Optical compositing
Time

Can anybody explain me what is the exact process of optical compositing or at least tell me if I understand it correctly?

Let’s say it’s the pre-digital age and we want to shoot a shot of a model in space.

I get we have to film the “background plate” - the space, and we shoot the model in front of a blue screen. So what next? How exactly would we proceed?

I imagine it went something like this :

  1. We film the background
  2. We film the model in front of a blue (later green) screen
  3. We filter out the blue screen so that it becomes black - how?
  4. We now have a starship with incorrect colors on black background. We make a black and white copy of it (from positive to positive? P -> N -> P ?)
  5. We have a shot where the ship is white and the background is black. Correct? Now we do a negative copy of it.
  6. Now we have a new shot where the foreground is black and the background is white. What now?

After point 6 we should have
a) background shot
b) bluescreen foreground shot
c) black and white shot with white foreground and black background
d) black and white film with black foreground and white background

What are a and b? I guess you don’t want to touch the original negatives, so are we working with interpositives made from the original negatives?

Now how do we combine it? If I understand it correctly, the black is the matte and it basically means that the black parts of the film will not be exposed. Correct? So what’s the white part for? I know that we need to put the 4 film strips into an optical printer and “somehow” it will produce the correctly combined shot.

So the next logical question is in which order should the film strips be “layered” in the printer? That’s the part I don’t quite get - so are the white parts of c) and d) basically transparent and the black parts opaque?

And the final question - how many generations from the original negatives would the final composite shot be?

Thanks!

God, I love this project so much. Just watched SW 2.7, ESB 2.0, ROTJ 2.5 all last night. I love you guys. Please don’t mind if I just chime in from time to time to say that😉

I still don’t understand where to download it.

Reading the first post is usually a good way how to start. There is a direct link to a tutorial

Also, as I understand it, as long as it is a restoration it is also slightly more distanced from just a copy. As long as no money ever changes hands and people on the original sources I can see no action being taken.

If they wanted to sue Harmy, they could do it. But as he does not make any money from his releases and requests users to buy the official releases, they can’t claim he’s stealing their money. So if they decided to sue him, they would just make the fans angry, which is a horrible business decision, and as we see Lucasfilm under Disney’s ownership tries to please the fans of the original trilogy as much as possible.

TL:DR - these releases are definitely copyright infringement (at least according to US laws), but they have no reason to interfere. Don’t give them the reason please 😃

I haven’t watched Enterprise, so I don’t know what that show’s MU episodes are like, but I have seen most of DS9’s and I disliked almost all of them. The first one was alright, but I quickly grew bored with them; neither the DS9-era Mirror Universe nor its inhabitants were all that interesting.

I feel this is the only worthy sequel to Mirror, Mirror. Pity no one thought to adapt it to the screen.

Well the Enterprise mirror universe 2 parter takes place completely in the mirror universe, which means nothing from the stuff that happens during the 90 minutes affects the main plot or our characters. In other words, it’s pointless.

I’m sorry, I just don’t find watching people who I know nothing about screaming, fighting and killing each other entertaining. Especially if it does not affect the main series in anyway.

But many people seem to think it’s one of the best Enterprise stories 😃

FanFiltration just posted a link to this in the Off topic Trek thread. It’s a weird hodgepodge of sources. Some cropped, some that looks like it was shot off a screen without a tripod.

This is a great collection of material, despite the varying quality. It’s interesting to read the description here, which claims that one of Gene Roddenberry’s own original blooper reels was stolen during a convention, and that was the source of the endless bootlegs…followed by a TNG blooper reel being stolen from another convention years later. If this is true, it’s an interesting perspective on how the blooper reels made the rounds.

One bit I’ve wondered about for years, what episode is the set seen at 11:42 from? I’ve never been able to identify it. Is it even from Trek at all?

If I remember correctly, I believe that was a behind-the-scenes shot, with the girls who were in some of the scenes being shot doing their morning stretches before shooting. The guy who walks in to inspect the set (I forget who it is) then turns around and stumbles right into one of the ladies bending over right in front of him. The look on his face is priceless! As to what episode they were shooting at the time…no idea. But I’m sure someone knows.

That “guy” is Joe Pevney 😃 A director of MANY TOS episodes

The TNG bloopers have appeared on the DVD and Blu Rays though? Had a really bad copy of that back in the day, but damned if I can recall where I got it from.

The first season TNG blooper was released on the Blu-ray, but censored. There are various versions of this blooper available on “non-official” sources, one of them is a merge of TOS and TNG bloopers, and one is an uncensored version of the official release, but in slightly worse quality. All other blooper reels for seasons 2 - 7 were created specially for the Blu-ray sets from the new 35mm scans

I’ve seen just a couple of random bits, but it looks like it’s a merge of the 3 circulating blooper reels, the Billy Blackburn 8mm footage (from the official Blu-rays) and the silent trims, which were previously shared on youtube. So nothing new, but it’s great to see it all together in one video.

I do have different versions in different quality. Wouldn’t it help if everybody would put some screenshots from his/her version so that we know which one is the best, or something similar? BTW do you know that there are people who have the bloopers on FILM? Last year I was contacted by a man who claimed that his friend has the bloopers on 35mm film, given to him by Roddenberry himself. There was a video of him projecting the reels on youtube but I can’t find it anymore, probably taken down by CBS.
