Dealing with People Selling Fan Projects
Time

Harmy’s work is basically a re-mix, re-mixes are considered fair use. https://boingboing.net/2013/04/26/fair-use-decision-remixing-is.html
He didn’t just re-distribute existing copyrighted things, he took different bits of different copyrighted materials and created his own fan edit, which is very similar (but not identical) to the theatrical cuts, which can’t be right now obtained legally. He has no personal profit out of his work, and his works are used for educational purposes - they are often used to demonstrate differences done to the movies during the years, and providing commentary on them.

So yes, Harmy’s despecialized editions, just like any other fan edits COULD be considered fair use and therefore fully legal. COULD is the most important word. But why are we having such a discussion? Isn’t it safer to behave in a way in which Lucasfilm / Disney has NO reason to take any legal actions?

Info & Advice Wanted: Someone Re-uploading my Videos to youtube
Time

OK so what are your possibilities.

YOU are the legal owner of YOUR videos. YOU own the copyright to them. HOWEVER … YOUR videos contain footage which is copyrighted by LFL/Disney (or Fox). Do you have your videos monetized? You might be protected under fair use.

I would personally try to reach the guy personally and request that he takes down his videos (especially if he monetizes them), if he ignores your request I would send an official DMCA takedown request. However this might be tricky, he can send a counter request, which means you would be required to sue him in the end. And if this would get to court you might get into problems too.

Regarding comparison videos - I have a youtube channel with Star Trek comparison videos, all of them were claimed by CBS. I have actually contacted two real copyright attorneys, one of them claimed that my videos are 100% fair use, the other one claimed that my comparison videos MIGHT be considered fair use, but a judge would have to decide it in court, because I just like you didn’t provide any criticism, commentary, or parody.

How to use video from one .mkv with audio from another .mkv? Also subtitles from another .mkv.
Time

Well if your sources were correctly synchronized, your work would be extremely easy.

Get mkvtoolnix if you’re on Linux or Windows. It has different tools which allow you to work with mkv files, that includes different operations like muxing, demuxing and simple editing, and of course changing different things like attachments, chapters, tags etc.

However if you are sure the sources are not properly synchronized, your work will be much more complicated. It can be a framerate difference (e.g. your DVD is PAL, therefore 25fps and the Blu-ray is 23.976fps), in that case it would be pretty simple (just demux the audio stream from the DVD, convert the speed using any good audio editor (or besweet), and mux the corrected audio to the Blu-ray video.
If there is just a constant delay, you can do it directly in mkvtoolnix.
If the movies are a different cut (e.g. one of them is a director’s cut), you will need some video editor (and maybe before that use some software for converting the video to a format which you editor supports) but that shouldn’t be a problem, I think all 3 main systems have very simple and free video editors which will be capable of doing this.

Subtitles - it really depends on format of your subtitles inside of your mkv file. If it was created using some ripping software it will be as the graphic sup format. You can do some pretty basic operations on that directly inside mkvtoolnix, but for something complex you will need to first use an OCR to convert the graphical format to a text format (srt), and then edit the srt file to your needs - SubtitleEdit is a great free tool which does both.

If you want to go really fancy and want your mkv file to have things like cover art, named chapters, information about things like plot, actors etc. it can be done in mkvtoolnix using a couple of xml files

RELEASED: "Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Special Longer Version)"

Oh I definitely plan to do it, as I said I have already cleaned up and upscaled the deleted scenes from the Blu-ray, and have the HDTV broadcast (Thanks Electric), but I didn’t have the chance yet to check if the deleted scenes match with the HDTV or if the cutting between the sources would be too distracting.

But if you can do it faster (I first have to clean up disc space), I will surely have no objections 😃

I’m currently working on an HD cut of the Director’s cut with the HDTV as a base (although while I include the new SFX shots, I mostly don’t include the altered shots to keep them in HD). The HDTV does have noticeable compression and it’s not very high detail, but it does have more grain and a much better contrast than the BD. One thing that’s interesting is that in the director’s cut they removed a lot of frames that had splice lines, but not consistently, so it’s a pain match that in the edit.

Have you ever listened to the audio commentary? Not sure if it was on the DVD commentary or on the startrek.com commentary, but it was fascinating to listen to it. They have explained that they have cut almost all scene, the guy even said that in some scene they cut like 1 or 2 frames.

Kennedy worse than Lucas.

What good has Kathleen Kennedy done for this franchise?

Nothing. YET. But you don’t know how much “creative freedom” does she have. Don’t forget she’s working for the Mouse.

All she did was exploit fans’ nostalgia for the OT,

Just like the prequel trilogy, which was 100% George’s work.

while at the same time doubling down on not releasing them.

Does SHE have the right to release them? What if she wants to release them but the problem is either on Fox’s or Disney’s side?

Common sense should have left SW alone.

Not really. Star Wars is unfortunately (?) extremely marketable, and let’s face it, Star Wars is the reason why Disney bought Lucasfilm. They will release Star Wars stuff until they start to lose money.

Bit where are we now?

I don’t know about you, but I’m lying on my couch.

Kennedy has given us a loose remake and a fanservice-heavy spinoff.

I agree with that. While I kind of liked TFA, the only parts I liked were ripped off, I mean inspired by the original movie(s). And Rogue One was just a boring fan film with no interesting or memorable characters and one cool scene (Darth Vader).

It’s apparent she’s stifling any creativity by firing directors and keeping on hacks only because they make money.

Well she’s a producer. That’s what Hollywood producers do. They don’t usually care about artistic value, they usually do their decisions based on the highest profits.

Of the next four films coming up, only TLJ would come close to not being some reference-heavy glorified fan film (I’m not buying into the hype).

Well, TLJ is the first Star Wars movie I don’t care about, like at all. I’ve seen the first trailer and my reaction was similar to my reaction of most of current trailers, a giant “meh”, I don’t even know if some other trailers were released or what the other four movies you mentioned will be.

At least with Lucas you got fascinating failures instead of marvel-lite like today’s Star Wars movies.

Actually this is pretty interesting. I have seen TFA twice, once on the big screen and once on the BD, and I don’t plan to watch it any time soon. I’ve seen Rogue One once, I have it on BD but I never even opened it and I don’t feel the need to wtch it. However the prequels - I don’t like them but I’ve seen them many times, I watch the first 6 movies at least once a year since they started to come out on DVD in 2001(?). I didn’t realize that until now, thanks for the term “fascinating failures”, it makes sense.

By the time the Obi-wan movie comes out this franchise will have TEN mediocre installments in it!

What? There’s an Obi-wan movie planned? Why?
