Thought on de-SE'ing the DVD
Time
S7en, I got your file, by the way, but can't get it to play yet. I'll keep working on it.

Assuming it survived the upload:
If you haven't already tried it, like the earlier shaw/ghost clip, you could try renaming it to an .mpg file to play it.
As a .VOB file I only windows media player successfully played it. When I try the .vob in powerdvd initially it doesn't want to play, but i found if you click in the time/progress bar when its trying to open it, for somereason it decides to work.
Yet when renamed as a .mpg file it plays it with no problem at all. Weird.

Hope you have some success with it.

Thanks mebejedi, I'm biting the bullet and uploading to yousendit. I've tried uploading a few files with youshareit and never got it to work with files larger than a few MB - the uploads never seem to finish uploading for some reason, and i've tried it using firefox and EI and still no joy. So fingers crossed with yousendit. Was hoping to share it with everyone, but yousendit will have to do. At least it'll be released into the wild then

I've now tried rapidshare, youshareit and yousendit, are there any other free file hosts people would recommend?

UPDATE: The file is now up on yousendit. PM's are on the way.

Idea & Info: Return of the Ewok - on Hyperspace
Time
You might want to read this thread: http://www.originaltrilogy.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=9&threadid=1836&STARTPAGE=3

With details and alternative links to the file. i.e. alt.binaries.starwars, demonoid torrent, or PM me. It's also been seen on the edonkey network.

PS Its not the whole 24 minute film, looks like Hyperspace have only released an edited 4 minute film version containing highlights of the full thing. Unless anyone knows different?

If anyones interested I've made a copy of the Shaw/Anakins Ghost ending from the Jedi SE 1997 G'Kar dvd - AKA German HDTV version. It's in PAL format, and while not in fact from an HDTV broadcast, it is true anamorphic from a digital broadcast, and is probably going to be the best quality/resolution version of the clip you're going to find.

I've uploaded it to rapidshare, here: ROTJ Shaw Ending
(scroll down page, click on 'Free' where it says 'Select your download:')

FYI I used MPEG2CUT http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=MPEG2Cut
to simply clip out the last 30 seconds of the movie. Its approx 16MB. If its retained the original soundtracks then it should have a 5.1 German audio, 5.1 English Upmix, and English Stereo.
You may want to rename the file from .VOB to .mpg as some players don't seem to like the VOB version.

Compared to the 2004 releases the GKar 1997 versions - and probably the similar French Reivax versions look like the best bet for de-SE'ing the Trilogy, as they're (virtually) DVD quality haven't had their colours mucked about with like the 2004 versions.
Having seen the detail in Moth3r's version of ANH, I'm thinking this could be a good candidate for editing with these 1997 SE discs. Plus they're both PAL of course.

Info: Interesting Video Finds Alternate Return Of The Jedi Dialogue
Time
jaymanchu, if the star wars rarities discs you're downloading are the ones from sladinki007.net, then the Shriver/Hamill interview is the third thing on 'Rarities 1' DVD - "PM Magazine - Jedi preview - Maria Shriver interviews Mark Hamill"
Here's some stills that indicate the quality - theres some interference on the video, and a hum on the sound.
Shriver interviewing Hamill 1
Shriver interviewing Hamill 2
Shriver interviewing Hamill 3

And here's a menu shot - ocpmovie, does this look like your rarities disc?
Rarities 1 menu - page 1

Jay, on a different note, you wouldn't have a copy of the r2 and c3po anti-smoking commercial hidden amoungst your collection would you? Or does anyone else know where this can be found, as its something i've been dying to see, but am having a tough time tracking it down.

Anyway, back to the thread...

Help: looking for... star wars ITV broadcast version
Time
s7en, if you'd posted just a little earlier you would have saved me ten minutes on google.

"Curse my metal body! I wasn't fast enough!"

By bizarre coincidence - well ok, google - I just stumbled across the same site you mentioned about ten minutes ago. Was hoping someone else had scans of the magazine in better condition than mine... Good to see someone has a copy for sale, I'm not sure I want to part with ten quid for the privilege though.

Help: looking for... star wars ITV broadcast version
Time
Moth3r,

If your recording is of the first ever ITV broadcast of Star Wars, then it'll be from 1982.

I've just dug out some clippings I saved from the TV Times way back then, and its dated for the week of 23-29th October 1982, with Star Wars being shown on the Sunday at 7.15.

Seeing these old, dog-eared pages makes me wish i had a scanner. I'll try grabbing some shots with my digital camera, cos these TV Times extracts make interesting/nostalgic reading.

STAR WARS: the alt.binaries.starwars thread
Time
Just finished downloading and watching "Return of the Ewok". I was stunned to see suddenly appear on the newsgroup as I never expected to see this outside of a convention. This download is great to see, and despite being a 320x240 quicktime movie the quality is a lot better than I was expecting. But, there's one slight let-down - it's not the full film. The quicktime is less than 4 minutes long, a far cry from the "24-minute film" quoted here: http://www.lepconnie.com/articles/swi46retewoktext.html

This extract from the .nfo is very telling: "For the first time, an edited version of Return of the Ewok is available online exclusively to Hyperspace members. Please note that the picture quality is inherent in the source material -- this is the cleanest version of this rare film known to exist." My emphasis on the 'edited'.

Didn't realise it was a Hyperspace exclusive, but I'd have hoped for the privilege of subscription, members might get more than edited highlights of rare content.

But enough hypocritical whinging, here's a recent article from a Celebration III showing of the film
Mystery Ewok Theater 2005: Return of the Ewok

Makes you pine for a dvd release, with full Warwick Davis commentary. It'd make a perfect extra for any future version of Jedi.

ROTS Review by Kevin Smith... EXTREME SPOILERS!
Time
As he says, he's predisposed to love star wars, he even wrote nice things about phantom menace. Worth a read for comparison:
Kevin's Phantom Menace Review

There's also an inspired article in the latest edition of Empire magazine, who had the sense to get uberfans Kevin Smith, Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright in a room together to mull over all things star wars.
Luckily you can also read the article online here:
Pegg, Smith & Wright! The definitive Star Wars fan conversation

I for one would love to hear Simon Peggs review of ROTS. Maybe it'd even inspire a third series of 'Spaced'. Or how about 'Shaun of the Sith'?

.: Moth3r's PAL DVD project :.
Time
Moth3r,

My setup is a 28inch widescreen Panasonic (TX-W28R4), its nothing fancy, it hasn't even got a 100htz display, but it gives a good picture for both PAL and NTSC. Audio is through Yamaha DSP-A5 5.1 amp and a nice set of Mission speakers.

The shot of Ben's hut appears on the LD as a field-bobbed freeze frame
That's exactly what I thought I was looking at.
I didn't even notice the two changes in colour saturation you mentioned till I went back looking for them. Maybe upping the colour on my tv made it less noticeable.

With further regard to the look of the DVD, I think the brightness and contrast are great, and I didn't notice any undue clipping with objects becoming overbright. With saturation, its a bit more subjective. For a long time I favoured the Dr Gonzo release, which is probably the most colourful version out there - outside of George Lucas' seemingly recolourised 2004 not-so-Special Edition DVD's - so by comparisons yours looks more muted. I usually have the colour setting of my tv set in the middle, but yours is one of those rare dvd's that made me want to turn it up.

As for the red-bias comment, I first noticed things looking redder than expected when testing the initial download on my PC. Watching it on my tv the redness iss less noticeable. However, I'm not convinced there's anything wrong with your transfer. I've made some screengrab comparisons, and while your version looks slighty redder, compared to the slightly cooler NTSC versions, I think the main difference may lie with the source material. Where I notice the biggest difference, that may have lulled me into thinking the whole transfer was red-biased, were the shots on Tatooine. NTSC versions depict Tatooine with blue skies and yellow sand, where as the Tatooine in your transfer looks more grey/overcast with more rust coloured sands. Tatooine shots aside, for the bulk of the movie, the differences in colour between versions are probably negligible.

Just to qualify what I'm saying, here's some screengrabs* comparing Moth3r, Dr Gonzo, and EditDroid versions.

.: Moth3r's PAL DVD project :.
Time
Hi,

I'm a long time lurker, first time poster, and all that...

Moth3r's PAL transfer of ANH has drawn me out of the shadows. It also made me sign up with a newsgroup provider, just so i could get hold of it - and thanks to russs15 for his newsgroup tips, Astraweb was just what I was looking for.

I have to say this DVD looks amazing. Detail-wise this is the best laserdisc transfer I've seen to date - that includes TR47, Editdroid, ISOMIX and DR Gonzo versions. It looks like the extra resolution of the PAL source discs helps a lot, as even rescaled to an anamorphic picture, it looks crisp, and the starfields are so much more visible than other versions. I don't know what you've used to resize the video, Moth3r, but it's done a superb job. Hats off to you.

As Moth3r pointed out its not perfect, i noticed dozens of line drops through out the movie, and compared with other version, the video looks a little undersaturated, with maybe a red-bias, but its nothing that can't be remedied by cranking up the colour on your tv. Another distracting thing is the disc change between side 1-2, which as moth3r says, is missing the screenwipe as ben and luke are lifting c3po. However, it wasn't this that was jarring as much as the shot of ben's hut which it cuts too, which appeared to be a lower resolution still of ben hut on freeze frame for a few seconds. The difference in quality, and the fact it looked like the video had been paused was enough to jolt me out of the movie for a few seconds.

The other slight distraction is as this is the first transfer of star wars I've seen in PAL for quite some - despite living in the UK - everything just seems to move slightly too quickly compared to the NTSC versions i'm used to, so it'd be interesting to see how an NTSC version of this transfer compares.

Just wanted to say, Moth3r, you've done a great job with this transfer, thanks for releasing it to the masses, and I can't wait to see what you come up with next.

Impressive. Most impressive, some might say...
