Tips on improving Star Trek (PAL) DVDs (deinterlace, framerate conversion, upscaling etc.)
Time

Hello Avisynth experts.
As probably many of you know, 2016 is the 50th anniversary of Star Trek. I have decided to watch the COMPLETE Star Trek “anthology” in chronological order.

The good thing : Enterprise, TOS, TNG and all 12 movies are available in wonderful 1080p 24fps.
The bad thing : TAS, DS9 and VOY are available only on DVDs (just like the Director cuts of some of the movies).

I was thinking what can I do with the DVDs to simply said make them look better, in other words so that I don’t experience a big shock when I switch from a 1080p TNG episode to a 576i DS9 episode.

For those of you who don’t know how the Star Trek shows were shot - the live action scenes were shot on 35mm film at 24fps, some model work was shot on film at 24fps, other model work was done at 30fps video, the CGI effects were shot also on 30fps and each episode was “finalized” on NTSC video tape (30fps). Then these tapes were converted to 25fps interlaced PAL video, which was released on DVD.

Things I was thinking about were deinterlacing, maybe restoring the original framerate and maybe even upscaling it to at least 720p, if it will be worth it. Plus they’re encoded as relatively low bitrate mpg2, so maybe it will necessary to somehow minimize some compression artifacts.

What would you recommend? What’s the best deinterlacer? People seem to like QTGMC but that produces a 50fps file, I’d prefer a 24fps file 😃 Do you think it’s worth to upscale it? If so, which upscaling method would you recommend?

Thanks for any tips

Quick question about 1982/4 and 1995 "faces" editions on VHS
Time

All releases before 1985 have the theatrical stereo mix (or its mono version, NOT the different mono mix). All releases between 1985-1993 have the Ben Burrt 1985 mix, which has the tractor beam line. All releases after 1993 (all 2) and the GOUT DVD have the 1993 mix (the last created before the SE, again no tractor beam line).

Info Wanted: Unaltered Star Trek TOS in HD? does an HD version of the unaltered original Star Trek series even officially exist?

I always thought both hi-def versions were always identical. (I guess that was only with simultaneous releases early on, before HD-DVD’s shaky market position?) So now, what? We must buy old laserdiscs AND old HD-DVDs (not to mention the players … doh!) to get less remaster-tampering than in contemporary releases?

I apologize for this disgusting piece of self-promotion but I did comparing videos for all TOS episodes …

You did those?!? That is so AWESOME!!

You are my NEW, PERSONAL HERO!!
I love you – now I must save all those videos!! I hate you – now I must save all those videos!!

.

BTW, interesting about the wrong CU of Spock on the DVD in episode “By Any Other Name”. Different from the videotapes (all releases) and the earlier TV broadcasts? Laserdisc, too?

I also noticed the odd movement in the frame-stepping and higher voice pitch, both on the Blu-ray in episode “Arena”. Could those problems be from incorrect capture of a Region B Blu-ray against a Region 1 DVD?

Not sure how the older versions look like. I have TOS only on DVD (the 2003 edition) and BluRay. My VHS tapes went to the trash bin when I bought the DVDs and I live in a country where 99% of people have no idea what a laserdisc is. And I don’t really remember when was the last time I’ve seen the “non-remastered” version on TV.

Also I actually used a Region free Blu-ray and a Region 2 DVD 😃

Despecialized Editions by Harmy : Index of 'How-To's & Help' Threads | Index of 'General Despecialized Threads' | ‘Where are they? And how do I get them?’ mega-merge thread...

 1. Be sure to use jDownloader2 and keep it updated
 2. I think all releases have only the movie and no special features. NTSC DVD would be 480p (or 480i), mkv is 720p, so there’s a pretty big difference in resolution. And also the mpeg2 codec used for DVD is far inferior to x264

I apologize for this disgusting piece of self-promotion but I did comparing videos for all TOS episodes, where I compared all changes between the original and CGI effects, if you want they’re here
Season 1 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8YCSbxI7zs&list=PL0C8YMQolMwj1kAggu2cNCVOgSBmNU4xj
Season 2 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfSVJSMPkkE&list=PL0C8YMQolMwgqZnUFYuhz6eIzJKXIoRGA
Season 3 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Qzzkw-FSwc&list=PL0C8YMQolMwgCwkLX9G_2WktXyfaA_YEh

And a small note - the “original” versions on the BluRay set are actually NOT original versions (at least in some cases), and few episodes are different from their DVD versions, but I have no clue which one is the “original”, e.g. Arena https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJ26yeTNvvM or By Any Other Name : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unxotSzrv3w

Despecialized vs my memory
Time

As I wrote many times before, I always remembered the Biggs hangar scene being a part of the movie, I even remember how surprised I was when I actually read online in the late 90’s that it was added to the 97SE, I didn’t understand what was the website author writing about and I thought they extended it or something like that. That’s one of the reasons why I started to read ot.com and after I downloaded my first OOT preservation set (EditDroid) I was shocked the scene is not there. And no, I haven’t seen the documentary footage until I found it many years after on tbone’s website, nor have I heard the radio play / read the comic book and I read the novel AFTER 1997.

There was another scene which I remember seeing every time I watched my bootleg SW VHS - in the briefing room scene right after Luke says it’s NOT impossible because he used to shoot rats shorter than 2m, the scene (in my memory) continued with Luke shaking hands with the guy next to him and they introduced themselves to each other. I remember it because the guy introduced himself as Wedge, and I was confused why there are 2 pilots named Wedge. Much later (not sure where) I read that actually that guy was the original Wedge before he was replaced with McGregor’s uncle.
