Info: The "OFFICIAL" audio mixes of the Original Trilogy - Help needed.
Time

I have been collecting information on all the DVD transfers and projects currently available and at the same time trying to make sense of all the LaserDiscs/VHS tapes used to make those transfers. In doing this, I have also become very aware of and interested in the various Official audio mixes used over the years for the Original Trilogy.

Can anyone point me towards any information about these different mixes, particularly for Empire and Jedi (where I can find little information)

Meanwhile, I have done my own list based on the information I currently have along with current known sources and captures of the mixes.

I am looking to have this list as correct as possible and will take any ideas or critisism on board.

Star Wars

(1) 1977 35mm two-track Dolby Stereo (as available up to 1985 CAV LaserDisc - captured)
(2) 1977 70mm Six-Track Dolby Stereo (never available but re-created by the EditDroid team)
(3) 1977 35mm mono. (available from UK ITV VHS tape or 1977 bootleg tape)
(4) 1985 two-track Dolby Stereo (as available on 1992 Pan/Scan LaserDisc)
(5) 1993 two-track Dolby Stereo (as available on Definitive Collection onwards)
(6) 1997 Special Edition (as available on SE LaserDisc)
(7) 2004 Special Special Edition (as available on 2004 DVD)

The Empire Strikes Back

(1) 1980 35mm two-track Dolby Stereo (as available up to 1985 CAV LaserDisc but no capture known - yet)
(2) 1980 70mm Six-Track Dolby Stereo (Never available on LaserDisc or tape)
(3) 1985 two-track Dolby Stereo (as available on 1992 Pan/Scan LaserDisc)
(4) 1993 two-track Dolby Stereo (as available on Definitive Collection onwards)
(5) 1997 Special Edition (as available on SE LaserDisc)
(6) 2004 Special Special Edition (as available on 2004 DVD)

Return of the Jedi (with many assumptions)

(1) 1983 35mm two-track Dolby Stereo (never available on LaserDisc or tape)*
(2) 1983 70mm Six-Track Dolby Stereo (Never available on LaserDisc or tape)*
(3) 1986 two-track Dolby Stereo (as available on 1992 Pan/Scan LaserDisc)**
(4) 1993 two-track Dolby Stereo (as available on Definitive Collection onwards)
(5) 1997 Special Edition (as available on SE LaserDisc)
(6) 2004 Special Special Edition (as available on 2004 DVD)

*assuming that Jedi had the same theatrical release versions as Star Wars and Empire.

**assuming that Jedi also had the new 1985 mix as per Star Wars and Empire prior to the first release on LaserDisc and tape in 1986.

All help is appreciated.

I would really like to get a hold of the .ts files for the High Def. Science of Episodes.

I had them but the drive failed before I got them backed up!!!!!

I did not get them on my DVD recorder either as it was not working properly at the time (or so I thought but it was Macrovision stopping recordings!!)

Babyhum had these back in May as he was looking at a release but do not know anyone else who got them.

OH and 1 more thing,THANK YOU VERY MUCH RUSS FOR UPDATING MY SIG,with this new set release.

No problems, tis the least I can do.............

One quick question, on the Faces Jedi VHS tape, is the Fox Fanfare still there as it is in every other Star Wars release??

The reason I ask is that in the UK, our "......ONE LAST TIME" Jedi (WS and FS) there is no Fox Fanfare but a crappy CBS/FOX animated thing followed by the "A LUCASFILM LIMITED Production" screen in silence. Weird!!!!!

Once I get a new VHS I will upload a file so you can all see what I mean.

Feedback time and it is not good news.............

I get the Kevin Smith group through my ISP and nothing arrived there. I have had that problem before with multi-group posts. (is this an ISP or Agent problem??)

Through Astraweb I only got a couple of parts of the par2 files - all incomplete - on the Kevin Smith and dvd5 groups. I am getting headers for the superman group now but that will take an hour or two. (UPDATE - all present on a.b.superman)

Also through Astraweb a.b.dvd takes about 8 hours to get headers from nothing and is a almost unusable!! I have a 2Mb connection too!!!!

A newsgroup is a discussion group on Usenet that is for talking about a specific topic e.g. alt.binaries.starwars would likely have discussions and files to do with star wars - alt.binaries.ilovemonkeys would have discussions and files for people who have a penchant for monkeys etc.

Newgroups can store files, messages, pictures etc. but you need a newsreader program to be able to connect to the newsgroup, browse/read what is there and download or post files or messages.

The big deal about newsgroups is that unlike a torrent or "Direct Connect" hub etc. you are not dependant on the speed of the 'uploader'. Once a file is on the newsgroup, you can typically download it at the full speed of your particular internet connection.

So if you are on a 1.5mb/512k ADSL connection for instance, you would get around 150KB per second when downloading from newsgroups. (Whereas you might only get 2K per second from a torrent if the uploader has a slow or busy connection.)

Some ISPs support newsgroups, so if you have a good ISP, you can just download a simple download oriented newsreader (like Grabit for the PC or Unison for the Mac), subscribe to alt.binaries.starwars, tell it to grab all the headers (This can take a while the first time - some newsgroups have over 4 million headers/files) and then choose the files to download.

If your ISP is not so good, then a lot of the files may display as incomplete, or not show up at all - in that case you need a 'newsgroup provider' and pay a monthly fee to get access to newsgroups. Companies like giganews provide this type of service, have extremely fast servers, and keep the files for over a month and the files are nearly always 100% complete, so they are well worth it unless your ISP is spectacular.
The provider will give you an account with a username and password, and you put that into your newsreader software and off you go.

Almost anything imaginable is out there on Newsgroups, from music, old TV shows, esoteric films, abandonware, special interest stuff - it is like a whole other internet of treasures waiting to be accessed at full speed.

Once you newsgroup, you can never go back....

Who is your internet provider?? In the UK, ntl and Virgin have free access but I am unsure of other providers.

All the information you need is linked to here.

To get started, I suggest using Forte Agent 2 and either your ISP or a premium service. (I use Astraweb's 65Gb for $25 as a premium backup to my ntl service)

I hope this helps.......

Ever so slightly off topic but along the lines of DJ's Faces VHS project, here is a sample of my 1994 ANH Digitally Remastered Fullscreen PAL VHS tape recorded to DVD from a crappy mono VHS player to my Liteon DVD recorder.

The recorder is a good one (check out Segaflips PAL releases) but I need to get a decent stereo player if I am to properly transfer all 34 of my VHS tapes.

Basically, from the sample, is it worth doing that or not bothering??
