Fine work there, E. I admire that kind of attention to detail. I don't suppose you have a sample of Aurebesh handy so we laymen can compare?

I symphathize with you, Ady. I'm starting a weight loss regimen... well, about five minutes ago actually. I've got my bowl of oatmeal and my coffee with Splenda, and my lunch salad is sitting in the fridge. Should be fun. Of course I've got a few on you -- Google says my weight translates to 19 stone. I'm also 6'4" but still that's way too heavy. Anyway, here's to both of us shedding those pounds, eh?

Um, because we were, like, going for a record??? Longest fan edit thread without a mention of artwork? Hello??? Thanks for blowing it, duh!

I'm just kiddin'. I'd love to see some prospective artwork, but I don't know if Adywan's got anything in the works.

I had the same feeling. Maybe the ships look a little too flat, like cutouts sliding across a background... but I'm not sure what you could do about it short of modeling the ships in CG, which I don't think would be worth the effort for such a brief shot.

There's little question he was trashed during filming (he and Ace were both pretty far gone during this period), but the true story behind his lines being dubbed by another actor is a matter of some debate. Most dialog in a production like this is looped -- re-recorded in post-production. The official story is that Peter refused to show up to the looping sessions, so it was necessary to have another actor record his lines. Peter has denied this, claiming to have shown up for all the looping sessions. I'm not aware of any authoritative proof either way, but I'm more likely to believe the former than the latter.

A. Frehley substituted his lines for bird sounds (really)...
I don't believe that's correct. Those "bird sounds" are scripted. When Ace was interviewed by the screenwriters, the only word he would say to them is "Ack!" (Because he's a weird dude.) So they wrote his part that way. Ace nearly quit the film when he realized they hadn't given him any real lines, so they wrote him some.
eventually he got pissed and quit before all his scenes were filmed, so at least one scene has a black guy in makeup filling in.

That's his stunt man. But you're right, he was required to fill in for one scene after Ace stormed off the set.

Concert footage has to be less than 5 minutes total (presumably a last-ditch effort to prevent the film from appealing to fans)

That's an odd conclusion to draw, but yes there is not as much concert footage in the film as one would like. It's my understanding the international version ("Attack of the Phantoms," as released on Kissology II) contains more concert footage than the US release. It's supposed to be a vastly different edit (and markedly more watchable, for whatever that's worth).

But yes, it's a bad movie.

Yes your right indeed, DTS would be a nice gadget but it would not make Ady's release any 'better'....

If there were a DTS track, I hope it wouldn't be at the expense of video bitrate or other aspects of the presentation. I only know one person who even has a DTS-capable system -- it doesn't seem so widespread that it would be worth making sacrifices elsewhere.

Hardly sounds like it would be the most difficult thing he's pulled off in this edit.

This was attempted but it is way to hard to track it precisely enough to be an acceptable fix. it may look like a simple fix compared to what i have achieved so far but believe me this is hell of a lot harder.

I stand corrected!

On one hand, I think it's a noble effort. On the other, I don't think there's any way it could have been successful. On the other other hand, I think it could have been more successful than it is.

A few things are handled quite well. I like the way Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's arrival on the Trade Federation ship at the beginning of Ep1 goes right into the Darth Maul fight. There are a few nice touches like that. But on the whole, as much as I admire the effort that went into it, it just doesn't work as a film, and I found it difficult to complete.

The bigger problem I see is that I don't think it's possible that anyone who hasn't seen the original films could possibly follow it. No time is given to introducing the characters at all. Padme is just sort of there, and is apparently somewhat fond of Ani. The two Jedis are there, and are apparently Jedis. Jar Jar is there, but he doesn't say anything, which is welcome for the initiated but weird otherwise to just have this mute CG guy flopping around for no reason. Many scenes just don't make any sense, not that they necessarily did to begin with, but they're even more non-sensical here.

One major head-thumper: the "I don't like sand" scene is here. What?!? How do you chop a few hours out of the prequel trilogy and leave the single worst moment intact? Definitely led me to question the editor's priorities, that's for sure.

Another note I might give is to slow down the opening crawl. The crawl text itself is not too bad, and gives a reasonable explanation of where we are at the beginning of the story, but the text has already receded to the point of illegibility long before the opening theme music is finished. So we sit there for what seems like a very long time, just watching these tiny yellow lines march off into the distance. There's a lot of information there, it would have helped to have the extra time to read it. (I actually had to pause the DVD to take it all in.)

If the editor reads this, I hope he doesn't take it as too much of a slam. For what was probably an impossible task to begin with, I'd give it a solid B-. It's certainly better than watching the actual films, but only by virtue of being shorter, not better. It's an intriguing enough concept that I would take the time to watch v2.0, but I think it will take a lot of reworking to make it an enjoyable viewing experience.

Adywan, I just PMed you a link to a page that has Rapidshare links for the KCCI holiday special. (I assumed the link would not be permitted here.) Hope this helps.

I would love nothing more than to scan through all 74 pages of this thread, but could maybe someone save me a little time and repost the links to the available clips? Please? I love the stills I've seen but haven't seen any of the amazing clips you guys are talking about. If there's a link to donate, I'll take that too!
