Wow, not the scene I was expecting :)
Wow, not the scene I was expecting :)
Was that changed much for the SE?

GBU 35mm IB tech print update:
Unfortunately, the seller is unable to fulfil my request so I'm going to have to let this opportunity pass. I'm unwilling to send USD $1600 based on pics of 5 frames.
That is a shame, it looked like a good print.
I can get a 16mm reduction print from Western Australia for around $500 if there is any interest in that.

I have a fondness for those releases. More or less, they are "My Star Wars"...
I've searched the boards, but I'd really like to get up to date information regarding the possibility of finding them in decent, possibly anamorphic quality. The topics don't have much activity past 2005-06.
Any info would be awesome!
There are 35mm SE prints available, there is one up for sale right now in fact.
If anyone wants to purchase them, I am happy to make an archival scan of them.
In other news RMWUSA are doing a '4K restoration' of the Star Wars trilogy according to their website. I have no doubt it will be the latest in a long line of Special Editions, but a 4K release would make restoration work easier.
If they do a good job this time, and don't scrub as much grain and with 4K resolution and a deeper colourspace, then it would be easier to just restore the changed scenes from the 35mm prints and insert them into the official restoration.

BTW, Poita, great find! I'll definitely chip in - just let me know what to do.
Thanks Mav, send me a PM :)
I am about to enter the cleanup phase for Star Wars, does anyone have a scene they would like to see done, I have to start somewhere, so I thought I may as well throw it out to you all to get a favourite scene done first.
Any help to obtain equipment or help with shipping is always appreciated, feel free to PM me if you can help out, I would like to be able to get this print scanned, and graded to the print as a colour reference for anyone out there doing restorations, whether it be from laserdisc or 35mm film...
I imagine someone here could GOUT-Sync it if you wanted audio to go with it.
All I will say is it is from Europe, the lab understandably does not want to be identified.
It was.
Oh wow, I must track that down then, I would love to have the mono to go with my 16mm print.

I wasn't talking about Harmy. I was talking about -1You're referring to a previous member of the team. I am nowhere near there.
So you keep saying. If other team members didn't want to be called -1 for short they should have called the team something else.
Or have their own accounts?
No soundtrack, it is a mute print.
I couldn't afford this as it is :), it would have set me back another $500 to get the film striped and soundtrack transferred.

Thanks for referencing this. We weren't sure if you wanted to make this public here are not. It will be a very good resource.
Also, there is another LPP of Empire besides that one that we know of, so it's not the only one.

I know the one you mean, but it hasn't been verified yet. I am very much hoping that it does indeed turn out to be a true LPP.
Dufus, drop me a PM and what country you are in, I can organise the scan and answer any of your questions.
Right-click on the image above and select 'View Image' to see it in full.
BTW. The Red box is just the sampling area for the real-time histogram view, it isn't a cropping selection.
I was given the opportunity to purchase a brand new Super8 transfer of Empire Strikes Back from a foreign negative, so how could I say no?
It is on brand new poly stock, I have one reel of it (I only had enough money for a downpayment and they were kind enough to let go one reel at a time as I pay).
I sat down with this projected side by side with the only known 35mm LPP of ESB in existence (before you ask, the owner of the 35mm will absolutely *not* let me scan it), and I am pleased to say, the colour is nearly a perfect match.
This Super8 will be a great resource as a reliable colour reference for ESB.
I am busily digitising this reel, you can see a movie of the grab in action here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/msl15wiwg0pfdxy/Empire8.mov
Download it rather than watch it in dropbox, as the preview in dropbox is all crappy.
I do of course then have to grade the scan to match the print, and these images are from my phone, so don't worry, the final version will look much better.
Now I just need to find $400 to pay for the rest of it!
Any other news?

Are you planning to release this raw preview to us at OT? I'm sure there are plenty of people here who would be interested in seeing the movie without any work done on it.
How extensive is this damage?
Looking at the horrendous weave backed into this particular print, you might want it to at least be stabilised, or you could get seasick.
Thanks for the covers link.
BTW, was the Audio on the 16mm the mono mix?
My 16mm print is mono, but it is just the stereo mixed down to mono, not the theatrical mono mix.
My files are currently around 16TB per film, so a 50GB file sounds like the smallest thing imaginable at the moment :)
I get a similar effect when the light source in the scanner is off axis, causing one side of the film to get dirty looking grain. Might be something different here though.
Need to get yourself some dark walls :)
I'd secure the print, the HDDs can come later, I will cover the cost of those if no-one else ponies up.
Although, the price on these 3TB drives is good!
Lil Brutto, maybe you could start a new thread titled '35mm transfer The Good the Bad and The Ugly' or something similar, and use the new thread for the 35mm project.
BTW, has the transaction for the print occurred yet?
Oddly 4TB external drives on sale tend to be cheaper than internal drives and work out the best bang for buck.
