Video Games - a general discussion thread

I've based my information about the Gamecube version on insights of a friend who is very close to the news related to Nintendo. So I guess he was wrong, and thus, so was I. I apologise

Today I was at a local store where the official national XBOX 360 release was being made. It'll be the most simple version of the XBOX 360, costing a little bit more than the Wii (thus almost half the price a PS3), with one controller, a special celebrative front-skin for the console and 3 games. The box, manual and console internal menu are in portuguese. While the initial game line up is neing released in english, every major release from now on will be fully translated into portuguese, which is a very cool thing - only SEGA used to do that, and only with a few games. There's also the network service and full national warranty and technical assistance. Based on pricing and features I expect the XBOX 360 to outsell the PS3 over here by far!

By the way my Wii arrived Pre-orders are getting the consoles before the official december 12th release here.

It does, but it merely emits two pulses of infrared lights at each end of the bar. The wiimote reads those infrared pulses and thus calculate it's position on the X-Y-Z axis. It then sends that information back to the console. So the candles, that emit an invisible infrared light pretty much like remote controllers, can be used if placed on a correct distance from one another. You could also use two remote controllers, but you gotta make sure some button from both controllers is being kept pressed, so infrared light is emitted from it.

Today at work I've listened to the Pink Floyd - Wish you Were Here album around 4 or 5 times... Since my ear phone broke and the only one I currently own is the one that only works with my pocket pc, I had to get the CD, rip it off as mp3, and copy it through the USB into the ppc, and listen to it there. Since it took too long, I decided to just listen to that the whole day. Tomorrow's probably The Wall - CD 1.

The Persecution Season is Heating Up
Time
Yes, there are. While at the United States I'd be considered a extremist liberal, over here I'm a mid-conservative.

But regarding this specific subject, not really. Even though the massive majority is catholic (I would say something like 95% of the population, with something like 3% jewish and 2% from other religions), something like that over here would be absolutely unthinkable. People from other religions even reference the holidays as christmas, and integrated their own religious beliefs on this particular celebration, such as having a party or something. If you take a look at Japan, you'll see that something similar takes place: while december 25th is not even a holiday, people exchange gifts and give out christmas parties.

Kinda like Bart Simpson once said "Christmas is that time of the year in which all other religions gather up to praise Jesus Christ." (don't remember the exact quote).

First of all, this thing about Christmas being politically incorrect, that's something that came up recently. I don't remember anyone complaining about this some decades ago. And how can be doing something-xmas related offensive in ANY way? One thing is promoting a movie that talks about xmas or doing some xmas based decoration, but we are not forcing jews and musslins to praise Jesus Christ!

I live in a country in which just the mere concept of forbidding something xmas related just due to the fact it's a christian celebration is a concept absolutely foreign and insane, so I can only laugh at this.

Has technology accelerated that much?

VHS was the video format, but 10 years later, VHS is completely dead. DVD is at its peak and hi-def is coming onto the field. It's amazing the video quality we see nowadays. If I went back 10 years ago and showed someone a DVD, they'd probably think they were high or something. But the most shocking thing would be that we would be acheiving it in 10 years.

The rise of the DVD format was quite a fenomenon, if you think about it. Now, VHS took a little bit longer to pick up, and there was no other format to replace - there was beta, but that was running along with VHS on the videotape market. Now, I remember back in the late 90s how the DVD section of video stores were kinda like the "porn section", it was a little stand on the corner of the store, hidden, and I remember STARES from customers when I picked up a copy of "Enter the Dragon" on DVD. I mean, VHS was THE format back then, and it didn't seem it was going to fade so quickly, there were so many movies on VHS... And now, 2006, movies are not released on VHS anymore, the format is absolutely dead (except for taping TV shows, so I still have a VCR) - but when TIVO gets a little bit more popular around here, it will be formally deceased... Although I still can find vinyl long play records today...
