Are there any new Star Wars Books coming out soon? a general book discussion thread
Time

On the back of Hayne’s ‘Star Wars Tie Fighter Owners Workshop Manual’ released earlier this year…

^ obligatory amazon link for info only - https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Tie-Fighter-Manual/dp/1785212230 (please support your local bookstore - or a company that pays it’s fair share of taxes and treats their employees decently)

This beauty will be available on 12th November…

The blurb:-

'After the Clone Wars, the Galactic Empire spared no expense to build a massive fleet of warships to enforce Imperial rule, intimidate defenseless worlds, and destroy all opposition. However, the Imperial Navy underestimated Rebel Alliance fighter pilots, who flew X-wing, Y-wing, A-wing, U-wing and B-wing starfighters, and whatever else they could obtain to fight their Imperial enemies. Decades later, Resistance pilots would fly next-generation versions of Rebel starfighters against the First Order.

The Rebel Starfighters Owners’ Workshop Manual presents a thorough history of the starfighters that served the Rebel Alliance and the Resistance. The history includes design origins, production, and modifications for each Rebel starfighter, and is fully illustrated with numerous photographs, schematics, exploded diagrams, and computer-generated artwork by Star Wars vehicle experts Chris Reiff and Chris Trevas. Text is by Ryder Windham, author and co-author of more than 70 Star Wars books. This Haynes Manual is the most thorough technical guide to Rebel starfighters available, and is fully authorized and approved by Lucasfilm.’

Trailer searches? I wasn’t aware the trailer for TROS was even out yet.

(Likely soon though - along with the PR machine kicking in with adverts, promos, tie-ins and merchandising etc…)

The article on google search, and trailers is about movies in general, not Star Wars specifically. However, the teaser for TROS on the official channel currently stands at 33 mio views compared to 44 mio for TLJ, if that is any indication. The total views for TROS seem to have been higher compared to TFA and TLJ:

https://wegotthiscovered.com/movies/star-wars-the-rise-of-skywalker-trailer-views-trending-higher-than-the-last-jedi/

The PR machine for all Disney films has followed a pretty similar trajectory, so while it’s early days, the difference in interest (as measured by google trends) thusfar is quite significant, but I will keep following its progress over the next few months.

Remember to factor in (or note) other social media too mate; and not just facebook, twitter and instagram etc - but also news-streams, and the rising popularity/use of reddit subs and also fan-made/fan-run You Tube channels as growing mediums for this (over the past couple of years especially), for people online to find / retrieve trailers and other assorted film promos & info.

Though I imagine for many people they’re more interested in the content and quality of TROS itself - along with it’s place in the Sequel Trilogy and also the Main Saga. And are not too concerned with comparisons of other brands and franchises etc or google search data - though if you wish delve deeper into this then I suggest a more relevant (or new) thread.

(one which may likely find a wider audience and have more input into the discussion too - whether for TROS itself, the wider Sequel Trilogy, or the Disney era films so far - R1 & Solo included? etc)

How to burn Hal9000 edits to Blu-ray?
Time

I’m probably wrong or my knowledge is out of date - but I don’t think a PS4 can play iso files.

Also, if Sony blu ray players are anything like Sony tvs when it comes to file support… there is a decent chance they may not play iso files too - though best check with the compatible formats your specific Sony blu ray player can handle.

I take it the disc plays on the pc just fine?

Yeah - there’s been some chat about in this thread:-

Personally, I’m not a fan of them - there are better covers by fans on here… than those supposedly official covers (and without the errors too 😉 )

What do you think of them, mate?

How do I convert from mkv to mp4 without losing quality???
Time

Is using a USB flash drive or an external hard drive an option to play the Despecialized Editions?

It may save you the hassle of resizing files to find an acceptable image quality for you - and also burning discs etc?

If not, and you want to go the disc route, then these may be of some help:-

doubleKO has that image - with a little less cropping to the right of R2 - in his ‘collection download’ (1.48gb), here - https://originaltrilogy.com/post/id/993765

There’s a fair chance that SkyderHouseMafia also has a version - in his ‘Complete Star Wars Poster Collection’ too (6gb+), here - https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Complete-Star-Wars-Poster-Collection/id/60955

Looking for criterion style or concept art inside covers for 1-6. Leave suggestions down below

Hi & welcome Tzaddie,

You could, of course have a search for them yourself… there are a few featured ‘inside cover’ type threads (and posts / projects) - on here, and feature various artwork for what you are seeking.

Or perhaps find and select criterion style or concept art images (there are many to choose from) - and then resize them accordingly - depending upon whether you are looking for blu ray or dvd sized covers, for example?

Good luck with it 😃

PS - a ‘please’ and / or a ‘thank you’ can often go far when asking people for assistance.

Sorry I didn’t mean to sound rude! I’ve searched for hours on the thread and I’ve seen some amazing covers for OT I just can’t find a complete matching set. Thanks for the help!

If you’ve searched for hours going through the threads on here then it’s probably worth taking the time to state that in your opening post - rather than ask others to just ‘leave suggestions for you below’ for you without an introduction, please, or thanks etc.

Please, take the time to look around to see how this place functions 😃

And good luck with the search - the An Index Thread (and more) for Case Covers, Disc Labels, and Fan Art… may be of some assistance - as may the Inside Covers & Inserts thread, and the various poster / art collection threads - and other DVD/blu ray cover sites linked too.

‘Google image’ searches are usually quite helpful too - ‘prequel trilogy concept cover art’ comes up with quality McQuarrie-style art that are likely a match for some of his more well known Original Trilogy art.

If and when you do find some you like - please be sure sure to post them up here - thanks.

Some quality & insightful info on building the Droids for the Original Trilogy…

An old friend sent me this very cool, insightful and informative link for background information on how some of the astro-droids were made for Star Wars (1977)

I thought it may also be of some interest on here?

The 3Dsf•info Astro-droid Pages - https://sites.google.com/site/3dsfinfo/astromech-pages

I: Designing R2-D2 - https://sites.google.com/site/3dsfinfo/astromech-pages/designing-r2

Also of note, and very much worth a mention in here…

In the ‘The robotic R2’ section - https://sites.google.com/site/3dsfinfo/astromech-pages/designing-r2#TOC-The-robotic-R2

'In the end, fully robotic R2s were not possible, both in terms of budget and available time. Stears had to be satisfied with all-metal robots largely worn as costumes or occasionally puppeted externally. Only one robot was built with mechanization, and that radio-controlled R2 simply had driving motors in its outer feet, a steering mechanism in its middle foot, and a spring-loaded middle leg mechanism. It couldn’t turn its head or operate its arms.

It was Stears and his effects team who worked on the mechanisms of the RC R2, and the lights built into most of the droids. According to Stears in a 1978 Cinefantastique interview, his crew included “Dick Hewitt, electronics expert; Brian Warner, Bert Hamilton-Smith, Bob Nugent, all engineers; (and) Bennie Smith, electrician.”

Stears was quite upset that none of the people who worked on his end of the show were listed in the film’s credits, grumpily remarking that “the American crew credits included everybody including the teaboy, but my effects crew never got a mention.” Accordingly he placed a full-page ad in Screen International, a British industry magazine, thanking the people and companies who worked on the project. Note that this ad doesn’t just focus on the people who made R2-D2, but also people who worked on the landspeeder, the dewback mannequin, the light sabres, the non-R2 droids, and so on.’

^ The full page advert in the ‘Screen International’ trade paper that special effects director John Stears took out to thank and congratulate all the British-based effects people who went uncredited in the original Star Wars film (1977).

Another example of all those years that poor old George was forced to compromise his vision(s) by allowing award winning artists and technicians to collaborate on the original Star Wars Trilogy - including the two films he did not make / direct… 😉

The Lost Art of Star Wars’ article by doubleofive, on the Star Wars Visual Comparisons website, is also well worth a good read.

If any one else knows of any quality websites on the droids, their design, the making of, issues on-set etc, please post them up. 👍

The somewhat outdated The changes made to the Original Trilogy films down the years… OT•com thread has had the links to certain Star Wars websites in it updated - so that they are all now functional once more… via the Internet Archive’s Tardis ‘WayBack Machine’ 😃

Some of the longer-serving members on here may recall a few of the sites linked in it - ranging from the mid 1990’s to early/mid 2000’s. So definitely some retro rabbit-holes going on there.

And for the younger members here - that is indeed what the internet looked like back then…

The Big List of Changes to the Star Wars films

Many of the websites that Gregatron linked to in his insightful and informative post unfortunately are no longer around.

In an attempt to not lose that information - and also the sterling efforts of Gregatron - the links in his OP have been updated to include working links from the Internet Archive’s WayBack machine.

^ There may be some familiar old sites linked to… 😉

Well in Gregatron 👍

Links have also been fixed/updated and added & compiled in the similarly older thread of:-

‘The changes made to the Original Trilogy films down the years…’

^ with various sources of information available during that time.

Along with several (15-20) similar older and somewhat outdated OT•com ‘comparison & info’ type threads - though still worthy of archiving; with some gentle yet thorough reminiscing - added to the:-

An Index Thread for Theatrical Cuts vs. Subsequent Releases

The current and up-to-date info & discussion thread for changes made to the Original Trilogy films…

Complete Comparison of Special Edition Visual Changes - by doubleofive

…features an array of links to various sources covering the many changes made to the Original Trilogy films (in the opening post of the thread) - as well his own superb comprehensive projects on the changes made to the three classic films. It also serves as the main discussion thread on these many changes…
