , I enjoyed watching it as a complete movie . This felt more like it captured the feel of Star Wars than any of the live action prequel movies did to me .
