Fortunately, the Lowry process seems to have had a harder time scrubbing away grain than it did scrubbing away starfields. Or maybe that’s unfortunately.

Actually, there’s tons of fake grain added on top of the 2004 master.
Check out this screenshot from the BD’s uncompressed ProRes source file:

The same excessive noise that is all over the image actually overlaps into the black bars.

Great picture. Can I ask what’s the source?

Did Wesley really save the ship too many times?
In one of the very first episodes (the 1., 2., 3. or 4. depending on where you live and the broadcast order) he had the idea of throwing the other ship at the asteroid to slow it down so that Data has time to start the engines and save the Enterprise - Data actually saved the ship, Wesley just gave him time.
Then there were 2 Traveller episodes, in one of them he helped the Traveller to bring the ship back to the known universe and in the second one he helped him to save his mother from the bubble - in both cases he had no idea what he’s doing and couldn’t do bantha poodoo without the Traveller’s guidance.
And then in a later episode when he was just a guest he actually saved the ship from the influences of the mind controlling game.

I don’t really remember any other episodes where he would save the day, from what I remember he was always just being on the bridge or in the engine room just doing his job, or he was being an awkward teenager, or in the early episodes just causing trouble.

But Troi on the other hand was really useless. The writers obviously had no idea what to do with her character, so she was always just stating the obvious, or had a romantic involvement with the guest of the week, or she was arguing with her mother.

Was TFA called Episode VII?
Time

Sorry for the question, but I can’t find the answer anywhere. I know that the “Episode VII” part of the title was supposed to be dropped, and it’s not mentioned on Wikipedia, where the movie is called simply “Star Wars : The Force Awakens”.
I live in Slovakia, where the movie has been marketed as Star Wars Episode 7, and the opening crawl (a translated version, not the English version) has also included the episode number.

Can anybody of you guys who has seen the English version confirm if the crawl had the “Episode VII” part in it? And I apologize if it was discussed already - I couldn’t find it. Thanks a lot.

Did you watch the sample they posted? I think that should answer your question. As long as they manage to make it at least as clean as the v1.0 version that is, because even after the initial cleanup, it’s still pretty rough.

Actually I did and it doesn’t really answer any of my questions 😦

You guys mention cropping but it should be noted that the blu-rays actually expand the image not cut any of it out. The show was shot on film and cropped to fit the standard 4:3 aspect ratio of the time. The Blu-rays went back to the negatives and reveal more of the image than we’ve ever seen before.

Though I do understand the general wish that the show had maintained its original aspect ratio. That was one of the great things about the Twin Peaks HD transfers.

Oh and for anyone that’s interested in checking out these new transfers but doesn’t want to fork out the cash for the boxsets. I just discovered last night that NETFLIX has updated their version of the show with the new High Definition transfers.

Not in all scenes. Some scenes are actually cropped and resized, and it’s they’re clearly recognizable.

Pardon me if I will sound too harsh, but right now I’m seriously pissed about those CBS bastards, but why the f*** does everybody seem to hate Wesley Crusher? He was my favourite TNG character when I was younger but I really have a problem finding any positive comments about him online. The same with Enterprise - for me it was the best Trek show since TNG, especially the first 3 seasons before it got crappy for the last season, but it looks like everybody (at least from the USA) hates the first 3 seasons and likes the fourth one.

The sky is not supposed to be blue, but “greyish”

Color correction discussions are often quite entertaining.

HEY MAN I’M LOOKING OUT MY WINDOW AT THE SKY RIGHT NOW AND THAT SHIT IS BLUE

OK, the sky on Tatooine is not supposed to be blue. The ILM guys specifically talked about it in one of the many 1997 featurettes, and if I remember correctly it’s also mentioned on the Episode 1 DVD bonus features.
