Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * <strong><em>SPOILER THREAD</em></strong> *

The difference is the future movies need to stand by the change. Vader as Luke’s father isn’t contradicted by ROTJ. Luke and Leia as sisters was pulled in last minute but if you go back it isn’t that bad, as Luke and Leia never show romantic feelings or something. If it were so obviously a later change it would have been a bad twist. Same for Anakin, his motivation actually algins better imo with the love established in AOTC.

The ST though honestly feels like Abrams and Johnson wrestling for control over the story. TLJ at least tries to build on TFA even if many of the twists toe the line, I’d say they work. TROS abandons any regard of plausibility.

Imagine if ROTJ revealed the following. Vader lied to Luke and the twist was just for shock value, REALLY Luke’s father was a heroic Jedi Knight. All the emotional opportunities and arcs setup by ESB? Nevermind.

The Empire that has been steadily built up as the big bad is nothing more than a shill for the Yuuzhan Vong, who arrive with no explanation and midway through kill the Emperor. The threat level of the Empire last movie was literally based around? Nevermind.

Han suddenly has no agency… wait nvm ROTJ already had that. All his arc as a smuggler slowing turning good skipped over to the end, where he can be a flat character meant to drive plot.

The Vong seem to contradict everything Yoda told us about the force but no one addresses it. So all of Yoda teachings? Nevermind.

In the end, Luke wins and goes back to Tatooine where he takes up the name “Lars” in honor of his aunt and uncle for whatever reason. The entire point of Luke trying to move away from Tatooine and see the galaxy? Nevermind.

This contradicts everything ANH and ESB were setting up. Maybe a few of these could have worked, had it been properly developed, but using TROS as a model none of them would be and it’d all make no sense.

Luke VERY CLEARLY had romantic feelings for Leia in SW77 and TESB.

George Lucas: Star Wars Creator, Unreliable Narrator &amp; Time Travelling Revisionist...

All of this clear evidence that Lucas has been retconning things since ESB has turned me into even more of an SW77 purist than I already was!

My new headcanon is:
-Star Wars 1977
-The original marvel comics (up until they adapted ESB in 1980)
-Splinter of the Mind’s Eye
-The animated segment of the holiday special
-Droids (why not?)
-The Han books (again, why not?)
…And I guess that’s it!

The Empire Strikes Back - at 40
Time

The 40th anniversary of ESB has made me start to wonder what the world would be like right now had we gotten Splinter of the Mind’s Eye as the film sequel to SW77 instead.

I like ESB in a vacuum (both as it’s own film as well as the middle chapter of the OT), but I feel that some of the rather dark story choices it made (mainly Vader being Luke’s father) is what set the franchise on a bad path in the long run. ESB turned SW from a space opera into a soap opera (or a “family saga,” as Lord Lucas likes to say it). And ever since then, people have been arguing about what SW should and shouldn’t be.

Splinter and anything afterwards would’ve been boring, sure, but at least we wouldn’t have cared so much, and the fandom at large wouldn’t have become so toxic.

ESB, despite being an absolutely GREAT movie on its own, put SW on an unreachable pedestal from that point onward. Ever since then, nobody can decide whether SW should keep “growing with its audience” or stay as a “kids thing.”

Sorry for ranting. Just wanted to get that out of my system!

55 Responses already! Thank you all so much! I was thinking about posting this elsewhere to be sure to get good coverage but I think I’d much rather have input exclusively from existing members of this community, so such a high number is amazing. There are some REALLY interesting answers here, including a couple of places where I reckon there’s a good steer towards brand new ideas which are probably feasible - I’ll post up analysis sometime this weekend.

Nice! Looking forward to seeing the analysis. That was a lot of fun for me to fill out! I hope the gold and purple sabers get a lot of votes!!

Awesome story about your experience in Jordan, by the way! I agree with the poster above. You’re a great storyteller!

Nice work! I think you did a really good job accomplishing your goal of making TLJ feel like the conclusion of the saga. I really like the moment where you added the TRoS flashback of Luke and Leia training, and seeing Leia with a purple saber felt really “refreshing.” Thanks again for taking my idea into consideration! 😃

UPDATE: I’m encoding V1 of the film as we speak. I’ll upload it shortly thereafter. Expect it to be up in the next 24 hours. Just a reminder that this edit currently using HAL9000’s Legendary edition as a base any credit for the overall improvement of the film goes to him.

Nice! Just out of curiosity, did you add the Luke and Leia training scene from TRoS to explain Leia’s Saber? Or are you just going to leave that as a loose end, for now?

I did and I think it works really well! I ended up borrowing skenera’s purple lightsaber for it and I credited both of you in the changes list.

Nice! And thanks, glad I could help!

Final rendering has started.
I’ll release this the way it is now. I see there are more and more cool ideas about TROS around here. I love what snooker made for the ending with the Falcon, and I worship jonh for his Force ghosts.
I’ll eventually make a V2 with all those additions.
But now I just want this to be finished. In a couple of days, maybe tomorrow, it will be out. There are some video and audio issues, but I suggest you consider this edit as “some ideas” put here and there.

Nice! This edit sounds very interesting, based on everything you listed in the front page.

Hey I have an idea @adobewan !

Instead of going through the trouble of trying to edit Leia’s Saber out the epilogue, just add the flashback of her and Luke training together during the bit when Luke is opening himself back up to the force (on the cliff at night)… Or maybe just after he sees the hologram of her that R2 plays. Make it look as if it’s Luke himself experiencing that flashback.

EDIT: forgot to mention earlier that, in order for this to work, the narration Luke does during that training sequence would obviously have to be removed. It would have to be just a silent sequence, with music.

I suppose it could be left to the audience to conclude in their heads that Leia did some training, and then left to focus on rebuilding the Republic.

I really appreciate the suggestion. That’s the best idea I’ve heard for this aspect of the film so far. I’ll give it a shot and see how it comes out!

Glad I could help! Hope it goes well!

I also have an idea for what you could do with broom kid:

During the sequence when all the star destroyers are falling, keep all the music the same, but get rid of cloud city, so that the only planets from that sequence we see are Endor and Jakku, and then in the space where Jakku used to be, add the close-up shot of broom kid’s hand with the rebel ring on it, followed by the close-up of his face smiling, and then followed by the final wide shot of him looking at the stars (and fade to black there, just as the music ends). The Tattooine epilogue can then immediately follow that!

Broom Boy likely won’t be in V1 but I’ll give this a shot when I’m working on V2 and see how well I can get it to work

Sounds good. Best of luck with both v1 and v2!

Dom's (Possibly) Useful TROS Edit (WIP)
Time

Yeah, I think things generally make more sense in a Rey Nobody edit if Palpatine tells Kylo about the dyad, and his plan the whole time is to use the two of them to rejuvenate himself. It builds on the whole ‘darkness rises and the light to meet it’ idea from TLJ rather than retconning it entirely. It’s not like the theatrical cut makes any attempt to explain why or how Kylo knows they’re a dyad, iirc.
Unfortunately I think it’s difficult to cut around the whole ‘kill me and let me steal your body!’ bit of the movie. I’m interested to see how Dom handles that. Also, if Palpatine doesn’t explicitly want Rey dead, then the difference between Kylo’s plan (“Let’s go kill him and take the throne!”) and Sheev’s plan (in this idea: “I’m going to trick him into bringing Rey to me so I can suck the life out of them!”) is less clear cut.

Yeah the scene where Kylo learns about the dyad was the oracle scene, which was cut from the final film, so the theatrical cut gives no explanation as to why or how he knows about that.

Building off my idea above; if you’re one of those people that doesn’t like the way Luke was portrayed in TLJ, maybe you can cut out everything with him and Rey on the island after we see her holding the saber out to him on the cliff. Then, the next time we see him is when he shows up to join the other rebels on Crait. That way, you can imply that him seeing his old saber again was enough to convince him to come back. This would probably involve having to cut out all Snoke scenes, though, as well as any mention of him, thus making it so that Kylo went to the dark side by his own choice, and he’s been running The First Order/ Imperial Remains since the beginning… Perhaps this is too radical of an idea…

EDIT: Yeah, you know what? Nevermind. Forget what I just said in this post. Given the material we have to work with here, Grumpy Luke needs to stay, whether people like it or not.

The General '3 in 1' Redux <strong>Ideas</strong> thread.
Time

Gave this more thought last night. I think I know how I would do this now:

So I’m aware of at least one TFA edit and at least one TLJ edit that narrows both movies down to 1 hour and 30 minutes each, just about.

I’m also aware of a TLJ edit in the making that makes it feel like the ending of the saga by adding just some bits and pieces of TRoS at the very end (there’s a thread on here for that one).

So my proposition is to simply just combine all of those together, and what you’d get from that is a movie that’s just a little over 3 hours long that’s about one half TFA and one half TLJ, with just some light sprinkles of TRoS at the end.

I think that’d be really cool!

EDIT: One thing I forgot to mention earlier is that doing it this way would lose the explanation as to where Snoke came from. Before TRoS, my “fix” for that was to have Rey faintly hear his voice in TLJ when she walks into the ancient Jedi temple by the cliff and sees that little pool with the mural thing (I always thought that the figure in the mural kinda looked like Snoke). This would imply that Snoke is an ancient being of some kind, maybe even one of the first Jedi ever, who became corrupted long ago.

It’s a shame that even after Carrie’s death, Iger refused to give them an extra year.

He did give them an extra six months though, to be fair, since it was originally supposed to come out in May 2019.

At the same time as Avengers Endgame…

Imagine how hard that would have bombed.

Yeah idk what they were thinking initially. Disney really overestimated the power of starwars, I guess lol.

I always thought the movie was going to end with Rey and Kylo both alive but running their own schools separately, giving Disney the “reboot” template they wanted. As in the series could pick up in 100 years or so with the simple good vs bad dynamic already set up for the next generation of viewers to start over with.

Yeah I think a good thematic “beat” for the ST to end on would’ve been to have the Jedi evolving into multiple factions that all interpret the idea of “embracing the light” in their own unique way. You could’ve had Finn, Rey, and maybe even Kylo each starting their own independent Jedi orders, and then make a new series set thousands of years later with a bunch of different Jedi factions thriving, but not getting along with one another, until a new “team” forms that consists of one person from each faction, to symbolize things “coming back together.” That would’ve been cool, in my opinion.

The main Star Wars theme has been a general theme for the franchise post OT. Williams’s decision, and it just makes sense.

Exactly. The same way the Force theme was originally conceived as Obi-Wan Kenobi’s theme.

Was it really supposed to be Obi-Wan’s theme at first? Damn! You learn something new everyday!

A Palpatine-less Edit of The Rise of Skywalker (Released)

A couple of things if anyone out there is willing to help with.

First off, any suggestions for a title change? I’ve been trying to think of something that encapsulates what makes this edit unique, but haven’t come up with anything as its uniqueness comes from a lack of something.

A couple of alterations I would like to make but are beyond my ability:

A line from Poe along the lines of “We have to go back. It’s Leia.” This is to indicate why they had back to Ajon Kloss before Rey finds the Wayfinder. My though is that as Leia is going off to lie down, she calls Poe back to be put in charge.
Add a Force glow around Leia during the shot where she says “Ben.”
An audio effect to add during the transitions to and from the Luke vision.
Remove Leia’s lightsaber from the Tatooine sequence as I haven’t found a way to introduce it in the movie itself.

Any help with these things would be appreciated.

Something like “Rise of the Galaxy” or maybe “Fate of the Galaxy” would probably be a good title for your case, since you seem to be focusing in on the idea of everyone in the galaxy rising up for one last stand.
