The PMs are slowly trickling in. The estimated shipping cost is $300. We also need to cover the cost of HDD storage. How much storage required depends on the format we use for the digital scan. poita, what do you suggest?

The best way to store the scan is uncompressed .DPX

It is by far the fastest to work with in any software, and can be read by all pro apps.

The downside is the filesize is huge, around 120MB per frame, which means a data rate of around 3 GigaBytes per second, or around 175GB per minute.

This equates to around 11TB per hour of footage, and this is *without* sound.

The next best option is losslesly compressed .EXR, this comes in at about 60% of that size, but is a little slower to work with as the frames have to decompress on the fly when working in your software of choice.

For a proxy to work with, you can convert down to a UHD ProRes 4:2:2 lossy compressed file, which comes out at around 1TB per hour.

IMHO opening two crowdfunding campaigns for "Fistful of dollars" and "Duck, you sucker!" will successfully raise money in a week or two... if there is some interest in preserving those prints, of course...

About GBU: if needed, I could try to restore the scanned print to a good shape; don't know if I will be able to reach Mondo or MGM 4K quality, but hey, we are all fan restoration hobbysts here, aren't we?

If anyone knows how to do that via crowdfunding and obtain the prints, I am happy to scan them for preservation.

I'm sure people would be interested in restoring the scans of the prints, just want everyone to understand that a Bluray taken from a negative will always have a lot more detail and dynamic range, less grain and more sharpness than a scan at any resolution taken from even the best print in the world.

Scans from prints look very good, but very different to a scan taken from a neg.

Anyone who wants to chip in for shipping, contact Lil Brutto, he has put up the total cost of the print itself, we will need a few hundred extra for shipping and once it arrives for scanning, for HDDs to store the scan on.

He will retain ownership of the print itself in this case, so PM him if you are interested in helping with shipping and to sort out the details so we don't clog up the thread with that stuff.

Thanks again to Andrea for negotiating on the ground in Italy.

Yes, fistfull is also an IB TECH, but I don't have any other details on it at the moment.

Fistful of dollars is also available, I wish we had a better way to crowdfund for prints!

It looks like The Good The Bad and The Ugly print will be going ahead, anyone that can help cover the shipping fees, please feel free to do so :)

I just want to make sure before we pull the trigger so to speak that everyone is aware that even with the print scanned at 4K, the BD will probably have more true detail, and probably a wider dynamic range than the print, and that the print has the Italian mono soundtrack as far as I know. And even a great print of this age will have scratches and some emulsion lines and some splices.

What the print will bring us is as close to the true colour timing and framing of the film as we are ever likely to get.

To me though, it's greatest benefit will be to be able to regrade the BD to match the theatrical release.

Team Negative1 - Return of the Jedi 1983 - 35mm Theatrical Version (unfinished project)
Time

It might be sacrilegious but I love jedi, except for the muppets.

Max Rebo really shit me even in 1983... really a foam-rubber blue elephant that is obvioulsy randomly hitting keys, Droopy McCool also clearly not playing the instrument and Sy Snootles so obviously not able to to stand on her own. It felt lazy when the rest of the SW trilogy was relatively realistic with its character and prop designs. They looked terrible and the music was rooted in the early 80s.

Most of the rest of the film I loved, the adrenaline rush of the speeder bikes, the insanely busy space battle scenes, the Falcon barely outrunning the DeathStar flameout, yoda looked great, the emporer looked nice and ancient and evil, I can even cope with the ewoks, but that musical number and the associated characters really seemed below par.

The Matrix [spoRv] *BD-25 RELEASED*
Time

The print is pretty scratched up, mostly useful as a colour reference to correct the BD to the theatrical release, but still fun to watch.

I think many people will be surprised that their memory of the film doesn't match what is actually was in the cinema, it had a very blown-out, almost bleach bypass look in many scenes, with white burned out skies and a high contrast look.

Looking at the scenes, correcting the BD wouldn't be too hard to match it to the print.

To be honest it doesn't look like we are going to get close on this, it is a shame as there would be very few original IB TECH prints out there of this movie.

I'm going to let it go, maybe there are some 'Western' forums etc. somewhere that could get some funding up. If so, I am still glad to scan it. Perhaps some fans here could spread the word in other places.

I am talking to someone who has a 16mm print tonight, I'll see how that pans out.
